Sim 3 Relationships

I have only been playing for a few hours but I am having such a hard time getting my sim to make friends/ romance... it doesn't seem like I have enough time.... I think that maybe I have to break down and use the cheats. I had one guy lined up as a potential romance but now he is an elder (with the story progression)
A few things:
Can the sims be unfaithful to their partners in sims 3?
What is the best way to meet people ?

I guess in Sim2 i relied so much on cheats and the matchmaker gypsy... I miss that old gypsy lady...

Have you tried extending the lifespan of your sims?

If you go into the options menu, under one of the sub-menus there's an option to lengthen or shorten the lifespan of your sims - I think the maximum lifespan is 399 days.

I've found that my child Sims make friends a lot faster than the grown-ups.
