Mod The Sims - Got pets? me too! so what do you think about it..

hi all,

i got pets yesterday, and i am really glad i got it already. it is a great game.

All the pets look really great, and are sooooo cute :D I also love the new build option. they included the diagonal roof ( which however doesnt really connect well with the original ones) you now also have the option to make a room with diagonal walls, and a room with 8 walls ( sorta round i guess ) just like you had the options to create a straight room before, instead of a single wall. its really cool. The space theme included looks cool as well, and so are the other products.

Things i dont really like is the fact that the dog/cat houses are so big. In the sims 1 a dog house was one tile, now it is 4. it looks a bit to big, but then again, you need to be able to put 2 dogs in to make puppies lol.

I also found a bug ( i think :P ) if you build on a residential lot, and choose collections, there is one with all the pets stuff. A white counter can be clicked for information but cannot be placed. It does however work on a community lot.

The game in general adds a lot of fun, the create a pet thing is really easy and so much fun to mess around with :D the interactions are great, and i really think that allthough some dogs ( and cats as well ) are a bit odd, like a chihuaha (sp?) being as big as a french bulldog, its okay, because they are all too cute to notice anything wrong.

Well thats my first impression of the game, what do you think about it. I was overexited, and for a good reason, its alot of fun.

Sims 2 Seasons will ship next spring and will include all the content that they decided not to put into pets. Remember, they originally stated that this expansion pack would not just be about pets. Now we know what happened to the non-pet related content.

I'm having lots of fun with my pets at the moment however I'm waiting to see how I'll still feel about it in a month or so from now...when the new EP excitement has diminished. But they're cute, lovable, and there are lots of things I haven't tried yet so I expect to remain interested for a while at least (longer than OFB for sure)

Thanks for your summary, Mp! The doghouse does seem a bit oversized, but what you going to do? I'm sure modders can fiddle around with it in the coming months.

I personally like the big doghouses, they're cuter :). And more detailed. I guess a smaller doghouse would be nice though, just for some variety.

The doghouses are more like dog mansions, lol, but I still like them. I am very happy with the game. My self-sim has a beagle, and since I have no pets in real life, I am living vicariously through her.

ive been waiting months for this game... and now that i got it, im like... ehhh... i think i expected too much out of it.

now that i have it, i remember what a nusience all the pets were in the sims unleashed, although there are so many interactions you can do, its still, pretty much, the same thing... they pee on the floor, bark, chase the mailman, etc...
maybe i dont like it as much b/c i havent really played it much yet. i only played it for about an hour, and i kinda got bored... really fast. :weep: idk... maybe itll get better tomorrow, when i actually sit down and play it for awhile. :hmm:

does anyone else feel this way, or is it just me?

i like it it is better than unleashed and the pets are more casual instead of needing constant attention it really makes teh gaming experiance seem complete the sims origianlly felt like an unfinished game now it feels finished. anything after this point is bonus and they can take as much tie realeasing it as they want

I agree. The only problem i'm having in my family is paying attention to the toddler and infant. The seem to be a little neglected now that there are two dogs in the house.

I love it. My next dog is getting named 'Woofum', so it'll be called by name. I've befriended the leader of the pack (Fred), a white wolf named Baxter, and adopted a grey wolf named Alabama. I stuck my first poor girl with three pets to begin with, so she's really busy. I just really love the pets, pretty much from when the first dog I made barked.

So ... you didn't have any problems with installing the game? I've been lurking around the BBS over on the main site, and a few people say they're having this problem where they get to like 64%-68% ... it hangs, gives them an error message whereby they can either RETRY or CANCEL ... those who cancel find that Pets has installed, but OFB has been UNINSTALLED! This worries me.

