Sounds like you're trying to open files incorrectly. Please see the FAQ above for full instructions on downloading and installing all sorts of custom content, including sims. If you get a message saying you need an expansion pack for a sim, use Clean Installer to install the sim instead.

I notice from the info you've provided, that you have no expansion or stuff packs. Just the original game?

If you only have the original game, then you have to check to see if the particular Sim you are trying to install, contains any custom content that requires certain expansion or stuff packs. Look up the Sim on MTS2 and check again to be sure.

This goes for any custom content you download. Always check the EP and stuff pack requirements for any content to work in your game before you download it. You can also filter out any content that requires expansion and stuff packs that you don't have.

You should still read the Fracking Idiots thread though. It is very helpful. But this was just my quick answer in case your problem is really that obvious.

traciputnam - Sims do not require expansions. Their hair/accessories/clothing might, but the sim itself (and most of the content like skin, makeup, etc.) does not. We ask uploaders to flag sims as requiring no EP unless the content for them is essential for their look and requires an EP. The EA installer complains, saying you need EPs, but it's lying - you can use Clean Installer to install any sim. You might just need to change their hair or clothes.

HystericalParoxysm, thank you for the correction. And you're right. The Clean Installer actually SHOWS you what files are part of the Sim you are installing before you install it. I just thought that if you didn't uncheck any files that required EPs or stuff packs, it would cause an error. I didn't think of that. Sorry.
