I am trying to recolour the maxis openme window with clear glass
I've managed to do this but a whole new window icon is created rather than just a clear glass option icon. another icon appears in the glass options but it is identical to the leaded glass one
can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong

We could guess, but if you post your recolor package, we could tell you for sure.
My guess is that you tried to do this as a clone (since you say there is an entirely new icon) rather than as a recolor. This (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=102356) is a good recolor tutorial. Alternately, you might try this one by Moune (http://mounes-neighbourhood.110mb.com/Tutorials.html). Both are very good. There are many others on the web. They all say pretty much the same thing -- just in a different way.

You may also want to take a look at this http://www.modthesims2.com/d/327405 ("OpenMe door and windows without the crosswork") if you need something to compare. But I agree with bluetexasbonnie -- sounds like you're making a clone, rather than a recolour.

Seems like you recoloured both subsets instead of just one. The tutorial in the first link blueteasbonnie posted explains how to select the right subsets.
