Sorry if this is the wrong section :/

I decided to get the sims 1 complete collection and fell in love with it after 2 minutes of playing (So much memories!!). Anyways, Im wondering if anyone else still plays and if theres any sites that still offers sims 1 downloads for free (especially food).

Also share some of your most memorable Sims 1 events :D

lazzybum, how much was the complete collection and where did you get it?

I remember that the Sims 1 was a struggle, that something as trivial as an appliance breaking could ruin the entire day. Job positions had strict friends requirements, forcing your sim to schmooze and sleep around. There were no advantages to having one job over another and so the best job was the one that paid the most. Children did not grow up to be adults and stayed useless the entire game. The humor was wacky. And it was very easy to make custom skins of anyone.

I reinstalled it recently and had a lot of fun playing it, especially magic town. I'm missing aging and real families there but found a lot of things, that I'd love to have for TS2 (sorry, my favourite, I'm not in love with TS3).

Here are some more sites with food:
Inés' Sim Bakery (http://www.chasque.apc.org/dana/)

I never stopped playing Sims 1, even after I got Sims 2 and 3...I rotate which game I play, depending on what mood I'm in. Lately I've been playing Sims 1 alot. Even after all of these years of playing, I still love El Bandito (the raccoon that raids the sims' trash at night) and Claire the bear and how crazy and campy everything is. Today my sim family is throwing a wild costume party...there goes the neighborhood! There actually *is* a way to get kids to become adults in Sims 1...it's a magic charm in the Makin' Magic EP that the kids can do on themselves to grow up.

If you're looking for CC for Sims 1, just get on your browser's search engine and type "Sims 1 downloads" or "Sims 1 Custom Content". Many of them are still up. You might be surprised at what you find.

Yep :) Reinstalled it on my laptop to play while on holiday and I'm so enjoying it! So many memories. It's much "harder" to do things as well like get promoted.

I was so surprised with all the things I had forgotten. Like the chem table which was awesome. It's funny because I installed it thinking that gameplay would be a bit limited but I'm actually amazed at all the different activities available for the sims.

they can do that? i never knew that.. now that is going to make the game more fun thanks! :lovestruc
but wasn't there some sort of mod that made child sims teen sims, but ever since 2 and 3 that page is mostly gone by now.
I love sims 1 more than 2..

I'm kind of intrigued by this discussion. One of the things that I think everyone agrees was awful about TS1 was the friend requirements for work. I think I recall having to maintain SEVENTEEN friends to become Mayor. I guess it was challenging though!

Even without mods you could simulate aging by using that spell in Makin' Magic to age your kids into adults, then kill off your adults and continue the cycle.

I remember I really wanted to play the Sims 1 not too long ago but couldn't find my discs. I eventually found them after I moved but didn't feel like playing it anymore :P I didn't have many EPs though. So yeah I haven't played it for years :/

I tried to play last summer, but even thou it was fun, many many things bugged me. Like how small everything is, how they always ate the same food, how they walked, having the same head all the time, but mostly, it was how small everything was. It's still an awesome game, and I did find from somewhere a hacked cake to grow kids up, and I made Cassandra into an adult.

The limited 4 camera angles is a bit annoying and the fact that you can't zoom in so far

Aroundthesims (http://www.aroundthesims.com/objects/food_00.html) has a large variety of foods and drinks and lots of other things. I still play Sims 1 ocassionally, the only problem is I can't play it without the moodbosters from aroundthesims. I'm a really lousy player. :giggler:

Yes!

I love The Sims 1 so much. It is way harder than the other two, though. Time goes by so fast.. and the sims always seem so angry, lol. The only thing that truly annoys me is the four camera angles; I can still be content other than that. I remember having so much mods though.. right before TS2 made it to Pets.

lazzybum

I'd have to agree that the friends for work is a killer, the same foods, and the weird 4 angle camera are some of the things I dont like. But I still love sims 1, since you dont really have to worry about aging, theres TONS of things to do. Oh and now that sims 1 is on a newer computer, it loads epically fast xD.

My favorite memory is when I threw a massive party (called like 3-4) times so theres around 40 people? I think i also built like 10 bathroom stalls. And i had cages, cakes with entertainers, and made every wear costumes. It was so fun to watch, and Drew Carey came over but his limousine was bugged, so he was walking around in my sims bedroom while they sleep because he couldnt leave :[ Creepy Mr Carey!

lazzybum, how much was the complete collection and where did you get it?

I bought on ebay for 36$ :]

Ive

I remember the first time Drew Carey came over! His TV show was on around the time (here in Norway) so we thought it was extremely cool.

best thing with the parties was that you could have everyone there change into a themed set of clothes

Thanks lazzybum! Never had the pleasure of playing Makin Magic or Superstar.

I remember looking on in astonishment as my sim took his date to a restaurant. The waiter took the order, took it to the cook who cooked the meal, and the waiter brought us the food. Afterwards, the date went to flirting and cuddling in the seat section. But that was all the magic of Maxis. Now in TS3 we have EA rabbit holes to unburden us from seeing a working environment with real mechanics.

the only thing I love about TS1 is makin' magic, better looking sims, better looking furnitures, and better BGM, but all in all, the gameplay was too simple

the best Marilyn Monroe sim from every sims game ever created was by brandon at TSR, it's free + he created lots of clothing for her(the best marilyn is the one that came with the clothing he first uploaded)

I've tried going back a few times just like I've tried going back to N64 games and playstation but I can't because of the horrible graphic quality.

lazzybum
18th Aug 2010, 07:57 AM
I actually like Sims 1 2D graphics. Well, the sims and the grass could have been better, but the furniture and stuff looks crisp and nice. I also notice badly custom meshed objects are easier to spot in 3D than 2D, I guess it blends in a bit more for 2D. And maybe its just me, but for some reason 2D pixelated foods look yummy xD

18th Aug 2010, 10:27 AM
I bought the complete collection too a few months back. I never actually owned it because we didn't have a computer capable of running it, but I used to play it a LOT at my friend's house.

