EDIT: I think I've solved the problem; it's plugged into the same socket that we had a problem with a few months ago (2 separate lamps kept turning off and on when plugged into said socket). I've changed sockets now so we'll see if it happens again.
Hi
13 days ago I bought a new (refurbished but from a reputable company) which keeps turning itself off briefly.
It's happened 4 times in 13 days. They have a no questions asked, 21 day returns and refund policy if the computer develops a fault but I first want to know if this problem is something really simple or does, in fact, need returning.
Basically, 4 times my computer has turned it self off. On 3 of those occasions, my screen dims rapidly, then goes black. The tower unit's button goes orange and nothing works. Pressing keyboard buttons or clicking the mouse doesn't turn it back on. Then, after a few seconds, the light will go blue on the tower unit, my screen will come back on, and my computer is exactly as it was before it turned off; webpages still open, programs still running. No restarting or rebooting as you'd expect from a total shut down.
On one occasion, however, the computer did apparently turn completely off. The screen dimmed quickly and went black. This was only the second time this happened so I tried wiggling the power cords, monitor cord, pushing on plugs to make sure they were in etc thinking that something simple like that had happened but nothing worked. That was when I looked at the tower unit and realised it was completely off. I pressed the on button and it came on as normal, but went through the whole start up process like it would when it'd had been shut down.
As far as I'm aware, there has been nothing running in the background that would cause a restart. No updates that automatically restart your computer unless you postpone it type thing.
I really am completely clueless as to what's causing this. It seems strange that on one occasion, it turned off completely, but on others it just sort of powered down for a second then returned to how it was like nothing happened.
At first, I thought it was just a simple sleep/hibernate/screen saver issue but I turned this features off the first time it happened so I know it isn't that.
I'm planning on phoning the company tomorrow but I'd like to be a bit clearer about how major this problem is as I don't want to be talked into getting it repaired if it's a major issue as it's already refurbished so I'm weary that this is just the beginning of all sorts of problems.
So, does this sound like a major issue or something simple to fix? For the most part, I'm actually quite satisfied with this computer in most other ways. The only other problem I've noticed is that when playing the Sims 2, I sometimes get weird... blockyness/artifacts, especially when panning/rotating the cameras. I have since updated my graphics drivers, however but haven't played yet to test if it's still occuring, so that could be a total non-issue but I thought it worth it to mention it.
Can anyone offer me any advice?
Thanks in advance
