View Full Version : Tutorial/ Hints and Tips- Career Creation

Just some tips to improve career creation.
Before creation
Get an idea and shape it in your head. Some questions you should be asking yourself- Can you make it have 10 levels? Does it require skills the game caters for? Can you get a vague idea of what the chance cards will be like? If you're having difficulty at this stage, it'll probably be worth picking a new idea. Nearly 3/4 of all my ideas go down the pan because I can't visualise it with 10 levels. If you're devoid of ideas, check here. (http://forums.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=89923)
Writing up
You have an idea? Good. Now it’s time for the planning stage. Using pen and paper, plan
The wages,
Times,
The actual job titles (not descriptions),
Skills involved,
Friend’s needed,
The vehicles and clothing to be used and finally
The workdays.
Write your ideas in a logical order, and make sure it's clear to read. Finished? That's the easy part.
The descriptions and chance cards
Now, the tough part (well, sort of). First, in a word document (or any software with spell check) write up your descriptions for each of the 10 job levels. Do not write up straight into SimPE!!! Always type in word and paste into SimPE- theere si noting worse thaan a caarer fuul of speeling mistkes!
Done the description? Print off a copy for reference, save the document and open a new document for the chance cards.
Chance cards are the most time consuming part of a career- for example, I can plan and write up a career without cards in about and hour, but it takes me a good few days to write out decent chance cards (weeks if I'm feeling lazy).
Chance cards have this layout-
Description of an event the occurs
The two outcomes that can happen -A and B.
The description of A being the right choice
The description of A being the wrong choice
The description of B being the right choice
The description of B being the wrong choice
This means that you'll need (including the opposite gender cards) 100 cards in total. If you're writing a good long paragraph for each (as I do) you'll need a lot of commitment. Good luck!
Done? Brilliant! Put them all into SimPE (using bidou's career editor) and sit back and admire your handiwork. You have your own custom career! However, that isn't the end of it.
Technical stuff
You need to do several more thing before the career hits the forums. First, change its GUID and Group ID- if you're unsure how to do this, use my tutorial found here. (http://forums.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=85728&highlight=guid)
Done? Now, time to make it Nightlife and Uni compatible (so that it'll work in both games). How do you do it? Go here. (http://forums.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=49038)
Done? Good- now test it. Things you look out for-
Is it overwriting any career? (Yes? look back at it's GUID and Group ID)
Is it even appearing (No? Check to see if you've made it EP compatible)
Do the carpools/uniforms work?
Are there any spelling mistakes?
Are all the chance cards there? (Check using boolprop testingCheatsEnabled true-
1. Open the game and enter a lot
2. Press Ctrl+Shift+C and in the white box that appears type boolprop testingCheatsEnabled true (do this exactly)
3. Hold shift and click on your sim. A pie menu should appear.
Click "Spawn" and "Chance card tester"
4. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/tutorial.jpg
All done? Release it in the career forum, and remember to put its job levels and details in the original thread.
Key points
If you don't have either Expansion packs, and what to see if it's EP compatible, see how many files the career contains- there should be 108.
A useful little tip- when creating careers, you don't have to keep making them EP ready. What I did is downlaod one of p00jkins EP ready careers (It doesn't matter which one you pick, but don't pick Life of Crime, as it contains extra files you don't want) and place it in a folder created escpecially for careers. Every time I create a new career, I copy the base EP ready file and use it as a template :)
When you release a career, make sure it has at least 3-4 chance cards in it, and make sure that if you release it unfinished (which I don't recommend) have the common courtesy to finish it.
Word is your friend- never ever type directly into SimPE. I have an unfortunate habit of typing the as teh- this irritates the hell out of me, as I can't stop myself from doing it, and when posting on MTS, I have to always check over my posts to check for that error. If written straight into SimPE, my careers would be full of misspellings.
This page is your best buddie- http://forums.modthesims2.com/forumdisplay.php?f=250
Congratulations! You have a completed custom career, ready for release! Good luck with it!
Cutting out the Crud
Ok, now you've completed the career, it's time to post it. In this little section I plan to help reduce some of the unessesary stuff I personally think you don't need.
Stuff to put in your post-
Any background info
Job levels (for both adult and teen/elder)
Basic info (Is it EP ready? Does it overwrite any careers? Is there a teen/elder career version? Are the Chance cards completed? Is there a unique icon? Have you included a reward object? If so, what is it and will it work?)
Stuff I'd advise leaving out-
Versions. personally, I don't like versions. Too many numbers. I give my careers easy names (i.e. Bakery carer- Adult) and if I update them, I simply repost the updated file with the same title- replace it with my new version- easy.
EP compliments- i don't understand this stuff about compliments- All EP's, TS2 only- don't waffle on about compliments. Trust me.
Done? Voila- you have a well created and well posted career- Nice Work :)
Superfly
As and extra offer, if you follow this guide exactly, but still can't get results, post your career here and I'll look it over for you. :)
I've also included a tiny checklist for you- it just allows you to tick off to see if your career is AOK.

