Alright, so I'm pretty new to this whole modding scene, but I learn very fast, so the technical end of this wont be too much for me. Anyway...

My ultimate goal is to make a card table, like fo CCGs and whatnot. Basically, I want to reskin the chessboard and, instead of having sims play chess on it, they use the card animations from the poker table. Of course, I'd much rather have custom animations, but you get the idea. So, having never made an object/animation/mod before, what do I need to do to see my card shop become a reality? Thanks!

Well the first thing is that you'll need to clone the chessboard to recolour it, because a standard recolour won't allow you to change behaviours at all. Once you've done that, you'll need to do a bit of editing in the BHAVs, because the animations in the chessboard are slightly more complicated than in most objects (they actually move pieces around on the board). There are some general tutorials on BHAV editing at the bottom of this article: http://sims2wiki.info/SimAntics :)