The first thing that struck me was how hard it is to maintain your sims needs! It seems that's all I spend my time doing. It's so difficult to get anything done. I've been spoilt by TS2 and TS3. It definitely made me feel nostalgic.

Ive
18th Aug 2010, 10:38 AM
The furniture looks better in TS1, I agree! Because like you say, custom objects in TS2/TS3 are harder to get to blend in. I'm finding it annoying though that I cant place more than 1 item on the benches and also getting used to 1 tile = extremely bad.

I still play Sims 1 from time to time. I got complete collection last Summer and have actually played it a fair amount since then. I still download stuff for it too. Shame it looks like they took the website down though, there were apparently still people uploading to the exchange there. I'm glad I got all the official downloads from there last year.

As for a SC5, we may see one, EA did register SimCity5.com back in June. (http://www.simprograms.com/rumor-is-simcity-5-on-the-horizon/)

You plop down buildings and then can do special actions with certain ones. You have to have enough jobs for everyone in town, or people get pissed off. You have to have enough venues or people get pissed off. There was no real city management system like in Sim City 4. Oh, you also had to keep your carbon footprint down or the game would nag you over and over and over about it.

The Sims™ 3 World Adventures announced.

If they are going to redirect it, they should atleast update what they direct to, lol.

Hope there is somewhere new where EA is still going to offer those TS1 items. Afterall they still sell, so only makes sense to still offer it.

Simcredible Designs (downloads are on yahoo group): http://simcredibledesigns.com/index2.html

Sim Gedohns (still has some pay stuff, if you can believe it, where's the Sims 1 booty when you need it) Awesome free stuff though: http://www.simgedoehns.de.vu/

Simslice has some useful patches to allow buy/build mode on community lots and upgrade food carts: http://www.simslice.com/freebies/ProgramsAndPatches.htm

And here's a big ole list of sites, some are long gone and others only offer Sims 2 stuff, but it's a place to start (click on the word "list" under the legend: http://theblist.com/index2.html

And of course TSR has a pretty big section of Sims 1 stuff and I think it's mostly free.

aeval99, thank you for the ample list of Sims 1 stuff. You are turning my mind to yearn for the good Sim 1 days with atrocious pathfinding and other difficulties - job friends requirements. I think I recall that Sims 1 had wall hacks for see-through glass walls and floors, and there was Claire the Bear knocking over my trash can, and talk of llama's and gnome workbenches, and the Jekyll and Hyde Chemistry Set. Well, why not - for memories sake I'll reinstall TS1 and have a round of old fun. Relearning the object descriptions will be a riot. Once again, thx everyone!

 Oh. I'm so jealous and sad. My computer card has problems dealing with Sims1 and I love that game the most.

What a great game and there are still people playing it and still people creating for it.

How nervy of EA to take down the Sims 1 site even though they are still selling the product. EA sucks.

C& C is a great site. Love the C&C gardening, Norma Jean Blues Bars, and fridges. The fridge/pantry was good too as were the baking ovens. The fridges had so many different plates of food and some of it was cold so kids could just go to the fridge and take out a meal or a platter of say crossants and cold cuts or whatever. The romance between the prodice seller and the flower seller was so cute. Liked the garden shed too.

Parsimonious always had fantastic Sims 1 items for home and community lots. I always loved their creations. They have Sims 1 stuff up though some of it may have been moved already. Here's links to 2 of my faves (you can navigate to all the other Parsimonious Sims 1 stuff from these links):

The beautiful heavenly bodies spa. http://www.parsimonious.org/furniture1/spa/3.shtml

Stark Studio
http://www.parsimonious.org/furniture1/studio/4.shtml

Marina Sims had some great stuff and the site is still up. There is a great medieval set (really lovely arches and columns)
http://marinasims.net/sims1/sims1.html

Around the Sims made wonderful Soms 1 things as well.
http://www.aroundthesims.com/

Well dressed Sims has TS1 clothes, heads/hair, and furniture

TSR still has Sims 1 downloads available.

Ohh this discussion is really making me consider installing it! It would run ridiculously fast on my computer, too, considering it ran just fine on my iMac ten years ago.

I really loved the fame system in Superstar (which Late Night seems to be bringing to TS3) and the magic in Makin' Magic (I never got to play witches in TS2 because they didn't release Apartment Life for Mac. :'(

What issues are you having?

The game plays very fast (which is actually okay since I often played it in fast mode) and the graphics on my computers get reset and funky for everything not TS1 and I get pc messages about there being problems with settings. I had TS1 on my pc this winter but I had to take it off because there were a lot of issue with the pc when it was on there. I was not too surprised since it was created for OS win 95. Also, vista sucks. Should it run ok (other than fast)? I really wanted to keep TS1 on my pc to play superstar and Making Magic and also to be able to create more TS1 looking community lots for TS3. Even though they function differently, I actually like having my TS1 for Ts3 lots in my game since my community lots are more active than the EA lots and it puts a smile on my face to see my sims running from ghosts in The Gothic Quarter or playing foosball at The Lake Barrett Lounge. My sims can spend all day at Solana Landgraab Plaza without getting bored -- that lot plays really well but it reminds me that we don't have a real boutque or a real diner which is sad.

I would love to see screens of the following if any one could post them:

Pool party
Studio Town Spa
Witches dueling on the dueling stage
A sim recording a music video
a sim in the skkydiving or scuba tank
A dog show
A sim filming a show
A sim making a movie
A sim on the modeling runway
Sims suing dress up box
Sims playing chardes

Actually, I think I'd enjoy seeing any screenshots from TS1.

FYI - some people here said things were too small--you only need to change your screen resolution to view the game larger.

