Most of my born-in-game Sims get first-and-middle two-word "first" names. Of course while the game recognizes this as two words for word-wrapping purposes it has no idea that the second word is supposed to be the *middle* name and uses both words together exclusively. No biggie, but I personaly know very few people who go by their first-and-middle names on a regular basis. ::shrug::

I have two 'main' families. They are the ones that are on their 2nd-3rd generations.

The first is the Harlow family.

Danny Harlow (deceased)
Noelle Harlow

Jaden Harlow (their son)
Helena Harlow
Isabella Harlow
Logan Harlow

and the other is my beloved Finnish family.
The Kinnunen family. (:

Aapo Kinnunen (deceased)
Suki Kinnunen (deceased)

Ville Kinnunen (elder)
Hanna Kinnunen (elder)
Eliisa Kinnunen (adult)
Jukka Kinnunen (adult)

Jukka Kinnunen
Heidi Kinnunen (African American woman..not Finn at all)
Johan Kinnunen (college student)
Suri Kinnunen (super smart Overachiever teen)
Ville Kinnunen (rebelious teen)
Eikki Kinnunen (child, twin to Emilia)
Emilia (child, twin to Eikki)
Mika (toddler)

They just make such adorable children..I couldn't stop!

Cute finnish names, XxHaileySpacklexX. I used to have Tarja and Mikko in my game, they were adults, a brother and a sister, and now I want to create them as teens, and give them a large family, but I couldn't think of Finnish names. Gotta find them ,a nd use some of yours.
I just discovered that if I lack fantasy for nameing, I name males Erik, and females Anna or Ingrid. Damnit, I have 4 Eriks in my game already.

I've started recreating characters based on some "famous figures of sim-history" (the sims everyone knows). I don't usually give them exactly the same names they had, but still:
The Landgraabs, owners of most businesses in the 'hood:
father: Klaas Landgraab
mother: Kirsten Langraab
son (the heir) Christer Landgraab
the Calientes (gold-digger sisters, hot and attractive, and now with really Mediterranean looks)
Donna Caliente
Lucia Caliente
The Holms (made after the Pleasants, but don't looks like them and don't have their names)
Hildur Holm, the mother, the mayor of the town
Tomas Holm (born Linder), the father, changed his lastname
Ingeborga Holm (the rebelious Goth daughter)
Sanna Holm (cute, girlie, just too sweet and too nice, so I even don't like her)
The Bergendahls (3 bros made after the Curious brothers from Strangetown, I don't want them to have alien babies, but they'll be the only ones who make and use Servos)
Bengt Bergendahl
Bernard Bergendahl
Bert Bergendahl

Natasha Una (i didn't give her another name, I jast made her look prettier, and her personality is basically the same)
I'm thinking about remaking the Goths, and killing the mother of the family, so that the calients could try getting married to the rich widower.

I like naming my sims with themes depending on the family.

For instance, I named Pascal Curious's son Isaac after Isaac Newton and Regan and Cornwall Capp's daughter Iris, who is a character in Shakespeare's play, The Tempest.

do people name their sims with soap opera names? (i.e Locke Hamilton, Lace Waterton) what do you guys name your sims?

Nalia

I don't use soap opera names, I don't even watch this kind of shows. I have created a Japanese 'hood and use normal Jap names (Ryuki, Hiroyuki, Yashamaru, Yuuki) and few names related to weather elements, particular in pets (Stormy, Snow, Rain).

One of my favorite names for a sim was Bonita Caliente - she was the daughter of Nina Caliente and a CAS. Unfortunately Bonita Caliente didn't live up to her name as an adult.

I use mostly Japanese and Chinese names, because it makes the names more exotic and interesting to me in game. I use fakenamegenerator.com to come up with names for sims, as I have no sort of knowledge of asian names myself.

My grandma had an old unique names baby book that not only gives names but also name suggestions (I learned a name like Heather Amanda Greene is not good because of the initials H.A.G. :P), most popular names in ALL countries, the most popular name in the world (which is Muhammad), and even more!

And when I can't find that book or can't find any good names for the sim in it, Google is my best friend. :)

Or I look into my family tree or my friends' family trees to see if their great-great-great blah blah blahs had some interesting names.

I also use Babelfish to translate boring old words into cool meanings

And I also combine a few words to make interesting names...

My list could go on but my fingers are getting tired lol! ;P

Recently I've been using:
http://www.babynames.com/
to get name suggestions so that names fit with characters.

Some names, in case you care:
Celandine = Flower
Fleur = Flower
Alan = Little rock
Avani = Earth
Alexander = Defender of the people
Pierce = Rock
Marcy = Warlike
Lily = Flower
Ashleigh = From the ash tree field (although I interpret this one as just "field")

Some other names that I made before I used this website:
Penelope, Chelsea, Devyn, Howie, Elisabeth

Also, I take names from books (okay, Harry Potter often times.) But if I want the neighborhood to mimic a specific book (well, Harry Potter) then I'll steal names from the book ;)

I don't have themes as a general rule, but I made an exception for the Founding (and Legacy) family of my Build-a-City hood:

Founder: Acacia (I chose a matriarchal legacy, whose family "hobby" is Nature)
Gen #2: Brooke
Gen #3: Cherry

Gen #4 will be Daisy, as I'm using the alphabet to keep the generations straight in that family. Spares also get the same initial, but don't have a "natural" name. Once they move out, they're free to name their children whatever they like!

I only bought Sims 2 when it started appearing cheap on e-bay, but I played original Sims off and on for a long time and always had pun names. The one I'm proudest of is Larry Penates. (For the non-classically trained among us, the household gods of ancient Rome were the lares and penates.) Quite possibly the most egregiously bad one I ever came up with was Candide Yams. I really liked making Sims with pun names and marrying them in such a way that both names were still puns, as when Marian Apparition married Telly Vizion.

For my core Sims2 characters, I made one character for each aspiration and sent them to college as a group under the Alma Mater Grant: Sage Ann Onions (knowledge), Ernest Munny (Finance), Sadie Hawkins (Romance; not a pun but couldn't resist it), Greg Aerious (Popularitry), Dom Estic (Family), Eppie Curian (Pleasure). They left families behind: Sage Ann's parents Red and Livva Ann, their dog French, and her little brother Oliver (I'm still kicking myself for leaving out Pearl and Vidalia), Ernest's mother Mary, Greg's mother Hilary, Dom's mother Madge, and Eppie's parents Marie and Pierre. The big family in the neighborhood, however, is the Hawkins clan, for which as a birdwatcher I felt obliged to go whole hog. Goz and Kitty started with Sadie, Cooper, Harris, and Merlin, and have since produced little girls named Pigeon and Sparrow. Kitty is currently again pregnant: Marsha if a girl, Swainson if a boy. Unless she has twins she won't live long enough to do both names. Their dog is named Lady, which is only a pun if you're a fantasy film fan from the 80s. Which I am, so there.

Needing friends and potential mates for all those Hawkinses, I also created the Skirt family: Gene, Lacy, Georgette, Minnie, and Polly Esther. Potential romantic interests I added to the university are Clovis Point (archeology joke; his kids will have names like Magdalena, Andice, Angostura, etc.), Maddy Moiselle, and the Gay twins Ben and Leslie.

Clovis Point. I'm sorry, I adore puns and I took an archaeology class once... I ran across Clovis in another thread and thought, 'geez, why does that guy sound so familiar?' :help:

Peni Griffin

It's nice to be appreciated. :) I'm cruelly considering letting him get Sadie Hawkins pregnant despite all her precautions, and them reluctantly "doing the right thing," just so I can have little Angostura, Andice, Magdalen, and Folsom Points running around. As he's developed, he is not going to scatter his seed all over the neighborhood for this purpose; he's nicer than that.