I just installed mine and opened up Pleasantview. The first thing I did was look at the new lots (they are marked with a little "pets" icon like the clothes in other packs), then the families in the bin, then I looked at the new neighborhood decoration items. I placed a couple of the new things down. Then while I was reading the tips in the new encyclopedia thing in gameplay options, a UFO came flying down and zoomed around the New Stonehenge decoration! It startled me! I haven't really gotten to the gameplay yet, though. That's where I'm headed to now... to play the "crazy cat lady" lot. (no, that's not what her name really is)

I had the stall at 64%. Right after you switch cds right? Try ejecting the cd then putting it back in. I find hitting 'ok' a little after the noise of the comp reading the cd starts usually works well.

Yeah, no problems at all after that. I think it's more the disc reader's fault then the game, because I had it do something akin to that a LOT when installing the base game, all those pauses to switch cds.

After it was fully installed, it hung, so I restarted my computer. Everything installed fine but I think it uninstalled Glamour because all my stuff is missing. Ah well, that's easy enough to take care of. ;)

At first, I wasn't impressed. But after an hour or so of getting into it, I can't stop playing. I was up way to late with this expansion and I think its fast becoming my favorite. With the others I never actually lost track of time, so this is great for me!

Yea it was after i put in the second CD. I didnt get the message that ofb had been uninstalled though. It took me a good three tries to get the game to install.

Yeah I've had the same impression at first but I think I was just irritated that by the time I got home with it I didn't get much play time with it lol I had to go to bed in order to get up for work today. On my way back from Wal-Mart I got stuck in a small traffic jam. Cars were lined up due to an accident on this rather narrow curvy road.

It was 8:30 pm before I started the installation lol Once I get home and get more into it I'm sure I'll love it.

I received the DVD version (although I didn't actually ordered it :s but hey it works) and the installation went so fast, I couldn't read the book! :p I'm very happy with it, but I only played it once, and not so long.

Yes! I finally got it! i was kinda worried at first because when I went to walmart I didn't see it at first but it turned out walmart forgot to put it out last night. Its awesome, I'm sad there's no corgi but all the other pets are so cute!

Me too! I was really upset about that because they are my favorite breed. But I'm working on making a corgi-esque small dog.

I'm enjoying the game so far but I don't think this one is going to have the staying power usability of NL or even OfB. I can see myself getting bored with it after a month or so, which is okay. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do so I'm still happy.

New toys are always fun to play around with, but this will not be my fav EP. I have a feeling I will get bored with it very soon, unfortunately (and I have had it for about one day so far...) and not many of my existing families will get new, furry family members I'm afraid.

I'm a bit disappointed. I really thought pets and sims would have had more social interactions and I'm already fed up with teaching them all those commands, just like teaching toddlers stuff just that there are more of it which takes much longer (but pets are really like toddlers, IRL too, so I guess that makes sense...)

And I HATE having the sim's wants bars clogged with "Give love to pet" and "Command Pet..." worth 250! There's no bl**dy point to such lame wants but you have to fulfill them to make better wants roll up! :X

I give it 2 out of 5.

ETA: But the space age furniture was great! Loving'em!

My install got hung up around the 64% mark as well. However, when I got OFB, I also happened to get a new laptop. So, I found out that for some reason any Sims 2 game that comes out with more than one CD will hang up at some point. So, I have to copy all the files to my hard drive as recommended on the EA Support site. No problems once I do that.

This time around, I decided to uninstall everything (even all my 50 billion downloads) and start fresh.

So, I got to play last night for 2 hours without cheats (argh!) and now pets. I had Nina and Don adopt a little kitten. SOOO TINY!!! And with equally tiny little meows and yowls. I heart it muchly. He eats a lot!! Anyway, apparently kittens don't play with the scratching post or the cat tower or any of the cat toys. He'll only nap on his bed.

I wish that the Sim could pick up the pet and place them on the cat tree. Or perhaps, like with kids and teens, you can encourage them to be nice or whatever... maybe they could 'encourage' the pet to play with whatever item.

Anyway, I do like some of the new objects too. Like the furniture and the new phone.

