View Full Version : Is there a general terms of use/license available for contributed meshes and textures?

I understand that most content creators here have a specific "terms of use" on their profile which outlines how their meshes and textures can be used. However, what if I wanted to use a creators downloads outside of the world of Sims? I haven't found any information about this in the forums (someone kindly point me to a link if it does exist).

I am an indie game developer specializing in 3D character development. I recently was looking to purchase some 3D props online to add to my character and I happened to stumble upon this website. What exactly are the terms of use for if I wanted to say use a content creators hair mesh or item of clothing with my own non-Sims character? Is this ok? Please understand that I do not and will not sell any of my 3D characters, they only feature in my own games, so I would not be trying to make any financial gain by doing this. It is simply a matter of using the great 3D content available here in a gaming environment other than that of the Sims. I am also assuming that content creators here use their own meshes from scratch, is that correct? Since obviously if the proprietary Sims meshes were even partly used, then in my case using those would be an infringement of EA's copyright.

Anyway, I hope there are a few people in this great community who can lend some advice. Looking forward to some feedback. Thank you for now. :mod:

You'd need to ask the specific creator - we don't set any terms of use for creators; that's up to them. Many creators make their own stuff, but some don't - they are required to say if they've used a mesh or textures someone else has made (besides themselves/EA).

(I had a little trouble clicking the right "reply" button  , hence the deleted post above)

Thank you for your reply. In that case I will send the creator a private message. Where is it usually mentioned if an original mesh is used, in the "overview" section on the product page? I haven't been able to spot any such information so far. Thank you again. :gjob:

This question is in the wrong section - it has nothing to do with a broken Sims game. More appropriate would have been in Creator Issues (under Create Menu). If you have more questions about creating (as pertains to Sims) that has not been addressed here, please post in there as I'm locking this.

Or if it is a generic mesh creating query, the Meshing area would also suit.

Anyway, welcome to MTS, David! :bunny:

And, just to save you making a new thread if that's your last question - if a mesh has been used, that will be mentioned in the Overview, yes, with a link to where the original may be found. In the case of retextures, the mesh can also be linked to on the Download tab, but this is not the case where the mesh has been edited or is included with the retexture file.