Some really good tips. Poorly planned careers get extremely irritating after a while. One minor nitpick if I may though, you wrote:
2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del
But I think you meant
2. Press Ctrl+Shift+C
One tries to shut down your computer, the other opens the cheat window. ;)

Thanks Echo- That small error's now been fixed :)

Ctrl+Alt+Del! Ha ha!
Lol! Even the experts make the occasional mistake I guess. :D
Many thanks for this tute though, and also the one to which you linked - the one for altering a Career's GUID so it won't overwrite a Maxis one. :) With the new Fix Integrity button it's SOOOOOOO easy now. :D
I have a question for you though, Superfly:
If I'm using a Maxis Base Career as a starting point, is there a way I can instruct SimPE to delete all its Chance Cards? I personally am not fond of them, since they are, as the name would suggest, pure CHANCE rather than a CHALLENGE based on your ability to problem-solve and pick the correct answer.
Furthermore, when creating/modifying a Career they're a pain in the butt because you have to think up and then type in LOADS of text that doesn't even need to be read(since the player can just pick A or B, without even reading the dialog, and have a random chance of success), and the whole process is a total waste of time - 10 times over(if keeping the full 10 levels)!!!
So, that's me question: is there a quick and easy way in SimPE to tell it to Remove all Chance Cards?
If so, I'm eager to start writing some new Careers. :) EP-compatible BTW. I should point that out, as it may well be relevent to the question I raised.
Thanks.

Hi Thraxwhirl
0 probability for the cards? Easy :)
In bidou's editor, find this box-
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/0prob.jpg
And replace the value with 0- that chance card will no longer come up. Do this for all the gaps where there are no chance cards.
Good luck with your careers! :)

Posting here as you suggested Superfly. Thanks!
I based it on one of the ep-ready careers.
I was trying to get it to work in Sims 2 only at first. Now I have Uni and NL installed as well - the career simply does not show up in either setup.
The chance cards are not all done, cos I got disheartened...
Any advice gratefully accepted.

Reading through the stuff above - could Group ID be the culprit? I never did find out how to change that?
SuperFly
12th Feb 2006, 11:46 AM
Well, the group ID was still Maxis based, but that wouldn't explain why it wouldn't appear... To fix the group ID, click this button and then click OK when the screen pops up-
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a230/Superfly2005/File9.jpg
As for it not appearing... what country do you live in? If I know this, I can help you out further. If you live in a country where the native language isn't english, the problem will have to be reviewed. If you're from another country, the text will need to be enabled for all languages... I'll explain this a little better once I know what the problem is.

OK - though how one is supposed to know that using the Fix Integrity button fixes the group ID? - edit - ok - I shoulda read your tutorials... it can be a life's work in itself navigating these fora and ferreting out information.
I live in UK so it's not a language issue. Game is set to English. I reset the group ID and will try again.
Oh and chewing through the tutorial you give http://forums.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=85728&highlight=guid here I can't see anything that says Filetypes? Nor any dashed line.....

Hi!
It's great that it is now possible to add custom outfits to careers, but I'd like to use some of the existing ones as well. Does anyone happen to have a list of what is what? For instance, I don't know what 'bluescrubs' and 'lowrank' are.

