View Full Version : Laundry System--Is it worth the fuss?

So I haven't yet implemented laundry into my game yet because it sounds like an unnecessary pain in the neck, what with a pile of laundry generated every time a Sim changes his/her skivvies, especially for the paltry positive moodlet wearing clean clothes gives. But maybe there's a virtue to it that I'm missing?

I'm soliciting all opinions! Laundry: what makes it or breaks it for you?
(And don't just say the laundry gnome! ;) )

Never having to shower! Everytime a Sim changes into clean clothes they get a hygeine boost.

Tbh, Laundry isn't that much of a hassle, My sim's only need to do their laundry about once every two weeks.

Huh, okay. Another thing I'm confused on, does it continuously generate random laundry piles no matter how many times you change, or do you eventually run out of clothes to wear, like it's actually going through your planned outfits as you wear them?

It doesn't use up your actual outfits (although that might've been interesting) - it's just a random pile on the floor that your sim can pick up and put in the hamper or washing machine. Or you can drag it to the hamper which I like to do because I enjoy watching the clothes float down into the hamper like magician's scarves.
It isn't as hard and annoying as I thought it would be. The maid will do the laundry if you have one but in my games it seems like some days they don't do it.
I've never been to the laundromat yet so still don't know how that works.

Hmm, well that's slightly disappointing. It would've added to the immersion (and usefulness!) if it used actual outfits, but I can see how it would also be more of a hassle for programmers AND players... Good to hear that it's not too big a chore though. :)

LethalLaurie,
The annoyance is that every time your Sim changes clothes there will be a pile on the floor which, you either can move to the humper, as RoseCity described, or let your Sims pick them up and do the job for you. Another annoyance is that Sims seem to get addicted to clean clothes and if you play a household of six, like myself, there will be a lot of traffic in the laundry room.

On the bright side, I like Sims having a washing machine and a dryer, and the hygiene benefit from it, as severedsolo said. It is one of the objects I let Sims have once they roll the want to buy them. As for the laundry gnome, you will get it from the dryer, but it is totally random. So, if you are after gnomes don't allow the maid interfere with the laundry at all.

LOL well the tiny two-Sim households I play aren't exactly the type to have maids, anyway. :giggler:

I like the laundry system, but don't buy the washing machine til the wish rolls. I like sending them to the laundromat, get to meet new sims and talk while doing laundry. Also like the clean sheets moodlet, although I wonder if visiting sims get that moodlet. Tried watching the thought bubbles when they sleep in my sims bed.

The hamper system is annoying, my lots are small and now I have to make extra space in bathrooms for a hamper. Most of my starting lots have one full bath, and a shower room, the shower room is too small for a hamper, so I keep it in the livingroom and drag the pile to that hamper. Sort of messes up my decor in the livingroom.

Wait, so you can wash/change bed linens too? :o

LOL, no they don't actually change the sheets, just get a clean sheets moodlet when the laundry is done.

Noob question: how is going to the laundromat handled? So far, I've only played households with a washing machine. I take it the clothespiles will generate even if there's only a hamper on the lot? And then you ... click the hamper to get an interaction to go to the laundromat? Or do you god-hand the hamper into the Sim's inventory and send the Sim to the laundromat?

True, and I think your Sim needs to get the clean clothes from the dryer a few Sim hours before going to the bed in order to get the moodlet. Is that right, Lewis?

When I play a household and send them to the laundromat, I never have a hamper in the house. I just click on the lot tag, go to laundromat, then click on the washer to "do laundry". Magically, it is pulled from the back pocket.

I don't know how the laundromat is handled if there is a hamper in the house.

@Nalia, I am not sure on the time needed to pass, but every time I remove the laundry from the dryer or outside line, the "fresh clothes" and "clean sheets" moodlet comes up with the appropriate actions.

In my house, before they could afford a washer, they had hampers in the house and then would just go to the laundromat and do laundry. The hamper was empty when returning and they got the moodlets.

I thought laundry piles were only generated if you had laundry implements on the lot. So without hampers and machines and clotheslines, they don't generate the annoying piles but you can still wash clothes at the 'mat?

I don't use hampers in most of my starter lots, because lack of space. I was shocked when I first attempted it, thought it wouldn't work unless some hamper was on the lot too, but it worked, so I didn't think about it anymore. Also, did not want to deal with the piles clothes.

@Wickedblue, good to know about the hamper and laundromats.

How much do the laundromats cost to use?

I think my game may be bugged or something, because I have never been able to do laundry at the laundromat. I've tried not having hampers and washing machines at the sim's house, but nothing works!

Doing the laundry is annoying, but I've been wanting it in the game for years. I guess I need to be careful what I ask for

I was the opposite - I didn't want it because I was thinking of real life laundry, but now I don't mind it.

^ Lol. You know you could just cheat and buy one in the buydebug menu.

