Farming Challenge

Congratulations, your grandparents have decided to move to Florida and leave you a wonderful piece of property! The catch, in their old age they didn’t exactly keep up with it.

It’s now your job to fix up the barn into a more stylish, habitable abode while making a living off the land.

To begin:
Download the house that is included here.
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/Girl4Sims2/Screenshot-61.jpg
~Create a family consisting of a man and his wife (young adult only) and their son (make him a child or a teen).
~You can set the life span to whatever you like.
~Move the family into that house and reduce family funds to 100 simoleons.
~Delete the school in the neighborhood. Due to being stuck in the middle of no where, there is no school for the children. (I suggest creating a new neighborhood for this unless you want all the other children in the neighborhood to be kicked out of school). If you play this continuously and make it to where the original son has a child you may choose to add the school back into play.
~The original teenge son must marry and have his first SON for you the challenge to be complete.
*Or if you like it really challenging you can make this last point the finish line and restart if you don't complete the other requirements in time!

Rules for gameplay:
~No member of the family may have a career / part time job. The only exception to this rule is that when the original son’s children grow up with schooling, then when they turn into young adults they may have a job. Also, any other the children the original parents have when they move out they may get a job if they are beyond your control. If the children stay to help with the farm, they may not have jobs.
~The only way to make money is to sell vegetables/fruits and fish at the market. You may paint for fun, but you may not sell the portraits, only hang them.
~You must fill in the garden after you gain in your gardening skill. Filling in the garden consists of filling the sunken part of the yard in an orderly fashion of fruits and veggies. And you may not delete any of the existing plants. Nor move them, if they die that is another story.
~You may not plant unnatural things.
~You must have at least one more child of the opposite sex. So in other words, a girl. You must be pregnant before the son ages to a young adult.
~You must create a habitable home by the end of the original male adult’s life. A habitable home includes 1 kitchen, one living area, at least 3 bedrooms, and at least 2 bathrooms.

Rules for redecoration:
~You may not delete or remodel any outside existing walls. Your grandfather built that farmhouse with his bare hands; you may not delete any existing walls nor change the paneling / stone on the foundation or red barn walls. You MAY however add on a third story following the same barn paneling design. And you may change the roof if you choose.
~You may not fill in the pond or get rid of any indentions or hills.
~There are some items you may not sell or get rid of. There were certain items your grandmother made you swear you would keep in the family and on the property. These items are the following.

The windmill. Your grandfather built it on the property 30 years ago and there it must stay in its exact place.
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/Girl4Sims2/Screenshot-64.jpg

Dining room chairs. The table doesn't have to stay but the chairs have to be in the house. They may be reupholstered.
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/Girl4Sims2/Screenshot-65.jpg

The sofa and end table. They may be moved, but colors may not be changed.
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/Girl4Sims2/Screenshot-66.jpg

The sink, tub, and toiletry holder must remain in the house.
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/Girl4Sims2/Screenshot-69.jpg

The carpet, your grandmother handmade that carpet. No you may not change the lovely colors.
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/Girl4Sims2/Screenshot-68.jpg

The door, your grandfather worked hard on that door. It must remain in its place with the same colors for the remainder of the challenge.

Have fun and please post pictures!

Good challenge. But I'm already working on my Klepto King challenge and two legacies. Wait for me to finish my legacy first. But pretty nice, yeah.

Hi,
This challenge look interesting, but I don't understand the end.. The challenge ends when the son marries and has his first SON (not daughter).
If I understand good, when the first son, we created with the family child or teen, marries and has his first son, the challenge is finish.. but if this is, this challenge will be short.

Exemple :We create a teen, after a few days, the teen come young adult, can be married, and if his first baby is a son, the challenge is finish :( ...or maybe I don't understand good the rules .

Hey I'm really glad people are taking interest in this :D

Ok to answer some questions

Nene-

I'm going to leave this one semi up to you. You should complete the already existing rows and columns with similar spacing -fill in the obvious gaps- but they don't have to be the same vegetable all the way across (plant until you can't go any farther due to running into another type of plant going in a opposing direction).
This should create a mix match of rows and columns. You want to leave enough space between rows so your sims can walk.

If you look at the regular size grid as a "box" then try to fill parallel sides of the box with plants and leave the other sides untouched so sims can walk up and down the isles.

Please let me know if I just made it more confusing

You were correct in understanding it is the original teen's son.

Depending on how relaxed or action packed you want the challenge to be it can be taken different ways.

If you want to really super challenge yourself then you can push your sims to finish before he has a child. If you don't reach it then you could "fail" and try again.

Or

If you just want to have fun with it and keep play going you can look at it as a guidline that to complete the challenge you must have a son eventually.

I think i'll change that in the original post to make it more understandable that it is only a guidline if you don't want to race through it.

Some players really like a definite set point of when the challenge is over. I prefer to just have fun with them myself.

Which ever way you chose to play I hope you have fun!

Thanks you very much Petalofthenight for your answer :) Sure I'll play your challenge, and you're right, when I'll finish the challenge I'll continue it, with the same family and the same rules, and only the son's children, generation to generation, will be authorize to continue to live in the barn. It's important that, the barn, the garden and the land stay in very good condition for long time..... in memories of the oldies.

So getting started with this! One question - Does it have to be a man and his wife or could it be a man and his husband? Or would that be breaking the rules? :p

edit: crap, just saw the part about getting preggo with a girl. Adopting/male pregnancy mods is out of the question, no?

You can adopt but the male heir has to be blood related. If your computer can handle the mod then go ahead and use that. But you must go through some pregnancy.