Also, there are some good looking faces and hair for Sims 1 at Nightime Sims. The faces come in regular and vampire sims ( eyes are red). There several designers there. Khrymsin was one of my favorites there. http://www.nighttimesims.no/
Also lots of TS1 clothes and faces at Glamour Sims

I still just love the original Sims and I've been playing it quite a bit lately. I love the sense of humour and atmosphere the game has, and Makin' Magic is still the best thing ever (with Seasons a close second).

One thing I'd forgotten is how freaking hard the game is. It's a real challenge just to keep everyone fed, socialized and amused. I had to download a bunch of hacked objects to make things run smoother. I have no idea how I played all those years ago when there were no hacked objects. I'm having so much fun rediscovering the game. The other night when I was playing Claire the Bear stopped by, stole my honey, and then was attacked by a swarm of bees. It was so hilarious watching a Sim in a bad bear-suit flapping about my lot with a swarm of bee's after her.

There are a few things that are annoying (although not as annoying as I thought they might be) like only having 4 camera views and not having any terrain paints or building cheats. The only thing that really drives me nuts is not having the eyedropper tool. What a pain in the arse it is to have to search through all those floors just because you want an extra few tiles of patio! Still, it's a fine trade-off for the game content, especially in MM and UL...now those are some awesome expansion packs!
t's truly a shame. they did it fairly recently, because google still has a cached version of the sims 1 web page, and it was from august 10th. that means they had to have deleted the website some time within the past 7 days or so.
I downloaded the MM pantry from there on Sunday night, so it's been within the last few days. Yesterday it had a "tech issues" splash page up. I really can't see any reason for them to take it down; it can't be costing them all that much to run and it's not like they have to update it. I certainly hope that some idiot didn't press the wrong button somewhere. But yeah, i really want a SC5 because Societies was pretty much some weird title mill game that had the word "sim" in it.
Am I the only one who liked Societies? I know it wasn't SC5, but it wasn't meant to be. I liked just being able to build something without screwing around with endless water pipes and power poles. :lovestruc

You've all got some really good points. The game was probably a bit too difficult. Fulfilling the basic needs of a family of four was a major challenge, let alone all the hobbies like gardening and magic they could get involved with.

And of course the MUSIC in the first game has never been bettered in the later ones. I can still remember the latin songs, must have listened to those tracks like 5000 times the amount I played that game!

I'm stuck with sims 2 because i lost my sims 3 disk...not that being stuck with sims 2 is a major problem i just haven't gotten a chance to really play it. But i do miss sims 1 but the difficulty might make me run after i play it once lol....enough of my rambling

The toilets are pretty nasty :) Gods I love TS1, it's still overall the most charming game of them all. It has the Maxisness, the inside jokes of funny geeks in that EA games just don't have. it's way quirkier than anything since. MM and UL were my favourites, and I loved to make my sims superstars as well. Someday I have to buckle up and dig all my old disks out and install them.... one by one since I have been buying them from the start, I don't have an easy Complete Collection.

Wherever you got that stuff it looks dashing, and the viewer might mistake it for TS2. The third image baffles me, that there is a butter churning barrel and a skill meter for it - it must be a body meter.

My new game has had one sim week living and already there's been a fire, a burglary, running out of money, and comedy:

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131110
Let's get right to work on wooing Bella. I'll mess with her head by rattling on and on about how great is that we can be just friends. "What?" she'll ask herself. "Why isn't he working an angle to get me on a date?" I'm such a player...

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131111
That's right. A paltry 600 a week is what I get for an associate's degree. When they say you have to start at the bottom it literally means wallowing in the dirt and liking it. TS3 players take note: You have it easy.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131112
Soon you will realize that the phone is no good for improving your relations quickly. It only goes one round before hanging up, and if you call a second time the sim will be angry. I've got Bella here and have just asked her in person to go downtown with me as 'friends'. And why is it, with Bella right there behind me, I'm now asking Bella for a date again over the phone? Who is on the other end of the line?

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131113
Ah, here we are downtown, alone at last without that pest Mortimer in the way. I'm doing him a favor, as this way he'll never know the pain of his cuckoldry. Ah, Bella! You are so... what's this, you want to greet me again? But we rode here together on that taxi that we are now blocking.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131114
Drat! A burglar has invaded my lair of luv and has made a beeline for my most prized possession. In TS1, burglars actually manage to take something before the police get there. Stay away from my Pentium 4, you slobbering goon!

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131115
What? How is it that getting robbed gives me more gain than I could ever hope to earn in a month with my current job? By the way, the diploma isn't real - I made it at Kinko's.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131116
Augh! Stuck in the friendship zone never to recover. No matter, I'm still God's gift to female sims. I had completely forgotten that TS1 allowed sims to give presents to the player. It's nice to know that my 'friendship' was appreciated. Farewell, my sweet.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131117
This is nowhere near enough to cover the three bills I've accumulated. Now I'll never get that jacuzzi I need to convince Bella to ask the judge to lift that restraining order.

Oh, I love TS1! Makin Magic, Superstar? Count me in! I love how my computer can handle like every expansion pack installed at once, too. The only thing I hate is those FOUR CAMERA ANGLES.

My favourite thing about it is its quikiness, and its sense of humour and the OBJECT DESCRIPTIONS (in buy mode catalogue). They are so Maxis, and EA's object descriptions just suck, and arn't witty nor clever. Gotta finish up my TS3 projects so I can reinstall. :)

Oh God, I'm getting all nostalgic thanks to those pictures.

I remember House Party, where I'd have dozens of guests, just by ringing the phone a few times and hosting a party (parties with only a couple of guests in the sequels were so lame). I also remember a few sims bringing over gifts, and my sims taking them and automatically throwing them in the trash in front of the gift giver without hesitation.

So many more memories. My first family (which failed so badly because I didn't know what to do and was only about 7 or so), my first pet dragon that burned down the Goth home. Oh, so many memories.

But I don't think I could ever go back. I've been spoiled by the sequels.

