I know, I know. I haven't even finished the previous project and I'm just about to start a new one? Yes, that's right - however, the other world is not dead, it's just suspended.
Now, All I can do is to show you some pics from the world and to inform you, that most of the buildings in the world are and will be taken from google maps, so if your house has been chosen, you can feel lucky, since I choose them randomly.
Pics updated to the 2nd Beta.

Let's get a few things striaght:
1) I love for making this.
2) You deserve all the credit in the world for the homes on slopes.
I tried to do the homes that reside on a hit, and it requires SO MUCH EFFORT TO GET THE RIGHT. I didn't think anyone else was brave enough to even attempt doing them, and you've done a pretty darn good job! Also, And does that bridge work (the smaller one). I don't think it does, but it adds a lot tot he world, no doubt! It may help with routing under it, since that caused problems with bridges that do work.
Anywho, applauds. ^_^

This one doesn't work, it's just a decoration. The one I created before did work, it was just the Bridgeport bridge recolour.
Thank you for your kind words :)

Wow, this looks great. And if you need any basis to go on for a smaller version of San Francisco, a great example is GTA: SA's San Fierro, In fact now that I've mentioned that, I'm going to throw all of my homework aside and play it :)

I was about to say that someone has been playing too much of San Andreas ;) I've never seen real San Francisco, but the roads and buildings are just like in San Fierro ^^
Nice work so far, only feedbacky thing I can offer is that your roads have very heavy angles on them on the top of the slopes, if you can, try to soften them a little. I can of course see that you have built already, and softening the peaks on the road may make you redo some of the lots.

I respect armiel's opinion, however I think that looks like the real deal-you're doing a spot-on job of it and keep up the good work!I agree. The slopes are extremely sharp/steep in places and not all that rounded like I would expect. (attached some random pics from google for reference)

After a while, I'm back to the world. Since Showtime has been released, there are plenty things that come helpful, such as more Californian palm trees or a nice terrain.
Here's the Ferry Building, probably a live show venue:

A mission style church, with mausoleum in basement:

A private venue called 'the Watermelon' - you can guess the interior design :) :

The overview as for now:

Also, I gave up with the Airport, in its place will be the Hunter's Point.

Awesome. The architecture is really nice- I like the Ferry Building in particular!
One thing of note- I do hope you landscape the base of the skyscrapers- for example- the base of the TransAmerica Tower would do very nicely with some of Bridgeport's planters and Twinbrook's Red Oak Trees.
http://maps.google.ca/maps?rlz=1C1ASUT_enCA417CA417&q=transamerica+tower&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wl (For a view of the base of the tower)
The same goes for the church you have- some walls around the cemetery will do wonders!
Another cool idea- for cable car tracks, use a duplicate of the road you're currently using but with an detail texture on top.

I love this world! My family has lived the the San Francisco Bay Area for generations so I'd love to play this world! :) and because my family is old-time.. I know where everything USED to be. ;0)
Oh! I used to drive a CLUTCH in San Francisco! Those hills are murder! Dang near straight up. and they are STEEP. The only flat areas are the intersections. The sidewalks are stairs on some streets. You are on a steep slope and there's a stop sign at the top! You stop there driving a manual transmission and try to go without popping the clutch! (You learn fast, I tell you or roll downhill into the car in back of you.)
BTW - (I know there are limitations in how much real world you can cram into a Sims world.. so forgive me for insterting these comments... but I think Market street, rather than following the piers, should hang a west a few blocks norht the the Bay Bridge pier and go uphill past Castro Street/Noe Vally to Twin Peaks. Market is only flattish downtown until Van Ness, then it climbs. Also, Lombard doesn't drop downtown at the Transamerica building. It's on the north side by Fisherman's Wharf/Marina District. but my opinions don't really matter.. I am a purist who knows SF very well. Most users here wouldn't have a clue so it's ok. ;)
(Unasked for enhancements): I suggest you add a few more landmarks:
* COIT Tower on Telegraph Hill - a lady was crazy about firemen so she built this tower in honor of them.
* The San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park - This glass hothouse survived the 1906 earthquake and fire.
* Mausoleum - There are only 2 cemetaries in SF. All the other cemetary residents got evicted to Colma and Oakland after the earthquake in 1906. So, your world's mausoleum should go next to Mission Dolores or in the the Presidio. Mission Dolores is older and has above ground mini-crypts and gardens whereas the Presidio is strictly white crosses on green grass military cemetary..
* the Gate to Chinatown on Grant Street. It's Old SF.
*Playland at the Beach - if you want to go retro - build the Moustrap- a rickety-wooden roller coaster - and the fun house with the fat lady laughing.
*Another retro is Sutro Baths at ocean beach. It burned down in 1966. You can tour the ruins as long as you watch for sneaker waves.
*City Lights Bookstore - Founded by Beat Poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter Martin -
* OH! and your DIVE bar MUST be the Condor Club - Old Barbery Coast - on the corner of Broadway and Columbus - Starring Carol Doda - topless dancer. This is MUST for Broadway in the 60's and 70's. The sign even had neon nipples on the bikini. :P  like totally tacky and tasteless but it lasted for decades! The Condor Club is still there but Carol retired several years ago. She's like in her mid 60's now if not older.. if she's still around...