This is probably going to end up being a really dumb question, but here it goes. I started making a career and I want to close out the program to come back to it later. I close the career editor fine. I go to close SimPE and it says "Do you want to save the changes you made to the package?" Of course, I say Yes. But it doesn't do anything. That little pop up disappears and SimPE is still open.
What the heck and I missing?

I used bidou's career editor to make my career. It shows up in-game, but no matter what lvl it says you're hiring in at, you always start at the same lvl. Ex: you hire on at lvl 1, but when you check your job preformance, it shows your at lvl 4 and you've not been to work yet. This is my first attempt at a custom career. Any help would be grateful.

Ok...I created a new career and it shows up in my game (it was created off of the Show Biz career). It doesn't overwrite anything. However, when I tell my Sim to take the job I get an error message (An error occurred in object "N001_User00012_Nina" #210, Error: You sent me a crappy GUID, please fix it.). I have tried changing the GUID yet again and I still get this message. Now, the Sim will still be put on the career path, but when she gets home and gets promoted I get the same error message, no pop up box, and the career changes, but it doesn't indicate that. Also, my custom outfit is not showing up. Please help!

Aniram2010- how does what work? The editor? Biduou's editor? Bidou's editor I can help with, although I'm a bit challenged in the SimPE department.
flippinmental- Well, when I say 100 cards, I should say 50 male and 50 female. What is common is that you write cards for male, then replace the appropriate words for females, i.e. $me and his best friend for male would become $me and her best friend for the female card. This halves career creation time.
lil-kisses_xx
27th Jul 2006, 12:13 AM
Hi!
I have a question.
Do you have to have 50 chance chards? Or can it only be 20...like one for each level and then one for male and female. so then ten male and ten female.??
SuperFly
27th Jul 2006, 05:59 PM
Chance card structure is a little bit more complex than that- each level requires a bare minimun (a real bare minimun) of 3 cards (for one gender)- one description, one option that goes right on both accounts, and another that goes wrong on both accounts. That means you have to write 30 cards (I knew GCSE Maths would come in handy :)). HOWEVER- in my honest opinion, if you write a career, you do it properly, the real deal- full cards for all levels. If you look at any of my careers you'll rarely find a card that has less than 4 lines (although some may be less when I felt a little lazy).
Careers are basically a load of text. The whole point of a career is to be read- and so you need to write good. It takes some time I know (boy do I know) but it's really worth it in the end :)

I was wondering how you open up teen/elder careers in Bidou's editor. I can't seem to find them when I open the base career template I downloaded. Is there a whole separate base for teen/elder careers, because as of right now, the only way I could figure out how to do it was to open the teen/elder package from SuperFly's Time Travel career and mod it. I'd like to know how to do it without hijacking others' work. ^_^ Thanks!
P.S. SuperFly - Don't worry, I'm not planning on trying to post it or anything, it's more of a practice for an adult career.

LeprechaunLyd, killer- you need to open a career before bidou's editor becomes available. Download and open one of these careers (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=49038), then open bidou's editor (in the Tools menu at the top of the screen) and edit the career (Make sure you register a unique GUID and get a new group ID!!!!)

According to what I could understand, the career will overwrite an original if the GUID and group ID is not changed. This is Exactly what I want to do. I don't accept criminal as career and miss the education career for Gunther Goth and Ginia Kat. Got from someone that created an education career, well, what's the GUID and group ID for the criminal career?
Thanks.

Hi everyone!
This might be the most stupid question so far, but here goes:
I can't get my career in the game. Do I have to copy it to a special folder, or can I leave it in C:\program\simpe\data? (Program= Swedish "Program files" directory)
When I copy it to My Documents\EA Games\The sims 2\Downloads I get a warning when I start the game, which asks me if I want to use the costum created stuff (the career), but I can't apply for a job in in, and the Chance Cards doesn't show up if I use "boolprop testingcheatsenabled true". If I double-click the .package file (career.package, based on the EP tutorial file) I get a message which, translated from Swedish, says:
"Double-click on a packed (package?) file with custom content to install it".
What am I doing wrong? GUID and Group ID seems to be OK.
Thanks in advance!

I'm not the brightest bulb in the box but I was wondering if there was a way to make a career for a teacher and the last step being a professor.
Just wondering but kool.

