* No Custom Content apart from Maxis recolours, Maxis match and walls/flooring of your choice
* Be polite

Application Round Requirements:
Applications End Midnight Monday 5th November (GMT)

Bathroom: decorate a bathroom no bigger than 4x5 following the rules. Room can be any shape, diagonal walls/half walls allowed, no interior walls.

Closed for Judging

Round 2 - Cosy Living Room

Design a living room with a warm feel to it. It must have a fireplace and be a maximum of 8 square long by 6 squares wide, but
it can be any shape within those limits. Other than that it's up to you!
Bonus Points - bonus points are available this round if you do not use any recolours, Maxis Match, spawned items, bonus items, no pre-oder items, Life Stories items, no invisible recolours, no OSMPs, no flowers made at the flower bench, no downloaded walls/floors. Round 4 - Senior Bedroom
For this round you are designing a bedroom for Grandma and Grandpa Sim! They want it to be reasonably traditional, Grandma quite likes floral print or checks (and Grandpa likes whatever Grandma likes!), and comfortable. They would like a TV in the bedroom as they don't sleep as well as they used to and an en-suite bathroom (so they don't have to go too far in the middle of the night!), the bathroom must have a toilet, sink and shower (bath is optional).
Bedroom must contain one double or 2 single beds, a dresser, a mirror and at least 1 comfortable chair (plus the TV).
The maximum size of the room (including en-suite) is 12 squares by 8 squares, but it can be any size or shape within those limits.
Picture requirements: Bedroom up to 4, En-Suite up to 3, plus an overhead of both.

I have a small question. Would it be ok if I used Lost Maxis content in my room? :)

romyhorse
1st Nov 2007, 09:09 AM
The reason I'm allowing Maxis Match and recolours is because there is so little in the base game, it gives those who only own that or just one or two EPs more options, so I will allow Lost Maxis content as well on the same note. (If there is anything in your pictures I don't recognise I will PM you, as I don't have all the Stuff Packs.)

 Yay! We got our first 2 entries and first 2 judges! Keep them coming :D

Essa

Are Life Stories objects allowed?
Do you have an idea of the timeline? I don't know if this question makes sense? :(

This contest sounds great and I may give a try. :)

summer_wine
1st Nov 2007, 09:30 AM
romy horse i love the idea of your contest and i'm definitely thinking of joining.

question: since you're allowing object recolors, what about wallpaper and floors? do they need to be maxis only as well?

romyhorse
1st Nov 2007, 10:40 AM
Any bedding, walls and floors are allowed, after all they are just recolours. Same goes for pictures, any recolours of a Maxis mesh are allowed. I had been thinking about allowing Life Stories objects, so yes that's okay. If any one wants any links to LS or Maxis Match PM me :D

I am hoping to have 4 rounds after the applications so applications would run for a minimum of 5 days (depends how many people enter).

Those of you thinking about entering, would you prefer eliminations each round and a chance to win a star, or would you prefer no eliminations? PM me and let me know.

SilentPsycho
1st Nov 2007, 12:01 PM
Would you be able to use OMSPs, as they're not Maxis-made?

romyhorse
1st Nov 2007, 12:21 PM
Yes, I would allow OMSP's as you could use invisible recolours of Maxis tables, counters etc instead, but OMSP's just make it easier :)

Are we allowed to use IgnorantBliss's curtains that pull textures from bedding? I mean, if we only use Maxis bedding?

romyhorse
1st Nov 2007, 07:13 PM
Yes, that would be classified as Maxis Match, and as you can use any bedding recolours you could use any of the curtain recolours (Maxis didn't really provide us with much in the way of curtains!).

Looking ahead, there will be one round where there will be a bonus if you don't use any recolurs/Maxis Match etc.

Can I remind the contestants who have applied to state whether they want Base Game, Uni or Nightlife posters, thanks.

I haven't entered a design contest in a long time Romy. It's funny because I love designing rooms more than I do making sims for beauty contests LOL Can you tell me how many rounds there will be and will the picture requirements (2-4 pics including overhead) be the same each round? Just asking because i'd love to enter, but I don't want to over-burden myself.

romyhorse
2nd Nov 2007, 12:38 AM
I am planning 4 rounds and picture requirements will probably be the same each round (and once you've decorated the room you don't need to change it for every picture like you do beauty contests so 1 or 2 extra wouldn't make any difference). For each round there will be a "maximum" room size but you can make it as small as you want. I hope you find time to enter, people who do well in beauty contests are usually really good at decorating as they get plenty of practise making backgrounds!

how can I check the file size? and how can I decrease it??