But I'm kind of a nerd on that point.
(http://penigriffin.blogspot.com/ and look for archeology tags, if you care; I could get waaaaay off topic on this one...)

BTW, Kitty had her baby and it was twin girls, Marsha and Harriet (which is a stretch, but I was desperate). We're going for 10 now, so I still have a shot at Swainson, but I don't know what to do if she pops out more girls.

I have always been one who obsesses over giving unique, cool-sounding names to my sims (and characters in stories I write), rather than just go with the norm...Ashley, Joe, Cassy, Rick, etc. I'm almost always keeping my eyes open for names...I find a lot of my names online, but also pick them up from watching TV or reading books.

One of the ways I've always gone about last names is I look around me at objects surrounding my computer and make the sim's last name that. For example a sim could have the last name Permanent (for permanent markers), Corkboard, or Panda. If I've named too many sims by looking at the objects around me, since I play sims in the same location every time, I turn on the radio and pick a random word from the song currently being sung to make the last name. They may sound silly sometimes, but it still works.

First names don't come as easy for me, but I've tried to create lists for specific neighborhoods ahead of time, so Riverblossom hills has a certain list of more earthy names, my Victorian themed neighborhood has names that fit that era, and my legacy list of names covers a large amount of post-it-notes.

I'll share the names of the sims in my legacy so far, since they are the largest bunch of sims I have been responsible for naming.

Any sims who were not of my own creation (aka, they are maxis-made, townies, or NPC, meaning I did not chose their name) will have their names in italics. Twins will be specified as such.

Oh, dear.

I was thinking idly about my Romance Sim Mary Munny, who as I created her in CAS with a teen son has developed into an older woman who collects young men; and it occurs to me that I need to do that again and name the new one Felice Concolor.

I often use the Harry Potter Lexicon which wizard section to get good names, its perfect for slightly oddball english names :D

i've also got the HP townie names mod installed though which is great and means my sims can marry people called 'Lockhart' rather than Trottier :)

I'll admit I got fed up of constantly going back to an online name generator (or trying to pick a name from random items) that I looked up the top 500 names for girls and boys in the US since 1950 (although I am thinking about revising it to the top 1000), and combined it with the 'most common' (in reality, any name which occured in more than 0.001% of the population in the 1990 census) surnames. I then run it through a random generator I got from MATY, and that gives me my non-townie names.

In total it means I have 956 male names, 1195 female names, and 18,840 surnames, and random generations give me names such as Ezekiel Lukens, Precious Heckel, Forrest Mier, and Melany Delapaz. Some sims I do have definite names I'll want to use (for instance, Robert Creekmore's children were named Ewan, Devin and Diane all without me touching a name generator), others I'll know the name I want but still need to search for a list (Kendra Nyx's children are all named after gemstones/types of rock), and still yet more I turn to a random name generator and choose the one I like the sound of.

Since I'm a dork, I tend to follow the pre-existing naming themes when naming children born to premades. For example, the youngest Smith child in my game is named Jane, General Buzz has another son named Howitzer, Pascal has twins named Cobol and Fortran, Crystal has a daughter named Ruby, etc. Basically, I like to choose names that sound like something I think the characters would name their children... even if the name is a bad pun, or is just plain weird :P

When I'm creating new characters in CAS -- usually aliens -- I follow certain naming conventions that I've set up for whatever alien species they are. Last names tend to be rather random; I just pull whatever sounds right with the first name.

Since I'm a dork, I tend to follow the pre-existing naming themes when naming children born to premades.
I actually do the same thing, I even went so far as to name any pets added according to the theme, so the Grunt family now has a pair of rotweilers (sp?) named Hummer and Jeep.

As for original character sims, I've been known to use names which I personally love or love the sound of, but know that I could never stick a real-life person with (they'd grow up hating their name and you):
Dexter, Phoenix, Lance, Julien, etc.

Then there's the other theme names, like with the nature-based Wiccan farming and crafting family (from a previous game I need to re-create) based on nature/the natural world (though it mostly consisted of tree/plant-based names):
Brooke, Willow, Skye, Ash, Rowan, Daisy, etc.

The aliens and alien spawn who end up named after stars/constellations/planets/things to do with astronomy in general:
Deneb, Persei, Andromeda, Cassiopeia...
Right now I even have a set of six sibling girls in the Smithe family who share what is basically the same name, Leonis. They're Beta Leonis, Delta Leonis, Epsilon Leonis, Omicron Leonis, Mu Leonis, and Nu Leonis Smithe.

There's also the family who is ancient Egyptian in origin, whose children are given Egyptian names (at least, that's what the sites said, though I suspect that a lot of them are modern Egyptian, not ancient, but I still use them anyway because I like how they sound or their meaning):
Akila/Akil (intelligent), Shani (wonderful), Zahira (flower), Bakari (noble oath), Chigaru (hound), Safiya (pure), Azizi (precious), In-herit (He who brings back the distant one).

And then there are the few pun, joke, or in-joke names that I have (sometimes I use them to punish townies or really irritating sims by re-naming them that). Some examples from a brothel I was trying to start up:
Wyld Rider, Wanda Swallow, Debbie Dusdallas, her sister Trixie, Bounhdi Houkh'er (he provided a "special" type of service), Nancy Nurse (also "specialty"), and their pimp, named A Pimp Named Slickback (you'd have to watch the tv show The Boondocks to get that one). :heyhey:

I admit to once having a character-based sim whose father was an alcoholic (and just basically a bad person) who, in the series was never given a name, so I just named him "Drunkie" before I killed him off (I put his relationship level at the same that he had with his kids in the series, so the sim-versions ended up pointing and laughing and cheering when he died!).

I usually use very common english names, but sometimes I use themes like HP's Black family, or some country. like at the moment I have Swedish and Finnish names in use. I also like to use mythological names and with Aliens I use astrological names. Last names are almost every time different, I use some last names I have found from books, movies, tv-shows etc. I try to give the babies the names that would work with the parents. If the parent are witches I like to use mythological names.

I usually import concepts from my own experiences. For example, I have sims that are supposed to resemble the Gym Leaders\Elite Four\Frontier Brains of the Pokemon series. However, because the series is populated by one named people, I decided to give them a last name and it usually is a reference to the region they came from.

However, my game also has real last names. I used mine for my sim family (Rich) and no, I'm not kidding. Despite what you might think with my last name, I actually come from a Catholic background.

Names of sims I made up myself?

Irene Zweibeck
David Brandes (named after a music producer in Europe)
Gary Magnet

So, yes, the game is more complex when you make things happen.

My favorite of all time I found on the Sims 2 when I first began playing it was....
"Goopy Gillsgarbo"

The rest are hilarious, but Goopy remains the best...lol! :giggler:

Usually I just pick names I like (that goes for both first and last names), or names of people I know (although I don't try to base those sims on the people they're named after. I prefer that they be their own people, or rather sims, I guess!). Othertimes I'll name sims something that corresponds to the type of sim I want them to be. For example, if I make a female sim and decide I want her to be an outdoorsy type, I might give her Meadow or River or something as a first or last name.

Similarily, I will sometimes name sim babies for something relating to their birth (by that I mean, for example, a baby girl born in the fall might be named Autumn, or a baby born outdoors might have a name that reflects that. Don't worry, I don't name them after things relating to the actual birth process!) or background. For example, Brandi (formerly Brandi Broke) and Darren Dreamer's youngest daughter is an alien, the result, as you can guess, of Darren getting abducted by and then impregnated by aliens. So I named her Starlette, as a reference to her cosmic roots.

Also, I plan to give Linus and Stella (formerly Stella Terrano) Burb's baby-on-the-way, a well as any future children, a name that reflects his/her alien heritiage (Stella is a premade alien student who comes with University).

And if I were ever to have Leod McGregor get married and have children, they would definitely have Scottish names! Similarly, if I go through with my plan to have Don Lothario spread his seed all over Pleasantview, his children will probably have Italian names, since he appears to be meant to be of Italian ancestry.

