View Full Version : Weirdness with platforms, fountains, and friezes

While answering a query about hot tub placement over in the LN forum, I got curious about the behavior of hut tubs with respect to platforms, friezes, foundations and decks, and did some experimenting. My findings are here: http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=424657

The restrictions on hot tubs didn't surprise me, since I already knew they require space below em, but what DID surprise me was the behavior of the frieze tool from Ambitions (accessed by using the cheat "placefriezes on"). Once you've placed a frieze on a lot, the platform tool and the rectangular fountain tool both act like frieze tools (though the curved fountain tool behaves normally).

It seems you can place platforms and fountains before you add friezes, but once you've added a frieze, you've essentially broken those tools. Deleting the frieze restores em to their normal functionality, though.

Anybody else notice this? Any rhyme or reason to it? Or just an odd bug? :)

I have found that if I place a frieze and then turn the frieze off using the cheat mode, I can't do anything but the frieze. I can't place foundations or anything. But if I turn off the frieze, go out of the lot into edit game and then back into build mode for that lot, I can now place the foundation. Essentially you have to reset the lot by going out into edit mode. You don't have to save it..just out and back in, sort of like when we used to change a lot from residential to community in Sims 2.

You don't need to exit the lot but you do need to exit the foundation/pool/fountain tool after you turn friezes off. Just exit to floor or walls or something then you shoud be able to click back on normal foundations etc. That's how it works for me anyway.

I have found out something interesting about the stages.. I have tried placing fences along the diagonals of a stage, and for some reason, the fences sit on the GROUND instead of raised to foundation height.. I could swear it didn't used to do this, but my mind is being wierd lately, so I may be wrong :)

Walls do that too with stages and you can't place doors on the edge unless you use MOO but the most annoying thing for me is that the curtains don't match up to the windows anymore. I mean, srsly. Why make the windows and walls anchor to the floor but the curtains anchor to the stage?! :wtf:

Oh, No, I meant that fences actually sit ON the stage, but diagonals of the same fence DONT.. :/

My question is, "What the heck is a frieze?"

Since I finally fixed my game, I don't want to experiment with cheats that I don't understand. lol

A frieze is basically a CFE'ed foundation that sits atop a wall, much like well.. CFE.. its just EA's lazy way of doing CFE. its like 6 clicks high instead of the 4,8 or 12 that CFE offers.. frankly, its kinda pointless.

Not entirely pointless with friezes in sims3, since it's so difficult to have regular measuring on dots when you click on the terrain tool with cfe. What I've found is that you need something to give you the right level for what you want to have. So if 1 part of a staircase (4 clicks?) is too little, then you can put down a frieze to get the 6 clicks option. When that's said, I only use it as a start. The rest of that frieze I make with cfe. The frieze leaves these silly looking open tiles, and will not close them.

For instance on a big build. I like big houses. Those 2 clicks before the flat roof, makes all the difference.

The good news is that Granthes made us vertically shiftable curtains, which overcomes this :) http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=427026

Already downloaded ;) might be my new favourite mod too, just a shame that I can't use the don't snap to wall mod at the same time :(

Volvenom, if you take it slowly you can place 2, 4, 6, 8....etc stairs so it's easy to get inbetweeny clicks without even using cheats :)
