When I make a height map (for example, a crater) when I use it to start a new world, it makes two craters, both now side-by-side ovals.
Is there a way to fix this?

That is a symptom of having the incorrect bit depth on your PNG image. You need to have 16 Bit greyscale- which means 16 bits per channel.
