View Full Version : Running Sims 2 EPs on External

Hallo all.

So I have a dual boot Ubuntu/Windows XP laptop and I just stole all the HD space from Windows to put on my Ubuntu (main) system because I figured I only need a couple Gigs to play Sims. Which is pretty much the purpose of having the whole (Windows) system at all.

Now I have an Amazon Gift Card and I was thinking I might pick up a few EPs, because I'm kinda bored of Base Game and they're relatively inexpensive. Buuuut there's the problem of hard drive space. That system is pretty much bare (uninstalled everything that wasn't integral to the system, moved all my documents over here or onto my external.) I tell you all this so you'll understand that it's not really doable to clear out my HD and put the games on there.

So that brings me to my query: Has anyone attempted to run TS2 and expansions off an external HD (USB 2.0 preferably) and was it successful? I assume I'd have to move the Original game over too but I don't mind doing that. There's been a few discussions on this but nothing conclusive and I hoped someone might have tried it since then. I really don't want to buy the EPs and then have it not work and have wasted my money.

So if anyone has attempted this can you let me know how it worked, any bugs, how game performance was, and anything specific you needed to do during installation?

Also if anyone knows a Windows emulator for Linux that runs Sims 2 that'd be awesome to know. I've found not much success on that front, but it's worth asking, I think.

So yeah, any help would be massively appreciated.

Thanks ever so in advance.

There's been a few discussions on this but nothing conclusive and I hoped someone might have tried it since then.I recall a few times this very question has been answered, they didn't help answer your questions?

From searching, I get all these from 1st 2-3 pages of results:

The scenario is successful only if the drive letters don't change when you unplug and replug the USB cable in. As the shortcuts and registry entries are hardcoded to use the drive letter when you first installed it to the external.

Sims has always been programmed for the PC, all other platforms don't run the PC versions well when using emulators; not on a Mac, nor on Linux (any flavor). They can start, sure, but not worth the hassle IMO. Plus, all the tools are for PC. :)

I was actually hoping for someone to say 'I've done it and it worked/ didn't work" as opposed to 'it should work, in theory as long as ...". And I've seen some problems that seem to come along with EPs which make me a little nervous.

Though in retrospect I suppose the chances of someone who has coming across this are slim, so I'll just have to figure it out from what's out there.

Thank you very much. :)

And as far as emulators I kind of assumed that was the case but I thought I'd throw it in anyway. That's too bad though.

Well, truth be told, people who had done it successfully and has no problems don't hang out in Help (mostly). :)

Those that posted the question, either was afraid of the 'it should work, in theory as long as ..." statement and didn't try or did try and had no issues to come back here to confirm or deny if it works either way.

I have succesfully loaded Sims2, now I am trying to load Nightlife and I am 92% into it and I have this error message: 'TSData\Res\NeighborhoodTemplate\D001_Lot20' from the media. It gives the option to retry or cancel, and when I retry, it gets stuck again.

Sounds like there's a problem with your CD / DVD. Try cleaning it. I'll get you some instructions... hang on.
