View Full Version : CAW - Can't erase terrain
14th Apr 2012, 6:44 PM
Hi, for the past 2 days i've been collecting resources so I can try and make the perfect worl for me... but everytime I actually get to "trying" it never works out because I can't seem to get past the basics... sculpting the actual shape of my world. I've reinstalled, and followed every video, but I just cant seem to get the "land" to turn into water, so i'm stuck with a huge boring square. Which sucks because in my perfect world things would certainly not be square and lagoon free! Has anyone encountered this problem or am I the only one :S?
Thanks to all the rotating and zooming in and out, i'm feeling dizzy @.@

Well a little update... apparently if you zoom out too much you cant "erase" terrain. Another thing that I noticed is, it's not working on Large Maps. On Medium it works fine. Also, on large when it does work, I can see the terrain under the water, so it looks more like a clear body of water, that isnt deep at all.. and greeny.
Edit: Now it's doing it on the "meidum" terrain again! Just my luck >.>. I cant get the one I want, and now I cant even get my 2nd option?

To make the water appear, you need to lower your terrain using one of the valley tools as opposed to erasing it. You can also raise the height of the water to make the land deeper under water. Use terrain paint on the sea/lake bed to make it muddy or sandy or whatever.
Have you read this tutorial?
If you post some pictures of what you have done then we will find it easier to help you. Also, you can use the edit button to modify your post rather than posting twice in a row, :)

Thanks a lot for the reply ^^. Actually, i've been using the Valey tool, I guess "erasing" is the wrong term when referring to terrain erasing shaping thing... lol...
Yup, I have read the tutorials, I have so amny tutorials bookmarked/open I cant even see my normal webpages @.@.
Anyway, since I couldnt get my valey tool to work on the Large lot, I went for the medium and it's working (seems to be fine now).
I'm sorry for the silly questions, this is my first time ever using the program or anything like this, so even tutorials look gibberish to me :giggler:
Thanks for the tip, I only saw the edit button after posting for a second time. Sorry :P

We don't mind questions, we all have to learn and we're all beginners at some point! ;)
For the large terrain, it could be that you just weren't zoomed in enough. Most of the tools are only available for your active chunk, so you have to be quite close to make them work.
For your clear water, that looks as though you have turned fog off. Turn it back on and your water should look normal. It should also look fine in-game, although if the water is shallow you will see the riverbed and so should paint it. :)

In looking at your picture, I don't know if you were off the edge of the land just for picture taking purposes, but I have had problems with the tools working if the camera is over the edge of the map and over open water.

Thanks a lot simsample, that fixed both my issues :P
I was trying to alter that part of the terrain, which is why my camera was there, but i've also come across the issue you described lol, even with painting the terrain if the camera is at a certain angle and distance it won't work, whereas it might work somewhere else. Doesn't really bother me though :P.

Well done for fixing things!
CAW has a lot of little nuances that take a while to get used to. :)
