So if you love a trait just explain why basically.
I love the workaholic trait because sims can work from home. They can work towards their next promotion!

Neurotic, because you can have them freak out or check a tap and then they have a good moodlet to get them through the day.

I like the ones that make skilling or friend-making easier, like genius, bookworm, and charismatic.

I inevitably choose generically positive traits that won't encourage wants for game activities I don't enjoy. Things like genius, charismatic, bookworm, natural cook, adventurous, and green thumb. (Positive traits I avoid: athletic, family-oriented.)
I avoid traits that inhibit Sim behaviors like Loves/Hates the Outdoors (unless I know my Sim is going to be a farmer or angler, in which case, the benefit of loving the outdoors slightly outweighs the annoyance of those times they have to be inside), technophobe, vegetarian, hydrophobic.
When I first played Ambitions, I thought it would be fun to have an absent-minded eccentric genius inventor. Never again. NEVER again.

I like the brave trait because there is no need to call the fire fighters and its very convient for tomb exploring!

I love the Bookworm trait. And the Good Sense of Humour one. I tend to use positive ones most, but I do use Slob, Couch Potato and a few other less beneficial ones quite often too.
I also have quite a lot of vegetarian sims, which I expect is because I'm a vegetarian myself in RL. Haven't looked at the new recipes that came with Showtime yet, but they looked interesting. It's nice that my selfsim can eat tofu dogs now, even though I hate tofu in RL (but do like Quorn).... :-) And there are bananas! Yum....

I love the workaholic trait because my sims don't come back from work all stressed and moody; I can make them skill.
I also le the brave trait so I son't need to buy alarms (my sims are always poor).
I love trait that help my sims to improve skilling like bookworm, artist, virtuoso, natural cook or green thumb.
I avoid every trait that give you bad moodlet because you messed something up like vegetarian, hydrophobic, technophobe, eco-friendly, ambitious...
I also avoid useless traits like daredevil, light/heavy sleeper...
I never use negative trait like mean, evil, absent-minded...
All in all my sims always share the same traits

I like bookworm, genius, computer whiz, ambitious, and either friendly or loner (depending on plans for later becoming a parent). Surprisingly, I do NOT feel like i'm playing the same sim twenty times in a row! I've used the same combo for a hacker ("employed" as a fisherman, snicker, snicker), a writer whose LTW was the more difficult "professional author", an inventor whose LTW was "tinker", a "Jack of all Trades" woman who ended up with six kids before the save corrupted, all from teen down to toddler, and a BUNCH of others.

I love the Evil trait, it's actually MUCH more useful then first meets the eye. A few examples.
-If you have twins or triplets, put their cribs in the same room, they'll get a positive fiendishly delighted moodlet whenever their siblings cry over a dirty diaper or a low motive. Bad parenting actually pays off if you just feed the crying baby, and come back half an hour later when the second baby cries over being hungry.
-You can get a fiendishly delighted moodlet any time for $100 undermining a charity.
-If you play for tips or something out in public for hours, getting a big crowd of people, you're bound to see someone suffer and get the fiendishly delighted moodlet.
Also I like No Sense of Humor (fun moodlets for twice as long), and hates the outdoors (never go stir crazy from staying home all the time).

I like to use: Charasmatic, Ambitious, Loves the Outdoors, Good Sense of Humor, Bookworm. These, to me, make the "perfect" sim.

It really depends on what type of sim I am making and the careers I want them to have. Lately I've been choosing charismatic, friendly, and good sense of humor. I also like using bookworm, neurotic, and computer wiz. I rarely use light sleeper, slob, vegetarian, or unlucky. I do get a kick out of evil trait and the fiendishly delighted moodlet.