A third way I name sims is to simply give them a first name that fits their last name.

I try to combine the names of the mother and father in the child's first name. As an example, the son of Adam and Eve might be Ava, and their son might be Ed. I end up with some strange names that way, but it helps me keep track of who's related to whom when I run into great-great-grand uncles on community lots and don't recognize them. When I create a sim from scratch, I generally have their name mean something, like "A. Lazy Slacker" when I create a totally unmotivated slug, etc. When pairing sims off, I make sure the one with the better surname does the proposing/marrying, so their surname is handed down to the next generation.Oh my god! So I'm not the only one that does that. That's the exact same reason I do that too. I have some really weird names that way but... I like them honestly.

I'm just made a new University student to feed the Greeks - Dulcie deLeche. And this afternoon I realized the next Hispanic I make needs to be Hallie Pena (with an enye, obviously). (If you don't get those, go to the ethnic foods section of your grocery store.)

But first, it's time for another family of downslopers to move into Drama Acres: Hi Thyme, a divorced Pleasure sim dad, and the two illegitimate daughters by different mothers that caused his divorce, Justine and Rosemary.

Or should it be Hamilton Beach and his three daughters: Sandy, Daytona, and Virginia? Hmmmm...

What nice names there are. I usually stick with quite normal names, though I try to make them fit for ethnic groups and such. (My red-heads usually get irish or old-english names, and such).
And that turned out to be a bit difficult with my alien-family.
They ended up a bit strange, I guess:
Dad: Zuulon Xeeres (Alien)
Mum: Glorietta Xeeres (A latina)
Daughter: Ziiria Xeeres (Alien-greenish)
Daughter: Zaara Xeeres (Alien-greenish)
Son: Zoorion Xeeres (Alien-greenish)
Son: Zeeres Xeeres (Alien-greenish)
Son: Caspian (latino, took after his mother)
Son: Tyron (an alien-abduction child of his father; though I have Almighty Hat's Fairy-Alien-Abduction hack, so he is basicly a fairy)

I had to test for a glitch-causing piece of content, which left me with lots of downtime waiting for things to load, shut down, load again, etc. I passed the time by brainstorming names, though I don't make them often. Some of these need specialist knowledge.

Dolly Grip
Lionel Trane
August, April, June, May, Day or Knight. Sunni would also work with Day.
Lil O'Lady
Dot Matrix
Art Gallery
Al Dante or Fresco
Monty Carlo or Verde (second is an archeology joke)
Rose Bush or Garden or Airy; also Janis Airy or Herb Garden
Lily Pond
Chris and Martin Mass. Their cat or dog, obviously, would be black and named Midnight.
Geography jokes: Alice, Leon, Barton, Hamilton, Bandera Springs.
Olive Oil
Pearl Diver
Pat Pending (a transsexual, obviously)
Daisy and Helen Wheels
Mack Truck
Van Guard
Sam and Beverly Hill
Cord, Ash, Holly, Cherry Wood
Rosetta and Miles Stone
Pepper Spray
Penny Stocks, or Arcade, or Loafer
Justin Boots (or Rider, or Roper)

My only real genius set of names has come up. I wanted to make a Sherlock Holmes based community but I wasn't going to go all out and reproduce Victorian London. So I'm populating an apartment building with expies.

Leif Sigerson -- single elderly genius, the Holmes character. (Yeah, I made them elders, I dunno why.) Sigerson was one of the names Holmes used while gallivanting around Europe in those two years when London thought he was dead. Leif because ... he's Norwegian, it's a good heroic Norwegian name.

Hamish Burke -- widower and retired doctor. Hamish is John Watson's middle name, and Burke is the surname of one of my favourite Watson-portraying actors.

Mary Burke -- Hamish's daughter, who lives with her father and her little family. Mary was the name of Watson's wife in the novels. I figure if there was a daughter she would also have been Mary. In the books Mary Watson (nee Morstan) died after only a few years of marriage.

Gerald Lestrade -- Mary's husband. It turns out we never found out Lestrade's first name in the books -- we just know his first initial, G. I think I read some fanfiction where he was called Gerald, but I could have sworn it was Canon... oh well.

Violet -- Mary and Gerald's little girl. Because half the incidental female characters in the books were named Violet. :P

Basker -- the hound dog. ;)

I like to choose names that are puns at times (onlint thesaurus can help with this), or hunt for ethnic names, or names from certain regions, for various sims. The pun-style names can be fun, and make it easy to remember what that family is about, and the others simply add realism. I did get a bit picked on when my son realized the name I had for the head of a Korean family. Used Lee for the last name (being common), and didn't even realize I had chosen "Stan". yeah, "Stan Lee". :D

My current legacy family (not that I really play like a proper legacy...)

Scott and Alysson Flynn (both deceased) and their ten children:

Katie, married to Josh Keith, who have three sets of twins, Bowen and Caitlyn, Ilana (Lani) and Shoshana (Shani), and Xavier and Zoe. Bowen is married to Maisie and they have two children, Zachary (Bowen's stepson) and Hollie. Caitlyn is married to Kaelin Brake, and they have (thank you Inteen) Joshua, Lauren and Samuel.

Toby, married to Hannah, who have two sons, Chester and Mason

Rosie, married to Eddie Harris, who have five children: Kallie, Gracie, Tommy, and twins Jessie and Millie

Alexander, married to Chloe, who have four children: Maddie, Yasmine, Hugo and Olivia

Henry, who I got bored of so he now lives in my families bin, about 30 days younger than his twin brother...

William, married to Lizzie, who have eleven children: Nicholas, Oscar, Pippy (triplets), Quinn (who is gay, but still in the closet), Rebekah (his twin sister), Shiloh (sadly deceased), Tyler and Uriah (more twins) and VJ, Will and Xanthe (more triplets)

Edward, married to Lily, who have three sons, Kenzie and twins Phoenix and Sorrell

James, married to Izzie, who have twin daughters: Violet and Poppy

Daisy, married to Callum Lawrence, who have seven children: Fallon, Felicity, Faith, Felix, Franklin, Fraser and Francesca

and last but not least, Benjamin, married to Neve, who have eight children: twins Phoebe and Darryl, Stellan, Cullen, Jayden, and then triplets, Azaria, Septimus (Sep) and Korah

What do I name my sims, well the first thing off thetop of my head. / seprates twins, [] indicates grand children {} indicates great grandchildren.

For example first laptop Nervous subject had:

Angry (changed to King had British [Dan], Love, Eat, and Shinagami/Hikari)
Ferfil (keeping Subject would have Jessie, Nervous, Subject, and Chase [Willy/Silly, Faith, Hope]. Under Curious she'd have Annie, Jezi, Hilbert [=^_^=Deppiesse], Illard, Ist, Brittany [Olive {Brendon, Lola}, Fril/Fray], Trent/Dune and Ima.)
Living (Love/Paine, Cactus)
Phucket (Lim/Hon)
Merry
Grace (Brute then under Grunt she had Lime/Lemon, Peppy, Lilly)
Satisfied (Changed to Curious had Elda)
Testy (changed to Twsist had Tukky)
Nervous (Sun/Shiney, Peppi [Sue], Unwilling, Lola, Lola)
Elise (Under McGraw had Pattie)
Mne
Gin/Tonic
Fed/Ex (Fed would have Crystal / Ex would ahve Hope4, Mi, and Becker)

And that is just to name a few. And I should note yes Nervous had two daughters named Lola that is not a typo just a brain glitch on my end. Fun fact I also have a Swiggles Curious who is brother whole brother to the Sim in my icon which is named Ben Curious. :jest:

In Shiloh my Legacy family are the Sugarmans:

Elijah and Shayla Sugarman have four children, Amaya, Matthew and twins James and Sasha. Amaya is married to Charles "CJ" Ellington and they have 3 children: Aaliyah, Charnelle and baby Elijah (Amaya named him after her Dad). Matthew is married to Kymora (former Lydia Courdec of Takezumi) and they have twins Nathaniel and David. James and Sasha are unmarried and attending Shiloh State University.

CJ's parents are Charles and Khadijah Ellington. They had only two children CJ and Malia (Malia is unmarried attending University with James and Sasha).

Kwaggi Amadu is the twin brother of Khadijah Ellington. He had 2 Children by his first wife Sabeen, Kenya and Amir. Kwaggi divorces Sabeen and married his lover Solange Dupree and they have a daugher together named Nia.

There is also the Whitney-Flieg Family. Skye Whitney has a son Joshua Bernard Whitney-Arrington. Joshua's father is Bernard Arrington the town romeo. Skye went on a mountain vacation and fell in love with Cole Fleig. The married and have had 3 children together: Aaron Cole Whitney-Fleig and twins Sabrina and Samantha.

Arturo and Maria Salinas are an Elder couple. Arturo is a famous Jazz muscian and after traveling on the road so much he and wife Maria settled in Shiloh and adopted two children Sinead and Donovan. Unfortuately, Maria passed away from old age and Donovan drowned in the family pool. Sinead is at College. Sinead has the Paranormal LTW, so perhaps we will resurrect Maria and Donovan.

I'm currently playing four families:

The Tomlin family, who name their kids with names which are fairly modern but not too unusual (Aadyn, Johannah and Elliot)
The Rooke family, who give their kids biblical names (Joseph, Ruth and Naomi)
The James family, who give their kids fairly unrelated names - just random ones I like, really (Makayla, Sasha, Jade, Jack and Derren)
The Heath family, who have one adopted daughter from Ethopia (Hope) and one biological daughter (Maddison - named because it was fairly similar to her mother's name, Amelia, or at least Milly and Maddie were) and they're about to adopt Hope's little brother Emanuel who they call Mannie. Then they'll have sextuplets and I have no idea what they'll name them. Yeah, they don't really have a naming pattern...

I love making up names for characters/sims, especially the surnames. When I get stuck I break out the dictionaries - Oxford Dictionary of First Names, and the Dictionary of English Place Names. And if I'm really stuck, the so-old-it-has-no-name family dictionary. Names are fun!

Last names depend on the characters. I'll often take place names or will create something silly. In Sims 1, I think I was more creative such as when I created the couple: Lee and Ann Perrins. *snerk* or Lilly Putian. From someone on TSO, I borrowed Rose Budd. You have to admit that "Ka Ching" isn't quite as...neat. I often like names that mimic Sim or are just "Sim" (Simmer/Simptom/Symm) or Townie (Townsend/Towner/Deville/Douville).

Schadenfreude is literally "damage/hurt-joy," and is better translated as "malicious glee."

Excuse me if your first language is German and usage is different. In English, it is universally used as the term for the enjoyment you get at somebody else's distress; usually with an element of self-righteousness. So laughing at slapstick humor such as Wile E. Coyote's absurd mishaps could be described as schadenfreude; but the term is more likely to be used when the girl who lorded it over you in high school appears at the reunion overweight and twice-divorced, or some guy cuts you off in traffic and two blocks later you see him in an intimate position with a light pole. Most English-speakers treat it as a coinage of Freud's.

In the Munchkin Bites card game, one of the items that gives bonuses is the Schadenfreudian Slip.

I have started using more interesting names in my game now, thanks to this thread. :)
My new favourite Sim, steadily working her way up the Slacker career track, is Maris Piper. She is a dedicated potato fanatic who is searching for a husband that shares her passion. I might marry her off to a townie or something and make a legacy. :D

Oh, fun thread! I forget my legacy families names, since I accidently deleted them, so my favorite names:
Female:
Miley
Brittanty
Selena
Pia
Sage
Sophia
Amanda
Destiny
Annabell
Willow
Bella
Etc..

Male:
Adam
James
Paul(It's fun for naming alien boys, I use it all the time!)
Peter
Andrew
Jake
Logan
Jordan
Morgan
Etc...

So that's it, and I can't tell you how many times I've used ''Anderson'' for a last name! And phone books are good places to get names, or cheat and use some celebrity names. XD
(Why do you think we have American Idol?)

I suck at making generations of families, and thus am reasonably terrible at giving them last and first names. I think I'll be taking inspiration from this thread :)
The very first family I created on the Sims 2 was the "Pop" family :'D how utterly pathetic! But I love them, haha
Ooh, and the first family I made on the Sims 1...can't remember their last name, but the father was called "Gooby" thanks to the input of my own dad, lol

I'm reading a book on human origins and I suddenly thought: I could make a whole family with the nicknames of the fossils! Lucy, of course; and Zinj; Toumai, Selam; and so on. I could then have the Hominid family! It would be almost worth doing a Test of Time challenge just to justify that!

Stop me before I name again...

I am currently only playing Pleasantview. Most of my families have some sort of first name theme. The Goths all have Greek first names, The Lotharios have Italian names, The Dreamers have names that start with the letter D, and the Centowski family has Hebrew names. The only family that doesn't have any theme is the Brokes because there's just too many of them in my game. For them, I either pick names that I like, or I use Social Security's top baby names list.

I always find naming and character bios takes me the longest out of their whole creations. If I'm not 100% happy wit the name, I won't be able to confirm the entire family :P I'm a bit OCD when it comes to my sims

moonlight_frog
22nd Jan 2012, 05:26 AM
Haha, I never do the character bios- takes too long, and I would eventually have to update them anyway, so what's the use? I sometimes fill in the household summary, but that's rare as well.

I only take a little time to come up with names. Sometimes I have a list of names that I want to use, and other times I name my sims on a whim. My most recent names paid homage to various characters from Batman. I have 2 female characters, Mira and her daughter Chloe, with the last name Paisley. Paisley comes from Pamela Isley, a.k.a. Poison Ivy. In my TOT challenge, I named a pair of twins Zur-En-Arrh (this name is significant to Batman) and Selihoh (based on Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman; I tried to make the name sound somewhat primitive). Yeah, I'm a little obsessed... (okay, maybe a lot more obsessed than I should be) :P

The neighbourhood I'm currently playing most is Riverblossom Hills and I very recently made a list of all the playables so I could work out just how many bubba sims had been born so far - so...here's the names I've chosen for them...

Sandra Roth has 3 girls called Santana, Chelsea and Mercedes
Leod McGreggor's sons are Justin and Tyler
Gabe O'Mackey and Patricia Wan have had Gabriella and Tian
Jules O'Mackey's kids are Joseph, Sarah and Jaden
Jacob Martin's kids are Elena, Michael and Mitchell (twins)
Andrew Martin married Cleo and had Victoria and Andrew Jr (AJ)
The Greenmans welcomed 4 more plantspawns: Florent (male), Lily, Tulip and Blossom, as well as a non plantsim daughter, Jasmine
The various 3rd gen Greenmans are: Morley, Abraham, Martin, Juanita and Hiro (Daisy's brood), Francis, Greengrass, Flora, Briar and Bramble
The Ottomas clan have added Dora and Tara (twins) and Frankie, then the next gen consist so far of Bracken, Brook, Fern, Forest, Sky (Sharla's kids with former paperboy River), Robson and Jerome (twins), Jay, Dylan and Deena (twins)

And other born-in-game sims:
Karen
Lyra
Georgia
Connie
Christina
Bithiah (sister to Isaiah Gavigan)
Emma
Hope
Faith
Jade
Natalia
Esther

Ronnie
Daniel
Lennox
Lewis
Noah
Sonny
Dante
Zachariah (Isaiah Gavigan's first son)
Jeremiah (and his second...am very much going for biblical names for the Gavigans)
Hugo

I think that's all :/

Peni Griffin
22nd Jan 2012, 04:08 PM
My Gavigans are Biblical, too - Mary, Nathan, and Isaiah establishes the theme nicely. I've got Ezekial ('cause I can't spell), the twins Naomi and Jeremiah, and Isaiah's two, Miguel (because his mother is Sophie Miguel, Miguel = Michael in Spanish), and Deborah. Ezekial took his wife's name, when he married Pigeon Hawkins, and the only possible name for their daughter was therefore Dove.

My second generation sims are all just getting married and having kids, so I'm still establishing naming themes for the various families. But at the moment:

Derren and Leonie James have Harrison, Leonie's son from her first marriage and their baby Honor. I didn't do the H thing intentionally, but I think if they have any more kids they'll have to begin with H now.

Elliot and Aurora Tomlin went for a J theme, since I knew they were going to have lots of kids and J is a good letter for names, with Josette and Jonah.

Ruth Rooke and Amin Sims have just had twins, and since I decided Amin ought to be middle-eastern, their daughters have Arabic names: Imani Amber (faith) and Maliha Jasmine (good).

Maddie Heath and Seth Couderc have Maddie's son Casey and their daughter Isabella "Bella" Maddison. Casey was named after his grandfather and Bella was just a name I liked with her middle name after her mother.

Aadyn and Makayla Tomlin have three children, Lennox Aadyn, Savannah Cassandra and Sienna Grace. The middle names are after their father and two grandmothers. I quite like children getting relatives names as middle names; I do it quite a lot.

Hope and Sasha James have Jason Sasha, Thomas Nathan "Nat", Daniel Jacob "Danny", Amelia Hope "Milly" and Oliver William "Olly". Again, various names and middle names belong to relatives, but apart from that no theme, except the triplets names all ending in "y".

Joseph and Johannah Rooke have Adah Johannah Suzanna (Middle names for a mother and paternal grandmother) and Maria Sarah Grace (Middle names for aunt and maternal grandmother.

I think that's about it.

Usually, I name my self-sim Jenna da Capo(not my real name but my internet alias). And I often make her rather lazy and sloppy since I'm a lazy slob, on the shy side, and often rather playful and VERY nice. She usually has brown hair in one of the long, flowing default styles, and glasses.

For the Curious family, all the kids are named after characters from Star Trek and Babylon 5(with one exception - Pascal's first son is always named Tycho). I'll often name the first alien daughter Delenn. Nervous' first alien child, a daughter, was named Olive after his mother, though the rest of his kids had names of mythological deities, planets and moons. His wife had twins the first try, and he named them Jupiter and Miranda. His second alien child, a son, was named Helios.

With Ajay Loner, his first alien child was named Alita after the titular character from the manga Battle Angel Alita. Might keep an anime theme with this guy. The Curious children, after moving out and getting married, will name their kids after their grandparents and great-grandparents, and then later on their daddies.

In the Pleasant household, the megahood where I didn't let Daniel woohoo the maid, he and Mary-Sue got young again and had a son that I named Wally after a singer that I heard from the Dr. Demento show. If their next child is a daughter I'll probably name her after my grandma, who passed away a couple nights ago.

In other families, I often name characters after grandparents or aunts, or other people I know. In the original Sims game, I started a family with a man and woman named after my maternal grandparents - Lois and Raymond. Their first child was a daughter, which I named after my mum, and I gave her a really happy childhood. Also had them adopt lots of kids, and had Lois study up on mechanical so she could make money by doing magic tricks. With the ingredients she bought, the kids were able to turn into adults once their grades were high enough.

You totally should have a humongous family with 20 or so kids and give them all J names, just like the Duggars. That is, if you can think of 20 names. And as long as your game doesn't crash from too many sims on one lot. LOL

Namessss.... NAAAAAMEEES. I love naming things.

I had a custom hood that got buggy (only minorly, but annoying enough that I ceased play) and I had more sims with more fun names. The neighborhood was called Cottonwood and had an 'old south' plan to it, ie, apartment complexes called Plantation Place and Gentry Town Houses, and a custom uni called King University, a play on 'King Cotton.' The sims were as follows:

The Tremble family, which consisted of Titan Tremble , the eldest and the patriarch, who had a joined union with a redheaded fella named Jackson. They had six children. The triplets, Elian, Spartacus, and Maike, followed by twins Willow and Claudia, and singleton Lola.

The Goulding family also lived in Cottonwood. This family was headed off by Harris Goulding, a doctor and business owner who ran a successful local Italian place. His wife was Maiche, and they had one daughter called Elle who married Spartacus Tremble.

The Dehl family was one of my favorite families, this included Martin and Kate Dehl and their three sons, Johannes and younger twin brothers Marius and Julius.

The de Saint-Exupéry family of Cottonwood also existed, so named because I have one of these families in every hood. The Little Prince is one of my favorite books and I love to have a little piece of the author in my game. The Cottonwood family includes the mother and father, Leonard and Moira, and four children, Lysander, Jolie, Ewan, and Mollie.

I also had a single sim living in the aforementioned Gentry Town Houses named Jonah Thimble who was getting geared up to marry Maike Tremble.

I don't really play this hood anymore. :/ I now play Pleasantview, which I have remodeled and conformed to my will... but I really spend all my time in Bluewater Village attached to Pleasantview.

In Pleasantview I have one family, the family of Tatum de Saint-Exupéry (it's a pattern!!) and he's an elder now raising his only son, child aged Milo, after his wife died in a lightning storm.

In Bluewater, I have mother and daughter pair Niobe and Lilly Noble, elder and adult, running a cute flower and baked goods shop. I also have a fella called Tesla Narrow raising his alien daughter, Leah, and newlyweds Davenport and Mari Bugle.

I actually have a little sims-dedicated notebook which I keep in a drawer of my computer desk. It contains all the info I need for my game, like cheats, job descriptions, zodiac sign compatibility and the like.
And guess what, it also has a big fat list of female, male and family names I've gathered from various sources. Very convenient for naming that new sim baby that just joined the family without breaking a sweat.

Here are some entries:
FEMALE NAMES:
-Anette
-Harriett
-Ava
-Amanda
-Arlene
-Rita
-Wilhelmina
-June
-Jodie
-Mildred
-Daphne
-Hedy
-Justicia
-Delilah
-Elsie
-Ingrid
-Ansea
-Magdalene
-Felicia
-Ericka
-Cora
-Phaedre
-Genevieve
-Shiva
-Isabella
As you can see, I tend to go for the less common names. And yes, I've actually used these on some of my sims. I already have Ingrid, Daphne, Amanda, Ericka, Felicia, Wilhelmina and Isabella Sims wandering around my hood.

MALE NAMES:
-Clayton
-Constantine
-Theodor
-Rabastan
-Hal
-Osvald
-Dante
-Cory
-Slade
-Heath
-Damien
-Elias
-Samuel
-Noah
-Abel
-Ares
-Romulus
-Remus
-Tristan
-Edmond
-Octavian
-Cole
-Bertrand
-Godric
Guys named Rabastan, Hal, Heath, Noah, Clayton and Theodor are already populating my hood. I also have an in-game born called Remus, who is a Young adult at the moment. I have many reasons to fancy that Sim, one of them being that he inherited a tattoo skintone which has a big wolf tattoo on the chest. A nice touch, isn't it?

As for surnames, I'm rather short on them at the moment because I managed to mislay my old notebook, and the new one still hasn't any entries. I guess I'll have to snag some names from this topic. ;)

Hmmm... I certainly have a set of rules in my head about how my sims should be named, and although I follow those rules, I'm not consciously aware of what they all are :D

First things first, I definitely take the personalities of a sim's parents into account when naming it. If my hippy couple have a baby, you can bet it will be named after an exotic flower or an abstract concept. If my upper class sims have a baby, it will be named something respectable and not too extraordinary. If my poser celebrity sims have a baby, it will be given a ridiculous name in line with what our real life celebrities name their brats.

I have themed neighbourhoods which dictate their own naming policies too. My favourite neighbourhood is one I think of as an alternate universe, where the sims live on a cluster of tropical islands and look a little supernatural. Those sims have very unusual names that we don't tend to see everyday in this world.

I also run neighbourhoods where certain ethnicities or nationalities are the majority (for example I have a South American neighbourhood, a Japanese neighbourhood, an Italian neighbourhood, and so on). Needless to say, those neighbourhoods have predominantly Spanish/Portuguese/Japanese/Italian names as necessary. I really enjoy sticking to themes in that way.

And I always cheat to rename all my townie/NPC sims. It takes a long long time to go through them all in SimPE for each neighbourhood, but it's fun to think of a name to match each portrait and it's satisfying when it's done! :)

I should probably be ashamed of myself for this since it's just so groanworthy bad, but...

Usually my Sims have really generic names like George, Andrew, Marie, Lisa, Elena, etc.

In my current hood I'm sort of playing a legacy and my Legacy founders are Terrace and Emaille Dodekan. Their twins are called Carson and Martine.
I'll try this time to give unusual names XD

My favourite male sims names are:
Brandon Revolver
Jerrod Storm
Blake Midnight
Indigo Blue
Nick Rock
Lithium Marsden
Max Golem
Steve Magwuffer
Thackery Jenkins

I made them up myself, I know they're a bit cheesy but I like them! Jerrod is one of my favourite sims at the moment, and probably the best looking ;)

Favourite female names:
Belanna Marsden
Cravallo Prestige
Alyssa Island
Flossy Star (now Flossy Golem)
Test Test (now Test London)
Melody Jenkins
Janey Waney
Tahlia Rose
Liana Modsource
Tracey Dolly
Lois Tring

I was running out of ideas for females, so I named some after films, sims websites, and made up the rest. Test is a sim I made to test jealousy, cheating etc. I made her really slutty and she went around stealing people's boyfriends. Then I wanted to make her a vampire, so she went out with Count Weldon London. But she fell for him, and I was quite fond of her by then, so they got married and had an alien baby who is called Chicago.

Some of my names in Golden Plains:

Gearheads are a mix of rough-sounding names and car-type names: Abe Stutz-Bearcat, Alky Briggs, Bonnie Clydesdale, Diamondback Pepler, Face Morelli, King Shifteigh, Lydia Studebaker, Marianne Esso, Roscoe "Wife Eyes" Goyle, Snake Fedora, Tess Slutbunny

The reason I listed more of them than the other social group townies is that I haven't gotten to a lot of the others yet, so they're still Amanda Carlson, Camryn Lee, etc.

Bohemians: Alice Mucha, Chihiro Origami, Daley Breadman (IIRC I intend for my bakery owners to hire him), Ernestine Waltz, Mary Cassatt
Jocks: Annie Racquet, Chuck Taylor, Clara Wrigley, Tom Volley
Techs: Lily Motorola, Luis Computadora, Sherman Bakelite
General townies: Elisa Rivera, Gus Waxford, Hector Ramirez, Lila Wazowski, Stella Anderson
Socialites: Barmy Fotheringay-Phipps, H. E. Pennypacker II, Maria Elena Dinera, Petra Rittenhouse

Belden: Peter, his wife Helen, and their children Brian, Mart, Trixie, and Bobby (and they should have a dog named Reddy, but I forgot to make him)
Cammareri: Florio and his children Eddie and Sadie
Chicolini: siblings Harry, Maxine, and Art
Costanza: Paul and Margaret and their children Howie, June, Jerry, Betty, and Bobby. Margaret's mother Ida Patterson also lives with them. Considering that they're Catholic I should have given more of their children saints' names.... I've had them for a long time, though (they started off in Pleasantview, then I recreated them in my first retro hood), so I can't imagine them with other names.
Elliot: Ambrose Elliot II, his sister Wilhelmina, his wife Cassandra, and their children Ambrose III ("Amby") and Julia
Firefly: siblings Harry, Ralph, and Buck
Flambeau: Victor and his dog Peppy
Gundlebumps: Sam, his wife Polly, their children Teddy and Daisy, Sam's brother Mart, and Mart's daughter Bonnie
Kinomoto: Seiji, his wife Edie, and their daughter Rosalie
Krakowski: siblings Will and Sue
Le Blanc: siblings Martha and George
Leach: Chester, his wife Millicent, their children Archie, Adrian, and Adele, and their maid Sally Jeeves
Littlebird: siblings Ray and Flora
Loudon: Virgil, his wife Ada, and their children Veronica and Evelyn
Mulligan: Fern
Nettles: Benjamin and his daughter Mary Ellen
Rittenhouse (not related to the socialite townie; I need to change her last name): Merritt B. Rittenhouse II, his wife Martha, and their children Connie, Brenda, and Merritt III
Santiago: sisters Nina and Lina
Valentine: Mike
Vreeland: Anton, his wife Susan, and their children Walter, Nancy, and Alan
Wooster: Clarence, his wife Henrietta, and their son Bertie (and his valet Reginald Jeeves)
Scholfield: Clarence and Henrietta's daughter Penny and her children Freddie, Julia, and Dahlia

Some of my sims are characters from books and movies (the Beldens, Bertie Wooster, Jeeves), alternate universe versions of Maxis sims (the Firefly brothers are based on the Grunt brothers, Victor Flambeau is Don Lothario, and Nina and Lina are the Calientes- surprise!), and some just... are. The Cammareris are based on a family in a sim story on a site that's no longer there... I lightened up their characters so I wouldn't find them too depressing to play. Heh.

I got a lot of my names from movies, books, and TV shows. Firefly, Chicolini, and Rittenhouse are from Marx Brothers movies, and Peppy the dog is named after the woman in the movie The Artist. Vreeland is from the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series of books and Elliot is from Persuasion (awesome book!). Sam Gundlebumps is from an imaginary pig from the TV show Malcolm in the Middle (long story), Valentine is the last name of the main character's best friend on Doug, Costanza is from Seinfeld, and Loudon is from an '80s sitcom called Newhart.

I recently created a new family for the Broken Challenge - single mum Robyn Eleison and her three children Phoebe, Connor and Kaci. I was sorely tempted to use the name Kyrie for one of the kids, and I still might use it for one of Connor's kids...

I usually roll dice or use a randomization program to pick the first letter of the name. I'll look on baby name websites for help. For ethnic names I have a program that lists quite a few male/female names. Last names is a bit harder to find.

When naming my Sims, their first name is picked from the top of my head, or has to do with their last name.
Such as my Supernatural family: "The Odd Family" They had a son and I named him Very. So his name is Very Odd.
And the famous Pleasantview family: "The Broke Family" Brandi's new son was named Uber, so he was Uber Broke. Punny.
Those are families in which I plan not to really play, or have many generations of.
My dynasty families have first names I love like Peter, Jonathan, Brittany, Jana, Mary, Andrew, Elizabeth, and so on.

I either make their last name based on Simlish or what they do.
The Travellers like to travel.
My CAS family the "Croppers" like to farm.
My "Fancy" family is rich, lives in a victorian house, and wears elegant clothing.
For Simlish, I named one family the "Taroo" family. I got Taroo because I find it funny when you command them to do something, something's in the way, they stomp, wave their arms, and yell, "TARRRROOOO!"

Sometimes I go with themes, other times I think of random names.

For example the Gavigans seem to be named after biblical characters so I go with that.
The Veronaville characters are all named after characters in Shakespeare's plays so I go with that as well.

NatteryakToad
1st Aug 2012, 06:44 PM
I quite often use themes, or have all the children in one family begining with the same letter, or have variations of relatives names. For example:

Isabella "Izzy" Heath is named after her aunt, Isabella "Bella" Heath-Couderc.

Continuing the Gavigan's biblical theme, after Isaiah comes Eli, and then twins Hannah and Josiah.

Rhys and Francesca Howell's twins have Welsh names, since Rhys is Welsh, and their middle names are opposite-gender varations of their parents names: Morgan Riece and Tomas Franklin.

Carly and Jay Oates' children are called Cian and Josie, so beginning with the same letter as the parent of the opposite gender.

JJ Heath is, supposedly named for her mother's Holly's two grandmothers, Joyce and Judith, but really she's named after her dad, Jay Oates. JJ's half-brother is called Olay, which Holly reckons is short for Oliver, the name of his father.

Egan and Miriam James' three children all have Greek first names: Zoey Brooklyn, Electra Suzannah and Theo Egan. Zoey's middle name is a variation on Miriam's maiden name, Rooke. Electra's middle name is after Miriam's mother Suzi, and Theo's is obviously after his dad.

Kyle Long-Tomlin is so named because it was the closest his father could find to Kyle's late mother, Makayla.

Mannie and Naomi Heath's children are called Asaph Emanuel (Emanuel after his father, Mannie), Ephraim Joseph (Joseph after his parental grandfather), Isaiah Manasseh (Manneseh as, in the bible, Manasseh and Ephraim are brothers) and Odette Naomi (Naomi after her mother). The names begin with the first four vowels, but I drew a line at having to come up with a decent name begining with U.

Derren and Leonie James married and Derren adopted Leonie's three-year-old son Harrison. They then had baby Honor, and although I wasn't intending an H theme, I followed it up when younger siblings Hayley and Hudson were born.

Ruth and Amin Sims have two sets of twin girls: Imani Amber and Maliha Jasmine, and Raha Amyethest and Hanifa Rose. The girls first names are all Arabic, as I took Amin to be Arabic, and the middle names form two pairs - one flowers and one gems - so Raha is Imani's favourite little sister and Hanifa is Maliha's.

Aadyn Tomlin's three children are Lennox Aadyn (middle name after his dad), Savannah Cassandra (middle name after maternal grandmother) and Sienna Grace (middle name after paternal grandmother). Savannah and Sienna are twins.

Sarah and Matthew Creech are going with a biblical theme. So far they have two boys: Noah Matthew (middle name after uncle) and Reuben Abraham (middle name after maternal grandmother)

Elliot and Aurora Tomlin went for a J theme for their six kids - Josette, Jonah, Jacob, Jessica, Joshua (twins) and Jemimah.

My first family in the Sims: Kia and Mitsubishi Car. They had twins, Ford and Lexus. Thank goodness I rarely played them! My favorite family is the Norris family. The patriarch is named Bruce. I got their name from combining Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris, so they have got to be an epic family! :D

My first family in the Sims: Kia and Mitsubishi Car. They had twins, Ford and Lexus.

I love those names!

I may have to pilfer the concept - it's so adorable!

I've not got much in the way of interesting names in my 'hood at the moment. There's the hippy gay commune (of course...) which is a little strange, but the legacy family is fairly normal. I'm naming the heirs (all female) after my ten best friends through life. So far we've had Caroline, Catherine and Louise. They're DeBateaux (as the offspring of Tara DeBateau and Justin Cleveland in Belladonna Cove). All male offspring of the main family will have names beginning with "J", to honour Justin and his father Jason.

I occassionally take a theme from the name of the marrying in sim. For instance, when Julian DeBateau married Arcadia Collin, their three daughters carried the "arcadia" theme and were named Celeste, Coeli (latin for "Heaven") and Elysia (after the Greek "Elysian Fields"). Their sons rather reflected my Dark Shadows obsession and were named "Barnabas" and "Quentin". *cough*

I name my Sims after their grandparents, so I don't have that many names. But it is kinda confusing if you have 3 Sims with the same first name in one generation, while their grandparent with the same name is still alive xD

I do this too, but usually with great-grandparents. It gets confusing for me too, because now every single sim in my neighbourhood has the same second name (seriously - the men are called Damon and the women are called Frances)!

Usually I pick some common first names like Allison, Mariah, Amy, Louise, Ron, Jerry, Charlie, etc. and some familiar last names like Senf, Rasmussen, Wahlberg, Bethurum, or some funny names like Belle Dandy. In hoods where I'm working on legacy projects, often I make my families matrilineal.

I have a large spreadsheet with first names from several different cultures, and for certain families special additional naming rules apply. Surnames tend to be invented on the sput of the moment and are often not ones you'd find in the real world. To give you an idea, these are the children (not including teens) currently attending classes in my neighbourhood:

- Rashido-Labano Logarint, son of teenage mum Rashida-Labana, who in turn is daughter of Ghanima and granddaughter of Holly Shin (and yes, they all live in the same 2-bed, 4-room house).
- Imane Caliente, daughter of Nina
- Scott and Ralp (not a typo) Ying, sons of Taylor and Scott
- Kimberley and Haf Burb, children of Jennifer
- Twins Ishneet and Ishmeet and younger brother Ra Aspir, children of Anna and Victor.
- Eamonn, Amy and Melissa Summerdream, children of Oberon and Titania
- Poppy-Roop Capp, daughter of Regan
- Pollihenri and Pollijake Smith and younger sister Martha, children of Jenny and Pollination Tech #9 (but living in different houses; the twins are with eldest brother Johnny and his wife Ophelia Nigmos while Martha lives with Jenny)
- Twins Ciliegia and Circolo Valgochimicia, children of Mission
- Twins Alys and Sean Bell, children of Hannah and Isaac
- Najib Pedersen, son of Bella (who has reverted to her maiden name of Goth)

Sometimes I feel sorry for the schoolteachers who must call these names out at registration. Mind you, the previous generation had such gems in it as Koaxis, Montagna, Artesí, Aghminien, SimBane and Elandrae in it, so they're probably used to it by now.

Just as well really - Jenny Smith decided to name her youngest progeny*... ...Chloe-Cee-Jarachi.

* - For now - Jenny's had 15 children, has another on the way, and also has enough Elixir of Life to raise a small army single-handed. Though I do worry all the neighbourhood's grandchildren are going to be related...

I'm taking it's the Jenny Smith of Strangetown? If so, I was wondering what all the kids looked like? Were they a mix or full blown alien skins?

ieta_cassiopeia
20th Sep 2012, 12:03 AM
That is indeed the Jenny Smith of Strangetown. Her natural-born kids had full-blown alien skin and eyes. She did adopt a few, and those had standard skin and eyes (of varying hues).

Hair and facial structure tended to vary a lot. Pollijake and Pollihenri, for example, could pass for their father if they weren't so short and their hair weren't so blonde. Martha looks the spitting image of her mum, except that she has green skin and alien eyes. The others are in between (except, of course, for the adoptees).

I name the firstborn son after his father. A lot of kids get named after recently deceased relatives as well. For others like using old-fashioned names the best( Maria, Franziska, Josefa, Agnes, Cecilia, Elisabeth, Anna, Antonia, Eleonora, Martina, Katharina, Margareta, Magdalena, Stefania, Wilhelmina,..for the ladies. When I use Maria or Anna I usually use them combined with another name for example Maria Christina. For the men I like: Franz, Josef, Karl, Felix, Ernest, Balthasar, Florian, Hans, Jakob, Leopold, Ludwig,..)I do, however, try keep the ethnicity of the neighbourhood in mind so everyone in Veronaville gets Italian names and alien babies get names related to space.

Yazoo

I decided to go with something, a little towards the Japanese side, and I come to love too the names, I have chosen. For instance the meaning of "Yamamoto" is "Mountain True" ((True Mountain))

Eiji means: 1) "eternity, next," 2) "great, peace," 3) "great, second (son)," or 4) "prosperity, peace."

