You need to read Faylen's beginning clothing recolouring tutorials over in Body Shop skinning. They will teach you the techniques and concepts of recolouring items in Body Shop, so you'll understand what's going on when you get those grey marks (I'm guessing you're trying to shorten a dress by changing the alpha - if it's not an alpha-editable dress like Marvine or PAF's custom alpha skirts, that won't work and you'll just see grey/skin tone where you're trying to cut).
If you want to create new meshes, well, first you need to go read Faylen's tutorials in BS Skinning to learn how to make good recolours... don't just do her tutorials, but do them, and work on a bunch of recolours of your own, and read the other info in the Skinning FAQ and the other tutorials there to not only know how to recolour, but how to recolour -well- and gain experience in it. Then, when you're fully comfortable recolouring and can do it in your sleep, come back here and read the tutorials to learn how to make meshes.

Well, um, if you're editing the alpha and seeing grey and getting confused about it, then you're not too experienced in recolouring, and need to practice s'more. Meshing is MANY orders of magnitude harder than recolouring, and being an experienced recolourer is a prerequisite before you begin meshing.
Being able to find the meshing tutorials without being led by the hand to them is also a meshing prerequisite. :giggler:

Um... look.... If you're using MS Paint, you clearly haven't read anything in the Skinning FAQ or the tutorials over in Body Shop Skinning like I'm trying to tell you to do. You cannot use MS Paint to recolour. It can only do the most basic of things and is -not- a good program for creating textures, period.
And by the sound of it, what you are trying to do will NOT work. You cannot simply cut off the bottom of a long skirt and expect it to look shorter - you are limited by the shape of the mesh and you cannot change that by recolouring it (except in cases of alpha skirts like I mentioned previously). You would have to use a mesh that is shorter and actually has the shape you want, not a long skirt. You're getting grey (which in Body Shop is the mannequin's skin showing) because you're trying to edit the alpha to make it shorter - which will not work.
You need to actually go over and read Faylen's clothing recolouring tutorials and the Skinning FAQ and do the tutorials as written. The Skinning FAQ will tell you what other programs besides Photoshop you can use, and the tutorials will tell you what you need to do. Please go and do her tutorials as written.
Seeing as you are definitely not ready to mesh, and this area is for meshing questions... thread locked.