Yes, I know some things might be misplaced, however, the Market St is not finished, I'm actually mostly focused on the nothern areas and Downtown, but FYI, after the lanes merge, there's gonna be a hill, not sure if the Twin Peaks, but surely a hill.
* COIT Tower on Telegraph Hill - a lady was crazy about firemen so she built this tower in honor of them.
* the Gate to Chinatown on Grant Street. It's Old SF.
Yay, I've done the Coit Tower overnight, and thinking where to place Chinatown, since there's not much space left on the north.
* The San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park - This glass hothouse survived the 1906 earthquake and fire.
Wow, it's so beautiful, would be a shame not to create this, but where to find such nice glass roof? Will be looking for it though.
* OH! and your DIVE bar MUST be the Condor Club...
Yes, after seeing some pics of it, I think I'm in :)
The same goes for the church you have- some walls around the cemetery will do wonders!
I've placed evergreen plants lined up to the streets
Another cool idea- for cable car tracks, use a duplicate of the road you're currently using but with an detail texture on top.
Actually, I'm using the train tracks, but if I manage to create a good quality texture with tracks, it would be better, since it's kinda wonky when it comes to placing the tracks on a hill.
BTW does any of you know a program that I can use instead of Gimp? It makes the .dds textures way too sharp, and dunno how to repair it.
Thank you for the feedback, it helps a lot such a newbie like me, since I've never been to SF.

Hello,
The butterfly conservatory would not work for the conservatory. It's too tall, modern and dome-ish whereas the conservatory is rectangular and 1880's smallpane glass hot house..
However, DeMatze2's skylights could be made to work.. http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=470183

I might be able to help you with the DDS images. I have photoshop. Zip them and upload them here. I'll see it I have any talent to fix them for you. I make no promises other than I'll see if I could fix them for you. Pack a screen capture of them in game so I can see what the issues are. It could be simply that your image map is too small.
Oh. And Mission Dolores is on Dolores Street. The church is right up to the sidewalk but the center of the street is greenway with palm trees. The old cemetery is to the south of the church. There is a solid stucco over brick wall (Looks like concrete) around the cemetery. You climb up a few steps to get to the cemetery. The headstones are close to each other. There are olive trees, wisteria, bouganvilla, roses, small fountains, stone benches, etc. It has a small tule(rush) house replica in the cemetery grounds in honor of all the Costanoan/Ohlone people buried there.
Oh! the Dragon Gate to Grant Street's Chinatown is just off of Union Square.

You should add extra land on the other side of the bridge so people can make the other cities of the Bay Area such as Oakland or Berkeley. The East bay, I love your San Francisco world. If u make Oakland you can make the Oakland hills and U.C. Berkeley. Ever since the game came out in 2009 I've always wanted someone to make San Francisco. In San Francisco you should add Haight Ashbury and Golden Gate Park also the Bay Bridge using the bridge port bridge. good luck ! :)

Yes, and so is the tanker and some more stuff. As I noticed, he's able to successfully convert objects from FSX to TS3. I've already sent him an email asking for a tutorial, as I'm a total newbie at creating objects (as you could see my attempt to create the Sutro Tower), but received no response so far.
When will you release a beta?
Within a few days I guess, I still have to make some interiors, most of buildings is empty inside.

when you put in the first beta send it to the sims 3 web site and link it cause some people who make theses beautiful worlds like yours can't even share it with other people, cause of computer issues. so please send it to the sims 3 web site thank you.

