I would like to know what your favorite residential lot size is, and why.

Personally, I love the idea of the 60x60 or 64x64...
I always start a build at that size, because I like the idea of having lots of land...
Somehow, I ALWAYS end up filling most of the lot up with some crazy mansion.
No more land :(
HA!

What are you into?
Do you go for the MEGA Mansion, or do you go for the Micro Starter?

Lets hear it!

I use velocitygrass' "Add Any Lot Size" mod (here on MTS) and my fav lot size is 35x45.
I never really build large houses. I go for the med sized modern beach house.

I almost always use smaller sizes. Like less than 20 wide or tall.
I feel a bit intimated with huge lot sizes. I'm better at designing smaller homes anyways.

See, I cant do small homes.
Its not because I dont want to.... I just cant..

I dont have the imagination to build something visually appealing, and functional - all on such a small scale.

That is skill.

Yeah, bigger lots means more landscaping (which I am not too good at, btw).

30x30. Not too big, not too small. :)

10 x 10. :) I'm not sure why; I just like the challenge of having a tiny house. I have been tempted to make an entire neighborhood with tiny lots, but I think my video card would explode. :)

10x10 and 20x20 sizes.

30x30. Not too big, not too small. :)Same here, It's small enough to not be overwhelming, but big enough to have plenty of rooms, or a nice yard.

20x30, and 30x30 are my favourite.

Just enough space to make a nice medium sized home for my sims, but not too big that I'm floundering around trying to fill up the space to make it look decent.

Either tiny (I like to build and manage small houses) or the biggest possible to build a small house and lots of trees, a pond etc around :)

20x30 for smaller or regular sized families, 30x40 or 40x40 for the bigger ones. But even on the 40x40 lots the house itself is not that large. I just need that additional outdoor space for the garden plot (5x5) and the various outdoor activities.
I used to prefer micro-homes but since Late Night routing has often become a problem with these now.
My favourite pre-made houses in this respect are the Riddler and Curious houses in Twinbrook and the Rookery that was added to the Bin with Generations. They are perhaps not the most efficient houses but my Sims are in continuous bright-green bliss anyway.

That's the reason why I requested a Gormenghast castle on a 20x30 lot from you in one of your other threads. I was serious!

I love to start my Sims off with a home on a 20x20, 20x25, and every so often I will use smaller lots, 15x20 or even a custom size 10x30. When I build a fancy, more expensive, home then I might use the 30x30, 30x40, or the 40x40. Nothing larger than that.

I like medium sized lots, maybe 20x30 to 30x40. Dislikes large lots because its difficult to find an empty spot for them to place.

40X40 is a decent size for a nice home, and still leave room for outdoor activities. I can almost always find a nice 40X40 lot in any world. I do like 60X60 (even 50X50, but they're hard to find or place outside of BP) again for a nice, large home (especially for a legacy style game), and leave room for a garden, playground, pool/hot tub, and a small pond for fishing (the best way to satisfy those go fishing before 6 AM. I also prefer larger rooms in my sim homes, as routing is easier when they don't have to squeeze through choke-points like 1 tile wide stairs, and I can have a decent sized nursery so I can actually read to the kid, instead of playing the walk down the stairs leaving the kid up top game.

30x30 for me I guess, im not good at building but my houses are compact. I don't like to waste space and I only like necessary rooms . . .

Between 20 x 30 and 40 x 40 and everything in between. The 64 x 64 lots are nice but for some reason EA has made theirs uncomfortable. I can place 3 20 x 30 lots where the landgrab alto mansions are that have 6 bedrooms and they look like california trac mansions ;) Thats 9 huge houses where EA planned 3 and if I take the park out thats 3 more ;) I put parks in the corners and have a lot of fun with gen 2. I can place a nice pub and a community garden and a playground plus a fishing lot on 40x40's that dont quite meet the road ;) My favorite houses are from Los Agnelos called Westridge Luxury Homes ;) Its one of my favorite maps. BTW does anyone know why the map still shows the original park? And how to clear that?

It all depends on how far the house is from the center of town, really. The longer it takes to travel to the gym, swimming pool, grocery store, etc., the bigger I want the lot to be so I can make sure I've got room for all of the above (at least a garden) on my lot!

For a single Sim I like a nice 15x20 or 20x20. For a family, 30x30, 30x40 or 40x40 always seems to fit well; you can have a decent-sized house, plus a small playground area and maybe a garden. I only use 60x60 or 64x64 if I'm building a mansion or a special 'themed' house, like a large vampire estate or faerie hideaway.

As small as possible because I like to expand things myself, which if I do I will move the existing construction to a huge empty lot. Otherwise just the facts (as many facts as possible though) ma'am.

I like 30x20 or 20x30 lots.

They keep me from going into my MUSTBUILDGIANTHOUSE'craze - but still give enough room for a moderately sized abode with a backyard.

I like building small to medium homes - anywhere from the 10x10 to the 20x30 lots, and usually the largest lot I use is the 30x30. I don't build a home that large all the time but there have been a few times that I've used a 60x60 and a couple 64x64 lots. For the most part I tend to build working farms on those huge lots.

