View Full Version : Rate my Sim's Room

I consider myself to be a pretty good decorator for my sims' homes, but I want to hear what you guys think, and I want to see your sims' homes. So, it works like this : you post a picture (or a few) of a room in your sim's house, and the next person gives a rating out of 10, as well as their opinion, and some pictures of their sim's house. So, let's begin.

Here's the kitchen of my simself's house :

I love this idea, I really want to see everybody showing off the meticulously decorated rooms we made for out pixelated dollies, I'm always lazy to post stories, but some shots should be easy enough to lure me in. I'll come back later when I finish my renovation project.
Oh, I forgot the rule, here comes the review:
I love the two luxurious large curtains. Their dark brown background combined with yellow wooden furniture definitely bring comfort and warmth to this dining room while some green add refreshment to the atmosphere. I don't know whether you want to emphasize the moderness of the fridge, oven and dish-washer, but it seems metal is a little out-of-place. I'd love to re-color them to marble or wood to match the counter.
Rating: |nervous| 8/10

7/10.

The layout is fine, and the furniture lots alright together. I always think it's a good thing when people take the time to find pieces that look good together. but but the colors seem a little thrown together. The curtains, chair, and rug chair a pattern: that is a no no. Maybe try a different pattern, or a fabric - with the darker color of the curtains being the main channel for the palette. Also, the living chair - the stripes and victorian combo are also a no no. Trying using the stripes for the major part of the couch, and chose a plain pattern for the arms, try something else for the pillows.

Basically, the only issue is conflicting patterns on the chair (maybe the rug) and the over usage of the one pattern. I guess finding a good balance of everything in the room, from color to placement, will do the room good.

Maybe I should post something...

I absolutely love the last room, Matrix. The purple curtain seems a little random and out of place, but everything else is just lovely. The 'clutter' is really great as well. 9/10 there!

I agree - I'll play too! I'll pop back later with pics laters.

Laters ....

This is a modern house I built for my own game - there is so much CC in it, it couldn't really be uploaded anywhere and I wouldn't expect it to suit a lot of people, it's where my fisher sim lives, (he can stand on the dock outside his house and fish :)) it's very open plan with lots of glass partitions and built to maximise that view of Stoney Falls (my fave lot).

To be honest I love everyone's rooms so far :) I won't rate them out of ten, I'd feel really 'odd' doing that, as art is so subjective, I'll just say that each and every one is imaginative and has a strong feeling of home to it, and that's what I like. I hope more peeps post on this thread as I love seeing what people do 'in their own homes' as it were.

You have very good taste. Normally, I'm not a fan of modern, but you've managed to make it feel a bit cozy and warm. Great job! I give it an 8/10 just because I think the way the second floor hangs diagonally over the first floor looks a bit unnatural. And I'm not fond of the velvet ropes.
But overall, nice job!

I think it would be interesting to compare how different people would redecorate the same room(s) in the same house. Maybe pick an EA house and see what people could accomplish using only EA items.

Considering my method of redecorating is "YAY! CC! CLUTTER!" I don't know how that would go xD

Actually, the curtain isn't purple lol
Yes, the lighting in the game is THAT flawed.

matrix54, The piano room looks beautiful! Although I think the television room could be larger, because it looks as though all the things are stuffed in there, more space would be comfortable, I think.

I completely agree! The only reason it's so small was because it was part of a bigger room, but I made the other side (a dining room and kitchen) was quite big, so I had to make (force) the space work.

If this becomes an EA content challenge, sure I'm up for it too, but it'd need some organisation and would we have to seek permission to do it? We'd need impartial 'judges', and a set of rules, no? I mean we don't want it to turn into a bun-fight lol!

Things that I want to steal from juansfalcin:
*The villa surrounded by pool
*The dreamy crescent bathtub
*The marble bookselves-tv combo
*The proud, satisfying, lived-my-life-to-the-fullest lady.
I'm impressed that you go great length to details like painting matched ceiling, and did you really build that palace, *_* it's like a whole city could live there and my biggest achievement so far is to build a cubic on 10x10.

Hey, thanks!

The bathtub is from Simcredible (http://sims3.simcredibledesigns.com/). They have awesome objects there (and I'm so proud because they're brazillian :3).

Since there's some pics with TVs, I'm not sure which one are you talking about, but if it's the one with the dude working out, it's a set from store, actually.

The lady has actually a very sad background (had to leave her successfull actress career in China when her husband died in Shang Simla war and start again in Twinbrook's TV studio), but now she has a gay friend and they party a lot. LOL

The palace is actually based on another talented simmer, but I builded it from scratch. It's my biggest acchievment as a simmer, sadly enough if I load it/try to play with the family that lives there my game runs at a extremely slow pace, so it's just there as a pretty thing to look at map view. :(

I was hoping for a thread like this here. I love seeing other simmers pictures, steal some great ideas for my sim homes. I am still learning to decorate, but don't get inspiration until my sim moves in the house. I love building, my sims move a lot in their lifetime. :) All my homes are small and cozy, but here are a few of my favorite decorating/building ideas.