I just installed and everything went great, I still have all my other EPs as well. I played for a little while, and I like it alot, I think the dogs are so cute! I just hope the issues with CC will be solved soon and I get all my custom food back :weep:

I got it around noon today, and installed it while I ate lunch. I'm totally in love! (Especially with the controlPets thing. xD) The furniture is kinda lame, and I wish you could pick up full-grown cats and small-sized dogs, but I still love it.

I just bought it today. It's so funny how you can release the womrat or bird from their cage. I went to the petstore and freed all the womrats and i opened the bird cage and it flew right out the front door of the store,i was laughing so hard,lol.

The flashing red walls come from a graphics/video card that doesnt make the grade with the latest expansion packs. I had that problem with ffs. I got a new computer.
I have upgraded computers twice so far, just for this game! haha

I installed from the EA downloader .. and DAMN it's running better than before !

the nly thing funny is than the insim causs weird stuff to happen , like the reproductive adjustor appearing when dogs pee o.O;;

but since the boolprop cheats are ok if you'Re safe with them ,
I use them which works pretty much like the insim..

Great game! I have the dvd version and had not a single problem. The game was installed in around 10 minutes. I've been playing a full sim week now and no signs of a wolf and/or stray-dog/cat (makes me think: I've also never seen a burglar in game :blink: ) anyway, I agree with the lack of toys. (now hoping that simpe update comes fast, so new toys can be made) and another stupid thing is: why aren't dogs playing with (or biting on) the toys of the todlers? :confused: (A real dog always runs of with those toys)

edit: just noticed my pets are sleeping with the eyes open! Is it normal?

I have just had my game too....am currently doing a grand reinstall of the whole lot...hehe.
One thing I did notice...on the flyer in the box. They are doing another Christmas EP called Festive Holiday Stuff (out in November). It looks like the Christmas pack but there are one or two other things that are not in the Christmas Party Pack...how frustrating is this? Why are Maxis going back over EP's...

I got it today, and im completely wrapped with it ... heaps happy. Can barely get me out of the game i though i'd have a quick breath of fresh air before i go back in ... Hehe ... im trying to get my pets to breed right now but it takes a while for them to like eachtother since you cant tell them to interact. Had a question though does anyone know how to put collars on your pets, i bought 1 for my new adopted puppy ... and there was nothing in my inventory when i returned home and i had no interaction with the dog to put it on him?

Click on the mirror and you should get an option to change the pets appearance.

I'm much more into it than I was that first night. Since I didn't get much time to play it. I moved that premade family into a starter house that had the single male and his dog. Then I played around in CAP and made a mini bull terrier in the colors I liked and merged her into the household.

The dogs hit it right off I was really surprised at how quick and she's already had 3 pups :)

I like my bull terrier she's cute. I named her Lilo (hehe I had a Lilo and Stitch DVD right beside me, hence the name Lilo)

I've had to however use the control pets cheat in one house to keep a dog from starving to death. lol I may get the hang of things soon.

I just love it! The new objects,build stuff etc are okay - nothing to write home about - but the pets are awesome! I made some really cute strays and self sims of my cats. The only thing is I don't remember if I checked the sex of my one cat and am not sure what sex it is. I can't seem to figure that out - does anyone know how? It would also be nice if you could make your pets a little fatter - my one cat is REALLY fat! Anyways, it's great and I'm glad I bought it! Like I wouldn't buy an expansion....ha ha! I took today off work and am going to spend the next three days in Sim Heaven!

Select a sim
Goto the panel where you can view every sim they know (I guess it's called the relations panel, but I'm not certain! But you can also view there friends there)! There you can also see your pets and on the image of the face you also get to see the symbol for male or female

I didn't pay any attention to the sex of the dog that was with the premade guy. I just assumed and hoped it was a boy when I made a female dog to merge in the family lol Thank goodness I was right. They've got 3 pups now.

I do love the new furniture they included in this expansion. I played the Kim household (premade family) and noticed a column that had 3 small shelves on it that held decorative flowers you can get in the buy mode catalog. I thought that was the neatest thing.