I just noticed the tricky mismatched floor patterns - sneaky. That means eventually I actually have to replace the floor panels and fence panels, can't just color them. And the garden is huge! It's fun though. I am currently desperately fishing/planting so I can afford a crib because I (not smartly) got my woman preggers on the second day. So my family now has $300 and a baby on the way. Oy.

Another question :) Sorry I'm being a pain in the rear, when you say we cannot get rid of any hills or dents that are already there, could we add onto the hill that is already there. Say add a baby staircase on the side so the next bit is a bit lower, almost like a two tier hill :) It's just so that hill doesn't stick out like a sore thumb :) I'm trying to find a way around your rules and this is the only way i could think of :D xx

I think I'm really going to like this challenge! I've started my family, and I made the boy a child instead of a teen. I'm not sure if that will make things more difficult or easier in the long run.

Oh and I'm also using a mod that makes it so there's no free food when you move in, and recipes require 3+ ingredients. There are also custom ingredients (like spaghetti, or yogurt). I figured this would be okay since it doesn't give me any advantages.

EDIT: I lied, I'm not. I had forgotten that I wasn't using it for a reason lol :giggler:

Couple quick questions that I only just thought of - My sim found a money seed while he was fishing. When my other sim is high enough, can she plant it? Also, can I sell the stuff my sim finds while fishing? (i.e. a gnome, or bubble bath, etc.) Also, for those of us with WA, can we travel?

Travelling is fine. I don't have WA but i'm not sure if it will risk the health of the plants or not. That's up to you, but you may have to dispose of dead plants. But I'm not sure b/c I don't have WA. So go ahead and travel if you want.

And yes, anything you obtain through fishing or gardening you can sell including bubble baths and gnomes.

~You may not plant unnatural things.

Sorry, you can't plant that money seed. You could sell it since it is technically something you got from fishing or hang on to it and plant it once the challenge is "finished" and you play continuously.

Thanks for the pics, can't wait for more!

Thanks! And when a sim goes on vacation, time at home just stops. Just to let people know :P

More pics:

So their very first night in the new house, I decided to let the happy couple consummate their marriage. Y'know, since they had just gotten together (in my eyes, anyway). Well lo and behold, Jensen goes and gets Jessica pregnant, thanks to a broken condom!

Fortunately for them, their little girl is a cutie. Meet Jannah Ackles!

Jayson was taken with her since the day she was born. He's such a good big brother!

Jessica's latest (and hopefully last) pregnancy. She wanted another little girl, and Jannah was all too happy about the thought of a sister. What girl wouldn't, with three brothers? This was the only intended pregnancy.

This is just what I needed. I've downloaded a couple of new worlds and needed something to do with my sims while the place populates. Since the theme is that we're in the middle of nowhere this is perfect. BTW do we seriously have to keep the big hill and staircase in the middle of the farm?? I guess I understand the handicap it serves but it will be mighty difficult to make it look pretty.

Ok I understand that many of you loath the idea of that hill. LOL. So you may lower it, but it must remain elevated for the trees and so your sims have to climb steps to make it up there.

This challenge looks like a lot of hard work was put into it. (It also looks like a lot of fun, too!) Kudos & thanks, PetaloftheNight! I'm placing my Morris household onto the lot. I'll upload some pictures once I've actually started playing. LOL. -has yet to actually start-

edit: I started my family off. My sim couple ended up being adorable - I'm happy because sometimes I don't like the sims I try to whip up for challenges... oh! This lot is such a beauty to play in! That being said I snapped a quick 'awww' moment of my kiddo, Jerome who will eventually be running the farmhouse.

This is probably a really stupid question, but this is the first thing for the Sims 3 I've downloaded, and I've installed it fine, but the problem is that I can't find it in my game. Where does it turn up? Do you have to start a new game or something? Thanks.

This has been my favorite challenge yet! I don't know how to upload pictures since I'm new to actually posting. (Long-time lurker!) But, Johnson & Rebecca Farmer moved onto his grandparents land with big hopes. Johnson loved the land & hoped he could turn it around and get rich off of it. Rebecca didn't care where they were as long as they were surrounded by family. They were a traditional sort of family - Johnson worked the land, paid the bills & took the produce to market & Rebecca cleaned and cooked. They had a young son, Dell, who spent most of his time playing, fishing and occasionally helping around the house. When they finally seemed to get the hang for farming, they decided it was time to try to have kids. Johnson would love some help around the farm. Soon they had 5 babies - and all of them girls. Dell knew it was time for him to grow up when his father sent him to town to sell the produce. At first Dell thought he wouldn't be able to because he was too young, but miraculously he seemed to hit the age where he could shoulder that type of responsibility. From then on, Dell would help with the farm before and after school, then he would do his homework and help out with the 5 crying, squirming babies that needed more love, affection & care than 2 adults and a teen could POSSIBLY give them. (By the way, the poor family only had 2 rickety old cribs to split between the 5 infants. One time when Dad came home from the market, he brought an old, used teddy bear for them to play with & another time he found a toy table at a garage sale on the way home. Finally, with more of his plants being perfect and sought after - he was able to make more money at market - so things are looking up for the family financially. They don't have to pinch pennies so much!)

Now all the babies are growing up and turning into young ladies. How will the family continue to cope with so many in such a small household? Will Johnson and Rebecca refind the love they had for each other before all their responsibilities kept them apart. When Dell grows into a man, will his lifetime wish be to stay on the farm or get a job in the city?
