I'm about to take on my first Sims 3 modding project: Retexturing a hair. It's a Peggyzone free hair and I'm trying to make it less...dark.
The question is which of the texture maps do I want to work with, main, specular or control?

You can lighten up the main texture to light up the whole hair.
The specular is the lightning that is displaying when rotating arround a sim.

When retexturing a hair most of the time you will work with all three but if you're simply trying to lighten the hair (like with brighten and contrast) then the main (aka the diffuse) is what you should go after.

iirc, you may also want to alter the vertex extra data on the mesh - the same way you would when making a new hair, to avoid it going black ingame.

The good news is that the hair shows up in the game after retexing.
The bad news is that it makes my Sims bald.

You don't have to do that when retexturing and it's impossible on Peggy meshes anyway.
Did you save your textures as .DDS?

Yes, I did.
The hair did not show up at all.
