View Full Version : What are your most unused actions/interactions/items?

I always get curious as to how some people play and do things on the Sims because there's so much there, and everyone is different. :P
Lately, I've set myself a mini-challenge to use items/interactions/actions that I don't normally use. It's really hard to change play style especially when you forget about certain things in the game.
For instance. I never use "Party Options" Of any kind, not even birthday cakes.
I never ever use the "Alarm Clocks" or the "Ask" interactions unless its to form a group, and while I get these bright ideas to have parties or ceremonies, I always forget about the "Formal Wear", which I have tons of CC for.
So what is it that you don't use because you forget? Or there's no interest? Let me know :!: :bunny:

Businesses. I have tried tried and tried to drive a business, but the whole thing just makes me so frustrated. Complaining customers, useless employees and such a small profit for all the hard work. But for some reason I canīt just accept that businesses arenīt my thing and ignore them - it seems so fun when I watch how other people drives all different kind of businesses and I would like to discover the fun my self... And when I finally decide to start one I get lazy and say "Iīll do that another day" but the "other day" never comes. So I guess this is a thing where I will have to force myself to do it and then be very very patient.

Least used objects:
Alarm clocks. Pinball machines, arcade games, remote-controlled toys. Skating rinks and bowling alleys. HELICOPTERS! (I have never once seen or used the helicopter that came with AL. How many years has it been?) Aspiration rewards other than smart milk and the money tree. Erm...let's pretend supernaturals are objects: zombies (still!), werewolves, plantsims.
Least used interactions:
Anything under the "irritate" menu. Most of the "asks" except "ask about interests," "do you like what you see," and "what do you want?" Punch-you/Punch-me (though my Sims play it autonomously so frequently it may not count). Most of the BV & AL gestures (again, see them autonomously...a lot).
Least used actions:
Watch clouds. Entertain>Freestyle.
Least seen clothing:
Underwear. Except after woohoo. I simply haven't bothered to find custom underwear for teen and younger, 'cause I am never going to see it.

I have just started the whole home business thing. IT was on my list of 'unused' in my game. I made a curtain shop, and it was hectic. I had to close down because I didn't have enough items to restock

I hardly ever use the ask interaction or the talk about hobby interactions, though lately I've been trying out those two to see how they affect game play. I also have never created groups, which i might start doing after reading some of the interesting ideas people have come up with for groups. As for objects, I have never used aspiration or career rewards except those that fit in a quasi-realistic neighborhood (such as the golf thing, or the military training object). I think that this year I'll resolve to quit trying to keep my Simmies relatively mundane, and cut loose with all the funny, and weird stuff that I love hearing about but never implemented in my game.

During my experimental phase, I'd buy the alarm clock because it was so useful in Sims1, but the way it tanked the environment score for an entire hour was not worth it. I also had left over from Sims 1 the habit of putting my sims to bed and lining up their first actions in the morning, so they'd get right up as soon as rested and hit the bathroom; and having to go back and turn off the alarm clock after doing that? Waste of time. Most of my sims are up in plenty of time for the carpool anyway, and with one-hour notices for both getting to work and going to class it's easier for me to wake them up if they're not.
I've hardly touched any of the OFB stuff yet, but that's because I installed that EP so recently and am too busy doing other things to mess with learning to run businesses. I'll be surprised if they ever fit into my playstyle; but I didn't expect to love vacations that much, either.
I have a tendency not to fully decorate my houses, spending most of my money on useful objects instead. Often I don't think of it till my Fortune sims remind me that they like statues and paintings and things. It's a shame, too, because I have lots of lovely homey clutter I've downloaded; but I'm so eager to play, and like putting up photobooth photos and sim-made pictures so much, that I mostly don't think about it.
It's hard to say what interactions I don't use much, because if I don't use them, I'm not noticing them. I never ask what a townie date's job is until I have a story reason to know. I've given up asking people their signs because something always seems to distract me. I've hardly taught anybody a nursery rhyme yet. And it seems like I'm always discovering wonderful new interactions I didn't know about before, like the "show off" ones for children. Those are adorable!

