I don't know what kind of dog I'd like to own, but a doberman pinscher has a nasty disposition, short hair, straight ears, and is intelligent. These are all good things for a dog to have.

I love Golden Retrievers. Ours had to be put to sleep last year :-( He was 13 1/2 years old though, which is pretty good going. I don't think I'd want another one though, because I'd be constantly comparing it with him....
I'd like an Irish Setter. Mainly because they're mad - they'd get on well with me! :-D

I treat every animal as an individual so there is no dog breed I like more than any other... but I inherited two chihuahuas and I got to know them so I love them. However I also love the wild mouse I don't know who lives behind my computer.
... and also the fruit rats who live in the garden :luff:
All mammals are great, I just want to tickle their furry little tummies!

A few years ago I lived in a flat with a wild mouse living in there. My Mum thought I was nuts for not poisoning or trapping it, but I grew pretty fond of it! :-) I named it Gerald.

I love golden retrievers! I've had a Collie, Old English sheepdog, and currently have a Jack Russell.
I think my favourite breed would be greyhound/whippet, but in general, love all dogs, but greyhounds are like gentle giants.

Retrievers are okay, but I think I was put off of them as a child because the neighbor's golden retriever would always try to retrieve me. I had many torn and stretched sleeves. (And he would eat my barbie dolls too!)
I'm a big fan of German Shepherds, myself. My mom has owned them ever since I was a kid, and only in the last few years has not had one. I think I mostly like them for their smarts. There one of the most intelligent breeds out there, which make them great pets and watch dogs.

I like goldens, but I'm more of a labrador girl - I'm biased...I have a lab and a lab x mastiff. I've owned a few mutts and worked with a huge number of different breeds and there aren't many I don't like. I'm not a fan of some of the small breeds - chihuahuas, poms, pekes & some of the other small fluffies, - and I've met very few nice ones. I'm not sure though how much of that is down to innate personality traits and how much due to them being small 'cutesy' dogs owned by people who allow them to run riot. Give me a big, slobbery mastiff any day

SP - if you're going to look at a pure bred and aren't necessarily set on a Dobe, another good breed is the Rhodesian Ridgeback. I've had a couple of ridgie crosses and they are fantastic. They are very protective of 'their person', but happy to let friends and family in, very smart, good to train.
My old boy was ridgie x mastiff and he was as gentle as a kitten, but would have protected me with his life. I actually had problems with him initially, because he was too protective when I took him out. If my mum & dad were with us too it was okay, but if we were alone he wouldn't let anyone near me. After I got sick he looked after me as well - every time I fell or collapsed he'd go and get my mum or drop his head so that I could lean on him to get myself up again.

I'm not actually sure to be honest, but she's definately at least 3 years old in human years.

^ Well let me clarify "crazy". Brittanys absolutely need lots of excercise, and they need a "job" to do. They are working dogs who are bred to hunt all day, and if they don't have an outlet for all this energy they can end up completely loopy. When you give a Brittany the kind of excercise they need, you've got (imho :P) the best companion a person could ask for. With the right care the breed is calm, friendly and incredibly trainable. :)

Oh god, is that true! We have a huge fenced-in yard, and mine will spend a few hours a day chasing geckos, mice, frogs, squirrels, moths, birds-- anything that's not a dog or a human, really.. heh.
It's her "job" to keep the yard free from pests.
Where is the best place to buy or adopt a Golden Retriever?
Check a shelter first. They're a popular breed, so there's a good chance a shelter will have one, or at least a mix. If you live in the US, try the ASPCA or another no-kill shelter.
But before you decide to adopt one, be sure you can care for a golden's needs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kI4EbABtJQ0 There's a video with Golden basics.

That's innate personality traits. Some family friends keep a pair or pekenese as guard dogs for their yard, because they make a lot of noise when strangers come by.

Some family friends keep a pair or pekenese as guard dogs for their yard, because they make a lot of noise when strangers come by. Ah, but there is a difference between barking when strangers come by and yapping incessantly, and nobody should allow their dog to become a vicious little #&@*, which is the only way to describe a lot of the fluffies I've had the (dis)pleasure of dealing with *rolls eyes*

Edit: Oops, late. I agree with longears
In my personal experience, there are two main kinds of annoying dog: idiotic, rude Labradors (whose owners think it's "funny" or "play" when their 90 lb dog leaps all over 100 lb me) and nasty little toy dogs. I've met some truly mean, obnoxious, vicious little dogs. More often than I've met large dogs of the same personality. Some people think their Chihuahua/Pom/Peke/whatever is cute little "baby" and this apparently justifies doing no training or socialization. Meanwhile their dog is running around, leaping at me, snarling and barking, all while they coo to their dog "Oh Tiffany, you are so cute! Are you my baby? Are you? Yes you are!"
Of course, I've met some absolutely lovely small dogs as well (and there's a Lab in my neighbourhood whom I would take home in a heartbeat), but from my experience that's the reason to dislike small dogs, not so much the barking.