From my old Seafarers lot, the home needs lots of repair and love (personally I love it this way).

OMG, lewis, your houses are so elegant, I wish I could live among those sentimentally worn, faded and shabby wooden handicrafts in Seafarers, they make the ambiance so intimate and inviting. In contrast, the tasteful combination of contemporary and refreshing pattern in Caspa Lotta creates a dynamic and unique aesthetic. 10/10. :D

Oh my, you are so sweet, noxnoxnox. I try for a modern design but it ends up contemporary or Retro. I do enjoy my grungy lots.

Lysfire, I am enjoying that cozy apartment. Now I am inspired to do up a shell for Oahu. I never created an apt. from a shell, I always build some type of brownstone or complex. Just like you, I always make a closet for the master bedroom suite. I love your closet system and that hallway is gorgeous. Yes, I am stealing your ideas.

Great job everyone, keep them coming!

Im very happy that I dont have your houses in my neighbourhood. As a simmer with the hidden ' the grass is always greener on the other side' trait ( or curse if you prefer), I would be forced to shove my sim family around even more then I do now. Making the live miserable of the innocent sims who are thrown out on the curbs in front of their awesome decorated houses.

http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/6052/screenshot81k.jpg

The first room is honestly, a disaster. First of all, the powder blue walls clash with the red booth and the red carpet. I would suggest painting the wall grey or just white, so that it ties in well with the furniture and doesn't call too much attention to itself. That red carpet needs to be ripped out, as it gives the room a cheesy 70's motel look. The picture above the booth doesn't really suit the style of the room, try a picture of a city or something along those lines. The red and black dining chairs, while daring, look a bit random. The dining table also looks of place in a modern room. The clutter on the table looks like it was just thrown together; I would suggest just having one item on the center of the table and leave it at that. Overall, 2/10.

The second room is a breath of fresh air after the first room. I love the whole classy, elegant look that you have made for this room. The columns provide an impressive entrance to the room, without being ostentatious. The white couch and chairs are a bit boring; spice them up! Try one pattern for the couch and another for the chairs. The table in the left corner of the room looks lonely. Try hanging a mirror above it or putting a plant, lamp, or a vase on top of the table. The grand piano serves as a very nice focal point for the room, and its position is perfect. Overall, 7/10.

The third room is busy, busy, busy. It looks like it was tossed together and the whole room looks unsettled. First of all, if you're not building a bathroom or a nursery, ditch the powder blue paint; it just doesn't fit the room. The loveseats are boooring; a simple striped pattern would be much better. The windows are nice and big, but the curtains are boring. The TV stand and the coffee table are tied together well, but the potted plant next to the TV has a hideous vase. The rug is all wrong, and none of its colors work with the room. The picture above the TV is nice, but it doesn't look quite right above the TV. The ceiling mounted lights are a disaster, and an eyesore; take them away and put a nice chandelier in their place instead. Overall, 3/10.

The fourth room is much better. The dark green walls make the room look settled and mellow, perfect for the bedroom. The bedspread is tied in well with the walls, and it goes well with the black headboard and black furniture. The pictures above the bed give the room a homey feel. The mirror is awkward and the drapes are all wrong, black would be much better. The rug ties in well with the ottoman in front of the bed. Overall, 6/10.

I'm getting that relaxed modern spanish vacation home vibe from this room, and I like it. Normally, I'm not a fan of white walls, and this is no exception; try a warm shade of brown or tan. The furnishings for the sitting area are a bit sparse, but its not the end of the world. The fireplace looks a little too small; a taller unit should do the trick. The coffee table is very nice looking, and goes well with the black furniture. The large rug really helps with making the room feel more finished, sort of hiding the extra space (in a good way). The kitchen has a very modern, yet warm feel to it. The wood on the cabinets and the refrigerator looks nice. The dining area is very nice, but again, a little sparse, and a chandelier would really help with defining the space. The glass dining table really emphasizes the modern them of the room, and the dining chairs are an excellent match. The windows are great and the fountain is beautiful. The loft area on the second floor is very nice, I like this feature a lot. Overall, you did a fantastic job with this room! 8/10.

While I agree with a lot of the points you (not all :p) The colors of BOTH of those walls is NOT blue. The lighting is weird, I swear. I think It happens when you set the lamps to white, I'm not sure, but I made them white.

The main reason why some of the pieces don't fit (like the glass table in room 1) is because all of the furniture is from EA, and if you want a certain look, you have settle for concept rather than what the piece actually would be - especially when it comes to curtains. While other pieces get released after time, for those 'at the moment' times, it is what it is. I try to make it work.

