View Full Version : Single Bed Meshing?

What I found odd about meshing with a single bed is that it only comes with two groups.. one group is the mattress and frame together and the other group is the shadow group.

How am I supposed to UV map and assign joints to this with all of the features of the bed compiled into one group?
I'm using TSR Workshop if that helps, but the s3oc's single bed that I am using has the same "issue."

Well, that is how its done on most meshes.
They were not build to mod but to play with and compiling the diffrent parts into one will result in faster gameplay and less errors.
Regrouping the parts you want to keep is the first step, deleting the ones you dont want the 2nd. :)
I wouldn't use TSRW for it tho as its Milkshape export plugin doesn't support 4 joints per vertex.(unless you want to do the boneassignements in TSRW itself ofcourse)

I see. :/ I not creating a new mesh, though, just simply modifying this one. Once I export it to UV map it as an .obj, I loose all of the joints unless I put it back into the original mesh.. but there's no way for me to assign the frame to the correct joint after I've done that. I might just have to go without modifying the single bed instead.

there are ways to bring back the boneassignements altho i never tried it on a bed.
If you have the mesh with boneassignements in milkshape but want to edit it as obj in another editor you should first save the file as objx (part of Wes his sims 2 unimesh tool.)
When you later import the obj file back in MS you import that objx file aswell, then you have all joint assignements back.
It does only work when you have not edited the mesh itself, moving vertice is allowed but not deleting or adding any.

Dang, oh well..Guess I'm just going to have to skip modifying the single bed..Thanks for helping out, though!

Beds are always a mess and hassle to work with. Personally, what I've always done is edit the non-mattress/cover parts and map them around EA's. Then in the final leg, I import the original mattress/cover and use the existing map and assignments.

It's easy enough to export the bed from s3pe as a .s3asc (which has joints and joint assignments), import that into MS, and then separate the bed parts so that you can work on just the frame. Is it the frame you're trying to change?
Like Morphead, I don't generally change the mattress and bedding...if you don't alter those you can keep the joint assignments EA gave them.

Right. I'm just trying to change the frame of the bed, but if I were to export it as an obj to UV map it.. I would loose all of the joints unless I imported over the original mesh. But still, there would be no way for me to assign the new frame to the correct joint since the frame and mattress are all combined into one group.

1. Clone the bed.
2. Export the lods as a .s3asc using s3pe.
3. Make your mesh as a .obj. Export that to whatever you want for mapping or map it in MS. When it's done save it as a .obj and close it.
4. Open MS and import the bed .s3asc. Pull it apart into separate groups so that the frame is all alone as a group.
5. Import your .obj bed frame mesh. Assign the frame joint to it and delete the EA bedframe.
6. Regroup the bed parts and make sure the new group is in the correct place on the list.
7. Export from MS. The 00000 will give you a joint warning because of the unassigned shadow group...that's ok.
8. Import into .package and test in game.
