View Full Version : {solved-kinda?} OMG I'm so tired and confused! How to make Male hair available for females & vice versa?

I've searched modding discussions, tutorials and the C-A-S sections and googled myself to death. Wojtek made a bunch of gender and age hair conversions, why can't I? How's it done?!?
Any information anyone is willing to provide will be greatly appreciated!

I just started doing this yesterday.

Use this tutorial: http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=354639

Instead of changing the outfit type, change the sex it appears for.

Sadly this only works for toddlers and children because opposite sexed sims bodies are different when they're older so the meshes won't look right :(

Thank you for the reply! I'm off to have a look!
I have to ask, since you say 'when they're older' does that mean that it could be done as separate files for adult and elder?
Thanks again!

Look at some custom hairs - you'll notice that there's usually one file or teens, adults and elders, and separate files for children and toddlers. This is because teens, adults and elders can all use the same mesh.

However, while for toddlers and children, the shape of the sim's body, face and head is the same regardless of gender; for teens, adults and elders, men and women have different body, head and face shapes. So, you will have to edit a male mesh to make it fit a female body, and vice versa. You can, of course, not bother - and it will work, but there will be gaps or the hair will clip through the sim's face. It's up to you whether or not you're willing to put up with that. :)

I see... Thank you so much for the reply... At this point, I can't even get past this part of the CTU Guide:

Then go to the location of your latest Sims 3 game app in your Applications folder, and ctrl+click to select 'show package contents' (if it's an alias you will have to ctrl+click to show original, and then ctrl+click on the original to show package contents).

Go to:

Contents -> Resources -> Transgaming -> c_drive -> Program Files -> Electronic Arts -> The Sims 3 -> GameData -> Shared

And copy the two folders and the resource.cfg in there into the corresponding folder you just made in your Documents folder. When CTU asks for your Sims 3 Root folder, point it to Documents/Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3

What 'Applications' folder and where is 'Contents'?!? Huhwha?!?
I consider myself an experienced object mesher, but if I can't even understand the basic instructions for this tool, then I reckon I need to surrender... It's making me more tired and confused.
I do appreciate you both taking the time to reply!

I believe - and I'm not a Mac user, so I might be wrong, but this is my best guess - that you need to open a Finder window. Applications should be listed under Places, in the side bar as in this pic: http://switchtoamac.com/guides/guides/images/finder_window_01.png

I guess it might be different depending on which version of Mac OS you're using... but hopefully not too different.

Unless, of course, you use Windows and are reading the Mac tutorial by mistake? ;)

Might I suggest sleeping before modding? :p .

Hi again.
I just found out something awesome!
Twallan's MasterContoller has an option to unlock all hair for both sexes :lovestruc
Some of the haristyles probably won't look right because males and females have different bodies, but it's still awesome :D

In case you don't know, you can get MasterContoller here: http://nraas.wikispaces.com/MasterController

I've tried it. It's awesome! I didn't try every single hairstyle but I only found a few that don't look right. I expected more of them to look weird but most are perfect :lovestruc
