I'm trying to modify a mesh using warlokk's magnets. But when I try to use the unimesh objx importer I get to following error. Is there a way to fix this, or should I just trash it?

That message would indicate that somehow you are trying to restore information from a file that has more or less groups than were saved. Not the way that plug-in was designed to work. What it is trying to do is to save everything that is special in one file and later restore that. You can get the basic mesh data into poser using the .obj format, tweak it with the magnets and then bring it back in, and that is when you would restore the other stuff from the .objx file.
But you have to follow the steps in order, and the file you are restoring to needs all of the parts that were there when you saved the .objx. Your screenshot did not show some of the MilkShape panels, so I can only guess at things. But most of the warlokk stuff was done with separate top/bottom groups. If you saved just a top and are trying to bring it back into top and bottom at the same time, that would be a group mismatch.
Review the steps, or post them here and let us review them for you. You probably just did something out-of-sequence that can be redone in the proper order to allow you to get your tweaks back into MilkShape and then into the game.

Thanks for your reply. I deleted everything out of frustration, so I have to start over. But the mesh in question did have 2 alpha layers which I deleted. I will try again without deleting any mesh parts. Thanks again :)

If the file has alpha layers you either regroup all meshgroups into one or make seperate files for each meshgroup.
Keep in mind that watever method you use you always export the regrouped meshes or the seperate files with the unimeshexporter first.
That new file you reopen and export as objx and obj file.
Also make sure both are named the same!

I recognize it is an awkward process, but the .obj file format does not support a lot of the data necessary to have a working, animated mesh. So what the tool does is split the data into two halves, allowing you to work on the part that does fit into the .obj format, and then recombine those two halves later. So the order and the names is important so that things get put back together properly. Close or almost is not an option for a computer.

Loving the method, also used it on sims 3 GEOMs and it still works great )
Editing the obj files with Poser, then bring them back.
