Hey,
wondering if anyone knows how to fix this particular issue. All of the sudden my sims 3 game is using up a TON of cpu and is freezing (says it's using 980,000 for memory and it's never been anywhere NEAR that before. This has never happened and I can't seem to fix it; I've restarted the game, the computer, canceled all windows updates, canceled all needless background programs, restarted everything again, checked the cache files. I just got this laptop four months ago and have had no problems, haven't installed any custom content recently or any ep's or stuff packs. Geez, the game decided it hates me.
Hoping someone can help me out since i am out of ideas.

What does Task Manager show as using up all the processing power?
And I'm thinking Sims 3 is seeing the "AMD A8-3520M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (4 CPUs), ~1.6GHz" as a weak system. And it totally does not help your case that with a weak CPU, you have an Onboard Graphics and not a dedicated discrete graphics card. So the system cannot cope with both the intensive CPU-crunching and Graphics-intensive stuff it needs to do. Game Help:Onboard Graphics
Prolong gaming on a weak system may shorten its life-span. Game Help:Your Computer is Like a Car

Well, that frickin sucks since I specifically asked which laptop would be good for running sims and they assured this one was perfect.
When the game freezes, I tab out and go into task manager and the CPU usage percent is insanely high.
So basically, I have to get a new computer or a separate graphics card ... ugh. I'll try lowering the graphics settings in-game and see what that does, if anything.

Erm, who did you ask? The Sales people from the store where you buy it from? Do they even play Sims?
"go into task manager and the CPU usage percent is insanely high"
Yes, so what process is causing the high CPU usage?

Yeah, I asked the sales guys. It would appear they don't play sims, but I suppose they weren't the best people to ask; they probably just wanted to sell me a laptop. I assumed it's sims 3 causing high cpu usage since it's only when the game is running that it spikes. Plus, the memory is over 100,000 while everything is below 10.000.
Anyway, I bought a new laptop with a nvidea graphics card.

One that fits the Sims' requirements, I hope. ;)
Well, if things are resolved since you have a new machine, locking.
