This is information I found in the forum at Moreawesomethanyou.com.
This patch is specifically aimed at making the base game work with the World Adventures expansion pack.
If you do not intend to install the EP at this time (or ever), and you have already updated, you will need to uninstall TS3, reinstall the base game and do NOT update beyond the 1.4.6 update. This latest patch will not work :!: with the base game only. The good news is you can then continue to use the original AwesomeMod and any other mods you were using before.
If you are installing the WA EP, but it is not yet in place (mine is still on its way here :turtle: ) and you've installed the update - you can either wait until the EP is also installed to play, or you, too, will have to uninstall, reinstall and not update beyond 1.4.6. The patch will not work properly with only the base game. People have reported such oddities as most of a Sim families garden plants just disappearing, lots that turn blue and can no longer be selected, frozen Sims, not being able to save the game (some can only "save as") and of course the classic :wtf: crash to desktop.
If you have the base game and EP installed, you will need the patch for the game to work correctly. Do NOT :alarm: install the AwesomeMod, as it is incompatible. JPescado is already working on a new version, but it will take some time, as he has to start from scratch to cover all the changes.
As for other mods, check EA's list of fixes. If the mod addresses any of the same behaviours/bugs, it's probably best to leave them out until/unless they are updated. For example, I had a mod that addressed toddler traits and found that ALL my traits had disappeared from Create-a-Sim!
So, here's hoping that this advisory post helps some of you avoid the worst problems we're bound to be facing in the next few weeks. Happy simming!

It's not entirely true that the patch "will not work with just the basegame". It was poorly coded and apparently not tested, and thus has many issues, yes. However, this isn't because it's a WA-only patch - it's because EA suck at pre-release testing. No doubt they''ll release a hotfix for some of these issues shortly.

The latest patch does work with the base game only. I've just partitioned my hard disk so that I can convert my Vista PC into a dual boot Vista and Windows 7 PC, and installed a fresh new copy of TS3 on the Windows 7 partition, with no custom content, savegames or anything else brought over from the Vista TS3 installation - just fresh out of the box. I installed the new patch into the new Win7 TS3 installation, and it worked fine and so far (touch wood) I haven't had any problems with the gameplay. (I then copied over all my cc, mods and savegames to the new TS3 installation, and they seem to work fine too, SO FAR - the only exception being the Awesomemod, which I sorely miss!)

I have been looking ALL OVER for an answer to this problem. My sims would just freeze and I wouldn't be able to do anything with them. It basically rendered the game unplayable. x_x Anyway, now I've backed things up and I'm un-installing and re-installing. Thanks for this info, I'm relieved I'm not the only one.

My opinion? They should damn-well TELL you that you need the new EP for this patch. ¬_¬

You don't. The patch is just broken. As is the EP to a large extent.

In order to better solve your problem, please go through the following as listed below:

Sims 3 - Blue/Black Missing Lots
This is a known issue with World Adventures and the 1.6 patch.

Currently the only workaround is to only play new towns - towns that didn't exist before you patched or installed WA. Otherwise we just have to wait for EA to fix it.

If you are desperate to play your old saves, then you may be able to do so by backing up all files in My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Saves that end in ".legacy" (such as "riverview.sims3.legacy") - copy them to your desktop - then uninstalling and reinstalling Sims 3 completely. Do not patch to 1.6, and do not install WA. Copy the .legacy files back into Saves, and remove .legacy from the name. Hopefully the towns will then be playable.

On occasion you might be asked to do a long FAQ - please make sure you do all the steps and don't just skip over them. You'll often find that these long FAQs have all the details you need. If nothing in the above FAQs fixes your problem you may post again detailing exactly which you have done and which steps failed.

Just in case this helps anyone, after having a complete nightmare with patch 1.6, I completely uninstalled S3 (including cleaning up reg keys, rogue folders etc) and then reinstalled. I patched to 1.6 via Launcher, then I went to my pre-first-attempt-at-patch-1.6 back-up of the MyDocs stuff and copied over a single old savegame as a guinea pig.

Launched shiny, patched new install, loaded up old savegame and did the "Save As...", then quit game and removed the original savegame from MyDocs, leaving me with the same old game in the new foldered-format. Re-launched game and attempted to break same. Couldn't.

Repeated process with several other pre-patch savegames with same positive outcome. At least for me, it seems to work if you consider the first "Save As..." simply as a conversion of the old savegame format to the new, then delete old format of save utterly.

Only issue I am having at the moment is a stupid "Can't Intersect..." message when trying to place cars onto car parking spaces. No more error 16s or other horrors tho.

This is just with base game. I hope to be installing WA tomorrow and who knows what joys await me then.

Anyways, maybe the above will help someone.