Loves the outdoors....IRL i love fishing...yard work...fits right in with me seeing that moodlet...
i also love the way sims act when you give them insane...neurotic...snob :)

9th Apr 2012, 06:47 AM
Slob trait is actually a positive, because they never get a bad moodlet from unclean surroundings, and can satisfy hunger by licking dirty plates :)
I always pick at least one trait that will help in their job/profession (love skilling traits in general), and in most cases give at least one social trait, because it makes relationship building easier (friendly, charismatic, hopeless romantic, family oriented, nurturing, good sense of humor and/or great kisser). And one of the animal lover traits for pet owners. Unless of course the sim is a loner, which is a great trait for most self-employed sims.
Traits like excitable, easily impressed, dramatic, and diva come with the potential for added good moodlets and have some fun animations and interactions.

I make most of my sims nice and positive, but still with their own individiualities. The most frequently used traits are: friendly, charismatic, good, good sense of humor, neat, workaholic, ambitious, flirty, genious. I also use commitment issues quite often, maybe because I have commitment issues myself, and I can not imagine how it feels to have one relationship or do one job all the time, LOL. Each sims also has a trait that meakes her/him special, or helps in the career: virtuoso, photographer's eye, natural born cook, vehicle enthusiast, computer whiz, vegeterian, cat person, etc. However, if would be BORING if everyone were so perfect, so here are the most frequently used negative traits: hot-headed, snob, slob. Extremely bad traits (evil, mean-spirited, insane) are rare, but still, there must be a few sims in the town, who have them, it is fun :) I also rarely pick traits that make sims behave in annoying ways: loner (can't get them to community lots without getting a bad moodlet), Insane (they're inappropriately dressed, like, almost always; I don't want sims walking around in pajamas), loves/hates outdoors (they want to be inside/outside all the time), family oriented (they want to breed like rabbits, but I don't let them to, 3 kids are enough, 4 are more than enough, I had only 1 goy have so many, 3 with the first wife, 1 with the second wife), technophobic (the most annoying trait, they can't stand any devices, but hell, how can they live without them? They get bad moodlets from TVs and radios working, from computers, etc).

Neat: To save having to get a maid
Neurotic: It's just fun to have.
Friendly: to make it easier to make friends
But I also love using evil and mean spirited. I like it when there is a sim running around being angry and enemies with everyone.
I generally also choose traits based on what job I want them to have.

Klepto!!! I LOVE stealing statues from important places through town and then placing them on my lot. Too funny.
Virtuoso, just because I play music myself.

I love flirty and hopeless romantic a good 60% of my sims get one of those traits. I like genius too but I don't use it as often because I feel it would cheapen it.
I don't particularly like athletic but I love disciplined.
I just started a family of thieves and I love Klepto they all have it its cery useful
and Lucky/Unlucky I like them both I feel they are oddly realistic once again I use them sparingly.

I love the insane trait, simply because everything these sims do is so much fun to watch. And I love how they are randomly changing clothes, walking into town in their swimsuits and wearing formal wear around the house for no reason.

I generally like a ratio of 2 negative traits to 3 positive traits. Making sims that are perfect Mary-Sues just bore me.
However, I like Insane and Neurotic the most. I'm not that right in the head and I need my pixel dolls to relate with me like that.

I like charismatic skill the best. It comes with a skill challange award (don't remember how it's called exactly) that allow you to be good friend with someone immediately after first conversation. Then once you got plenty of good friends (which isn't hard to achieve with the skill just mentioned), the relationship can be locked. No drop of relationships means no need to waste time keeping in touch with ppl just for the sake of having them stay as friend. I found it very useful.
I also like neat trait, because it comes with the action "clean house". So no need to order my sims cleaning dishes, making bed, cleaning toliet, etc. separately. Just one command serve all. For this reason, I almost always have one sim with neat trait in each of my household.

One problem I always have with trait choices are the limited slots. Without a mod, you're stuck at 5 for YA. I like certain parts of the two traits you mention, but there are ways around using up a slot just for those benefits.
Being able to clean house, which is a nice action, can be implemented by any sim using Buzzler's mod, here http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=411634
I always get the "long distance friend" LTR as quickly as possible. It lets all relationships remain at the last level of interaction. No need for follow up calls, and as your charisma skill increases, you'll find yourself becoming instant friend/good friend with the first introduction.
Maybe it's being a bit too strategic, but by being limited to only 5 traits, I tend to choose those that give benefits that can't be obtained any other way, such as fighting burglars and fires with the brave trait. Then again, I typically overuse flirty and great kisser.

Loner, because loner Sims would less likely integrate themselves to the pudding society and fill up their relationship panels with pudding faces I don't wanna see.

I like almost all of the traits and depending on what sort of sim I want, I use almost all of them. In fact, traits are a very strong plus in TS3 for me. Even some traits people consider negative can be a positive if you want a certain kind of sim. I would never make an inventor who wasn't a slob, for instance I want them to be happy digging around at the junkyard and not whining to go home because they are dirty. There are also traits I like to pick for no other reason than I love the idle animations. I've mentioned it several times, but the new Diva trait amuses me to no end.
It's funny though, because some traits I like for reasons that aren't really what the dev team was probably going for. For instance, while I rarely give the trait to sims, I like eco-friendly because the sim gets lots of extra friendly interactions that he can use. The last time I had a sim on the political track, eco-friendly helped him win over friends who had no sense of humor, or didn't like any sort of "enthuse" or "discuss" interaction. (I think sometimes there is a "picky as hell" hidden trait in NPC sims that makes them reject almost every social interaction.)
There are only a few traits I really hate:
Clumsy (the animation takes too long and it's not that funny to me)
Dislikes Children (only because I think it's poorly made. I think they should dislike babies and toddlers too. I also think they should get a bad moodlet while pregnant and a bad moodlet after giving birth)
Light sleeper (doesn't add anything to the gameplay except get the sim constantly annoyed)
Mean Spirited (I hate that you can't leave the sim on idle without him starting a fight. Grumpy and Inappropriate do this too, but not nearly as much. I know that's the whole point of the trait, but I'm not into it.)
Shy (I don't HATE this trait, but I find it annoying. I had a sim dad who was shy around his newborn baby and I thought that was a bit overkill)
Vehicle Enthusiast (Only because this trait doesn't DO anything at all. This annoys me enough that sometimes I will re-assign a random trait to the poor NPC sim that got it because it's basically a blank slot)

From what I've seen, my vehicle enthusiasts can name their cars immediately, and build a relationship with the car more quickly.
Non-vehicle enthusiasts can only name the car after they have built a pretty good relationship with it, and that seems to take a long time.

Thanks for the link! If this mod works well for me (I'm still on patch 1.26 and no intention to upgrade soon), then I possbily will get rid of the neat trait. I hate it when my neat sims always want to clean her dish when others are still eating. It's more efficient to have the last sim clean all dishes together.
Yeah, I agree 5 traits really aren't enough. Especially for the skill traits, once you've at the top of the skill and fulfilled all achievements, they are just wasting slots. I wish there is a way to switch to all personality traits at this point (without losing any awards, though).
PS: Never ever tried great kisser traits. I don't know how it's useful aside from... kisses =D

@Simsample - Ahh I didn't know about the enthusisasts getting it sooner. Because I play legacy style AND I'm a cheapskate, I have cars in the game that are several generations old, so they all are best friends with the car. I kinda don't see what's so cool about befriending the car anyway.
Diva comes with showtime. It did not come with the patch. I don't know why I love it. I think of it as the "drag queen" trait - SASSY!
Also wanted to mention that thanks to Buzzler's "clean house for everyone" mod, I almost never get the neat trait except to make a neat freak sim. I LOVE THAT MOD, BUZZLER!