Off the top of my head (and trying to exclude previously mentioned items)....
Social groups, aliens, the genie or wishing well, most of the EAxis jobs (I see my Sims so little if they're always rushing off to work), PJs (unless the Sims don't know each other enough to be comfortable sharing a bed while in their undies---yes, Sims will refuse to share a bed if they aren't close and aren't wearing PJs), much the extraneous Build or Buy mode content that were added to fit a whimsical theme (the 60s "funky" content from Uni comes to mind), Primping (I was a bit disappointed the patch brought it back, so I made a mod to hide it again :P I hate having too many options on the Self-Sim menu), Popularity and Grilled Cheese Sims.
I tend to to play Sims in the Teen-YA-Adult range. So not much regarding Elders or pre-Teens.
(Businesses can be great, but you definitely need mods for just about any hope of sanity or fun. ;) )

Topping my list would be other places. They never go on vacation, or downtown, or even to a community lot. I have generations of Sims who have never left the house except to go to work. They are born, grow, get married, and die all in the same house. May be boring for them, but I don't like the hassle of traveling.
Second on my list would be stressful things. I hate parties; that little clock counting down the minutes to failure! I drives me crazy, too much like a real game, like when you hear that speeded up Mario music saying you've only got 60 seconds to reach the end! :faceslap: So no parties, no dates, and no businesses. I play Sims to relax, not go crazy.

Hmm... my most/always unused are:
-Pajama category: I've gotten so use to clicking >sleep in underwear, that I never try the other. I like seeing my sims in undies. I'm thinking about using some of the really nice CC PJs and putting them in the Undies category too.
-all creature except Servos & Genies. I was never really interested in supernatural and I didn't really like playing them.
-alarm clock as well. Never!
-'influence to', except to write term paper, but I've given up on Uni.
-cars- I'll use very rarely, only on rich sims who's houses would look ugly without a garage. I've never used an owned helicopter
-those zigzag room divider things under deco
-the groovy/70's furniture. Maybe except the lips sofa lol
-I dont use fireplaces often, but I am trying to use it more since theyre are many beautiful CC ones.
Not sure about interactions, since I let my sims interact with each other on their own.
Its funny to read this thread, as I am in love with OFB Businesses, community lots (I have many for different purposes and for different age groups, so my sims visit more than once a week), parties (necessary wedding & birthday parties), while many don't like these!

Parties of any sort. Though to be fair I have tried to throw a wedding party for Samantha Cordial and What's his face Green. I keep forgetting that u go on a honeymoon after that and can come back pregnant which is why I'm starting to throw them.
Cuddle/HuntforBugs/Nearly anything under Ask or Irritate unless story purposed (hehe Daniel Pleasant throwing drink in Dustin Broke's face then buying him off hehe)
CUSTOM CONTENT!!!! Seriously my need for it has dropped to zero from the home side of it. I don't use less than half of Maxis items and had so much other downloaded stuff I never used I got rid of it all. Unless it's related to anything bodyshop or Maxis matched/expanded I don't use it. Though I am on the hunt for a few nice pedestal sinks for half baths.
Vacations and community Lots are starting to grow on me as I want to stop using the phone to get things or a computer.