I don't feel intimidated with the huge houses, but rather I get frustrated at huge rooms with a lot of empty wasted space because you can't clutter it up to give it that cozy feeling and if you do, you lag like crazy for all the junk in it. I'm also rubbish when it comes to landscaping so small to medium lots work very well for me.

Very, very huge lots. But I don't build houses on them... at least not anymore :(

No, I build huge lots and put forests and hills on them for awesome photo shoots.

I absolutely love smaller lot sizes. I don't think ever in my years of playing TS3 have I built on a lot size larger than 40x40. The 40x40 lots where either for smaller community lots or my largest mansions. But honestly, 30x30 is decent enough for a 4-6 bedroom house with a nice sized backyard.

I have played 50x50, 60x60, or 64x64 lots but only for a brief period for staging purposes. I make special themed families such as rich celebrities, political families, or mafioso. It's fun to build with these lots since there is so much space and I don't want it to look awkward. I either make old manors or Italian villas, though, never modern houses. Ex:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-YuI1HOdUj-U/UAjd-EGQ2mI/AAAAAAAAADQ/PuzTgBDa-QQ/s144/Mansion.jpg

More often I play with 20x30, 30x30, 30x40, or 40x40. And it really depends on the families whether I play with a particular size. Poor sims usually git stuck with the 20x30 lots. In fact most of my starter families use this size.

If I play a small custom town, I might play with 15x20 or 20x20. These lot sizes are challenging but fun to build on. Often I find I need to build a basement. Somehow these lots don't look right if I build upwards rather than down.

My favorite lot is on a 30x40. There are two levels above ground and three below. The bottom-most basement level was originally just a small room for nectar as it is supposed to age better the deeper it is; but then I had a sim with the "Private Museum" lifetime wish, so I expanded it to fit the collections. There is actually a third floor, but it is only one tower room that is 3x3 and not used for anything other than architecturally. All the rooms are fair sized (the 2 largest are the living room which is 7x6 and feels quite cozy with a 3 tile fireplace, sofa, loveseat, 2 chairs 2 end tables, piano, bookcase, coffee table and a few plants; the dining hall is 7x7 and does double duty as a collection showcase) but not the monster rooms I usually see on the 64x64 lots.

I have been thinking of placing it on a 64x64 though, to create a "mansion" version; mostly because the heir in my current game has the "Arc builder" lifetime wish and I need the room for the animals. I'd be adding a series of outbuildings rather than adding on to the home itself (with the possible exception of adding an additional garage bay for balance).

I just did a quick search on the Exchange. The Exchange divides lots by small, medium and large. I did not find similar filters here or on TSR, so I don't have any data on their lot sizes.

My quick search revealed that there currently are 10,748 small lots on the Exchange. There are 64,156 medium lots. The Exchange has 75,136 large lots. In other words, out of over 150,000 lots. approximately 11,000 are small lots. Roughly 7% of the lots being uploaded are small lots.

I suspect that if the numbers were readily available, one would find similar proportions on other sites. In any case, these numbers are consistent with my experience in looking for lots. I would also note that my experience has been most of the small lots are not very well done.

This search shows while many of the posters here are seeking smaller lots, the people actually building lots are making larger lots. There seems to be a mismatch between what people say they want and what people are actually uploading.

I would note that in building a world, I personally had a hard time finding suitable houses for the smaller lots. I could fill a block of eight 20 x 20 lots, and I could fill a block of 30 x 20 lots. 25 x 20 was doable. 25 x 25, forget about it! It was much easier finding attractive homes for 30 x 40 lots, and of course, there are plenty of really large lots which are available for download.

My theory is that making smaller lots really does not interest many lot builders. As a general rule, players do not receive a lot of praise for making functional and attractive starter lots. In fact, it seems that the vast majority of starter lots are not starters at all -- they cost more than starting sims can afford. It seems that most lot builders find they get more atta boys by building big and expensive lots.

If you are adding lots to a world, either a world you make yourself, or a downloaded world, it probably behooves you to have smaller inexpensive lots. This is because many NPC sims really cannot afford the big expensive lots, particularly if you are using mods like Twallans mods which take the sims' wealth into account when housing sims. Big expensive lots also tend to be emply lots.

30x30, 30x40 for normal houses. 40x40 Sometimes and 60x60 or 64x64 for mansions :) I like almost every lot size

I don't like them too big so for a normal suburb lot I usually go for 20x25 and sometimes 20x20 or 20x15. For a lot on the country side I usually go bigger tho.
I tend to keep the house itself about 8x10 with 3 stories (basement á la sims 2, 1st floor & 2nd floor) and there's always enough room for a big family (I love bunkbeds) with 5-6 bedrooms and 3-4 bathrooms etc.
I'm very influenced by Plasticbox's sims 2 houses when I build since they look a lot like the houses where I live.

Regarding the ratios of lots on the exchange (and there are drop down filters on MTS to search for the vaious sized lots, btw, I use it all the time) I know I tend to download the more ornate and larger lots because I have a heck of a time decorating and using such huge lots! I have several favorite "generation" houses that I use for legacies. I downloaded them all from MTS, and they're all by Romagi. Bittersweet, Brownsugar, and I think the last is Victoriana. They are so much better than anything I have ever done, that it's just a relief really to plop them in my game and admire how quickly I can get on with what I want to do.