I almost had a pet starve too. I moved the Kat family in (an occupied lot available with this EP). A woman with 3 cats. One of the kitties wouldn't eat out of the bowl. I had to click on the bowl and have the sim call the kitty to eat. Which was a relief to find they could do that because otherwise, the cat kept eating the flowers, which aren't very filling and she was nearly starving.

I also had the male and female try for a kitten. They get into the little pet house and then suddenly you can't see in to the pet house anymore and then the little house started rocking and rolling and had the woo hoo animations going on with the fireworks, etc. It was pretty cute. I wonder how long before I have another tiny kitty running around.

I'm not a fan of parrots in real life, but I love the Peregrine falcon they included in the game. I'm not sure if it really is a falcon or just a type of parrot but I love it. :)

I'm too lazy to go through all the trouble of building up pet relationships and buying a dog house just to get puppies so I just select a big dog breed and "shrink" it down to a small version. I love my golden retriever puppy! All in all I'm happy with the game. The furniture is great also, they finally included a stylish fireplace!

I really like it but I've noticed that my cc objects, windows etc don't show up. I have no problem with clothes or hair (probably because Pets does not include either). Custom walls/floors show up but no custom windows or doors or stairs. Custom eyes and skins seem okay - I use the default replacement ones. I had recently gotten rid of most downloads so it wasn't so bad.

***I'm an idiot- I went to help and found out I didn't enable cc-duh!! now if i could only get those dumb dogs to eat something besides garbage and flowers!***

yes..I like the introduction of birds too...you could find a way of getting these reskined/coloured to make owls and Fawkes the Pheonix from Harry Potter...although we need a cheat/hack to stop people from opening the cages and letting the birds loose...some ideas there for any good modders, hehe.

After reading for a few days about bugs/glitches etc, I decided that Pets was working OK and I'd go get it. This morning, as I waited while backing up everything, I was reading about sinking pets. I decided I just wouldn't let the little guys pee :) So I moved all DLs out, backed up all files including registry entry.

Install was seamless, great. No previous EPs were uninstalled. Started game, no hacks, no clothing, no hair, no CC at all in. (I was really hoping for a new startup movie...) I placed all Maxis made homes, businesses, and pets into my test hood. Then went and visited each one. Here's what I though:

The Maxis made business lots are sad, as usual? :) The families were better than they have been tho. The houses were so-so with the exception of the Nuclear family house. I found it to be horrifically bad. And the roof on the cat lady's house was awful too. Content ok, nothing to brag about. All in all, I much perfer my CC to anything Maxis made.

The new stairs stink to high heaven. I will never use them. The octagonal room--what is that anyway?? :) Would not drag out to a different size no matter what I did. The diagonal roofs were so bad they made me laugh out loud! :) If I got them to place correctly, a real struggle, they left 'holes' in the roof where they intersect with the other roof section. Really bad bad bad.

However, I watched closely in the cat lady's house to see if the cats sunk when they needed to pee. They did not. Had one dog that I saw pee, no sinking. So is the sinking a bug?

The cats did demolish her chair. I wonder why Maxis made it a complete demolish...why not just make it ratty with springs sticking out, but still useable? I would have loved that. Maybe sit on a spring and leap up in pain, yelling ouch? Woulda been good.

All in all? While the pets themselves are very cute, I'm kinda disappointed in the quality as well as the limited content. I was brow beating myself (after the diagonal roof thing) for falling into the Maxis trap yet again. Next EP I think I'll just pass.

PS: We need Numenor's Tulip Lamp fix again.....

Okay - I had no problems installing and my custom content is showing up okay - except for some content by Frillen (decorative item) no longer works... I only bought the expansion for the building stuff - and am very disappointed with the roof tool. Diagonal roofing does not join seamlessly with normal roofs! It looks ugly - I doubt if I will ever use it. I like the new furniture and the pets are pretty darn adornable!

But my biggest problem: I am playing with my first family since installation. The couple just had a baby. The problem is every time the carpool arrives while dad is holding the baby - he does not put the baby down - he gets in the car with the baby! This is so odd! Has anyone had this same glitch? The mom was alone at home and I commanded her to put baby in crib - but there was no pie menu for the baby! Whats going on???