Thank you. I shall take what you've said and use it. ;)

What happened to this thread? I thought it was really neat. Right after I post something, the darn thread crashes and burns faster than Charlie Sheen's career

I really liked the idea of choosing a room in a EA house and have everyone redecorate it. Sometimes it's useful to see other designs for the same room as someone might pick up a detail that you may missed or improved on something that you may have had trouble designing.

Okay, first some feedback:

Ryanhas2dogs: I'm a big fan of wood patterns, so I really like the warm and cozy feeling your kitchen has. It's not too cramped which is good, the proportions are spacious. I personally would probably use more varied patterns but then again I know many people like rooms with a clear "theme". I would also do something about the roof - use some sort of paint/masonry/woodern pattern also there. But overall your room is very harmonic and looks like a real kitchen in a middle class home could be.

matrix54: I like your pictures. Especially the two latter ones. Your living room looks very lived-in, it's stylish but not over-done. I like the patterns you chose there. It's small, that's true, and with Sims it's not always practical (at least my sims bump into each other all the time unless the rooms are actually big). But for a single sim or a couple it looks perfect! And the bedroom is just absolutely beautiful. It looks both cool and cozy. The clutter fits in perfectly. Well done, I could sleep well and have nice dreams in a room like that.

Sprue: I like the basic idea you have but I would add some clutter, more patterns etc. Then again, I use too much clutter and if your room is supposed to look minimalistic, it's fine as it is.

fairycake89: Very lovely rooms. Such a beautiful tone of pink/beige you chose. Looks fresh and airy, like a modern house for a fairy. The only thing I'm not sure about is the brick/paint pattern on the living room wall. I would probably change it to something that doesn't have a divided middle. But all in all, very pretty rooms you have there - and they also look functional.

juansfalcin: You do have many pics so I just choose a few to comment on. Your bathroom is very nice, looks luxurious and plush. I like the earthen colours combined with modern style. The wooden kitchen could perhaps use some different tones of brown. Maybe just darken or lighten some bits? The jazz club? pic is very nice. Looks shady and atmospheric.

lewisb40: What could I say? Your pics are stunning. Both homes have such a unique and clear theme and follow it flawlessly. There's just the right amount of clutter to make it look comfy and lived-in but not cramped. Your usage of patterns is amazing, I really admire it. Everything looks natural and like it just belongs there. Wow.

lisfyre: Very nice. I have always problems with blue, I just can't use it. But in your house blue fits so well together with the wooden tones. My favourite it the picture of that desk and hallway, they look very stylish and not too posh. The bedroom is the only one I personally don't really like. Maybe it's the pattern on the walls that doesn't really fit, IMHO. I would put some art on the walls, too. But overall your house looks very good indeed.

Miko09: Great work. Looks like a really elegant restaurant. Once again, I have to mention the patterns: They fit in so nicely. I love that you have also made the roof wooden. It adds to the general atmosphere.

Finally, some pics of my newest house (not available here, just at my blog is someone likes it). The house really has no theme this time. It's a renovated colonial home, made for a posh sim family of mine. The "lady of the house" is very snobbish and also neurotic, she desperately tries to keep everything perfect and nice -or at least to appear so. Kind of like Hyacinth Bucket. So I over-decorated the house a bit, to make it look like her uptight personality.

Kitchenette069, you've pulled off a very modern, formal look. It is clean and elegant. I give you a 8/10 also. But only to leave room at the top. I'll be more inclined to move the scores up if there isn't anything that appeals to me more. It's all very subjective.

Darn...I was trying so hard to be the first to post my renovations

KirsiF:Your rooms look so warm and inviting! I really like it. There's only one thing that's bugging me: the swirly green pattern on a few of the curtains. For some reason it doesnt mesh well with the rest of the room. I would say try toning down the white in the pattern and you have a winner!

AngelicScot: Your powder blue room is amazing! Although it may be the a different house lol, I still like what you've done with the place, especially with the plants behind the couch. I'm going to have the same here about the patterns that exist on the chairs and curtains. It's just a little too bold and contrasting for a room that has such a soft glow. Of course, this is all just my opinion. Other than that, really good job!

fairycake89: I really love what you've done with the place. That deep red-almost-chocolate looks really nice against the white furniture. I like the fact that the kitchen is now a central hub for that whole area.

kittenette069: I think you did pretty good job for someone who "sucks at designing". The only thing I would point out is the curtains. I dont know if they look too great overlapping.

matrix54: What do you mean polished turd? I would give that turd to some of my favorite sims to live in. I really like the bookcase enclosure. Nice job!

Now it's my turn. I tore down the kitchen wall for a more open design and I kept almost all of the orignial doors and windows. Hope ya like!