Hi Monsoon,
I was so excited as I found this thread - San Francisco is such a great city and I would love to have it in my game, your work is just incredible!
But unfortunately, my game crashes everytime I try to enter your neighbourhood. Could one of the EPs be a problem?
I have installed all big EPs to Pets, but I don't have Showtime. The Mini-EPs are installed including Town Life Stuff (No Master Suite, Katy Perry and Diesel Stuff).
Maybe you have an idea why it doesn''t work?
Thanks and Greets

I love how it is, but the transamerica pyramid and bank of america building (yes, I know it's not called that anymore.) look really out of scale-maybe make them smaller to a reasonable margin if you can.
And the bank of america tower should be the reddish colour it is in real life.

Oh, just noticed. Yes, I am planning to do that, and I even know how to, but if someone uses Twallan's Master Controller, the cars will disappear as they would be treated as abandoned.
One solution is to make cars the same way as you make the shell buildings. Same idea, different mesh.
That is, you extract the mesh and textures from existing cars, or even use some of the meshes and textures from cars from different programs, and clone one of the shell buildings.
Of course, the cars will never move because they really are not cars, just more deco items. By the same token, Twallan's overwatch won't see them as cars either.

wow that is lovely, you got a TON of work done. It looks wonderful, the only thing I noted was that the far end of the golden gate seems to dip really weirdly. I don't know exactly how to remedy it so I figured out 3 possible ways:
1) Decrease the visibilty, so the fog comes in a little closer, and that end isn't visible.
2) Raise the DT so it covers that part up (maybe not, as I can understand you wanted it at a specific level to match the terrain.)
3, add a DT that blends into the old one and covers up the bridge dip. (Most Recommended)
Either way it should looks fine though.

If you were to do LA, there are plenty of deco buildings which could be converted from Flight Simulator to be placed in LA. Aerosoft just released its City of Los Angeles scenery for FSX, and it is just packed:

terrain paints and sidewalks placed on the sides?
That's exactly how I made it. It is impossible to make such a curvy road of this lenght. Yet your sims can still get to their houses using sidewalks.

You should take the taxi cabs that u can have in you're world, and turn them into cable cars with the cable car tracks.
Actually, this strikes me, in part, as something which is quite doable. I don't know about the taxi replacement, but making a static model of a cable car should not be all that involved.
I just looked at a Sketchup model of a cable car. It had like 50,000 polygons, 60,000 vertices and 17 drawcalls. That means that converting this model would not be a practical solution. The Sketchup models are just too complex.
There is another commercial model which is even more complex and too expensive:
http://www.the3dstudio.com/download_image.ashx?size=large&mode=product&file_guid=d89ae63c-796c-4d3a-95e2-48c3ae3178db
However, it should be quite possible to make a simplified model. You basically need a bottom piece for the floor, a cube for the enclosed section, two benches for the open section, four pieces for the roof, an elongated cube for the cupola, front and back pieces, a roof to go over the cupolo, and two panels for the wheels. This would be a static model.
Perhaps someone who understands animations could do a simple animation where it moves back and forth, so you could place it on a hill and have it move up and down the hill.
Perhaps someone who understand vehicles (Fresh Prince, Bloom) could make a replacement for the taxis.
But even a simplified static model could look pretty cool.

If you take it apart, you will find that it has way too many vertices and polygons. Something like 60k and 50k respectively. This is too many for a game object.
I suspect if you redid it and simplified it, you could come in at well under 1000 polygons. Besides, converting a Sketchup model is not all that easy. It's usually easier to build it from scratch.

I found another model on the warehouse, yet it contained two cars connected, so I deleted one. Then the model wasn't so heavy. Opened it in blender, converted to .obj, then opened in Milkshape, scaled, exported to .obj again, opened the file in UV Mapper, generated box uv map, exported both the map and saved the model again. Was tweaking the texture for almost 2 hours.

No, it will not replace the normal taxi but the lightweight taxi from Night Life.
So you need to have NL, and create a city were the taxies popup by default.
I dont know if the NL taxi is tuneable(XML?) because you get kinda spammed with them in a city
If you guys know how to handle a texture editor you can easily export the texture with s3PE
Edit it(make the green red), export as DXT5interpolatedalpha DDS and import back into the package.
@Monsoon, the file is pretty easy
You can export the textures, Mlods and Modl in s3PE and use them for a object in CAW.(you might want to install Atevera's helpers aswell, for s3PE)
I would take the lowpolygons tho, the characters make it a bit heavier

Great job so far, and a great city to cover, San Francisco is so diverse, with modern architecture and older, Victorian homes side-by-side, its a great place!
One question though, how many lots, well, usable lots, not occupied by CC; are in this world? Or how many are you planning to have? :)
Also, are the homes on the sides of Lombard Street individual lots, or one big lot, using the Apartment markers to separate the residences? Thanks so much for a great work thus far, looking very promising :)

Its going to be great when seasons come, and its rains and storms in the city. Then fall enters, and then Winter, how cool is that christmas in the city with you're sims. Also aliens come to San Francisco.

