View Full Version : Did the LN patch change ghost appearance?

I know that this topic might also belong to the help section, but I'm not entirely sure about this.
Yesterday I loaded some pre-LN saves and to my utter dismay I discovered that all my playable ghosts look different now. This is especially apparent with mummy-curse ghosts. Before the patch they were sort of greyish-black with white transparent hair and now they are brownish-black with black hair with an almost black face (see screenshot). The thumbnails still look like before but when I send them to the dresser this will update, too, into some indefinite black-brown.
I don't ask for fixes (yet) because I wanted to ask those first who have playable mummy-curse ghosts whether they experience the same or whether this is something on my end.
I also tested this with debuginteractions enabled and the "ghostify" command and the result is always the same: mummy-curse ghosts look like black smears and drowned ghosts are almost white.

That doesn't look 'normal' to me. That's sort of like how sims look when they turn pitch black if something happens to their skintone.
I've not had this happen as I don't play ghosts.

Yeah it does look like a sim with a missing skin tone, that turned into a ghost.

That's what I thought, too, initially but as it was consistent throughout all of my saves and with 5 mummy curse ghosts in total (2 YAs, 1 adult and two toddlers) I began to have my doubts.
In the meantime I tested it with a completely new EA folder in Documents and imported a mummy curse ghost into SV and still the same. I then reintroduced AwesomeMod, which allowed me to kill a pre-made Sim with the curse and resurrect him via forced opportunities. He is dark brown, too, and hair is blackish. So, it is not a CC issue.
What is also weird is that sending a ghost to the dresser will now maintain the ghost shader, while before they showed as normal Sims in CAS.
I have attached some screenshots from various test saves and one I found from before the LN patch.
So, unless someone can prove otherwise I am inclined to assume that with LN EA changed the ghost shaders, unfortunately.

Do all the ghost look different?

Not really, the drowned one seems to be brighter, the in-game avatar face almost white. They all give the impression of being more transparent in a liquid kind of way. I couldn't test all types, as I do not have playables of every kind, and the "Apply Ghost Shader" in debug commands does change the Sim but not the thumbnails and the in-game avatar face.
The mummy cursed ghost is in fact the one where it is most obvious.

Different ghosts now have different shaders. Instead of just having different special effects (flames, water, electricity), they have their own unique shaders, it seems.
For example, Old Age has no transparency in the face and upper body at all, but starts to fade towards the bottom. Starvation is almost completely transparent in the skin. Mummy's Curse appears to make everything behind it look sepia-toned as well as wavy. Meteorite is very dark and deeply colored. Fire is semi-transparent. Drowning is semi-transparent.. Electrocution is semi-transparent.
Before, ghosts were pretty much all the same, but different colors and maybe with a special effect. Now, each death looks like it has its own shader to go along with it. They also seem to be tweaked so that clothing is more obvious and looks more like the ghost is wearing ghost clothing, instead of the sim as a whole having a simple transparency applied to it.

Mine don't look as bad as yours though. Meaning-
Yes, they changed the ghost shader. But yours is still broken and does not look how it is supposed to.
My guess is your graphics card cannot handle the shader properly.

Thank you, Reaverbot, and all the others. While this is somehow sad news for me, at least I am quite glad now to see that I did not imagine this. I guess I will now have to learn to live with this. But if you want you could do me another favour and post a picture of a mummy curse ghost avatar just like the one I posted in my first post, in order for me to see how much different they are. Because the in-game pictures do not seem to me to be that tragically different.

Running Sims w/no expansions and the Late Night patch The ghosts look normal to me, but I have not yet loaded DirectX 10. The fog effect is lessened from the Nvidia card but its early in the ghost game for me so I dont know if they become more clear. I only saw one but it looked like the normal ghosts. I know the unhappy undead told on themselves, but I havent seen one yet.

I killed my self sim with fire and noticed a liquid-y effect shader on him. Ghosts with obvious clothing seems less scary, but TS3 ghosts are less scary to begin with.

Heh, I suppose with sunglasses he could be, but that was just a randomly-spawned sim to test the ghost shaders.
