View Full Version : X-ed out thumbnail in launcher: did I break it?

I was reinstalling some Store sets through the launcher (I'd do .packages, but with the gibberish names they're stored as in the sims3packs I can't identify individual items, which is troublesome when I only want part of a set...)

Things were going okay, it lags like hell once I have a few hundred megabytes of stuff but that's typical EA. The weird thing is that when I went to the installed content tab, one of the thumbnails in the top four was replaced by a white box with a red X over it, which moves with the list as I scrolled down so it was always in the same position on the screen (if that makes any sense.) Closing out of the launcher and reloading got rid of it, but I'm concerned that some of the stuff might be corrupt now.

I have basegame + Ambitions, Late Night, and Pets, all fully patched. The sims3packs in question (I'm not certain if a specific one triggered this) installed and worked properly in the past.

Also, I know how to extract packages from sims3packs, but how can I identify the contents so that I can maybe avoid the Launcher in future?

I have no clue about the first part, but if you have the patience you can extract your sims3packs one at a time, then go in immediately after each one, find the "alphabet soup", and rename it to whatever you just extracted.

That's the problem- they're sets, so there's multiple alphabet-soup'd packages in each one, and s3pe doesn't have the handy texture previews that SimPE did unless I'm missing something. But I guess I can live with having a couple items I don't want in among the ones I do, since it's not like I'm short on disk space right now. It doesn't seem like such a big deal now that I'm less tired and frustrated. :)
I poked around a bit more after asking last night, too, and it turns out CUSTARD works pretty well for identifying objects. Not so much with hair and clothes, because objects are identified as something like ChairDiningClub while clothes/hair are just Everyday (yaf) or whatever.

I wouldn't mind knowing what happened with the Launcher though. Since it went away on reload, could it have just been a memory issue? I get the feeling the Launcher uses a lot, and my computer's a few years old so I only have a couple gigs of it to begin with.

Just to let you know...I had an issue with the launcher and the red cross thing. I have since reinstalled my computer system and haven't got to the part where I install stuff via the launcher. I think it's an Origin/Launcher issue. Do you get any messages saying Origin couldn't load/log in etc? I was getting the red cross on thumbnails, then the whole window (launcher app) would have a red cross through it. At first I thought it was a content issue but I really don't think it is. Maybe someone else will come on here and explain more.