It should be possible like any other career, but I think there's going to be an education career in Seasons, in which case it might be worth it to wait for that instead.

Nevermind, figured it out myself :)
Hopefully this question hasnt been asked and answered already, I didn't find an answer after reading a number of the post on this forumn.
At any rate, I just downloaded SimPE and the base career file, transferred it to the data folder, and when I open Bidou's Career Editor the Science career is the only one that comes up. How do I get the other careers to open?

I'm writing chance cards for someone how do I place them into the game? Well i'm the one telling you and i used to be asking tht too  THERES 100 CHANCE CARDS IN TOTAL only do 50 at the most because they think that there a compleatly different card even though i'll fix the boy girl grammer.
And i'll explain how chance cards work you have the top two little rectangles are the two places... blah blah actualy no simpe. how about you just right out 4 cards per each full chance card theres 10 full chance cards 1 per level (need do'em all) , theres 2 options and each option leads to 2 a small chance card s one good thing that could happen or 1 bad thing that could happen theres also two biggining cards which discribe the chance. there has too be two things the sim could do at that card which then makes a full chance card. Hope that helps and make each full chance card in a diffrent document.

Um... I don't get that.. sorry o_o' well that's the easiest way for me to explain so i guess your unteachable so ask Superfly or a another career making if you can't understand you probably won't understand that too but if you did'nt know 1 little thing about careers why did you even ask to do them? :wtf: that's what i don't understand. so if you don't know a thing just leave it that's the easiest way i learned just right it all in microsoft word and do it the way superfly said to do it that's the only way i know now i'll copy it (once you upload it in a post) and copy it in SimPE okay.

I've got my career all done except for the career reward. I set it to polygraph in Bidou's Career Editor, but it doesn't add my career to the rewards, even though everything else works perfectly. I see a tutorial for using a custom object but not one for using one of the standard rewards (and it's not in Emma's tutorial).
How do I get my career to show up in the career rewards section? It shows up in the newspaper, my sims go to work, all the chance cards work fine, but the career reward is driving me bats!
Thanks for any and all help!

Ok, so i have the career up and running all pretty smooth. I tried including a custom vehicle and that's when it went bad. The carpool comes but tries to go in the driveway. If the driveway is empty, the car pulls in but my sim won't go in and i cant get a selection "go to work". Any thoughts on how to make a custom car work for carpools?

I am currently working on a Fire Service career and have been able to create two new vehicles by cloning two other existing car pool vehicles. If you try to use a vehicle that is not already a car pool vehicle, I would think that you need to adjust the pie menu and the behavs. Sorry I can not help with that. I have been able to repaint the police car and the ambulance and they seem to work fine in the game. Hope to get the career up soon, once I get the chance cards finished (a little stuck).
I am attaching 2 pics.

Just started working on my first career, and It seems to be going smoothly. Just one thing that confuses me (I'm sure it's been answered, but i don't think i saw it)
Is there anywhere that shows which car is which for the carpool? (ex: what the different sportscars look like, what the sedan looks like, etc). I cant tell exactly by the names

I'm trying to create a archaeologist career, but after writing everything, I found that I could not open the career editor. I have a base career, but the button not only doesn't ungrey, but it doesn't even appear.
Ask me for screenies if you need.
Also I don't see why we need to make a card for every level, I checked out the cards for natural scientists using the cheat, and there is only about 4 cards (the others just say 'nsii not used' (I think))

Okay... I'm just going to say thank you for writing this tutorial right now; I'm sure I'll be back later to annoy you with questions, as I've never used SimPe (well, not for anything serious) before. I'm going to try to make an HP-inspired career dealing with magical beasts. :) Inspired by one of yours, I think (the Hogwarts one?). Anyway, I guess I'll do the fun bit now, writing out descriptions and levels... I despise Chance cards, so I'm not gonna bother with that bit. :P
Thanks again for the guide and for your patience in dealing with all the inquiries; as I said, I'm sure I'll have some too.

Am i able to write 1 for male and then copy it. Becuase the jobs are the same and this in the first time i have tried making a career. Ive already done the jobs, wages, desciption, skills vehicle, clothing, workdays and firneds on a piece of paper (desciption in word). If you are able to help plz let me know.

