View Full Version : Where to buy pets to add to a family?

Does anyone know if there's a way I can buy a pet to add into a family? I went to the pet store but it didn't have that option to purchase a pet like sims 2 did.

Horses you can buy from the Equestrian Center, animals in general you can adopt from neighbors if they're holding an adoption (check the newspaper/computer) or from the animal shelter (also newspaper/computer). That aspect is a lot like adopting a shelter pet in Sims 2. Also if you see a wild horse/unicorn/stray animal in the neighborhood and you befriend it you can do a Move In request on it like with a human.

There's three gnomes in the Miscellaneous Pet buymode section that from what I gather either attract or repel strays and wild animals, depending on what you set them to.

You can adopt one by phone or computer. Also, sometimes sims have animals to sell; this shows as a house marker in map view.

Horses can be bought at the equestrian center.

And, of course, you can go into edit town and make em in CAS, and merge them with your household.

But there are no sims 2 style pet sale display objects, no.

Yeah, I'm glad that there is no pet sale, we only adopt them and if we no longer want to keep them, we can put them up for adoption. I also heard that you are paid when your pets got adopted so it'll make us look like pet seller, still reluctant to give up any of my pets for testing that out.

i think sometimes pets are for sale from neighbors and those cost money.

I neglected my horse's social bar to see what would happen in regards to the social worker.
Well, if you get that warning, get to it! It's only hours before your pets will be taking away, ALL of them (except the caged ones).

Anyhow, I tought it was funny that when you try to re-aply to addopt a pet from the shelter, you get a message you won't be able to for quite a while, but you can just go out and buy a new horse if you want to.
A that almighty Dol.. er Simolean.

Is that the lot with the special icon over it for pet adoptions? When I play I was going to try that out.

Ah, thanks. I've tried to do this in my game but nobody's ever home when I try to go over :( I've edited my post to reflect that this isn't a free option.

Yes. If you don't feel like scanning the map the computer and I believe newspaper will also tell you if anyone has any. You still have to go find them to actually adopt though.

That may be a lot easier with Awesomemod, you could just turn tracking on for the household so you could find one of the members.

When my sims neighbours had pets to give away it was called an adoptathon rather than a sale and my sim adopted them for free.

My sim just used the newspaper option "Adopt a Pet from Shelter" and that was it. Pretty much like going to the shop except she didn't go and she didn't pay any money. The pet was delivered to her a bit later and it was also possible to customise it's look.

Yeah, Adopt a Pet from Shelter is pretty much exactly like Pets 2 adoptions, where someone drives it out to your house.

You can use the phone for adoptions as well.

Random households have the "pet adoption" icon over the houses. I've had two different sim households adopt pets from two different households holding a pet adoption. Neither time did it cost my sim any simoleans.

It also appears that it may be random, similar to how babies showed up at various households in the beginning. My sim adopted a kitten but the kitten wasn't anywhere near the household and he had to go find it, then he took off for home without it. It retains the name of it's original household and it doesn't show any parents but then I've not had a litter of puppies or kittens in-game and don't know if they normally show that relationship.

Last night I played a custom world briefly and spent about a sim day placing and playing sim families from my bin before moving on the the next family to place in the world. On day two, a family I had placed the day before had the pet adoption icon over their house. They did not have a pet when I left their household the day before.

When my sim got there, there was a white horse and two white foals, both of whom were up for adoption. This house has no barn or any other way to care for a horse. :wtf:

So wait... I can't get a pet at the pet store? What's the point of the pet store then?

I moved a sim and a cat (who wasn't pregnant) out of my household and later the same day I got a message that the cat had a kitten which I could adopt. Fastest pregnancy ever.

As for adopting pets and buying horses. I wonder how often new pets will be generated. Hopefully you won't have to adopt/buy most of them before new ones appear...some of them have less than desirable traits lol.

Sells pet items, some of which you can't get in buy mode.

Not too much point though ;) I think all the items are variants of buy mode, i.e. no different functionality. Haven't been there recently though, should go back and check :p

I placed the register inside the pet store and it gave me the option of "buy objects" but this is broken and thus I can't buy anything in the pet store. Does this work for you Srikandi?

I still find it extremely odd that there doesn't seem to be a way for you to actually make the pet you WANT. You have to rely on the shelter and a randomized set of animals...

I was hoping that the pet store would put you into CAS/CAH/CAP and let you 'design' your pet...

The only way of getting your perfect pet is to do it outside the household and "merge" them together? Doesn't that seem a little roundabout? Plus, you can't create puppies/kittens/foals in CAH... Ugh!

You can edit any pet's collar and coat from the regular click menu.

If you want to change more than that: TestingCheatsEnabled True, then shift-click the pet and Edit In CAS.

Well, I tend to start my sims off on a small lot with only the money that comes with the family. They can't afford that hydronator or whatever it is called that cleans the fleas from the poor pets. I lined the back yard with those things so my sim's cat comes in contact with the many flea-ladden pets in town, then off to the pet shop with the cat. Hopefully it will work on a community lot. I haven't tried it yet.

Great way to find that love of your life too. My sim has fallen for a CAS created guy that seems to hang around the pet shop alot. Other than that, no other reason to have it really. Aesthetic maybe.
