I want to build an Apartment and have it rented out.

Is it possible to build apartment units / complex on one residential lot, so that you can have different people/families live in each unit?

Yes it is possible with the vacation doors (if you have BV) or with the university doors (if you have University). However, you cannot have different families living on one lot. All the people living there would be of one 'familiy' (like when you send a bunch of kids to college together....they are from separate families, but make their own new 'family' when chosen to go to University together). And you have the limitations of number of people living on a lot (unless you have a hack to increase the number) to keep in mind as well... Hope that helps you.

Hi MissTech, So you are saying you can't have the Robinsons and Johnsons on an apartment duplex on one lot? Just one of each family member created in the Sims?

I do apartments and duplexes in my game. I use Monique's rental mod, and have the place owned by someone else. However, as of now, with no working larger families mod for Bon Voyage, the total possible sims living on the lot is 8, regardless of which unit they use. Also, money is put in a communal household pot, unless I want to seperate it out with Monique's banking funtion on her computer, which is more math than I'm willing to do. Also, and this is the least realistic thing, the sims wander into each other's units to eat, sleep, shower, anything really. They treat all units as part of their one home.

SimLogical has a hack/mod, I think, but I'm not sure.

Yes, Simlogical has a global mod and individual doors that allow 4 keys to be handed out. The global mod works with ALL doors. I use it. It also functions ide by side with the EA locking door system so you get all door functions available.

With this mod you can have apartments. The sims try to get into each others place (so do nosey neighbors :)) but they DO learn pretty fast they can't and they have their own places, just like they learn they have their own beds. This learning isn't strictly true, but it is most of the time--so the sim will try now and then to go to others doors. Of course, family size gets restricted to the 4 available keys for each unit--I haven't had overpacked lots with more than the 8 sims for along time so that doesn't bother me. I think the system is perfect for singles and families belong in houses anyway.

The worst part, aside from the lot reported as SOandSO Family is if one of the families has a baby. Baby's are so attractive that the other sims just won't leave them alone--everyone wants to hold the baby. However, I think Inge might have a mod to fix this too, but I'm not sure.

I got the lot family name thing by clever naming: Betty Bob Brownstone Apts, move her in first the lot becomes Brownstone Apts--the others moved in will retain their last names.

Yes it is possible with the university doors (if you have University).

I wouldn't recommend that, really. Yesterday, I moved one of my families into that kind of apartment. Their kid grew up into a teen, and then, about a minute later, she automatically grew up into YA, though she couldn't go to class, couldn't change her mayor through phone or computer (there was no "college" option at all), she couldn't do her assignments, her semester meter always stayed the same, and, when I used InSim to make her finals in two hours, they stayed like that for a day and so on. :einstein If you have inSim, that's not a big problem, but for those who don't use it, it is.

Oh, and you don't get newspapers delivered. :anime:

that shouldnt happen unless you were on a university lot, which can be a real mess to raise families in for all sorts of reasons..