This has convinced me to reinstall. I have tried a number of times to play it again but it really is very tricky to try and keep your sim's mood up - I remember having this purple magic mirror in every studio town lot when I first learnt to download stuff.

I always just wished there was a MTS forum for Sims 1; I learnt so much about Sims 2 and 3 from here and I am sure there is a lot of TS1 I have yet to discover. And I've forgotten so much; like, can sims marry? I am sure they can but I don't remember how. Hmm, maybe there's a prima guide to download somewhere!

I just received this answer (or non-answer) from EA customer service. I'm not really sure what "sunsetting" is? Since they say the issue will be resolved, I'm hoping that they are making it an archive rather than shutting it down altogether.

Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts regarding your issue with The Sims. I understand that this can be frustrating and I'm going to do my best to resolve this issue for you as fast as possible. We are aware that the website currently sends to The Sims 3 website. I'm sorry for the inconvenience this causes but we are sunsetting the services for that site, as we channel more resources to The Sims 3.

For the forseeable future, we will be keeping the Sims 1 site linking to The Sims 3, I currently have no information suggesting that it will be changed at any point. I apologize for the inconvenience.

That's what I thought, but that's pretty much EA in a nutshell. I love the games but I truly dislike and distrust the company. I can certainly understand not wanting to clog up their servers with long forgotten exchange stuff or a disused log-in system, but why can't they at least keep the main page up with all the patches and other goodies that were available.

Perhaps they are seeking to steal the crown of 'lousiest customer service, ever" from Comcast's lofty head.

Ive

Ya. Only game I actually buy from EA is The Sims. Don't bother getting any of the other ones as I don't really want to support them

My dad used to have a deal with EA Norway trough his job and the guys there were really nice and gave us hundreds of free games, including the sims. Seems like such a long time ago. Now the company is just unreachable in every way.

It's nice to know that Germany is keeping the dream alive. I would be interested to use googles translate page feature just to see what German players think of TS1.

For those of you who are playing or about to play - get the jacuzzi asap! Your sim needs friends to climb up your career, and the best way to make and maintain friends is with the jacuzzi. Without it you will be stuck at a low level, earning a paltry sum and fighting an uphill battle to make friends and still fill your needs. Relationship scores have a long term number that increases slowly, so you need a reliable way to entertain en masse. A soak in the jacuzzi with company before work will likely raise mood enough for a promotion.

Edit:

Looking at German sites I see they have renamed some expansions / stuff packs:

did you guys know that when you start the game from the .exe in the install directory, the game appears just a little bit bigger?

It's worth a try. By that, I imagine, the game would not box certain screens within that wide border but instead use the whole screen? A little test for me right after this post.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131487
At long last, my strategic romantic overtures have manifested the ultimate pity kiss. Oh, Bella, your lips are muy bueno! I must capture this feat of my olympic studliness and frame it so that it can complete my mini Bella shrine - using, of course, my favorite font, Cooper. Title: Bella, my Numero Uno.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131488
And who is this flamboyant fashion statement? Or would goudy be a more precise word? Nowhere in TS2 or TS3 have I seen so many outrageously dressed sims downtown. This is a mere taste. Clashing Vancome ladies, shirtless goons, ancient Greek citizens in togas, leather chaps, mumbling hipsters, etc, roam the venues in sheer certainty that nothing seems wrong. TS1's approach to fashion is 'anything goes.'

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131489
Are these Double Dragons intentional? It's hard to say whether Maxis wanted a doubletake or if this was an unplanned coincidence that evolved into tradition in later games. Keep in mind that the developers were ad libbing with liberty to drive the game further into success. The charm of TS1 is the desperation of its wackiness, imo.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131490
I have strong mixed feelings about this grape-watermelon individual. At times, his enchantments have lead to results that made no sense whatsoever, such as flooding my lawn with useless pink flamingos. Twice he's teleported a grumpy Mortimer into my sim's house, another time he zapped a few skill points into oblivion, once again he infested my living room with useless vines that could only be cleaned up in live mode, not deleted. Still, without this entertaining green and purple supernatural I wouldn't have been able to purchase the jacuzzi so soon, an object that is so critical to a house with only one sim.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131491
Do you recognize this sim? Actually, she knew the Beatles when they were still the New Kids on the Block. When she was a child, there was no such thing as history class. Let me tell you, Mr and Mrs Crumplebottom were in a marriage of disrepair before he died. It is said that Mr Crumplebottom declared that beyond death he would dig out of the grave to haunt her. Knowing this, Mrs Crumplebottom had him buried upside down.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131492
And finally, with a level 7 job in journalism, my sim is exiting the 'treading on water' phase of survival. I must say that getting my sim to this point was a merciless struggle. You can't take TS1 seriously, because if you do you will find yourself fighting enraged impulses to strike something, perhaps even the screen. But through it all the addictive nature pays off in the sheer satisfaction of knowing that you have beaten the hellish, one sim household handicap that Maxis throws at you. The developers realized this and added new buff items to take the edge off of starting difficulty. That said, TS2 and TS3 wish they had challenge. From this point on I can march willingly into the craziness that awaits, starting with the Gnome Workbench and the Jekyll and Hyde Chemistry Set.

It must be a safe mode for TS1. It can zoom in much closer but it seems 640 x 480 resolution. Also the refresh rate is higher, that I can see and feel a clear improvement just by scrolling. It has also solved a downtown problem that I have. My soundcard is a SoundBlaster Audigy 2. This particular card is prone to some malfunction after the warranty expires, that it will spaz out with some games and create a rapid, loud, recursive clicking noise. That is the case with my card, and it happens downtown and makes it almost unplayable. But using the .exe seems to have solved the issue for me.

Thank you, christmas fear. At last, I... I mean my sim can actually take Bella on a date downtown, and I can wear headphones without the sound of agony from that troublesome soundcard of mine.

I play my game at 800x600 resolution and on all computers that's always filled the screen for me. Does it not for others?