Least used:
-The remote control car and helicopter. (Could someone tell me if this can still actually potentially break your game/cause major problems? That's pretty much why I don't use it - it used to be unsafe and then I never did figure out if any subsequent patches had fixed it.)
-Zombies. I fail to see the point.
-Servos/Robots. Again, they seem like too much breakage to be worth the use. Ironically, I've downloaded default replacement Servos and the robot station and occasionally use the hammer-and-anvil replacement for decor in my rural neighborhoods, but the station itself never gets used.
-Alarm clock. I don't know if this happens in an unmodded game, but if I direct my sim to sleep and then queue an action for them, they'll get up when the energy bar's full. I also have a "drop whatever you're doing and go to work" hack that eliminates the need for an alarm clock.
-Owned businesses. I've tried (although not with Business Runs You!, just the non-hacked setup), and it was just so darn tedious and unprofitable.
-Bowling alleys. I swear I'm going to try to make one, but I haven't gotten around to it.
-Vacations, although I've sworn I'll change this, too. It's just that when I first got BV, the very first family I sent on vacation was one of my favorites, and they ended up with a major bug where they'd never return home (and you couldn't enter their home lot because they were all on vacation.) To solve it, I had to move them to a different house, losing generations worth of custom portraits, novels, and objects - and when I tried to restore from backup, it turned out that my previous backup was corrupt. It was such a pain that I swore off sending anyone anywhere EVER AGAIN.
-Apartments. I tried them out when AL came out, but decided I didn't like them. So much trouble with apartment people showing up where they weren't supposed to be, passing out and peeing in the common areas, massive townie overgeneration (this was before they had the appropriate noregenhacks for AL.) I've decided that if I'm going to play apartments, I'd rather try moving several families into one lot and playing them all at once (my userstartup.cheat allows many more than 8 on a lot.)
-The owned helicopter. I don't like the helicopter coming for my top Business sims; I'd rather they drive ownable cars to work than have the helicopter come. Plus, it takes up so much space on a lot - who has the room to place one of those helipads?
-Most aspiration rewards.
-Buyable electronics (mp3, cell phone, whatever else there is) and cologne.
-In Build mode, the decorative things like the cornices and the industrial stuff.

I haven't tried most of the aspiration rewards at all; don't suit the Drama Acres ambiance. I'm open to the entrance of supernaturals in the game, but they haven't happened naturally and I'm not going out of my way to get them; however, certain sims have taken to picking on the Wicked Witch, and another one has dated her. I figure when they start to happen naturally that's that best thing for the game.
Social groups are marvelous, and you don't have to go to community lots to use them (though I love community lots, too - so much opportunity on them!). I can't use them as often as I want to, but that's because there's always so much for my sims to do, I run out of time, and I want to use them a lot.
I hardly ever use any of the bathtubs. Shower/tubs are just so much handier!

I'm the same, my poor sims, they only leave the house for work and school lol. I might start trying Vacation though.
I don't like argue/irritate, it can be a bit upsetting if they start slapping each other.
Slow/classic dancing with another sim is annoying as it's hard to break them out of each others clutches.
I've never had vampire or werewolf sims, I'd like to get a teen werewolf but whenever they get to the friend stage with the wolf it leaves and never comes back.
Zombies are horrible, Meadow Thayer accidentally became one when she died pregnant in a kitchen fire and husband Dustin brought her back with all the simoleans they had - not enough. They smell, take forever to drag themselves around, and don't ever die (again)!
I don't play plantisims, I like my gardening simmies to have a regular life.

I rarely use the supernatural creatures, I like them, but I haven't gotten around to it. Honestly, there is so much in the Sims 2 world that its hard to fit everything in - even after playing for years.

Plantsims and zombies are the only ones I never use, the rest however are integrated because a sim fear has to be one of the supernaturals even if it's one I don't use so they eventually make it in.
Pools are something else I never use on home lots and I never get around to make a community pool either. There are also some lighting fixtures that I REFUSE to even glance at because of the sheer uglyness of them If we could default replace furniture I would be ecstatic.

-Businesses. I created a sub hood full of business owners and I haven't touched it in months. Lack of interest is the main culprit there with a hint of frustration.
-Robots.
-Supernatural creatures like vampires, zombies, etc. I was never interested in that aspect of the game.
-Vacation neighborhoods. I'd like to use them more, but there are too many more interesting things to do. I always start building nice beach houses or cabins but I forget about them easily.
-Negative interactions, the "pass on knowledge" interaction, and those five or six special gestures.
-decorative plants, coffee tables, table lamps, floor lamps, living chairs, shelves, decorative clutter

