custom poses and how they're used in game

Apologies if this info exists elsewhere--I took a look around but couldn't find it!

I'm wondering about custom poses: Once you've downloaded and installed them, are they incorporated into random gameplay, or can you only use them with a pose player program? In other words, will your Sims do the poses as part of normal gameplay, or only if you specifically "pose" them to take pictures with one of those pose player programs?

I guess I'm trying to understand the purpose behind poses. Are they just so you can take pictures of your Sims doing interesting things? Or can they actually "do" those poses while they're active?

Poses are done on command by using a pose player. It wouldn't be too much use for sims to autonmously pose, as they're "frozen" and can't be interacted with while they're posing.