KleptoManiac- Useful for starting a legacy when you have no money.
Neat - Gives you the option to "Clean entire house." and they have wishes to "Make the bed, clean the dishes etc." Which are super easy to fulfill.
Charismatic- I like the political career and the journalism career.
Workaholic - Avoids the "stressed" moodlet so they can "power work" forever, which usually results in promotion.
Insane- The things my sims do are hilarious. & They get full hygiene for having a bath in the sink. :3
Evil, Grumpy and neurotic. (Only when I feel like it. :3)

I try to use most, even if some of them I won't pick on my own again, like Grumpy or Absent Minded. That's just annoying.
I do seem to use Excitable, Charismatic, and Athletic more often than not. Also Lucky and Brave. But all positive traits makes for a dull Sim. So I like to spice it up with some Evil, Commitment Issues, Snob, Unflirty, Loner and so on. Inappropriate is also good fun. Turns that unpredictability up a bit. Insane turns it up a little too much, though. Still, points for fishing in pools and actually catching a fish. I should maybe make a crazy-awesome Sim at some point. Awesome because it's crazy.
However, I try to get townie sims into the family every generation, and some of those do have some "interesting" trait combinations at times.

I usually go with good traits but one of my most interesting and fun sims is hot headed, insane, klepto, evil and absent minded. She usually goes to work in her formal wear, she works at the grave yard and usually chooses her athletic wear for sleeping which wouldn't be too bad if she didn't have trainers on lol. I let her do whatever she wants most of the time just to see what she will do, when she moved into the neighbourhood with her brother Odin was one of the three who came to welcome them and they instantly hated each other.

Twallan's Mastercontroller will let you add more than 5 traits, and change the traits a Sim has. As far as I know you don't lose any awards...
My favorite trait to use is excitable, they seem easier to please. I will never, ever use absent minded again. If I could have reached through the screen that would have been one dead-beyond-any-hope-of-resurrection sim.

hehe probly I'm absentminded and I don't even remember what it does and I have it as a trait for both myself and one of my men (which I play with a lot because he's insane and I love watching him talk to himself)
anyway I think the ones I use the most are friendly, good sense of humor and great kisser (if I have enough space). friendly is good because anyone I like IRL would most likely be friendly and I don't want to make someone that I'm not going to like IRL because let's face it Sims IS my second life..well ok maybe my third because internet always comes first (although I might some day want the devil in Sims just to have something different but that would be hard to make. I actually had an idea for a story involving theological beings but I never wrote it down so maybe I can incorporate it into Sims instead)
good sense of humor because it's nice to have the other people laugh at the jokes.
great kisser because the more irresistible one is in the relationship the better.

Kleptomaniac, something about stealing from extremely wealthy EAxis made sims is... extremely pleasing. (evil smiley doesn't exist, sadly.)
Oh, and Evil. I adore the Evil trait, I was laughing for minutes when my sim went to "wash hands with evil soap." Though, am I the only one who expects sims to get naked and tuck in their manhood when "Evil Dance" is selected?

I'm stuck on Green Thumb, Loves the Outdoors, and Bookworm at the moment. I do love Insane sims, my fave being a beautiful black man (don't give me shit about using the term, he's based on a friend who despises the term "African American") I named Herbacious Jones. He is, of course, a Green Thumb and also an Animal Lover and his interactions and animations keep me in stitches. I love him so much I put him in every game I play now, and end up marrying him about 60% of the time :D
I cannot play my selfsim very often as she's Absent Minded and I hatehateHATE that trait...almost as much in Sims as I hate it in myself LOL I didn't even care when she burnt the house down and killed herself and my husband's selfsim because she left food on the stove in one game (me being absent minded forgot to pause when I went to get food).
If I intend to travel with a couple I always make one of them a Great Kisser, just for the mood boost when they first get there. I don't bother with Charismatic much, or with the Charisma skill, because I long ago modded the Long-distance Friend LTR to only cost 5000 pts since I am not a social person IRL so I tend to forget to make my sims socialize with anyone not in their household. Loner would be great except that for whatever reason they don't like drinking nectar (WTF?) and I love making it in game. The Heavy/Light Sleeper traits are useless and I hate Vehicle Enthusiast almost as much as Absent Minded because it's so pointless. Friends with your car, seriously??
Oh, and Kelptos are awesome! Except that I tend to forget they're kleptos and not steal stuff until they get the wish for it...oops LOL