ChihoSan

I check mine's size by right clicking the icon for the picture (Say on my desktop) and then check properties. And I use the Gimp so if I need to downsize mine, I just take it down from 100% quality compression, to like 98. It has a slider. And you can't tell a difference, really.

stylequeen... We have had the file size rule for a long time, but recently Delphy coded something special into the site to make it impossible for anyone to post an image with a file size larger than our image file size limit. You can either save your images as another file type (JPEG, GIF, etc), compress it, shrink it or link it. See the following quote for more information. And please, next time use the PM system for questions like this.

File Size: Images should not be larger than 175 kbs. This should be plenty even at maximum image size at a decent level of compression. Most any graphics program can save JPEGs at multiple levels of compression to fit the 175 kb file size limit. Photoshop's Save For Web feature is especially useful for this as it makes for very small file sizes with great smooth compression - but even if you don't have Photoshop, the free program GIMP will compress JPEGs at different levels and show you the file size. To see an image's file size, right-click on the image on your computer or in a browser window and choose Properties.

If you think there is a non-Maxis object please PM me rather than posting on the thread, I've PM'd a few people about their entries already. In the application round there are no eliminations so it doesn't really matter, but in future rounds you will be penalised if there are any non-Maxis items. If I spot anything I will PM you so you have a chance to change it before the round ends.

Thanks sawcarn I have BV but hadn't noticed that plant before! You don't need to change your entry since there are no eliminations (unless you really want to :D).

I suggested a contest like this a few weeks ago - little did I know how much of a challenge it was! I miss my clutter! Okay, for the record, I have all EP's...

I decided to do a modern bathroom with clean lines and a simple floorplan. I chose a white base and used red for contrast. I also used Independent Expressions windows (Maxis-match) by MaryLou and the wooden deck stairs (Numenor) recolour in white (by Nengi65) - I assume that it is allowed. If not please let me know and I will change it.

Those are the items that come with the Sims 2 Holiday Edition (Sims 2 plus Happy Holiday Stuff) so maybe it's slightly different (I couldn't find just the Happy Holiday Stuff Pack), I also noticed there was a large flower display from Celebration not shown in the link either (but it is in the preview screenshots).

There will be no eliminations in the Application Round, there will be in the following rounds so you will have a chance to win a star.

Yes, it can be any size or shape as long it is no bigger than 5x8.

Edit: In case anyone is unsure, by contemporary I mean in style at the moment, so that covers quite a range or styles.

Is round 1 the round where we gain points if no recolours etc are used? And does that include using only maxis wallpaper? Also does the kitchen have to be contemporary as i'm useless at knowing what style is what. I just put together what i think looks good.
What i mean is, if i place a dining table and chairs in the kitchen, how will i know if they are contemporary? I know i sound like a complete moron here.

hathompson there's no limit on entries so I look forward to seeing you.
starwyn Round 2 is the round with the bonus, and if you want the bonus you can't use anything other than what came with the game, so just Maxis wallpaper (it's up to you to decide whether the bonus points are worth it!).
Contemporary is what you would see if you went into a kitchen showroom. I chose that style because the country kitchen has got so many matching items that I didn't think it was fair on the people who don't have Seasons so I chose a style that would exclude the country kitchen.
summer_wine yes points will be deducted if any of the round rules are not followed.

Yes, as long as the overall look is up to date and not too country that's okay.

romy earilier you said contemrary was in style so i did a beahy tropical style kitchen which wouldnt really be in a show room will i have to change it

Same as above, contemporary is just what's in fashion at the moment and covers alot of styles, if it would look more at home in a beach hut than a normal house then you might get marked down.

This is a great challenge! I've never done a contest before, but this one really interested me because I don't really use Maxis stuff. I really enjoyed decorating it :D and I've also found out I'm so bad at taking snapshots :hmm:

Edit: Oh, I have all the EPs and SPs.

Yeah! Three more great entries :yippee: Thanks for entering Freelancer, mungomomo and TLAWBLIQUE360 great to have you on board :D. I saw you lurking Freelancer and wondered if you were considering joining. You are all going to have to stop making such great rooms, you are making it too hard for my judges!

I went for a bold yet classic design. Bright reds, bold black and crisp white complete this look. Sort of a contrast between a 1950's diner and a modern masterpeice :D

Thankyou! That was my second attempt. I removed every item from that room and redid the whole thing lol. We've both used very similar items but then it is maxis only so we are limited :)
I'm loving the kitchens so far more than i even liked the bathrooms which were also fantastic.
btw i love your dining area with the windows
I also love Essa's natural look. I would never have thought of doing those colours but they really do look beautiful
I haven't done a beach theme in any of my houses yet honeynutcows so it was really nice to see... although i think Romy did mention something about this round not being too 'beachy' either way, i'm not at all bothered by it. It looks good

We've got a quarter of the Round 1 entries in already! I've updated the first page and I'm away to get your prizes sent out. I just wanted to bring to your notice that I have changed the time the round ends from midnight GMT Thursday to 8am Friday GMT, so those of you in the US/Canada have until midnight Thursday PST to finish up. These time zones are complicated so I've added a countdown.

Countdown (http://timeanddate.com/counters/customcounter.html?month=11&day=9&year=2007&hour=8&min=0&sec=0&p0=0)

I just wanted to add the contestants will be cut to 20 after Round 1.

Round 1 - contemporary kitchen.
- I decided to go for a modern look with a asian feel to it and simple colours like red, black and white. Windows and cabinets are maxis match.

All I can say is I'm glad I'm not competing or judging, I'm just the moderator of the rules :D

Six new entries since I went to bed, they are all looking great. I'll update the front page later. Just under 2 days to go.
If you were competing I'm sure you would do great. You're like the queen of decorating contests.

All those new entries are just outstanding. :jaw:

May I ask how you guys are doing to extract items from the OFB flowers station? I can't figured that out. :(

All of these entries are beautiful. This is going to be so hard to judge. I haven't seen 1 entry I don't love.

Essa, there's a hack to make the crafted flowers buyable. Let me see if I can find it real quick. Ah, found it. It's by Lucas at AussieTopenders (http://www.aussietopenders-sims2.com/hackedobjects.htm)

The "lost content" arrangement that I and a few others used is by Numenor at MTS.

I wanted to add that these rooms are jaw-dropping! I'm simply astounded.

All you have to do is make your sim "make on" of which ever flower arrangement you want, and then select it off of the table. You can use the insimenator to get their badge level to gold.

I have updated my entry Here (http://forums.sims2community.com/showpost.php?p=1055978&postcount=140)
Because my room was originally outside the 5x8 perimeter. It is now fixed :)

The same with me. Will update mine tomorrow.

I have also updated my entry - click me! (http://forums.sims2community.com/showpost.php?p=1057023&postcount=171) Apparently we're all fabulous decorators but we can't count :loco: Some very stiff competition here, I love all the entries :D

Oh, I know of course none of us were cut due to our bathroom entries but we were judged on them at all? I do like to get any constructive criticism I can so I can improve so if any of the judges or anyone else for that matter had any comments I'd love to hear them, pm is fine so as not to clog up the thread with chatter :)

Ditto on the judges comments...it's always good to know how you're doing, wether or not it's good or bad.

If i don't make it to the next round i will still definitely be checking back to see all the wonderful entries. I'm loving this contest more and more. Everyone is so creative.

The coffee bag and Pet food box were spawned with the boolprop testing cheatsenabled cheat and the computer in the corner was placed on a low OMSP and made to look like a small TV (good for watching cooking shows or football games). The maxis match upper counters are by CTNutmegagr at Neighborhood99. The shelf is the trophy shelf that comes with Bon Voyage and the curtains are a recolour of the blue bathroom curtains. Ceiling is visible second floor walls coloured in white.

Round One

~Contemporary Kitchen~

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q190/faking_it_album/kitch2.jpg
This kitchen island is not only good for food preparation but also for entertaining. Guests can sit and chat with the cook.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q190/faking_it_album/kitch3.jpg
Lots of storage area and room for traffic makes this a good family kitchen.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q190/faking_it_album/kitch4-1.jpg
A small espresso nook helps the parents in gearing up for the day ahead. A TV set is always a good addition.

This alcove is a nice spot for kids to do their home work in while Mom cooks dinner.

I love checking in and seeing everyones gorgeous entries :) And Romy, i love the fruit pics. Particularly the base game ones

Summerwine-If you open your pics in photoshop or similar, you can 'save as' and a box will pop up where you can choose the quality of your pic. The better the quality the larger the file size.
It will show you down the bottom of the box how big the size is and you can adjust the quality before clicking 'ok'.....did this make sense? I had trouble understanding it to to begin with but it's very easy.
Also, if it seems you're losing too much of the quality adjust the sharpness and contrast of the pic a little before saving it :)

Only one person didn't get their entry in so 11 ( :!: ) will be leaving us this round.

Judging this round is on how well you interpreted the contemporary theme (within the limits of the game!). I am using a ranking system of scoring for fairness. I shall post Round 2 on the front page in case you want to start planning ahead.

Yes, I edited it earlier :). If you want the bonus, no flowers from the flower making station, only objects in buy/build mode. I'll add that to the instructions.

great round romy! how many bonus points will you get if you did an all maxis round?

I haven't entirely decided but it's will probably be 4 bonus points. Taking into account I'm using a ranking system for scoring you would raise your placing 4 places. There will be 8 people leaving at the end of Round 2 so if you can't live without your recolours you will need to be in the Top 8 to be sure of going through to the next round. I hope that makes sense!

This is reeeeeaaally hard!
It feels like I've been waiting and waiting for days... I don't have great hopes of getting past the round but the waiting is killing me anyway :)

I'm in a part of the globe where the day starts earlier than everywhere else (GMT+10, so I have a whole 10 hours to wait before the deadlines roll around even thought the "deadline time" has already passed for me). So this is especially hard because I think, hey, the time's up but then it's another 10 hours to go!

Okay, here are the comments and eliminations for Round 1:

Top 20 in no particular order

migamoo:
love that all the colors are tied in with that rug; Overall a really great room! It strikes me as a little cold, however, which I think could have been remedied with more art on the walls or plants; I really like the light setting and the red accents

Chihosan:
fantastic! lovely pictures; I love the color scheme you went with, especially the black accents. You use of space is really good, too; Well organized area with a lot of space for movement

Daisie:
neat room shape. Love that table; You certainly built a room shape that's difficult to decorate, but I think you pulled it off. I love all the windows, and your choice of wall color & curtains; you are really good in putting objects in small places, I like the displacement

Cinamun:
fruit pictures are pretty. collage is cool; I like what you went for with this room, but it's not quite what I had in mind for a contemporary kitchen. I really like how you used one of the OFB shelf units to place the microwave on; great thinking; full of colours, very original!

photo_me2004:
love the green. pictures are cool too; I really like this room, but I wish you didn't place all the furniture around the perimeter of the room. A counter island or penninsula would have been a great touch

starwyn:
neat! love the walls; I like your use of space, especially the counter island. I think the large red tiles on the walls come off as cold, however; I really like wall and floor and the strange shape counters!

himawara:
Pretty! love that you used the bar; I love how you separated the kitchen area with the blue tile; Extremely soft colour scheme

pompom:
it's blue!; I love how the wood tones of the counter top and floor mirror each other, as well as how the blue walls make the wood "pop." I would have liked to have seen more counter space, perhaps with an island or penninsula, but overall you've done well

Essa:
Dining area is gorgeous. different color chairs are a nice touch; I really love the color scheme you went with, as well as the warmth the wall paper adds; I simply love this room, exspecially the dining area with those wonderful choosen pics!

sawcarn:
very pretty. Love the accent wall; I love the room shape you went with, as well as your use of space. The dark floors and counter tops are great; perfect colour scheme, perfect choice of details, perfect feeling!

summer_wine:
very bright and cheery! great placement of the stove; This is a really nice contemporary kitchen, with great use of space. Good job. I like all the natural materials used, and the warm colors

eedgan:
very light and airy lol love that there is food out... you can see the pool!; Despite all the white, this room doesn't come off as cold; good job. I love the flower boxes on the floor

brilliantcat:
cool stove thingy. llama thing seems out of place but overall good job; I love the dining area! I'm not a fan of the green walls; they give the room a cold industrial feel; very original room plan

Babbelsim:
circle windows are cool; I love the shape of this room, and your placement of furniture. I would have liked to have seen something a little more interesting on the walls; Like the open lines of the room with the white and full of light feeling

SharnaPax:
beautiful. love the curtains. very contemporary feel; I find this room overwhelming with it's aqua-ness. Less is more! I do like the use of space, and your choices of furniture, though; Simply love you colour scheme and the choice of wall and floor, especially in the dining area

sawcat@earthlink,net:
I like the colors... cool chairs; really nice, overall. I would have liked to have seen more counterspace; an almost futuristic approach, with elements of pop style

magnoliae:
bricks make me think rustic/urban. door is very cool. like the different color chairs; I love all the natural materials in this kitchen, especially the slate floor. A wonderful, contemporary kitchen

mungomomo: pretty cabinets and big TV... Yay!; I like the layout you created. I would have liked the counters more in a natural wood tone, though; I really like the point where you have set the door

didgerdoni:
beautiful love the centerpiece; I love the layout of this kitchen, and the blue/purple accents. The wood & counter tops give it a nice contemporary feel; It reminds me of "Home alone" kitchen :D

goodnightpeter:
love the pictures and the minimal use of red (lobsters were a great touch); I like the layout, but I'm not feeling your choice of wall treatment; it gives the whole room a cold feeling; There's a lot of light and a general feeling of clean and airy spaces

The 11 that will be leaving are, in no particular order

SwitchfootKatie:
seems kinda emtpy; I would have liked to have seen better use of space; the room looks a little empty. Perhaps with a counter island or penninsula, as well as some artwork on the walls and light fixtures, that could be fixed; I like very much all the kitchen accessories you have put!

honeynutcows:
I like the trees!; This is a wonderful room, but it's just not contemporary. I love the bar area you created, as well as your choice of wall paint; The room is really full of light, it gives me a sense of joy!

SilentPsycho:
love the pointy plant but maybe better placement?; The dining area is really nice, but I'm a little underwhelmed with the kitchen area; Love the patio area with big windows

joshuajsmith3000:
very minimalist; Don't forget that furniture does not have to only go around the perimeter of a room! Lighting is really important, too

crocobaura:
love where you put the phone; I wish you had given up some upper cabinets in favor of more windows. I can't tell what's on the wall opposite the counters & cabinets, but I would have liked to have seen more artwork & plants; A very big room with a high attention on details

Bettebob:
brick makes me think urban. love the floor; I like the idea of brick on the walls, but not the brick you chose, with the metal trim at the top. The end table next to the fridge looks a little out of place, but I have to say I appreciate how you went for a smaller kitchen than most of the other contestants

paigeyt:
is there a window to the kids room? Love the colors. bery warm and inviting; This is a nice, warm kitchen. I like all the warm wood tones, but I would have liked to have seen some window treatments; this room has a sort of double face: "empty" in the kitchen area, overfilled in the dining area. I think it is an interesting feature

mumof5ferals:
pretty. I like all the different colors; You've decorated a nice room, but it's not what I would consider contemporary. I like the counter penninsula, and the intimate dining area; A sort of USA coffeteria in the '50, very original

Engram:
love that the floor matches the backsplash; I'm a little confused by the green/red/pink color scheme! Contemporary kitchens make use of natural materials and colors, so your colors are quite right; simply love your dining room choices, that chair+table set is fantastic

Freelancer:
very different/dark. I like it! nice shape; This room looks like it begins in the 1980s! I would have liked to have seen much more counterspace, artwork, and plants

TLAWBLIQUE360:
love it. bright and AAAA; I like the shape of the room and the placement of furniture. I'm a little overwhelmed by the green. It strikes me as more of a country styled kitchen than a contemporary one; It reminds me more country style than contemporary...

I'm sorry to see you go...

I made it  YAY! Congrats all who did and sorry to see the others eliminated :( I liked so many of the entries, I don't envy the judges. Time to get to work on the living room, this is going to be tough (au revoir my beloved OMSPs)!

Thanks for the fun, guys! Congrats to everyone to made it. I'll keep watching the next rounds. :)

For whoever couldn't identify the posters on the opposite wall from the counters, they are the pet posters that came with Pets. No serious or expensive artwork in the kitchen where I come from.
