Hi guys. I'm currently working on a corrugated iron roof texture...I tested it in game to see if it lined up right but I'm getting textures in the wrong places.

I don't know how to insert the images into this post here, but check the two files I've attached (they are appropriately named) and anyone who knows a lot about roof texturing, could you help me please :(

I've done some roofs but I do not consider myself an expert. But since I have some extracted roof textures lying around I compared them to what you have. I was pretty surprised. I thought that all the mapping was the same for every roof, but the tin roof file I have is quite different from yours in some ways, and the steel roof file is quite different in other ways. And yet I can't see how the mapping would be applied differently at all.

I just spent a frustrating half hour trying to find a place to host the images. Nothing seems to be working tonight. I'll try another time. I think maybe somebody with a good eye could explain whether the differences in the images are significant or not.

I based the mapping off a creator from The Sims Resource (Twinmum). As well as looking at the mapping from one of the corrugated roofs by Maxis to see if I could align the roof right, I was using the custom one as reference for the top parts of the roof.

Actually I think I might know why one of the textures is coming up wrong, the one with the arrows pointing at. I can see it on the mapping image now. All I have to worry about is the little texture coming up on the vertical lines. *sigh* :-P

Hey, I think I found it! It's not a misplaced texture, if I'm right. It's just a paler spot. Look at the texture image. Try to see it as being divided into four horizontal strips of image. At the top edge of the second strip, towards the middle of the strip, there's a very small traingular piece of flashing (or whatever that stuff along the edges is). Compare that one with all the other flashing pieces: it's lighter than the others. I think it's the triangles showing up on the flashing of your finished roof.

It would be cool if I'm right because darkening that piece to match the other flashing pieces would be easier than a lot of things you might end up doing.

I tested it, but it didn't end up being that particular spot. I've been trying to figure it out and just now did another test, only I drew different coloured spots and crosses over the image on all the top pieces which one of them is obviously the culprit, and found that it had been the piece near the top left corner. So I'm about to look at the fixed roof texture in game, and also find where the other misplaced textures (in between the dark vertical lines of the corrugated roof) are coming from too.

The thing I don't understand though is why the textures are all over the place? It's pretty confusing.

There was a slight improvement but it's still not matching up exact...this is incredibly frustrating, I thought I had it right -.-

Okay well I think I have it all figured out now but thank you for trying to help :)

Roof mapping is notoriously awful! I still don't understand why some of the roofs have different bits on them -- I can't see in game why those different bits exist. Whenever I color a roof with anything other than a straight flood fill, I have to do some experimental versions to make sure I'm getting it right.

Totally agree...I've been working on this for the past week, finally got most of it right, but now I've come up with another issue. You know how the roofs are darker in-game than what it is on the texture from SimPE? I wanted to make a white roof but it keeps coming up as grey, and I've been trying to fiddle with various things in SimPE to see if different settings will fix it. Haven't found anything useful, but the settings I was playing around with (in the DDS Builder, the drop down menu for "Sharpen") hasn't done anything useful but turn my roof black when zoomed out or the texture goes completely unless the camera is up close to it.

Having experimented with roof recolouring I can see why there are so few out there for many different reasons.
