Update - 12/17/2011
The Cat / Dog Vet career is ready to test. Sorry it took so long, I could probably add a bunch of excuses but I'm too lazy to bother.
If I could get someone or multiple someones to play though it and point out any errors, improvements, etc. it would really help and would greatly appreciate it :D . There are two branches - Cat Vet and Dog Vet which addes to the complexity. I added some opportunities but they aren't showing up. I may just remove them, but I'll look at them some more first to see if I made some errors (well, I most likely did  ).
You can use Nraas Master Controller to select career levels and force promotions. Just select MC / Intermediate / Careers. The "Level" Option will change career levels. If you want to force a promotion, change the "Performance" to "100" and at the end of the next shift Sim will be promoted.
Final career level breakdown:
1. Pooper Scooper
2. Vet Technician
3. Vet Assistant
4. Spay/Neuter Technician
-- Branch --
Cat
5. General Practicioner
6. Behavioral Specialist
7. Dentist
8. Ophthalmologist
9. Internal Medicine
10. Feline Specialist
Dog
5. General Practicioner
6. Behavioral Specialist
7. Dentist
8. Ophthalmologist
9. Internal Medicine
10. Canine Specialist
Game config: "Pets" EP, "Equestrian Center" rabbithole, Any world works as long as you add the rabbithole to it.
I'm going to go ahead and start on the Exotic and Equine Vet careers.
----------------------------------------------------
Original from 10/30/2011
I was researching the Veterinarian career and it's about ten times more varied than being a human doctor because of all the species and specialties (especially if you specialize in exotic species). So I got the idea of splitting it up. But I'd like some feedback about what might work better. Especially with titles.
The full time careers will match the Medical career with uniforms, hours and pay. I'm not sure if I'm going to add opportunities... they'll take a lot of time to add and test.
Rabbit hole will be the equestrian center (mainly because it is animal oriented, but also to relieve routing in and out of rabbitholes by splitting up the population).
Also, I'd like some ideas about adding an elementary and high school to this. They could even receive pay. All I could think of was Stable boy/girl, but I don't want the elementary school and high school to be the same.
There's no way to add clubs (after school activities) or I'd add 4H to this. Maybe in the future.
This is my rough draft so far.
Equine Vet (horses & unicorns)
1. Groomer
2. Vet Technician
3. Vet Intern
4. Nutritionist
5. General Practicioner
6. Sports Medicine
7. Dentist
8. Ophthalmologist
9. Internal Medicine
10. World Renowned Surgeon
Exotic Animals (misc small pets)
1. Pooper Scooper
2. Vet Technician
3. Vet Intern
4. Nutritionist
5. Fish Specialist
6. Reptile Specialist
7. Mammal Specialist
8. Avian Specialist
9. Wildlife Specialist
10. World Renowned Zoologist
Part Time - Animal Rescue
1. Tree Climber (rescue cats/birds from trees)
2. Colony Management (feed stray cats/dogs/horses)
3. Trap/Release (spay/neuter & relocate)
Part Time - Groomer
1. Pooper Scooper
2. Bather
3. Stylist
Elementary / High School
Stable Boy / Girl - paid position. Very low pay.

To be honest, I think 4 different vet careers is a bit extreme. Not that it's not realistic, just that it's a lot of careers for one thing. I think all of the EA careers could be more specialized and would also break down into different careers easily. I think perhaps maybe just combining the 4 major ones would be better, especially since some of the lower levels are very similar. I do however love the part time careers and think those should be kept. Maybe have the rescue team working out of the police department, kind of like the Animal Cops. I also think opportunities would be much appreciated. Somehow, a career without them would feel a tad incomplete. I know it's a lot of work but it would definitely be worth it in the end!
I little humor in the titles might be amusing: Pooper Scooper instead of Kennel Cleaner (which would work pretty much across the board), etc.

I couldn't decide if I wanted one career that would branch off or four careers. Since the lower levels are similar the text would be the same so it's technically not that much more work to have four seperate careers. Truthfully, I think it will be fun to have more options as the higher levels can be more specific to certain animals. Of course, actually typing out the text is the most time consuming part of creating a career so I am creating more work for myself, no denying that.
I will look into adding opportunities. When I get a package put together I could ask for testers in this forum and see if anyone wants to help review them.
Pooper Scooper! Perfect :-) Any more?