For TS1, played from the interface that auto-pops up when you close the cd / dvd drive, it gives a choice between 1024 x 780 and a lower res ( either 800 x 600 or 640 x 480 ). I have been choosing 1024 x 780 because... because why not in 2010? And TS1 plays at that res, but cheats by rendering the material inside a border designed for what purpose a programmer would know. we can call it laziness. Using the .exe forces or defaults to the lower res, and therefore fills the entire screen.

This is what I'm trying in vain to articulate:

click below or see the attached jpeg
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1131564

That blue border is there to comply with the higher resolution. And gameplay on the lot screen is simply run at the higher res, and therefore zooms in at max to a longer distance. Using the .exe described by christmas fear forces 800 x 600 so you would not see the blue area ( this applies to the neighborhood screen ).

edit/ respectively, running the game on my exe file makes it show up like this

Is that exactly how it shows on your screen? It's cropping out four of the needs bars and what looks like 20% of the interface. But if you have no problems playing in that condition then have at it.

I recently decided to install The Sims 1 and all of the EP's since my computer can handle it all.

I figured "You wasted all of your and your parents' money 6 years ago and you haven't even played them in 6 years. This needs to be fixed, now!" Seriously, I got them all within the range of the first several months of 2004 and after The Sims 2 came out I didn't even touch them. Talk about wasting money... D:

However installing them was on the edge of my most recent "The Sims phase" so I didn't get much playtime in. Maybe next time. Just a bit frustrating of a game. Friends are like impossible to make in that game!

That's true, if you try to play exactly as the challenge is written in the forums...but I've been able to modify my own Sims 1 versions of some of them as long as I stay within the limits of what Sims 1 is capable of. Shoosh Malooka
28th Aug 2010, 02:50 AM
It's true that being poor mitigates the bills by logic of 'less things, less to pay for.' But TS1 is the only Sims that demonstrates the details and difficulties in the chain of basic survival, where sims without better stuff to keep their needs satisfied vs the amount of time they have in day will eventually lead to a misery trap. Soon, the single household sim is swamped with not enough time due to endless complain animations, low skills from lack of motivation to improve skills, not enough energy because of a low quality bed, no time for friends for hope of a promotion, decreasing funds, and finally death by starvation / fire. Poor is the main antagonist that single sims are meant to struggle with and overcome until a level 6 job brings them out of treading water. Then, finally, they can start playing with more interesting things, make wooden gnomes, dabble with chemicals, throw massive parties, etc. I guarantee you, being poor in this game will drive you insane in the membrane until you hate it so much that it drives you to find a way out of the nightmare for good.

I finally reinstalled TS1 last week and it was an interesting experience. I made a single male Sim, having him start out in the superstardom 'career' and I can't believe how hard it was! I quickly got into a trap where all his free time after work was spent fulfilling needs, leaving very little time for socialising. I started him out in modelling and he was making $130 on a good day. With one fame star he needed a body skill to advance but didn't have enough money for an exercise machine (no gyms or visiting friends' houses here!) I was just getting to desperation point when he started a fire making dinner and knowing he couldn't afford to replace the kitchen if it burnt down I made him try to put the fire out and he died. The End.

So yeah, maybe I'll go back to it soon, making a couple and having them start out in the standard careers.

Sorry about necro-ing the thread, but this really is the best place for this here.

How are you guys getting the game to work with Win7? I've got a 1680x1050 monitor - if I play the game in fullscreen, it stretches and warps the pictures making all the sims look like they're half squashed. If I play the game in windowed, it drops the display color from default 32-bit color to 16-bit color and doesn't change back after I exit the game - I've got to go into the monitor settings and change it back to 32-bit (I've actually had this problem since XP it's just more noticable now with Win7). I've tried various compatibility settings, I've tried tweaking the shortcut variables (I've got the disk in the drive but I always start the game from the desktop shortcut not the game disk autorun), I've tried everything I can think of that doesn't include resetting half my software and hardware any time I play the game. Help!

Have you tried running it as a Windows...XP game (or whatever version the Sims 1 was)? There's, at least on vista, the option to run games as if you're playing on a computer compatible with that game.

For example, I had a game that was compatible with Windows 95, so I ran it as Windows 95 compatibility mode. And it worked just fine.

If that doesn't help I don't know what will.

LunyKimberly

Yeah, compatiblilty mode was no help with that - still kept the same problems. I did find out though that I could go into my NVIDIA control panel (which was burried three deep in the Win7 control panel) and change the default stretch/fit options for programs. I've got to run the game in fullscreen instead of windowed like I'd like to, but the game looks like it should when playing and it goes back to 32-bit color on game exit.

I tried to play the Sims again, but it was just too old and dated for me to play. I've had great memories for it; just not so much about nostalgia to play it on a irregular basis.

Oh and I would shit my pants whenever there's a burgler. That damn cueing music gives me a heartattack each time... I would always look at the clock and anticipate for a burgler.

I still have my Sims 1 and all EPs. I'll be darned though that I don't have a single clue anymore how to install CC. I just think I remember it was a lot more complicated,( well the LOTS were anyway. I had a map that indicated the number of the lot so that you could place the house you downloaded in the right spot) than Sims 2 and of course Sims 3. Is there still a tutorial up somewhere on that? I LOVED all the cool, fun things in that game! Drew Cary showing up was just one cool thing. The goofy and unexpected Sims experience of those days wow. O and I completely forgot that they don't age!

I used to play TS1 up until recently (recently being from an old person's perspective some 2 years) and have never played TS2. My Intel Mac, however, does not like to run it well under Rosetta and so it is, of course, stuttery. More than TS3 I have to say.
And as Inge said, simblesse oblige was the main starting point for me for new stuff long after the game itself had been disbanded plus a site that, I think, came only into existence then http://www.woobsha.com/index.html

I've never played TS1 before and the dated graphics don't really compel me to want to try it out on my PC and big monitor. However, I thought this might be a good game to port to mobile phones. I'd definitely try an iPhone or Android version of it.