I like laundry, adds a bit of realism to the game. Tbh I grew up in a slightly chaotic household and the fact that it's so easy to keep your sim's house clean and tidy is just weird to me. So being able to increase the amount of housework by adding laundry is great. Neat sims LOVE it, they always roll wants for it. Plus I like being able to have a laundry room in my houses, or making better use of spare garage space.

So the overall consensus is that it's worth it?

I like it, it gives sims more things to do. Don't find it annoying at all, and the animations are nice to look at. Had a funny incident where a sim tried to stop a vibrating and foaming washing machine.

One of my sims got zapped in the face with a bolt of static electricity when she smelled the fresh laundry.

I love the laundry system in the Sims 3. I don't find it a burden at all. And if I find that I don't want to have a laundry system, I just don't buy hampers or a washing machine/dryer. And to keep down on the piles of random laundry, I include a hamper in all bedrooms and bathrooms with showers, so that when they change, it just automatically drops into the laundry hamper.

It's also a huge boost to their mood, sleeping in clean sheets and wearing clean clothes. I find that if I do a load of laundry before the workday starts, then they'll have that moodlet during work and it'll keep their spirits up just like the having a blast moodlet does. It makes me giggle to make them suffer to do laundry, just like I have to. I would find it tedious if they made us have to sort laundry into color coded piles like I have to. And when they get zapped or are wrestling with it, it's so funny. It's definitely one of my favorite parts of Ambitions, and I never even thought to have laundry in the game before it came out.

I kind of wish there were a few more laundry things to buy, though: not, like, more things, 'cuz there's plenty, but more options for washers and dryers. There's only two for each and a clothesline, and that's just not enough for me!

Wow, now that's a sales pitch! When I get back into the Sims (read: when Late Night arrives) I'll have to give it a try. :giggler:

LOL, funny, that's my sister's area of expertise! I guess she's rubbed off on me.

I guess I just like laundry. It tickles me pink, I suppose. It's supposed to be mundane and boring, but since I don't have to do it very often, and when I actually have the Sims interact, like blowing them up, or trying to fix the cheap washer that vibrates, I just find it funny. It's one of the silly real life things that you don't find very often. Sims is all about the silly.

I wasn't all that excited for laundry to be implemented into the Sims but, now that it is, it really isn't horrible or too bad. I do it for the moodlet bonuses it gives you because the time, effort, and mess it creates isn't horrible.

Another thing nobody mentioned is the life reward points sims with the "neat" trait will get. I'm doing the Four Sisters Challenge and my water sister is constantly rolling "do laundry" wants. Moodlet boost are nice as well since everyone in the household gets them!

Something curious I noticed was the laundry gnome seems to gravitate to the garden. When ever a plant is wilting the little guy is right next to it pointing. I'm going to try to remember to take a pic next time it happens.

i like laundry system.

haha and if u have klepto sims, and they rolls wish to do laundry,
u can just go to laundromat, wait for somebody to do their laundry, dried their cloth, and then u can steal their clean laundry.
i forgot the name of the interaction. just click on any dryer with finished-dried-cloth.

lol what a nice way to have clean cloth and moodlets without having to buy laundry machine or pay to do laundry.! hahaha

and i will remove laundry as soon as i get that damn bear.... That's the laundry genome? A few of my Sim's had it in their inventory and I had no idea what it was or where it came from.

Another thing nobody mentioned is the life reward points sims with the "neat" trait will get. I'm doing the Four Sisters Challenge and my water sister is constantly rolling "do laundry" wants. Moodlet boost are nice as well since everyone in the household gets them! All Sims get the "do laundry" wants, even those who find it against their nature like Sim's with "slob" and "hates kids" traits.

You learn new things every day, I've never noticed a hygiene boost from laundry, I thought it was just the moodlet that they got.

I didn't really see the point of laundry before we got it, but now it's one of my favourite features in the game. All my Sim's have a hamper and a washing machine on the lot. Even thou it can be a bit overwhelming sometimes when there is no time to do laundry and all the piles are fuming green, and sims are in miserable moods because of that. But, that's life. When LN comes out and I can have a city, I'll probably make a run-down laundry mat for the poor. Currently all my Sim's live in a village so even the poor have a tiny lot of garden they can put the clothe line into.

Another cute laundry thing is when Sims get soaked by the laundry. I think it only happens with the cheap washing machine when they are taking the laundry out to be dried.

What fuss? Laundry is fully automated by AwesomeMod's features, eliminating all player micromanagement. Huzzah.

I need to correct some information I gave earlier. The hamper is not empty upon returning from the laundromat. I don't know why I remembered it being that way.

So, the laundromat seems like it's pretty useless for incorporating an actual laundry system. It's great for a mood boost but if you want that and hampers and little piles of clothes, too bad. And that's really what I want since I absolutely adore the dirty laundry in random places. It seems odd but if you ever saw my place, you'd get it. :P