OMG!! TYSM! I love you for beginning work on this!
I think the four different careers are a good idea; it allows specialization. However, I'm thinking that it might be better to have "Vet Intern" renamed to "Vet Assistant"... that's the actual term... And intead of "World Renowned Surgeon", how about "(Type of Animal) Specialist"?
I also suggest for the part time grooming career, that it is reorganized like so:
1. Kennel Cleaner
2. Bather
3. Groomer
That way it's more of an uphill climb, rather than go from Grooming (which the job title details) then down to bathing dogs.
Another suggestion, for your Equine Vet career, maybe rename "Stable boy/girl" to Muck (the term for a mixture of horse dung and the hay that's on the stable floor) Chucker to add a little humor? It's along the same lines as "Pooper Scooper" (which I love). :D

Great idea! Maybe "Feline" and "Canine" vs. cat and dog?

I would be more than willing to test this, when you get it that far. I'm still of the mind to only have one, just because I know as a downloader, I would only want one overall career instead of having that career be so specific and then EA careers all rather vague and ambiguous. I am all about matching! But that is just a personal preference. :)
I do agree that feline, canine, and equine should all be used instead of cat, dog, and horse whichever route you decide to take!

This is a great idea! But I think groomer and animal rescue should be full-time,not part-time.

I was hoping this would come with the pets expansion pack and I was very disappointed that it didn't.
For the part positions you can approach the job title as volunteer or internship positions. Just a thought. Good luck and I'll definitely be downloading this when you're finished!

I'd also be willing to test it when you're ready! :)

I d like to have a clinic(like detectives office?) after reach lv 10 in my own house if it's possible to modding. Maybe with some oppurtunity tasks, let some of them stay in the back of clinic? Just because of their health is too risky.
Or after our sims go to that veterinarian college, let them possible to have their clinic?

This is brilliant. :D
As mentioned already I'd say 4 different types of vet is a tad more than needed. Is it possible to make two different offshoots from level 5 like with music/law enforcement/film? That way it could be companion animal and equine or exotics. As well as this I'd say that maybe a behaviourist stage would make more sense for the canine side instead of sports medicine, especially given the lack of canine sports in game? And Nutritionist is something that personally I feel all of the first three would likely have. An anesthetist could be an interesting stage?
I'd really suggest combining atleast the canine and feline careers into a companion animal vet career, from the many different vets my family have had to go to there seem to be a few basic types: Equine, Exotic, Companion and Agricultural vets. But I know that this will depend on your country and even just area of living. These are simply the four I've come across.

Great ideas, and a lot to think about. I may just do 2 or 3 careers and have them branch. Combining the lower levels of Cat/Dog then branching them off makes sense, but for the Horse and Exotic... I'll have to think about that more. I suppose Exotic could be added to Cat/Dog, but I'm not sure if there is a way to branch 3 careers - I'll have to look and see. I also wanted Exotic to to follow more of a zoologist path since when I was reading about how to become a vet that field of study sounded much more complex because of the different types of animals involved.
I would like to do a law enforcement type Pets themed career (maybine canine unit or forest ranger) but that would have to be later. I think I've got my hands full with this right now.
Having a home career like Ambitions isn't possible right now. There are no mods available for me to, well, "mod" to do that. The closest it would get to is something like the music career where the sim, upon reaching level 10, gets paid for performing concerts on his/her own time. But there aren't any specific Pets opporunities that I've seen, other than racing horses, and that's not related to be a vet.
I kind of wanted to get away from the "all-in-one" vet career because I've had problems in the past with bringing cats and birds to vets where there were dogs. Seriously, to get off topic for a moment... I went to the vet to pick up my cat who had been neutered. The vet tech told me my cat was having issues and no one could get near him. She took be to the kennel area when he was, indeed, throwing a tantrum (hissing, spitting, growling). The reason why was so effing obvious I felt like punching her in the face. They were bathing a very large dog in a basin not five feet away from where they were keeping the cats. I pointed that out to her and she looked at me like I was crazy. I never went back there again.
Keep the ideas coming! I had to work late all week but I can finally have time to start on this seriously on Saturday.