Totally worth it. Graphics may be prehistoric but the game play is very fun and entertaining with LOADS of activities for your sims. Wish our new gussied up TS3 sims could do some of the thing TS1 sims could. My machine has trouble running it but I sometimes think of buying a cheap used pc just to be able to play it again.
This was my favorite Sims game. Sigh*

I just recently started playing TS1 again, i really missed it. Also because my graphics card got fried and TS3 wouldn't work, nor TS2, but i think TS1 has something that the other two lack of.

I don't know wether it's the style, that touch of reality even with 2D or what, and also TS3 is a complete failure with all these patches we needed to patch so the patch could patch the patch and fixed what needed to be patched, it's crazy! So i kinda got tired of it.

I do still play TS2 on my mum's laptop and so she does too, but TS1 is great for spending some time playing and doing fun stuff, i will always love it (and it has the best music of all three! WTH was that music on TS3?!?! prfff) :3

I haven't played ts1 in a long time. It usually happens like this, play obsessively, get new computer, all games & expansions lost, update to next one. That'll prolly happen again by the time 4 comes out.

I've never dealed with nostaliga properly. I was nostalgic about Sonic adventures, so i purchased the game again and to my shock, i didn't like the game as before.

Same result was with Need for Speed Underground 2. I realised because i used to play it with my Family. Now my brother's way to busy with work and my Dad doesn't like video games anymore, i play them alone. And their's no thrill of the game anymore. And who of my friends would like to play ancient games? It's sad.

I remember i played Sims 1 once and loved it, i loved it when you went downtown and that Taxi screen came up. When my brother said he was selling it i wasn't happy, so i 'borrowed' his Sims 1 games from him. I never had a computer then, so i gave them off seeing as i couldn't use them. Then my dear old deceased grandad gave me my first ever computer, and when i asked for the disc's back, they didn't have them -.-. I never got to truely play Sims 1.

I played TS1 at my cousin's house a few summers ago. All I did though was create interesting ways to kill them. I couldn't bother actually playing. I suppose my problem is I grew up playing TS2, which is a big improvement from TS1, and then playing TS1 after TS2's glory, it was like garbage to me.

But I know the game must be fun. But graphics is a big deal to me...

I recently installed Sims 1 on my own computer - I had always played it on my mom's because I could never get it to work on Vista (until now, hoho!). I have all expansions except Superstar, but I don't really need it. (That's right, I have the INDIVIDUAL expansions because I bought them as they came out! How old am I? xD )

The Sims 2 is a real step forward, but there is something about the original Sims that makes me crave it...I couldn't care less about graphics if a game is good! (I also never have as much trouble with TS1 downloaded content as I do sometimes with TS2 content. xD Smaller game data makes for fewer errors.)

And do not even get me started on the music! (Not that I've added all the TS1 music onto TS2 or anything.....*cough*)

I personally think that the graphics on sims1 was better in certain respects. For example, the creator had the final say on how detailed an object appeared - also how light and cheerful, how shadowy and forboding. And that applied to the Sims' faces also. You could give a sim a personality and history by how you textured their face. You could do it light and cartoony, or deeply etched by years of suffering.

With Sims 1 and 2, as the game renders the textures, something of the personality of the sims and objects is washed over by the same brush.

I started playing S1 only couple years ago, about a month before I got hooked on S2. I have the complete collection installed and I still play it now and then. It's a legend, you can't forget it! :) And it's still fun to me. I just wish that they could have made some objects to S2 or S3 from it... And that is, the mechanical bull!

I've actually been losing interest in TS3 for awhile now, as it just hasn't felt like a sims game. At first I just thought it might be a bad case of nostalgia-itis, so I reinstalled all TS2 and TS1 packs on my computer.... and I CAN'T STOP PLAYING.

I'm just going to start off by saying that I've been playing the sims since I was 10, all the way back in 2000 when the first game hit shelves. My sister and I grew up with the games, so as lame as it sounds I'll always have this place in my heart for them, as the franchise is much more than just a game to me. Whenever I had a shitty day at school, I'd come home, turn on my computer and escape into this virtual world where anything was possible. I always knew that after an hour or two of playing, I'd be back on top of the world again. Whenever a new expansion pack would come out, for the first 5 years when I couldn't drive, I would get up early in the morning before school to go with my mom to the store and make sure I had my expansion pack... subsequently I'd often skip school that day and play it until dinner was ready or I had to go to bed.

In my late teens years to now, I don't play as often as I use to. Perhaps once or twice for a few hours every other week. Plus I've never been a big video game person, with The Sims franchise being the exception. I feel like with TS1 and TS2 there is a certain humor and charm to it, which seriously lacks with TS3. Wheres the alien abductions? The tragic clown? CLAIRE THE BEAR?!? The stories and characters is what made me fall in love with the game. Yes, TS3 has the design tool, open world, slider tools etc. which I love, but it just doesn't feel like a sims game. There is absolutely no humor or character to the game. No heart was put into it like the previous games, and its evident that they just churn them it out to make more money, which is unfortunate.

I can't sit and play TS3 for hours on end. Its impossible. I'll probably go in and play for 30 minutes tops, and then forget about it for a week or two. I'd give TS3 up for more TS1 and TS2 expansions, with TSO thrown back in there for good measure.

Haha, I bought them all individually at first, too - got all of them except Hot Date because my mom thought I was too young! XD Then when The Sims 2 came out I had them buy me the Complete Collection! I was 5 when the original Sims came out, and I've been playing it ever since - I have all the expansions for all 3 games (and stuff packs for 2 and 3). But yeah, I love The Sims 1. Even though the others are huge improvements, the original always draws me in. lol

I got win 7 and it works wonders :) Have you tried changing the compatibility?