Daiki means: 1) "Great Glory" 2) "Great Noble" or 3) "Great Tree"

Chiharu means: "One Thousand Springs"

Chiasa means: "One Thousand Mornings"

Shinobi means: "Perseverance"

Kazuma means: "True Harmony"

Mai means: "Dance"

Katashi means: "Firmness"

And I really think, Kazuma's name, really works perfectly for Kazuma's personality. And her attempt to save everyone >.>

I've had several neighborhoods that last long and some last very short. It's given me time to compile a list of frequently used names.

Culturally, the names are most of then English, French, or Spanish. I'm from North America so figure. One neighborhood featured Portuguese names because it was modeled after a famous beach there. As an experiment, I named 50 sims using Esperanto names, becauase I could mold a culture after that and make it my own creation. For flavor, minorities in these neighborhoods have been Russian, African, Filipino, Chinese, Korean and German.

Then there's some names I found or made up on my own.
both from Spanish and scientific sources, Mariposa - the butterfly. Which inspired me to name girls from moths, Cydia for instance. (she's a cute 10 year old at the moment). English women are often named April, May, and June. I named the men March and August. Industry inspires some names, because cities are named from industry. Cupro for copper, Thallia for .. you guessed it. Scientific names for trees and fungus became sims and the streets where they live. Hurricanes have female names in America, so Katrina, Rita, and Wilma became popular names. In Asia, they have noun based names, so Asian sims became Xangsane, Milenyo. My very first sim loved to tinker in the basement with a toy machine, so he became Otto Tinker.

What names have you used? Name the rarely used and the frequently used.

I once had a sim called "Bob Bob". I was bored, and it was around 2 or 3 in the morning when I came up with this name.
I remember in my english class we had to make up names, and I made 4 random names, I also used these I the sims once:
Uran Idiot
Ima Idiot
Hesa Idiot
and Dr. EVILPERSON and the EVILSHIP

I can't stand naming Sims. Coming up with names is always one of the most difficult parts of gameplay for me. I usually end up naming my Sims after old civilization's deities, like Roman or Greek gods. I found this site (http://www.godchecker.com/) the other day and it's been awesome because it has so many names. Takes a lot of the effort out for me. :giggler:
I like to try and keep themes going though, i.e. if I start using Roman names then I keep naming sims in that family/household after Roman gods..

Hi. :) I absolutely adore more down-to-earth, sort of hippie, peaceful, calm names. For example: Montana, Storm, Saddle, Midnight, Stallion, Topaz, Citrine, etc. I love names that are out of the ordinary because of how pretty they sound, especially if you have the just right surnames. The surnames I've used before include but aren't limited to: Canter, Kirk, Demeter, Greene, Strille, Devlon, and Colton.

I've been skipping around through US social security name lists. I'll do the top ten for a year, skip a few years, and use those. I'm up to 1940. It's interesting to watch the names change through the years. I've also begun incorporating flowers and stones of the month and Biblical names. I will definitely use those godnames. I'm always looking for new names.

Cacophony? ;)

I once named a cat Musette, after having considered Minuet. I think both are great female names.

Then there's Sonata or Sonatina, and of course, Allegra. (eta: Ooops, I meant Allegro, for a male sim.)

Thanks guys! Okay it has to be one of these:

Psalmody (religious)
Hymnody (religious)
Rhapsody

I'm thinking of Rhapsody, because:
a) I don't think this family, the Do's, are going to be religious, and
b) It doesn't share the first letter with any other name I mentioned, and
c) I'm not that fond of names starting with a silent letter, like Psalmody.

I think I'm going to go with Rhapsody, though feel free to add any suggestions.

I'm in the process of editing a name mod (the one that Townies/NPCs pick their names from) to make them all really plain and "western". Mainly because if the game generates a sim with the palest skintone and an Asian looking face template and names them Fransua Ramirez, it looks a little odd... At least if the names are western, they can blend in easier and it's not like "where did they get a name like that from?".

I'll happily give my CAS sims ethnic names, because I can control what they look like, and their back story.

I used that for the father, but thank you!

Thank you! Patrick's son, I just chose Pancras, meaning 'all-powerful'. The only thing I hate about this name is that it sounds a bit like Pancreas.

Its for my Whiskerton neighborhood. There is a thread for it in the CFF section, can use some help. :)

And if you would change the name into Pancratius, or do you then still have the association with Pancreas?

Not sure, but there seems to be a much wider difference, but for now, I'll just stick with Pancras, later if I want to change the name, I'll just go into SimPE. I have lot of time before submitting the neighborhood. But anyways, thank you!

I'm pretty sure that's as far as the census figures are released to the general public, though it's not hard to find the "most popular baby names" for boys and girls for any time from the 19th C through last year.

Peni Griffin

Census data, yes, because that's data about individuals. The raw first name counts, however, are not confidential because they are separated from all personal data. You can use the SS online data base to sort most popular names in the US by year, state, gender, and decade, back to 1879; and the most popular combinations of twin names for the most recent year of compilation (currently 2011; inputting takes time!). Garrett/Gavin is #44 for male/male twins, BTW! Alas, Georgia/Garrett for female/male twins didn't make the running.

If any other countries have similar databases, I'd love to see links to them.

What are your favourite names that you tend to use a lot in your game? What are the names of your favourite families, and your legacy family? Do you have any cute themes that you use?

There was one time when I made a family called "The Lerner Family". The man's full name was Stu Dee Lerner, a play on the words "Study" and "Learner". He was an adult Knowledge Sim and moved into a humble, small house in Greendale (I think?), based on the Wisteria Lane template that I downloaded from Mod The Sims. I made him wear the black-and-white full body suit from the base game, because I figured that would make him more noticeable among the Sims community ('cuz seriously, no one ever uses that outfit -_- at that time to my knowledge). He met Ivy Copur (adult) and the other residents of Greendale too. (Actually, he was the only playable family; other people were only non-playables or townies.) As he lived in the house, I thought I could make him a small schoolhouse and he could be the schoolmaster. It got to the point when he adopted two girls, and then I changed my mind. He married Ivy Copur and started a family with her. She got pregnant, and that was the end of Part 1 of the story on the Official Exchange. Part 2 came, but it was not as applauded as Part 1. Basically, Ivy Copur gave birth to baby girl, whom I named "Ivanna Lerner", a play on the words "Ivy" and "I want to learn[er]". She became a Knowledge Sim, just like her daddy. You could tell that I had a whole family of Knowledge Sims at the time, and I didn't even know it!

I often name Brandi Broke's third son "Skip Broke" after the father.

When I replay the Pleasant family and help Mary-Sue and Daniel try for another baby, I like to make the baby a girl as a reminder of the first time I played the family. The girl is often named "Sunshine Pleasant", because she would be the light and shine of the family, helping to heal the family's old wounds.

For ethnic names, just google (for example) "japanese girls names" - and replace "japanese" with whatever ethnicity and "girls" with boys, if that's what you want. There will be plenty of sites - usually giving the names and their meanings. You can do the same for "last" names (though in much of Asia, the family name is first and personal name last, but that won't work in game terms.)

I like silly names. Like my car and cookie families, I also have a number of "frog" families; various green skins with names like Tad Pole & Soggy Sandybottom (& their 14 kids). And my Aliens all get "space" names - sometimes they sound like they COULD be real names: Leonid Ganymede, Orian Asention, Data Pryon. But also Quizxw419. For a farming/fishing community & looked up Scandinavian sorts of names. For my (for now) favorite Pleasantview (inspired by fact that Mary Sue LOOKS Asian) a large group of Chinese, Japanese, Hmong, etc . It was fun researching names and pictures and trying to create them. ODDLY there is NO skin that shows a truly Asian eye! It can't be created in body-shop. Well, I found one skin that at least did not have the painted lid-crease, but it's too poorly done.