AngelicScot I really love your CAsting and how you've done the curtains in particular. Really very homey and comfy looking. If there is anything I don't like, I'd say it was the long, brown planter, the plants spikeyness and the colour of the planter seem to detract from the cosiness of the room. Overall I really like the colourscheme and the lived in feeling and as I said before, it's really pretty.

Kittenette069 I like the way you've opened up the space with the use of the tall windows and bringing the outside inside with the plants you've used. You're also not afraid of leaving some space in the room, which I think is a good thing - I like what you did with the drapes, I used them myself! But!! On some windows there are too many of them and they loose their impact, less is more sometimes. Overall it's nicely modern and feels stongly connected to the garden.

Matrix54 Cute and almost Victorian in feel, very liveable and realistic - but *gulp* .. personally I think the room could use a pop of colour, even just a paler cream colour, maybe in the sofas to lift the browns But that's personal choice and doesn't detract from your talent for layout.

Miko09 Fresh and visually interesting! Nicely done! Some really nice CASting too. The space feels workable and there is a nice flow between the spaces.

Ryanhas2dogs I like this one, with the brick work and the modern furnishings it has a Loft apartment feel. Very slick. An interesting take on a yucky house!

My attempts with the planters was to bring pops of terra cotta colour to prevent a monochromatic feeling in the room.

But thank you everyone for your kind remarks.

AngelicScot: I love that deep blue pattern! I'm normally not a fan of strong patterns, because I think they draw the attention from a room as a whole. You however manage to strike a balance so that it complements the room instead. All of your rooms have a cozy, lived in vibe and its very nice.

Miko09: You're amazing. You managed to use a color I hate for walls, floors and furniture and turn it into this gorgeous creation. I can't think of a single thing I dislike. Your living room and kitchen have both a showcase and homey feel to them. And you did it all by blasting only one wall. I'm so jealous.

Matrix54: How can you call this a turd? I wish I could make rooms like this. I would've used a slightly browner color palette, but that's just my preference. I love the old-fashioned, formal feel to your rooms. Incredible job.

Elias943: *Squeal!!* Your space is snazzy! To me, it gives off a hot, dark and modern feel. Something like this would be perfect for my vamps, and maybe some other possible supernatural sims that are coming down the pipe. I like seeing spaces like this, its really cool.

Ryanhas2dogs: Your space has a modern, hip feel to it. Like it could be Don Lothario's pad. I wouldn't have thought brick would be good inside a house, but you make it look awesome. Your rooms have a nice energy to them and I wouldn't change anything.

Fairycake89: I like modern, open spaces and that's why your rooms appeal to me so much. The colors are warm and well thought out, and it makes your rooms look very inviting. I love them! I don't see anything I would do differently.

Thank you all for your advice and for taking time out to critique my room. You guys are all professionals. :) As for the curtains, well I was trying to experiment. EA doesn't seem to have complete sets for alot of things, including their curtains. I'd say more, but I'll just end up ranting and I can do that in another thread. Goodbye for now.

I know that it's too much red but i just can't resist to this combination (Red/Black)

Thank you very much for your words! :)
Glad you liked it! :D

Sunset Valley Central Park Renovation

http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/8477/screenshot185q.jpg

People, often, do too many interiors for homes, rather than an interior/exterior for community lots. While it's not a bad thing, a real challenge for any designer is a public venue - giving it form and funtion.

Requirements
-Only EA content. NO EXCEPTIONS - except unlocks. THAT IS ALL!
-Must fit in with the layout of the rest of the neighborhood. Where ever there's a crosswalk that is NOT at an intersection you MUST use an entrance. Like the entrance to city hall and the school. Others are fully optional.
-Must have a place to eat, a place for children and a statue of the mayor, like in the original park, and a place to use the bathroom.

-A place to fish is optional - but no need for spawners.

I though JUST designing a room was too easy. So I raised the difficulty. I'm treating you like real designer, but not really.

This may be a little more work than you might want to do, but you can open a new Sunset Valley neighborhood. Redeco the park, take pictures, and then delete the town when you are done.

I am not sure what this means. :/

matrix54
15th Aug 2011, 8:18 PM
There are crosswalks in front of the School and City hall. If the park is closed off, these MUST be used to enter the park. For example, if you turned the entire park into a maze (feel free to use the idea, BTW), two of the entrances should be located at these locations. Of course, you can use more, but these 2 are mandatory. The only way around this is to have the ENTIRE completely open to the street. :)

I still have my renovation to do, which I should probably get down by tonight. I like what you've done with your park! It looks like a 5 star resort. I could live in that park if I had to. All I would need is a blanket and a well placed vending machine lol

I also like your park matrix! Post more pictures of it!

I don't like the way it looks from the ground. I supposed I'll get some later. (I've had a really busy day, which messed up my sleep entirely. Need... rest...)

Unlike Ryanhas2dogs, where is looks good to most any angle. It really does have that luxury resort feel without it being tacky. Nail right on the head. :D
