Before you start:
I'd suggest this game was played in Sunset Valley but it doesn't matter at all if you don't.
Founder:
It doesn't matter if they are male or female, the only thing that really matters is that they have the green fingers trait so that they get free seeds at the start of the game. Their lifetime wish should probably be 'Swimming in Cash' because it's likely to happen but it doesn't really matter. Also, frugal could be a pretty good trait, along with workaholic.

First Step:
I've played this whole thing myself and this part is really hard, but rewarding. The only rule is:
Don't spend a single penny on anything but bills and your first house!
You have to live in this house all the way through the first step and as soon as you move in, delete the fridge aswell as the grill if there is one. Not moving wasn't hard for me because I normally only move once per generation anyway. The start of the 2nd generation begins when your founder dies. By the time he was dead, I had about 400,000 simoleons. I lived off of plants in the back yard but kept some spare apples in my inventory in case they wouldn't let me harvest my crops because I was to hungry. If you ever get to a desperate point of starvation then steal a snack out of someone else's fridge or go to the fire station if you have Ambitions.

Second Step:
This generation are going to start living the good life. The only rule is:
You're not allowed to sell anything except your house!
Make sure they spend as much money as they can because by the third generation they have to have leess than 100 simoleans so that they can't pay their bills and have to move. I made sure they went out for dinner every night and by the time they died, they were really fat as for the generation before them had been super thin.

Third Step:
Since this generation have to have less than 100 simoleons before they move, you have to get rid of everything they own before they move, while earning the least amount of money possible. Personally, I used cheats to delete everything I owned without making any money but on my old computer, doing that would have super-lagged it so alternatively, you could move another family in with your family and moved out without that family so that you don't actually sell the house. For the next home, make a 10x10 lot with just an 8x8 room with a hole in the wall instead of a door and 8 of the cheapest singlee beds. If you can't fit them all in, just put one outside. This generation will be riches to rags poverty sims. The next generation begins when there is only one person left from this generation.
The rules are:
You are not allowed to spend more than 100 simoleons a day except while you are building the house
2. You must have at least 5 children
If you have generations, then maybe the mother of the household could start a daycare to pay the bills but really, focus on the fathers career. He should be a painter but if you don't have ambitions then just sell his paintings instead of actually following the career path. It's extremely hard to keep track of how much money you've spent but my tip would be to make the same meals every day so you know how much money you have left over and use that to buy luxuriesYou can save up the extra money from one day and add it to the next days budget but gets more confusing that way. This was my favourite stage. If you sell something, then the money isn't added to the budget. The next generation begins when the children are Young Adults. If you can, choose the workaholic trait as soon as possible for your child.

4th Step:
After your favourite child's become a young adult you can move them out. The only rule is:
You must reach leveel 10 in your career and have an affair with someone at your work
The first move will be to a suburban house. You may not have enough money yet though so choose any career you want(but not a profession) and if you managed to get the workaholic trait for your child in the previous stage, work from home as much as you can until you're level 5 in your career and then you should be pulling in the money. As soon as you can, move into the most suburban looking house you can find and marry anyone you wish. After you're married, give yourselves make-overs to become extremely suburban looking people. Once you reach level 9 in your career, start an affair with someone at your work. It's up to who you like better out of the two women in your life who you break up with but by the time you become an adult, you must have chosen between the two. If you choose the work colleague, move in with her(or to a whole new house) to begin your new lives together and if you choose the original wife, move into a bigger home so that you can make space for the new baby. Your wife is never to know about this affair so if you have generations, cancel newspaper delivery(I was once caught by the news-paper delivery even though I was completely out of their sight and my wife would not forgive me so she moved out and I had no-one left) and only ever do your dirty deeds inside the privacy of your own home while your wife is out for at least a couple hours(i.e. out at gym or spa). If you have generations, this challenge is a million times harder because of the gossip that imediately goes around town and also because your wife doesn't forgive you normally... In any case, try to keep spending down to a minimum for the purposes of the next step... your next generation begins when your oldest child(or only child) becoms a Young Adult.

5th Step:
This generation want to break out of the mould and be different. It begins as soon as they have no one holding them back(i.e. The previous generation aree dead) The rules are:
Everyone must reach level ten of the painting and guitar skill
You must earn all your money through tips and selling paintings
you must have as many children as you can fit into the household!
You can sell stuff in your house but you can't sell plans that you've grown in your garden. You can move house if you want, I didn't though because my house was big and comfertable already.

6th Step:
This generation are lazy idiots who all rely on their obese sister to earn all the money. The only rule for this generation is:
The only money made by this generation is by your fattest sim who will now become a chef
So basically, I suggest you start cooking as soon as possible. You are not allowed to make your other sims earn money in any way but they can still garden and such as long as it's your money earning sim who sells the produce. They can't play for tips or go to the consignment store.
7th Step:
This is the final step but if there's popular demand and your not already sick of your family, I can add some challenges to this one or I'll put up some more similar different Rule by Generation ones I've played aswell! :)
If you didn't get many simoleons in the last challenge, then you can still play this challenge, it will just be slightly easier. Anyways, this is the grand finally with bits taken from every challenge so far. Here are the rules:
1.You must live on produce grown in your garden with the exception of toddlers who must eat autumn salad out of the blender!
2.You are not allowed to sell anything at all and by the end of this challenge you must be down to just 100 simoleons
3.You must have at least 5 children and each and every one must have the frugal and workaholic traits
4.You must master the guitar skill

Notice that you have to spend 129,900 without spending a penny on food! Also, you'll have to either have good pregnancies, teach them all their toddler skills or have your children do great in school if you want to give them the required traits! It's very hard but the most important thing is that you have the life-span on Normal for at least this one step because otherwise everything gets to easy. Anyway, hope you enjoyed this! And more Steps are coming soon, I just have to test them first, to see if there are any problems with playing them.

I'm assuming we can't choose to buy the house furnished for generation 1, right?

Yes, you can but you have to delete the fridge and microwave or any food things because if you didn't buy it furnished then you would always be to tired to harvest crops since you'd have no bed ;)
