View Full Version : [Mac user] Random Text while downloading?

I read the FAQ about download managers, but it didn't seem to solve my problem.

When I'm on ModtheSims2, and I click on the file I want to download a whole bunch of random text comes up in a white window and it desn't download!

I'm using Safari because it's easy, and I don't really want to install firefox because that's just adding more programs.

CintaBear32, are you talking about downloading RAR files?

(Gees I wish people would simply POST the answer, not send you to pages of self help!)

This is so easy. Hold control as you click to download. Select download linked file.
What you got, is a file that looks something like this...
blahblah.rar.txt Now go rename that file and remove the .txt part.
Say ok to the idiot box that asks if you REALLY want to do that.

now you'll have a little brown icon which you can open just like any zip file.
No problem and NO special software needed.

For a simpler solution try this one.

1. Go to Pure Mac (www.pure-mac.com) and download UnrarX (Stuffit's hopeless at decompressing rar files. I was directed towards UnrarX, and it hasn't failed me yet, and I'm always downloading stuff). While you are at Pure Mac, grab a few extra browsers (Safari's great, but it has its weaknesses), I got Shiira and Opera (Shiira's great because all your downloads appear in a dated download folder on the desktop, and Opera will get the files that the others won't).

2. Having downloaded and installed the programs, you are now ready to rock. Open a browser, any browser will do, and go to the place where your downloads are. Now, control click on the download link for the file you want, and choose download linked file. If nothing shows up, grumble, snarl, then open Opera. Go to the same site, do the same thing. Things should work.

If you have UnrarX, the rest should be a piece of cake. (I found the txt technique doesn't always work

siminsanity, the reason why we post links to the help faqs is 1) we'd have to type the same info over and over again and 2) we wrote them so that people would take the time to read and follow them ;)

julianarosalia Yea well... I got sent to that same long winded page and wasted a ton of time to find such a simple answer. It takes very little time to just type....
hold down control as you download, click download linked file,
then remove the .txt from that file.

Safari works fine by the way, though sometimes I do have to download a few times before I get a real file. And safari can also be set to send downloads to any folder you designate. Look in preferances. You'll see it easy enough.

Does this really take too long? As opposed to sending people to LONG winded self help pages? Sorry but I find that rude.
Like here, go figure it out yourself dumb A**
I won't do that to anyone!

I can see if it's a long explaination though. But this really is not.

Siminsanity, please don't argue about how the staff does their jobs or call the staff members rude for posting links to faqs.

All those faqs are geared towards windows, would it be possible to have one written just for macs? Can you have a more "filled" out mac help section? Would it be possible to convert some of the windows tutes to mac? So that a mac user could actually follow it and not read between the lines so to speak.

Dream on. But at least we mac people can read!
Here, I get more help from THIS board.
http://thesims.ea.com/us/index.html?menu=community&content=/us/chat/
Click the BBB enter here link.
You'll find a WHOLE section just for mac users. And some very friendly people there.

And julianarosalia, It wasn't me who gave this whole thread a thumbs down.
Wonder why?
I tried to help. It seems the first poster just left after your helpful reply.
By the way, the thing to do after I POST the entire explaination is say THANK YOU!
Not get mad because you don't like being told YOUR rude! I get mad when ever someone sends me to ENDLESSLY LONG self help pages when I post a question.
I bet that's why the thumbs down icon! And why the first poster never came back.