I just got into Sims last year after borrowing Urbz from my younger sister. I got into it fast and now, I've got Sims 2 , Nightlife, and Pets. Originally, i went to the game stop so i could get university, but they didn't have any in stock, however they did have a shelf of Pets behind the register and i couldn't help myself! I took it home and made my first pet (spice) and was pleased beyond words! I only hope to get the other EP's in the next month or so. I'm also happy to say i installed it with NO problems what so ever! Yay! :D

So far the game is fun. Evento I haven't played it much, because I let my daughter play it more. I did see a cat watching a fly zooming around. There was something else but right now I can't remember.

Also, everyone has been mentioning a DVD version of the game. Everywhere I have gone to seems to not know of it being on DVD. They are tring to tell me it's only the base game. GO figure. I finally got the PC version and hasn't given me any problems.

foolinthemoon, you really aren't missing much from University. I find it a pain to do all the term papers and such and really not get anything worth while out of even going. I uninstalled mine, so my teens didn't have wants to go and now they can spend all their free time playing with their pets !

I think the pets sinking into the floor was from the echo community sleep hack, which is one of the few things I actually left in the game, because my daughter asked me to, and I had a cat sink into the floor, and someone else reported they thought it was this particular hack related.

Since you guys all have it, how does the ep effect you graphics-wise with/out cc in it? I'm stressing a bit, because I have cc I want to keep in the game with pets and when I go on a big lot with lots of objects and sims, the graphics get a bit blurry :|

Mine was preorder too, gave up on having patience, went and bought mine, and am selling my preorder copy to a friend LOL.
Mine loads fine, no blurriness with cc. It WAS faster loading without downloads folder, I will admit, esp. since my downloads folder is 2 gig. If you are having issues it is probably a graphics card/amount of memory issue.

So did you guys remove ALL custom content? Even just the clothes and stuff? Because I only have 3 hacks I used (one where vampires looked normal, the other two I forgot) plus InSim. I don't use custom food or anything, all of my custom content is clothes, furniture, paintings, hair, make-up, etc. I'm going to lose all of it anyway because my desktop crashed *cries* but I guess the question is - when I finally do get it to work (we're gonna try and reinstall Windows to see if it helps) should I bother re-DLing custom content at all?
I just had problem with one hack, one enabling community sleeping. So I would say that just backup your neighbourhood and run game with custom content. I think that you have good chances of it working perfectly.

Or maybe InSim might cause problems, so better remove it..

One thing I noticed and like about Pets is that buying clothes is faster now. Clothes rack loads up clothes selection box almost immediately when it used to take long time.

I kept a few of my hacks (lot full of sims, which seems to give me the side benefit of no limit to pets :) triplets quads hack, a few minor ones like selling novels satisfies earn money want, and a few I cant name off the top of my head) but no real issues seem to be showing up, plus I kept custom content.

To answer melanie's question : The graphics are good, infact I think (if its possible) installing the new games (FFS,GLS & Pets) has made my graphics sharper - or it might just be that it re-adjusts the settings to the highest your computer to handle when you first load it.
If your graphics look blurry if you're using a lot of CC, try to turn down the options you might not need so much - such as shadows, reflections, view neighbours etc.

In response to Breakage:
If you liked the CC, I reccommend re-downloading it. I've had no problems or conflicts at all with using Pets & custom content. I'd be wary of hacks for now, though. Check the sticky in this forum about compatible hacks and temp. remove the ones that are listed incompatible. It should run just fine with custom objects, skins, hairs, eyes etc. though

I agree with you Gloss, my graphics seem sharper also. I always keep mine on the highest setting anyway.

My cc works fine, but I had problems with some mods, the censor & insimenator, and body shop was messed up. The censor caused my sim to go to work at midnight.... he's captain hero. When I took it out he went to work regular time. Insim causes my animals cues to drop out.
I'm thankful that I have not had more problems than that.