You can easily test the careers by opening the cheat menu(Ctrl+Shift+C) and typing "BoolProp Testingcheatsenabled true" then shift click the newspaper>adult jobs>then select the job you want to test(use with the force chance cars).

Hi! I hope this is the right place for this question.
I want to edit a custom career made by someone else. I have SimPE, with Bidou's editor working. But I can't find any of the custom careers. I looked in the object Workshop under Other and Sims Type, and the maxis careers seem to be there - but not the custom ones. I checked that the career files are in-game, and even tried to search for them in SimPE with the Finder tab. Ddin't locate anything with the right package name. Or anything else, in fact.
I've been all over the net looking for a reference to help me, and can't find one. Everyone just says..."open the career you want..."
The careers were made by SaraMK, and they are the Maxis NPC careers really. In case that makes a difference. I don't have any totally-custom careers.
Hope this is another case of blindness or stupidity. Hope you can help me!
EDIT: Okay, as usual I found it almost immediately after giving up and posting a question. The answer is...Use the 'open' command from the File menu at the top of the screen. Idiotically simple. There's just something about SimPE that makes my brain go all mushy.

I finished my fantastic new career and when i was testing it during the game, i hit a little snag. It runs pretty smoothly, but when my sims get promoted, i get that little annoying error box (you know that one with cancel, retry, and delete) and it says that I gave it a crappy GUID (exact words too, what person from maxis typed in crappy GUID?) and i need to fix it. How, exactly, is a tad bit of a problem. Any help would be fantastic.

So I know this is going to sound stupid, but I have everything down, writing wise. But I have no idea how to use SimPE Bidou Career Editor. It always tells me that I don't have a package file selected or there is a problem loading the career. I have no idea how to get from having it all in MS Word and making it into SimPE.

I have written my own career and tested it and, shockingly, it works. This is my first ever custom created item for the game. However, I am having one small issue. Playing Maxis careers, I have noticed the higher a Sim's aspiration meter, the more likely they are to get a career and the lower the aspiration, the less likely. Not in my own creation. No matter her mood (I even cheated and set it in high red), she gets a promotion as long as she has fulfilled the skills requirement. Is there somewhere to change this or did I do something wrong? If someone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

hi im new to this, but i have managed to do a career and get it slightly to work in the sims 2.When my sim gets a job it says karate instructor (my career) but has test subject after it(as you can see i used the science career as a guide) and when i click on skills and career it says test subject and when i hover over that a brief discripton of whati do in the job.How do i edit these ? and where can they be found .
I posted for the first time today but a HystericalParoxysm kindly deleted my post with a note saying "not even remotely in the right place."I had already apologize if i had posted in the wrong place.
Perhaps HystericalParoxysm could do a new user/first time poster a favour and put the post in the right forum but maybe the power of forum mod has gone to his or her head !

I am so lost with all of this stuff. I can't even seem to get SimPE to open up correctly. I appreciate this tutorial for what it is, but apparently I'm beyond clueless. Is there a tutorial that is meant for dummies such as myself who need step by step instructions on creating a career? I've tried visiting the SimPE website about a thousand times today to look for a tutorial on the program itself and I can't get any of their pages to load. I would LOVE to create some custom careers. Am I really too stupid to do it??

Hi all! I'm working in a project for making a "career" for my elders which is in fact like atending a Leisure Center: a way to keep them busy after retirement and not earning moore money but spending it in art, dancing or wathever classes. The idea is that they earn 0$ in all 3 levels and have chance cards 100% happening with -150 or -250$ so everyday they "get a bill" for this classes. I'm working with SimPe and Bidou's editor, but this chance cards in game do not work as I thought: both options result in a "earn 0$ and got a bonus (or a penalty) of 0$".
Any idea why and how to solve this? Thanks!!

I am trying to replace adventurer and intelligence career. but all of the tutorials here seem obsolete.
I assumed if I could at least find their GUID I could overwrite them using a different career file with those GUID.
Could someone please help me using the latest version of SimPE, and without any links to really old site links on how to find and change existing careers?
