View Full Version : Which languages do you have actual, honest-to-deity-of-choice satisfactory communicative (or extensive theoretical) proficiency in?

"I know a bit of..." and "I've dabbled in..." doesn't count.
Mine are Danish, English and Russian, with noticeably higher proficiency in Danish and English than in Russian.

Also, how do you define "knowing" a language? Personally, I like my teacher's definition of "being able to carry on a non-technically specific conversation without significant gaps in vocabulary".

Well, my French used to be pretty good. Oddly enough, I was better at reading specific, technical academic texts and also historical texts than every day French. This is because I have done quite a lot of research that used French sources. However, I have not been doing that on a regular basis for over 10 years and I'd have to say now that I'm rusty. Can still make myself understood though and I can watch some French telly and understand what's going on - a lot of the time they go too fast for me though.

English, and once upon a time I could converse well enough in French, but now I struggle to get a sentence together.

But I don't have a deity-of-choice, so I might be lying. Probably am. Probably speak Klingon.