I wonder if there's a population mod in the sims 3 where u can have lots and lots of sims walking the streets and not going anywhere. Pretty much NPC sims walking around.
If there is such a mod u should add it. Good luck !!! :gjob:

If you're considering making the Seven Sisters/Painted Ladies, then it might be helpful to have a look at the interior of one of them; The Shannon-Kavanaugh House (the end one), you can see the interior pics from when it was for sale here: http://www.oldhousedreams.com/2010/07/30/1892-victorian-san-francisco-ca/
Old House Dreams is a great blog for old houses and inspiration (it's my other guilty pleasure, with the other being MTS!) But I just thought this may be helpful should you decide to build the Painted Ladies/Seven Sisters, Great work so far, a little suggestion I have would be to maybe consider adding an attempt at Angelino Heights (if you haven't done so already) it's arguably one of the other most famous parts of San Francisco, I think Ouerbacker has already recreated an incredibly realistic version of a house from Carrol Avenue (Angelino Heights), so you might want to speak to them and see if you can 'borrow' it. I think you'll find it here: http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=457976&c=1&ht=&page=23&pp=25#startcomments

Feel free to laugh at my ignorance/stupidity.
You're right, I feel so stupid. I got a little carried away. Geography wasn't my strong point at school, I struggled with just the geography of my own country (England). I'll refrain from making even more of a fool of myself in the future. But you're doing well with your world so far.
:gjob:
EDIT: I remembered why I thought Angelino heights was in SF, it's all because of 'Charmed' which I've recently started watching, they use a house that's in Angelino Heights and then pretend it's actually in SF. :faceslap:

It doesn't matter if it is her thread or not.. if you disregard the rules, she will have to take action to it and set you straight. And constantly bumping a thread that isn't your's isn't helping.. it's spamming, which is considered to be against the rules. So please, read the forum rules before trying to go against them. Despite my earlier confusion and embarassment due to 'Charmed' being set in SF but filmed at a house in Angelino Heights, LA, I've found some houses which might be of interest if you are stuck for inspiration on residential lots for SF, courtesey of Old House Dreams. I probably spend more time admiring the houses on that site and also on MTS than I do in college, but still, I hope these will be of some help and inspiration, sorry if you've seen any of them already, I just thought they might help if you were stuck when it came to creating lots/housing.
Here they are:

Now, after a while I have some more time to spend on the world. I just wanted to check how it looks covered with snow (gotta admit it looks gorgeous), when a weird thing occured. Half of the city is unroutable for some reason. Checked the routing in CAW, rebuilt it multiple times, but there's a straight red line running right trough the Downtown making sims unable to walk there. What's worst, I don't know what it is caused by.
Got some pics showing the problem:
http://imageshack.us/a/img17/9886/caw2012112314463715.jpg

Alright, after some investigation there is ONE thing causing this in my 'Objects' layer and ONE in the 'Deco Buildings'. There are hundreds of items in both of them, have to find the right ones...
Daniel
24th Nov 2012, 03:09 AM
Whenever I see these, it's from the footprint of a particularly large item. For example, the train tunnel in CAW has an extremely large footprint (some of the deco buildings I use also). I don't see though, in your pictures, anything overlapping the roads, much less that large blank area where the routing is destroyed. When you click on individual deco buildings, do any of them have disproportionately large footprints in relation to their size?
Monsoon
24th Nov 2012, 12:21 PM
None seems to have, yet there have to be at least two broken decos, cause deleting the two layers mentioned before solves the problem. Unless I find the reason, I'll have to delete all the objects contained in them and place them once again.

You should add deco cars driving around the city like taxis, food truck vans, and other vehicles so SF can get that city feel http://sf.streetsblog.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/01_29/Bus_in_traffic.jpg ,http://thewrenproject.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/streets-of-san-francisco.jpghttp://a.scpr.org/i/bd17c3e788858049fe1b0859aacd34e3/43541-six.jpg
Just a thought, it would be kind of cool.... u already have the cable car.
Monsoon
18th Jan 2013, 10:54 AM
There is no way to do that, it is only possible to have one model of a deco vehicle driving around, default taxis, but with the package Bloom created, these will turn into cable cars. Placing enough food truck parking spaces will make them travel from time to time between them. That's all I can do.
