Hi,
I had to re-install the sims 2 from scratch because I messed up my game. I installed all expansions in the correct order & all automatic updates were successfull. My question is do I need to install the patches listed at Simprograms or did the automatic updater install all needed patches? If I need patches, is it ok to install them after all expansions are installed or should I have installed the patches while I was installing expansion packs?

You'll probably need more of the patches. I don't believe that auto-update does them all. There's no harm in patching something twice.

It should be OK to patch all of your EPs after installing all of them. The patch knows which EP it's trying to patch and should have no problems finding it.

How do I know which patches I already have & which ones I need?

An easy way is to download and install all of the patches.

I suppose that there's some other way to determine which patches were installed. You'd probably have to find the version number for each patch and then check the properties of each EXE to see whether the version numbers match... Of course, patches can patch things other than the game EXE, but you could assume that the other files have been correctly patched if the EXE was patched.

Personally, I'd just install all of the patches. That's what I do.