Now that I think of it, I haven't used/played a lot of things
-Cheap Stoves They give so much less hunger satisfaction. I don't know why most premade houses have them.
- Cheap showers/tub.What's the point of them if they take up so much space and take so long to use. The exception is the communal shower, which is only one tile and can be placed outside too. Useful when I have very low-budget or am using the smallest lot as a temporary home.
- Till recently I've never used the cheap beds too for the same reasons. Now, I've started using them after getting the 'Same energy gain for all beds mod'
- Recliners, alarm clocks, trash cans (I buy compactors as soon as my sims can afford them. When they can't, they can very well use the outside bin)
- The cheap coffee maker and the hot chocolate maker which give less energy than the Espresso machine.
- The arcade machine, which only gives 'Fun - 6'. I buy my sims a 'Fun - 10' pinball machine asap.
- The High-chair for toddlers. After, I realized, there wasn't any real advantage to it as opposed to giving the kid a bottle. I stopped using it. And it takes too many steps as well.
- The Noodlesoother and Social Glasses aspiration rewards
- The Compost Bin. After I"ve had the 'floating lid of trash can' bug on the main Monty lot in Veronaville, I'm scared to touch it. That was one of the scariest bugs I had.
- NPCs like repairmen, maids, nannies, gardeners and butlers. I did use repairmen and maids when I was new to the game and had only the base game, but not now. I've yet to see how a butler even looks like. Also I've never used a Pet obedience trainer.
- The Gypsy Matchmaker for dates. Though I use her to buy love potions, but never for getting blind dates. As she'll most definitely pick committed sims as potential matches and the date starts immediately without giving a choice whether to accept or reject the sim which dropped from the sky.
-Vacation Homes: I'd really like to use them, but I've read too many reports of sims getting 'stuck' in the Vacation worlds due to them.
-The 'Bluewater Village' sub-hood. I've only added it to the first neighborhood I had ever played. So in all other neighborhoods I deal with the 'it appears you have not added a sub-hood... bla bla...' message.
- Also, I've never had a Plantsim yet. I'm trying very hard to get one without relying on mods, but no luck :( Guess, I'll have to put the plantsimfix mod in after all.

Community lots: Not that I never used them. I think I've seen all the Downtown lots, at least. Enough to get kind of bored of them. I just... don't like going to them. I think the long loading time is a definitely a contributing factor.
Supernaturals: Never used them. I'm not interested in vampires, zombies, werewolves, aliens, or robots IRL, so I'm not interested in my Sims being them. I like the flavor they give the game, though.
Businesses: I prefer the standard careers. Retail doesn't excite me much. I do have one Sim I want to open a bakery with, but she's currently a toddler, so it'll be awhile yet.
Aspiration/Career Rewards: I admit, I use money cheats. I have a weakness for building fully-furnished homes with all the works. That makes the game quite a bit easier for me, so I avoid these so there's a little bit more challenge involved.
Ask... Interaction: The only time I think I'd need this is for townies and, while they're definitely part of the dating pool, they're not really part of the long-term commitment pool.
Hobbies>Recreation Stuff: I use the chess and dart boards and playground equipment, but the rest is either too big or it's stuff Sims tend to get "stuck" on. I keep forgetting to get rid of the Myshuno game at the Hills Community Center since invariable when I go there, it's where everyone will be clustered.

Most supernaturals (never played a zombie)--I'll keep a witch and vampire around, and sometimes an adult plantsim, and I love my aliens, but that's it. I don't like the werewolf personality change.
Aspiration rewards--too easy to get, make play too easy. I'll use them when they're allowed for specific challenges, but not in my regular play-hood. My sims have it rough--but they don't know it, because they get what they want. I do use career rewards. They have to be earned and, with Pescado's harderjobs, it takes the sims a while to get them.
Gypsy Matchmaker for dates--due to my combination of hacks will drop inappropriate aged dates. But that's my own doing, not game code. Also she doesn't have a clue about social classes--which are entirely in my head, after all.