Wow that's horrid. Most more modern vets have seperate kennel and care areas - even seperate waiting rooms or divided sides.
Even the one my dog and ferrets go to, which is very small and family run, have seperate areas in the same room with a divider up. I mean, yeesh, I wouldn't take my pets there either. During one of our intro to vet nursing classes at college we needed to design a vet clinic - we got faulted if we didn't keep them seperate.
To be honest that sounds a lot more like just a bad vet than anything else.
As for the pet opportunities, could attending a game work to earn extra cash for an equine vet? They could work the race as an on hand vet. But I don't know how the extras work for careers so I'm not sure if it would be possible. Aren't there best in show opportunities/events as well? Those could work for the cat/dog vet as well. But again, no idea what the parameters to career mods are.

Well, i dont like cheating and finally i just bought my first venue.
I've seen that you can update your bars, i don't really know what is that for as far but i think 3 updates available for lots, right?
For each one update, can we get a license and set it for cat/ dogs/ exotic? So that would be like we get a progress on getting extra space for species and being available for employment by the permission of... something law-ish about pets?
And I think horses should not mixed with others.

Thanks Luckk! I like your alias :-)
I have the Equine Vet career ready for testing. I found this great XML tool called Liquid XML Studio and it makes doing XML so easy and quick. I wish I'd found it earlier.

I am not sure if I saw the final breakdown for Equine. Don't have time to test while home for the holidays however, would it be possible to do Feline/Canine on one tract and Equine on the other instead of 2 separate careers? Exotic animals is probably good for a separate career. I ask because, typically, dogs and cats go to the same type of vet. So starting small and then splitting to either general vet or large animal specialty seems a more realistic breakdown.

That does seem like a good idea. That would minimize the amount of careers and most vets are trained with both canines and felines. I'm just unsure how you would rename things.

My Male sim was promoted to a spay and neuter technician but the description didn't show. It only said he was promoted and his new wages and time. Unlike his sister, which had all the details.
Also I realized, just to advance to the fifth stage of the career, you have to max out your athletic and logic. But once you do, the requirement dropped.
the sixth branch, I'm not sure if you meant to keep it saying "Canine goggie Behavioral Specialist" and "Feline kitty Behaviorl Specialist"
Also... Cat apocalypse is spelled wrong. XD

Thanks for the feedback. I want to keep cat and dog separate because I my Sim to be a Cat vet. Also, I've had bad experiences with taking my cats to vets who also handle both species and a lot of the vets around where I live are now splitting the profession up between Cat and Dog instead of taking care of both.
The text in the xml files is split up between male and female - it looks like I didn't get something copied properly :)
Yeah, in the sixth branch I put in some text to test that when I copied the new version of the career into the game, the game was actually seeing it. I forgot to remove it. :P
Exotic is ready to test now as well. I'm really loving that Liquid XML app.

Okay, I'll add it to my game and test it while testing the equine as well. :3
EDIT: The equine and exotic career works fine for females. I wasn't going to test for males but after the small error with the vet career, I might as well.
EDIT2: tested both with males and everything works fine! :D

I've been really busy with the holidays. I tested the dog/cat in appolosa works great, I tried in bridge port by adding the equestrian center and it doesn't work. Idk if you knew that but thought I would let u know.

Thanks for the feedback Luckk and MandeeLynn. I'll stick the equestrian center in Bridgeport and test there. Sometimes rabbitholes can be annoying when moved though, and if you enter build mode and move it again (just pick it up and drop in the same place) it fixes it. It's an old bug that's been around forever. Hopefully that's all it is.
Oh wait... Bridgeport is a city and the rest of the worlds are towns... if I remember right there was a distinction between the two that the Pets EP makes. There might be a bigger problem here.
I've been working on getting all the xml files for the remaining careers written, so this weekend I'l put them together. I also want to get the opportunities working if possible.
Update 12/31
I edited the files, found a misplaced bracket in one, but nothing seemed wrong in the other two. All three are now showing up in the game though, even Bridgeport, so that's a relief. I remembered that Bridgeport's problem has to do with the spawners (no wild horses) so that has nothing to do with careers. Anyway, please let me know if you see anymore problems. thanks!
