Is it safe to create a archetype sim for surgery then delete it from the sim bin immediately afterwards?

No. It's not 100% safe. Any sim in the Sim Bin has been added to the neighborhood. Because of this, the neighborhood can have references to that sim. Those references will become invalid when the sim is deleted.
You may be lucky and have no problems, but there's no way to be sure that it's safe.
If you want to be completely safe, then a better bet is to create your archetype sim in a separate neighborhood and use Theo's Alternative Sim Surgery Plugin. Be sure that you download the latest version and follow the instructions.

An alternative is to properly delete the sim using this method:

Thanks. Well that's a pain. I suppose I could take an existing sim I've made and try to restyle them to appear like a new sim.

Yes, it really is a pain that we can't delete sims safely inside of the game.
Note that I was probably updating my post with additional information while you were posting. I've given you two alternatives, both of which should be safe.

Thanks Mootilda. That sounds painful. I swear I've read several times you can just delete them. I did three before doing this thread but made a backup first so I'll revert. I changed the nannies and butler into adults to make them faster and one nanny I replaced with a teen and she would turn up when I called but wouldn't get out of the car. So I turned her into a teen but set her as an adult and it worked.
Definitely being able to load from another neighbourhood is the best option. The other deleting method seems complicated and slow.

Yes, I've seen people insist that you can delete sims from the Sim Bin, delete character files, delete tombstones, add Mrs. Crumplebottom to your family, etc. Unfortunately, the internet is full of misinformation.

But the sim bin and family bin aren't the same thing. The Sim Bin is the template sims in CAS, where your Saved Sims appear; the Family Bin is actually in the game.
If deleting sims from the sim bin isn't safe, then the Game Help FAQ wouldn't tell us to empty our Saved Sim folder as part of the trouble shooting process.

People always call the in-game Family Bin "the Sim Bin". If you're talking about a different Sim Bin associated with CAS, then I don't know anything. Sorry for the confusion.
My understanding is that Sim Surgery in SimPE requires the archetype to be in the neighborhood. The Alternate Sim Surgery Plugin doesn't. We are talking about Sim Surgery in SimPE, aren't we?

Yes it should have read family bin. I'm still learning the lingo. I downloaded Theo's alternate sim surgery and am making a few service NPCs to try it out soon.

Good. I think that the alternate sim surgery plugin is a good choice.
Just to reiterate: The instant a sim is added to a neighborhood, it becomes unsafe to delete (unless you use the Deleted 2 method from MATY). Sims in the Family Sim (aka Sim Bin) have been added to your neighborhood, so they are not safe to delete.

I've found with the alt surgery tool, that the sim will load up as a black shadow. Hole? Something like that. Not to panic, though, now what did I do? I want to say exit to the neighborhood, but there might have been a change appearance then exit to neighborhood, or something like that.

When you downloaded Theo's Alt Sim Surgery did you put all the files in the plugin folder? And make sure it's the latest version?
It worked fine for me but the maid's hair and skintone didn't change nor the burglar's outfit. Is it possible to do these aswell?

After reading the thread on MATY, it looks like the shadow sim happens randomly for no apparent reason, and can be fixed by deleting the sim and teleporting them back. But anyway, I tested it on Cassandra Goth yesterday, just for fun and it worked. She looks completely different and I have no useless sims cluttering up my hood. ^^

Thanks that's ok when I've finished my NPCs I'll play around with it. I invited the buglar over to see if I could change the outfit and wondered if befriending them would make them less or more likely to rob you. You know they either have a moral dilemna about it or just makes it easy to case the joint out. But she came over and paid for some stuff that she'd bought earlier then wanted to leave. Honest crook she is.
Off topic: has anyone ever tried to make residential lots visitable. When the screen comes up and you can choose community or hobby lot logically from a layman's pov if the 'residential' option was made available you could visit them. I'm sure somebody attempted this, I wonder how far they got to making it reality. I know there is the call someone and 'make selectable' option, which is basically the same thing but requires 2 loading screens (if it's the same neighbourhood).

There's a mod available at BackAlleySims (an adult site) which is supposed to allow sims to visit other families.

Wow that is so awesome. The adult rating must be why it is not listed on the hack content list on this site. Which is a shame as it is not an adult related hack and one most people would like. Especially helpful when starting a home business that noone can shop at.
You can visit apartments too.

We allow 18+ stuff (and sites) to be listed on the content list, they just have to have (18+) at the end of the link, so folks know what they're getting into. Feel free to add that one if it's been overlooked. :)

I can't get it to work. Not enough experience to understand what it does and why it's not working. I downloaded some modding tutorials that will hopefully help. I altered my first mod the other day which I was very proud of. It's the menstration mod (titled period hack) from this site which makes the menstral cycle occur every 4 days. I managed to make it 7 days which is a major improvement. I don't know how to extend the frequency past a week yet.
On the up side I found a mod on this site that makes the NPCs wear casual clothes so they will turn up with whichever outfit and hairstyle they are cloned with using Alternative Sim Surgery. Now I can't find it again.