I don't do businesses or use apartments. As for objects, the least-used categories are paintings and sculptures. I'm not much of a decorator, so the decor tab is largely ignored. Like many others, I never use the remote-controlled toys either. Just don't think about them much.
I wonder what I might be missing by not using more decorations? The scarecrow "sculpture" has the special "scare" thing it does with sims. Are there other decorative objects that sims interact with in special ways?
Something else I don't use: the break dance mat. I tried it once, but think the animations are absolutely ridiculous. Not well done at all, imo, and that's unfortunate.
I like the supernaturals, for the most part. Took me awhile to warm up to werewolves, because of the personality change, but over time I let go of my insistence that all sims need to be Nice and Neat. (How boring!) Aliens are my favorite, but I don't really think of them as "supernatural". Vampires would be my favorite of those, although I'm not keen on them being immortal. Fortunately, there's a vampire aging hack!
Plantsims are pretty cool, and very handy to have on vacations to keep everyone's needs up! :D
Still not a fan of zombies, but since I also now have a zombie aging hack, I'm willing to entertain the notion of having one or a few at some point.
Servos... Not without a LOT of behavior-modifying hacks to make them less annoying (food waste!) and self-destructive. Ugh.
Other under-used things in my game are craft bench items. Definitely need more toy makers, especially. The water-wiggler is really cute!

Hmm, let me see.
I never use decorations, either. I don't have the patience or any skills in decorating whatsoever, so I don't even bother trying. I want to play, dammit! I tend to forget decorative objects exist at all, unless a sim has a want to buy a painting or sculpture or something, then I suddenly remember their existance..
I dislike apartments, simply because the system doesn't work very well in my opinion. I also never send my sims into vacation, simply because I am too impatient and worry too much about the timesync in my neighborhoods...I am afraid I am going to ruin everything if I send them... and I also, like many others here, don't use alarm clocks since they are a bit pointless. I also forget that Influence even exists, and don't use cars because... I don't know why. I have lots of custom cars and...never use them at all.
Darby, could you please, please, please send me a link for the zombie/vampire aging mods? The fact they don't age is the only thing about vampires and zombies that annoys me! have been looking for a mod like that for ages, and thought I would have to continue to age them manually as I've been doing(it's pretty annoying.), and am delighted to discover such a mod actually exists! Pretty please?
Peni Griffin
12th Jan 2012, 09:10 PM
Vacations shouldn't upset your timesync. They don't age (so a pregnant lady can spend a week there without popping, elderly sims won't die, etc.) and return, as from any other community lot, within moments of leaving. It might screw up with a specific timesync mod that dates from before BV, but that should be just a matter of downloading the most recent version. I find vacations a grand way to use up extra money and get extra time with my favorite sims. But I haven't used any of the special skills yet.
If you're afraid they'll get stuck, make a backup before sending them.
I have yet to adopt a stray. I had a problem with that in Sims1, too. They always seem to arrive when my sim is too exhausted to deal with them.

I don't use pets period. Too much of a hassle when u already have 8 sims on a lot to need to deal with pets and their own offspring. I pretty much keep strays limited to community lots since any damage done on those are reset every time you send a sim there.
Thanks to this thread i'm gonna start trying to use more of the items I and everyone else ignores in game see if it helps my gameplay style any.

Absolutely! http://www.insimenator.org/index.php/topic,26625.0.html :) (I hope you don't have Inteen.)
(edit: I said in another thread somewhere that these were by Cyjon, but I was mistaken. They're Squinge's.)
I second Peni about vacations not messing up your lot syncs. They totally do not.
AND, if you find yourself having to jump through hoops to keep your 'hood synced, get Neder's Day Setter (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=318007). That, plus Paladin's Seasons Controller at simwardrobe.com will give you total control and make keeping everyone on the same schedule a piece of cake!

Thanks a lot, both of you! I always thought they did, because someone once told me so. Guess I've been fooled, then... :( My sims will be happy to know I'll let them go in vacations from now on :D
Sorry for being annoying, but... the mod you linked to is "EP4", which probably means "Pets" and... my latest EP is Apartment Life(MG, actually). Is it compatible with my game, then? :) I don't have Inteen, btw.
And thanks for the day setter, really. I use the lottimersync or something like that at MATY, but the fact the days of the week didn't match kinda annoyed me.