If you can't get it to work you could maybe still try the game help forum. Don't know if they can help (or offer help) though

Sims 1 violates the Windows Vista-Seven protected mode so it will not play unless you have Windows 7 professional and set it to emmulate a Windows ME environment. You can also download or purchase an Emmulator through Microsoft that Simulates any hardware environment back to DOS 6.22. I used it on my Server 2007 for some older networking tools at the Microsoft Helpdesk job I had.

Would it be possible for EA to convert it to work with newer models? If so, I wonder why they haven't done so yet, because so many people love TS1 but can't play it.

*scratches head* Simple like infinite backwards compatibility with everything ever? Sadly, software becoming obsolete is just how things are in the process of getting more powerful systems.

That said, it's a total crock that only Win7 Pro has all the backwards compatibility options. (Fortunately for me I can get a free digital download of it through my school. It didn't install last time I tried, but now that I've been reminded of the Sims 1-playing benefits, I am determined to make it work!)

The one I wanted to buy was the origional version, but I decided not to right before buying it because of the requirements, and I asked my tech savvy father and he said that it wouldn't work.

That being said, I shall go on Amazon or eBay and find a decently priced complete collection.

I have started playing Sims 1 again. I play it on Windows 7 with absolutely no issues, and I am not even using a compatibility option- same goes for every windows OS I've ever had. Sims 1 isn't really old enough to freak out on newer OSes, so I'm not sure where all the trouble is coming from.

Anyway, the fun in Sims 1 lies in the challenge- my sim has been around for over 70 days now and he has only *just* gotten married, has only learned 5 spells, and has barely upgraded a single thing in his house. The motives are a lot harder to handle, the bills are harder to handle, upgrading furniture is a necessity for an easy life, etc.

It's the only reason I haven't made anything for TS3- TS3 is just too easy, and I doubt I'll play it except when new expansions come out. At least until someone overhauls it to be as difficult as TS1.

Most people just seem to be unable to get it to install and/or properly launch, from what I've heard. Some have to do "run as administrator," or go in to do the compatibility options; for others, not even those steps work. Last time I checked the Sims 1 games were all officially declared as "compatible," for whatever that's worth.

I myself seem to be in the unique situation of the oldest-of-old Sims 1 base game installing and working just fine, but the subsequent EPs will not. (When installing them I'd get messages about not having enough RAM to support the game, which was sort of hilarious.)

Unfortunately, DOSBox won't help you with The Sims 1 - DOSBox is only for playing DOS games and not Windows games, and TS1 is a Windows game.

You could try getting a copy of The Sims Triple Deluxe, which was a later updated version that already includes a couple of the expansion packs - I recently installed that, plus all the other expansion packs, on my Vista PC and it all installed and works fine. I haven't tried it with Windows 7, but I've found that for me, everything that worked on Vista works on 7, as they are so similar, so you may be lucky!

I play Sims1 on occasion. In regards to all the issues, I have Windows 7 and run the Complete Collection. For my game to work I have to run it as Administrator and in compatibility for windows 95. My Vista computer had the same issue with compatibility. Actually the Vista computer ran the game, but the dialogues as the townies were generated kept cycling around, thus keeping me from being able to play the game, and changing the compatibility and running it as admin, made it work right.

I forgot i started this thread and surprised its still going xD Sims 1 works fine on Windows 7. Only thing is that I play mines in window mode, and for some reason that switches my resolution settings from 32 bit to 16 bit. After I play, I have to manually go back and switch it back to 32 bit.

Guysim1993, I know how you feel. I almost died a few times from the epic music. I sent my sim on vacation for the first time in years and i literally stayed on the vacation's hood screen (where it shows all the different lodgings) and sat with mouth opened hypnotized at the awesome music.

Had the complete collection for years now, and still have been playing it for years. It makes for extremely confusing gameplay, I'll switch to TS2 and wonder why "Magic Town" is no longer a destination, or I'll hop on my "Show Business" career Sim and be upset that I can't go to Studio Town to perform those little mini-games/ratings raisers.
Deaths were so much easier to recreate in Sims 1 as well (without using cheats, that is) just set up some furniture a round, fire off a rocket/firework in the living room, instant "chamber of fire"
Call it morbid but I used to trap house guests in a cage (fence) with a bunch of furniture then set off a rocket, watch their demise.
The items were simply amazing too, sky diving tank, scuba diving tank, those are things you just can't replace.

Deep down, I preferr Sims 1 simply for the atmosphere, it was guinenly fun, you didn't need mods or even cheats (though the money ones helped) to have fun. I love TS2, but I feel if it weren't for all the boolProp cheats (especially testingcheats) as well as custom content, I wouldn't enjoy it much.

Sims 1 is classic. It made my childhood, and I had a lot of fun playing it. I don't know if I could go back, tough, since I got spoiled with 3D, create a style and open hood.

My sister lately installed it again and though I went all nostalgic- I was around 10 when I started playing, which was an decade ago ... I'm really becoming old ;-) - I wouldn't want to change again. Yes, some gameplay features were nice and I would like them to be in the Sims 3 again, but I would miss CAS and the open neighborhood and the look of the sims. And the growing up kids ...

Sims 1 has plenty of stuff to do, many more features than TS2 and TS3 combined. That said, the dificulty was also a killer. I used to play a sim in the military career. She would get up, use the bathroom, grab breakfast, go out, come home, have fun and go to sleep. Over and over and over. And if anything happened differently in that routine it'd be red needs going wild and me tearing my hair out.

Of course I was a pre-teen back then xD today I'd probably be much more adept at managing.

I agree, actually. (^)

Now that I actually think about it, when I played the sims 1 I would have huge ass houses, fill each room with a lot of stuff, have all these flowers and I would get a tonne of animals... well, not really, only as many as was allowed. My favorite was Makin' Magic. I'd have my sim sleep the day away, then go to Magic Town, dual, perform tricks, and all that stuff, then go home, eat/sleep and wake up to do the same thing.

I really liked superstar too. When I'd have those random people coming to my house and snapping photos of my sim's house I'd jump for joy... I mean, when I played that game I was 12, so it was exciting. My superstar had a stripper pad, I swear though haha.

Sims 1 has a lot of neat objects... and clothing, as I mentioned...

I dunno about that. :) I played TS1 (loooooooove it~) about a week ago for the first time in a long time and it was kicking my ass. Their motives seem to drop faster + they can't replenish any while at work + there are no days off of work/school... Houseplants have to be watered, light bulbs on certain lamps burn out, and there's a lot fewer ways to multitask... Plus I'm impatient to get Sims built back up the various skill levels (especially for magic and celebrity status) they were prior to TS2's release (i.e. when TS1 was a lot higher priority and I had probably hundreds of hours logged on it) so I'm overwhelmed by the hundreds of awesome things just waiting for them to do but argh they need to sleep again? :lovestruc

I found the original Sims alot more challenging than the current Sims. I don't know whether that was down to the fact that Iwas 11 when the original game came out and was still learning to play it properly, or if it was just harder in general. All my Sims families seemed to be poor and every household lost at least one child to military school. I remember it took me ages to realise that my sims would need a food processor to cook decent meals so my first sim families often lived on cold tins of beans.
My favourite sims family were a lesbian couple who were desperate for a baby but never seemed to get a phonecall from the adoption people. So they spent hours making love potions to entice men who could get them pregnant. Then I'd kill off the men and the couple happily brought up the babies together. They earned a living making gnomes... It's that kind of craziness that I miss.

Sims 1 always seemed less predictable than The Sims 2 and 3. I really miss little touches like Claire the bear and the obsessed fan from Superstar (the less annoying version of the LN papparazzi I guess :p ).

Sims 1 is an amazing game and I struggle to pinpoint what it is exactly that made it so special. The fun in that game was never duplicated in any Sim game that came afterwards, although I do love and play Sims 2 and Sims 3. Was it because of the constraints of motives/energy/money? Was it because of how cranky Sims could be or how aggravatingly stupid? Was it the wacky humor? It played like a sitcom and could be played with in the wackiest way. For example, remember the fun of using the "move_objects on" cheat and putting your Simmies in the lawn while they were in the midst of swimming in the pool? I've built swimming ponds in the Sims 2 that didn't have clear boundaries and have had Sims swimming in the grass as well, but it wasn't as funny. I built a restaurant called "Islands" that was dining booths surrounded by pools and the kitchen was as well. It was a hoot to watch Mrs. Crumplebottom, fully clothed, swim around the place clutching her handbag. The waitstaff would swim over to the kitchen and take a plate of food in one hand, make a beautiful swan dive with the plate in one hand, and swim with it over their heads. The building features were severely limited, but for whatever reason, I was more inspired in that game to explore different themes and to recreate buildings from stories and TV. Maybe it was just faster because it was simpler. I'm not sure.

The military career would take all of the Sims' energy. The simplest solution was to use the cheat "move_objects on" and delete the Sim, then click on his icon and voila - fully refreshed Sim! Personally, I prefer to play without the cheat as it is such a challenge, but the refresh motive cheat can be a lifesaver sometimes.

VerDerTerre - Your "islands" restaurant sounds like a hoot and I'll bet it is lots of fun to watch and play. I loved the Ts1 diner and the food wagons and stand that you could place around town to keep Sims from passing out from hunger ( ice cream, smoothies, spicy kabaobs, coffee and pastries, etc,) And the fashion runway where your sims would do the cat walk dressed as a donut and coffee or in lingerie. And the hard rock song having a stone henge backdrop for the music video whereas in the pop song they were in metalic jumpsuits riding giant seahorses. The game was just so funny and detailed.

yeah, TS1 was/is definitely the funniest of all sims games. Making of videos, lol, it was so funny when your sim started to fly :D And the outfits...

Honestly, I just was never into Sims 1, even as a kid. I could never get into the characters, I would just make super gigantic mansions with my younger cousin. I stopped playing for years and years, until I found sims 2 a year or two ago. Then I haven't turned back, lol :D

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I started playing Sims 1 again lately and I'm getting pretty frustrated that my children can't age up into adults. I know you can age them up with a charm in Makin' Magic but I also heard there was a hacked birthday cake called the Puberty Cake floating around somewhere? I believe it used to be on Millennium Sims but their site is down. Does anyone have a link to it/would anyone be able to upload it? I would really appreciate it!

The magic piece is pretty simple and it's something the kids concoct themselves. I don't know about a hacked object, but why not try the traditional route? Personally, I never liked aging the kids up. You would then have another adult in your household without an easy means to move them out. Family relationships were not observed and suddenly the child could flirt with his parents.

There's also a way to use magic to turn a pet into a human.

Never had it. I didn't have a modern computer until right before Sims 2 came out (before that I didn't have one at all for years but from Xmas 1985 until about summer 1994 I had a Commodore 64. Had the original Sim City for it, too.) Sims 2 was one of the first things I got for it.

I just recently purchased all of the ep's for Sims 1. I started out with Sims 2 so never experienced the "magic" that simmers always talk about. I'm really enjoying the humour and quirkiness and it keeps me entertained for hours. I am now selling my Sims 3 ep's and sp's as for me, it really can't hold a candle to the first two in the series. Sims 2 is still my favourite but Sims 1 will definitely stay on my pc for those days when I need some whackiness! :)

I love the original sims rather allot. But it's just so quiet in game. I don't know if it's only me but I can't hear them speak. Or hear the T.V and Radio on a residential lot (Though I can on community lots) It just gets tiresome after a bit. It could be my 5.1 speakers and/or just Vista being weird.

Hey everyone, there's a section for Sims 1 (the original!) threads now. Wasn't that nice of MTS to do that? Check it out.

Reviving this thread now is pointless. I think it was made solely because there was no sims 1 section, but now there is.
