Whenever I want to use the pool or the basement tool on a downloaded lot my game crashes. Weirdly enough, it only happens on lots that come with a pool or a basement. I can use the pool tool and the basement tool on downloaded lots that don't already have a pool or a basement.
I tried all the steps in the game crashing thread but it didn't help. So I decided to reinstall my game. I now have WA patched up to 2.3 with only 3 custom lots installed, no hacks and no CC and it doesn't work either.
I hope somebody can help me, because I'm going crazy.

Do you mean while in Live mode?
Maybe hardware related, then..unless it crash on a lot you built yourself, as well? Do others who have downloaded these lots encounter the same problem?

Or Build mode?
I have read some players have used the workaround of going into "Buy" mode before "Live" mode.

Build -> Live : Crash!
Build -> Buy -> Live : not crash.

But, I think it is the settings somewhere - either in options that you could try tweaking down or your hardware (CPU+GPU) combo that is having issues rendering the basement stuff correctly.

I don't even get as far as live mode. The game crashes as soon as I either click on the basement or the pool tool.

It doesn't happen on premade lots nor on lots I make myself. I can also use basement and pool tool on downloaded lots that don't have a pool or basement. It's just downloaded lots with a pool or a basement that give me trouble.

I tried it with all the settings on low and it didn't work either.

I also don't think it's my computer, I have an Intel Core2Quad CPU with 2.83GHz (4CPUs) and an ATI Radeon 4850, unless there's something wrong with the components.

Could it be that I patched the game incorrectly? I installed the base game, patched it all the way and then installed WA and had to patch again. Might that cause the problems?

Here's a really dirty workaround: Place the lot, use the hammer tool to destroy the pool/basement. Save it to your lots, bulldoze, and place the poolless and basementless one. It works fine, even after readding the pool, saving, bulldozing and replacing it.

This does not fix your game. It'll just let you play the game.

thanks tapsyhapsy, it worked, you're the best!!! It might not fix the game but at least now I can start playing my family without having to build a huge mansion myself. Thanks so much!!

You're welcome, though I'll have to add an extra note. There are some lots that this does not fix, like the Shirk house. Though that house also has plants on the first basement floor, also, the basement floor is not level. Weird stuff.