Uh, good question, actually. I have the full game myself, and have not tested these hacks just yet.
I think it's probably fine, though. Reading the thread, there was a problem with pets not aging properly, which he fixed, so that's why it's listed as EP4 compatible, I assume. But since zombies came with Uni, and vampires came with NL, maybe there's no need for them to be updated for later EPs.
Nonetheless, it's always a good idea to back your game up before adding a new mod, of course. And if I get a chance to play and test these mods myself sometime soon, I'll let you know what happens.

Like everyone else I never use the alarm clock. Used it once in the beginning thinking it would be as beneficial as it is in Sims 1, but it wasn't so I haven't used it again. Though my sim is oddly selling them at the electronics anyway. Most aspiration objects I never or no longer use. I don't buy the cheap telescope. I always forget about archways and awnings when I'm building. And I've never used anything to decorate the roof with. I always forget about curtains too.

I tried alarm clocks once. Annoying! I keep an eye on the time and just wake my Sims up myself.
Also, I almost never refer to a Sim's Interests. Just once in a while. I have a Popularity Sim who has almost zero interest in Travel, so I got her a magazine. But it's kinda rare that I'd do that.

Apart from the supernaturals, teenagers are the next least used "things" in my game. My sims have babies that eventually grow into children, but by the time they become teens I get really bored of them so I either stop playing the family or ship them off to university and they never return from there. Also my sims rarely age, so I very rarely play elders.

Anything to do with pets . . . Art Nouveau furniture too. That and full-wall wallpaper (WITH NO CROWN MOULDING), I see no use for it because I'm OCD like that where every room MUST! have crown moulding on the borders between wall and floor.

That and full-wall wallpaper (WITH NO CROWN MOULDING), I see no use for it because I'm OCD like that where every room MUST! have crown moulding on the borders between wall and floor. You can get round that with these (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=181834). They're not visible on walls that are down, but if you play cut-away or walls up (for photos and the like) you'll see them. They're also recolourable if you use the template provided :)
Me, it's community lots - I rarely go to them unless my sim owns a business. And clutter sculptures; I'm trying to get into the habit of making houses that look lived-in. Unless I'm dressing for photos my lots are quite sparse decor-wise.
I've never used the groups function either - but then as they're really used for community lot outings it makes sense that I've not bothered with it. "Ask..." sometimes gets used, but infrequently.

I find no molding helpful if you're making a room with a vaulted ceiling (i.e. using those big 2-story windows and leaving the 2nd floor open above the ground-floor room.) If you use molding, there's a big line running through the window; I only use the no-molding wallpapers and paints in those circumstances and sometimes get annoyed that EAxis didn make the molding optional.
Just curious about other peoples' design styles - do you find yourself using the furniture you like? Sometimes if I have sims who I feel would like a modern style or an industrial style or a battered homey style, I'll use that, but I tend to default to using my favorites (which, for me, is the Art Nouveau stuff, those expensive French counters, the Tuscan set from here, and generally more traditional, less-metallic stuff.)

Adding Murphy beds and elevators to the list of items I never use. I just never think about them. But now that Juliercy mentioned them in another thread about sim death... :deal:

I do have to watch that I don't use the same stuff in every house. I'm probably worst about using the same few floorings and wall treatments. Decorating is not something I'm all that good at, and it's hard for me to "see" or be objective about looks that are outside what, to me, is mainstream. Unless it's a themed lot. I can do "jungle island" pretty well. ;)

I use Murphy beds but just as any other bed, my sims never fold them up. I also tend to use the same floorings over and over again, and the same kitchen counter and sink and bathroom fixtures.

lol great we could start an overused topic as well.
I just discovered today that I have CC versions of some already in game small deco objects. Now that totally tells me how bad I am at underusing that category if i have doubles and still didn't know it until now.
