View Full Version : How much is too much?

Is 10 gigs & 10,000 files too much custom content? I have 4 gigs of RAM so I'm guessing I'm at the limit of what Windows can use for RAM, but if getting more RAM would help I'd do that too.
As it is right now the game has superb lag and locks up frequently.

Have you read this guide? http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Package_File_Lag, it may help.

The 4GB you have is quite OK if the only thing 3D-wise you do is play Sims.
32-bit Windows will only recognize 3GB.
If you have a 64-bit OS, then an upgrade is worth the while, but the game is capped to work at 2GB anyway. The other 2GB for Windows to run stuff in the background should be good enough.
Plus, upgrading RAM is not as simple as plugging in new sticks next to their brethren, they sometimes do not play nice with each other :p, as most motherboards function on pairs, not quads, although there are usually 4 RAM slots.
There are already 10GBs of content available? jeez..I need to go out on downloading sprees more... :giggler:
TS3 has made me cautious and picky CC-wise.

If you have to many package files clogging slowing down your game, Download and install s3pe (http://sourceforge.net/projects/sims3tools/files/s3pe). This nifty program lets you combine up to about 400 packages into a single package, which really helps! Less packages, less lagg.
Open s3pe and press File-->New
Next press Resource-->Import-->(Expiramental) as .dbc
When the folder with the packages you want is open, press Ctrl+A to select all the files.
It can take a few seconds or a few minutes, depending on the number of files, and the size on those files.
When its done, press File-->Save as to give it the name you want, and to save it where you want it to go.
Once saved, press File-->Close to close out, and start over.

There is a tool out there to make TS3 (and other .exe) large adress aware. It works well on systems with 4 gig plus RAM. I foget where it is and am a bit rushed ATM or I'd dig it up for you. maybe someone else has the link for it.

Assuming DarkAmaranth is referring to CFF Explorer, check out this thread (http://linna.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=375907). Link for getting the app included in the first post along with a quick tutorial.

I tried that program and it kept giving me errors.
"Unhandled exception has occured in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.
Expected magic tag "DBPF". Found 'DBPP'. "
I got it to work twice starting from the bottom and only doing some files. The second time though it looked like the files that it combined into one file were still there.

That can happen with a single bad file. Try moving them in smaller sections to narrow down which file is causing the problems.
