In short, my problem is that CAS freezes, starting after installing new CC, but continuing to do so even when it's been removed. :help:

Details:

So, yesterday I went on a bit of a CC binge and downloaded a LOT of stuff.

Later, when I loaded the game and went into CAS, it froze when going from 1 (name/gender/age/skin) to 3 (face/eyes/hair). Obviously, related to a DL causing issues, right?

So I remove EVERYTHING, and start adding it back in, bit by bit, with the least likely things first and the newest stuff last. Each time, I am able to move from 1 to 3 without freezing. In the end, I'm left with 3 things, 2 default clothing replacements and 1 thing that recolours all the roof edges and undersides to white.

I try two of them together, it freezes again. I can't be bothered to figure out which it was, and I don't really need any of them, so I toss all three and go back to playing the game.

CAS freezes.

So, I figure it's just too much new stuff for the game to load at once. I pull out CC based on category, and stick them back in folder at a time, with the worst offenders for size save until the end. Each time, it starts freezing again near the end of the pile.

--- interesting note, when it was borderline, I could get from 1-3 in a male, but not if I was making a female.

So, I start culling by size. Dump all but 3 hairstyles, SERIOUSLY reduce clothing, etc.

Nothing seems to help.

Eventually I create a file with only my Top Priority CC - eyes & default eye replacements, face replacements (hate the maxis faces), skins, and a couple other things, including hacks, and try to play with just those. Left out my replacement pollination techs & plantsim dads, altheticwear, etc. (It usually froze when I put my full Default replacements folder in.)

Freezing. :faceslap:

So, now it's only the ABSOLUTE minimum for me to want to play this game. 2 folders: Yumedust eyes (not even the default replacements, just the eyes, which have been in my game forever) and default face replacements.

I go in, and it's working! Hurray! I'll play around for a bit and figure out later what I can add back. :gjob:

I successfully create a sim. About to save & return to the neighbourhood, decide to change her mouth. GO back it. Change from 1-3 okay. click on mouth.

FREEZE.

   I just can't do this anymore. I need help. I just want to play my game again.

What is your graphics card?

I did not read all that (running on fumes today), but if you haven't done so already, I'd suggest you pull all the recently-downloaded CC, then delete your cache files and thumbnail files. (The files inside the Thumbnails folder - not the folder itself.) Test. If all is well then, add your new CC back in a little at a time and test. If you get it ALL back in, and things are still functioning properly, delete thumbnail files again. Sometimes those thumbnail files need to be refreshed after a bunch of new stuff has been added.

Graphics: Intel GMA 950

I've had this computer & the SIms 2 on it for 3-4 years, so I don't think its a graphics thing.

Darby: I did delete my thumbnails folder twice during this process because of thumbs getting corrupted (probably the manual shutdown), but I'll do it how you suggested and see if it helps.

I once had a crashing problem that I was certain was in the downloads, until I proved it wasn't. Before moving on to the New User Data step, I realized I hadn't removed my Saved Sims folder, which only contained sims I'd extracted myself in SimPE. Once I did, my problem resolved.

Which makes no sense and you probably did remove the Saved Sims folder with the other downloads, but hey, for what it's worth...Corruption by its nature makes no sense.

Okay, I think this issue is definitely related to thumbnails. After deleting them, the game froze again on going from 1-3 (wheras before I could do that, just not go into mouths and possible some of sub-tabs in 3; hair, eyes and jaws were okay for sure) I was like, duh, remove the last bits of CC first. So I did that, deleted the thumbnails again, and tried with nothing in my download folder, and it froze. With nothing.

I remember that I actually deleted my thumbnails right before this all began, it was the last thing I did. (I had default clothing replacements and the makers suggested doing so to create correct thumbnails for them)

I'm going to try again, see if it works after a reboot.

Has anyone ever heard of deleting thumbnails causing problems, possibly on macs specifically?

Peni Griffin: I'm not sure about this. The file structure is different on a Mac, and I've only ever downloaded one sim, about 2 year ago. I searched for a Saved Sims folder, but there's nothing on my computer.

Okay, no. CAS is broken now, even with everything gone. I'm gonna put all my CC back so I can at least play the sims I created with them in the meantime.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this so I might one day be able to create new sims again?

Weird, and I don't think the Body Shop Help FAQ (http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Body_Shop) addresses it.

The main Game Problem Help FAQ (http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Game_Problem) might have a solution - I don't know. One thing I'd definitely try is to remove your existing game file altogether, let the game generate a fresh set of files, and see if CAS works properly in a completely vanilla game. If it does, you'll know that CAS isn't actually broken, and that it IS something you've added and just haven't pinpointed yet.

Darby, you're definitely on to something here. I did what you suggested and CAS worked again, both blank and with the first couple folders of CAS added back. It froze again after I re-added Default Replacements, so I'm going to redo the process, cutting out all the DRs unless I'm 100% sure I've had them for a while.

I'm going to call this Solved, or at least it's as solved as its going to get.

ETA: I eventually managed to get it working properly after leaving out Clothing & Clothing-related CC, which I'm quite happy with. In the future, I'll make a back up before I DL anything. :)

Glad you got it working again. :gjob:
