Hi there, thanks for this amazing tutorial.
Just a little problem here though. I was following your tutorial exactly to making the dinning table. However, i cannot find the teselate command at all. The version of Wings 3D which i am using is v0.98.32a. I understand that the teselate command has been changed to subdivide command. However, i cannot find that quite command as well. Please do me a favour and help me. I've repeat the steps twice already and i still cannot figure out whats wrong. Thanks!

You need to be in face selection mode to have the tesselate option. Of the four pyramids on the top of the screen, select the third one of the left. Now you should be able to tesselate :).

I downloaded your Wings 3D tutorial part 1 when I try and extract the files a mesage saying CRC failed in the Object_Creation_Tutorial_V2.1_(Wings_3D)_-_UPD_22feb06_-_PART_1of2 and Unexpected end of archive.

I have the latest version of WinRar.

The second part of it works but thats not much help without the first.

Please, make sure that you are following the tutorial exactly, including making sure that there is a checkmark next to all the mesh subsets you want to export from SimPE. Try following the tutorial again, being careful not to miss any small step.

Quick question. I downloaded the blender 3D version part 1 and 2. When I opened it, it gave me a list of softwares i would need. I downloaded them all no proble. When I started I opened Simpe and followed the steps through object workshop and the data storage containe. Then when it said to opee the plugin view and I did. the tutorial told me to only put a check in this one box and click the export button but my plugin view didn't have in boxes or an export button. Can you tell me how I would export the table into Blender. By the way I have V. 0.58 of Simpe.

Please HELP!!!!!!!!

Insane In The Membrane, the Creation Start-Up Center (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=85042) has links for paint programs. Gimp is one of the free ones.

Rockwall567, can you take a screenshot of what your plugin view looks like?

Insane In The Membrane

i was thinking of downloading gimp but i can't find a simple button that can download gimp, if anyone can tell me wat to do or give me a link that would be great.

P.S. i tried imageforge and that was a terrible thing it was so confusing so i got rid of that.

IgnorantBliss
21st Jul 2006, 04:48 PM
You're going to have to do some reading around the Gimp site to figure out how to download, install and use it. You can't ask help for every single step on the way. You will figure it out when you give it a little time and effort :).

Rockwall567

How do you take a screenshot?

IgnorantBliss
21st Jul 2006, 10:19 PM
Take a screenshot by clicking the Print Screen button on your keyboard, and then paste it as a new image to a paint program of your choice. You can resize the image there also, and then save as a JPEG.

Hi!

Sorry to bother you all with my stupid question.

I just started using the tutorial yesterday and managed to get every step right (I even understand parts of it :) ). Anyway, everything looks like it's supposed to do. My problem is the texturing part. How do I get the legs in one colour and the tabletop another? Is there a tutorial out there explaining how to do this?

Thanks for the great tutorial though. It really have to be super if I can get the hang of it...

/Jade

IgnorantBliss
22nd Jul 2006, 09:10 AM
You can place the legs on a separate area of the uv-map from the table top. For example, you can place the table top at the top of the map, and the legs as the bottom. Then, as you make the texture, you can color these areas differently.

Jade Russell
22nd Jul 2006, 11:06 AM
Wow, that was fast... I thought I had to wait a few weeks for an answer...

I did as you suggested (at least I think so..) but somewhere I must have gotten things wrong.

I'm really sorry to have to bother all of you again.

IgnorantBliss
22nd Jul 2006, 11:10 AM

Thanks IgnorantBliss!

/Jade

IgnorantBliss
22nd Jul 2006, 11:33 AM
You have two separate textures but only one uv-map. You're going to have to combine these textures into one since both the table top and legs use the same texture.

Open the uv-map image in your paint program (increase the colors to 16 million), paste the wood texture over the parts where the table top is mapped to, and paste the metal texture over where the legs are mapped. Then save it as a PNG and import to SimPE.

Jade Russell
22nd Jul 2006, 11:58 AM
Thanks....

but, using the turorial's selected "talking table" is it possible to make two UV-maps, and if so how? It seems (from your answer) that that would be the "proper" way of doing this sort of thing.

I'd like to say you're defenetly not ignorant but sheer bliss...

/Jade

IgnorantBliss
22nd Jul 2006, 12:18 PM
It really depends on what you want to do with this table. If you have no problem with both the legs and top using the same material definition and being recolored at the same time (with only one recolorable subset for the table) you can leave it as it is, with everything in the same texture.

If you would like for the metal to have a different material definition from the wood (for example, adding metallic shine and such), then you would have to split them into two separate mesh subsets, have separate material definitions, material overrides and textures (you could still keep the combined texture, but in this case it would make more sense to have separate ones). If you wanted to do this using the existing clone, you would have to manually add the second subset and all the files involved (I have a tutorial available for doing that). The other alternative would be to pick a table that already has two separate recolorable subsets and clone that instead.

Thank You So Much IgnorantBliss. I appreciate all your help. I used your tutorial on adding subsets, without adding one, but just using the recolor parts and got it to work. IgnorantBliss
22nd Jul 2006, 08:55 PM
Neo Ross, you need to install WinRAR (http://www.win-rar.com/homepage.html) to first decompress the file, and then use a PDF Reader like a Foxit Software (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/download.htm) PDF Reader to open the file inside.

Drew4u2011, the RAR discussion got so long and off topic for the object tutorial that I split it off and moved to the Game Help (http://www.modthesims2.com/forumdisplay.php?f=31) forum.

Rockwall567, nothing happens until you paste it as a new image to your paint program. Which paint program do you use?

Your image is so small and compressed that it's hard to tell what exactly is in it, but under the Resource Tree that should be at the top left corner, you should click on Geometric Data Container to get to where you're supposed to in the tutorial. It doesn't look like you're in the Geometric Data Container.

Did you install the managed Direct X there is a link to at the SimPE download page? You need that when you deal with meshes.

I put the cube on top of the right leg and got the cube to the correct size. But then when the tutorial said to press 3 on the keyboard I did and my creation vanished???? Im quite confused.

After opening up SimPe and clone the table I am getting an erro message stating to quit or continue. ? I continued and when it came to the part where you move and then duplicate the table leg I did not have 10 my box only 1. ?

What did I do wrong and why am I getting the error message?

Thank you

IgnorantBliss

Codien Flame, you first need to decompress the RAR file with something like WinRAR, and then open the included PDF file a PDF reader like the Foxit Software Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/download.htm).

JM23, you're going to have to tell exactly what the error message says, otherwise it's going to be impossible to tell what it means. Which version of the tutorial are you using, Milkshape, Wings or Blender?

Hi.
I'm all new to sims2 model making.
I have done few models with Solidworks and 3d canvas, but it really cannot be count ;P

So im asking here that what 3d program do u suggest for sims2 model making and ofcourse in general to make models all around.

IgnorantBliss
27th Jul 2006, 01:24 PM
The ones that we have tutorials for around here are Milkshape, Wings 3D and Blender. People use other mesh editors for Sims objects, too. I'm personally most familiar with Milkshape, and it's also the most versatile of the programs listed, with plugins available that enable retaining animations for animated objects, and making body meshes, also.

IgnorantBliss
27th Jul 2006, 07:04 PM
I don't think SimPE can clone objects that are incompatible with your EPs, because it will only include files from EPs that you already have. Are you sure you have the correct file in the Downloads folder?

palsteri
27th Jul 2006, 07:06 PM
The problem was that there wasn't any Downloads folder on sims2 folder "anywhere" or neither in My Docs/ea.... So i hadn't a clue of this (Because i just wanted to do models, i have never played the game before) =)
Created the missing folder and all is OK now =)

Edootjuh, I think IgnorantBliss has worn her fingers typing this: when you register a new GUID for your object, you have to click "UPDATE MMATs", otherwise your new texture will override the original one.
If you check you MMAT, in the "GUID" field, you will find the o GUID of the original vase; change it to your new GUID.

First of all thank you for such a wonderful tutorial. But now I need a little help.
I created a table mesh as in the Tutorial...running it through Blender 3D in the process. On checking the new mesh and textures in game....All the surfaces turned to the viewer are invisable but the surfaces you shouldn't see are visable, almost like it's hollowed out to the side you are viewing from. When you rotate around to the other side of the table, the same thing happens...the surface that should be viewable disappear and again the surfaces you shouldn't see are visable....where did I go wrong..?. lol. Any insight would be greatly appreciated....
thank you Jaxad on how to attach a photograph :D ....

candrew,
your mesh is simply inside out :)
this seems to happen an awfull lot to beginning Blender meshers
if you're scaling in blender, and you scale too far, your mesh will get turned inside out, resulting in that rather strange table.
to fix it, without starting all over again,
- open your mesh in blender
- turn on 'draw normals' (it's a tiny button on the right
in the 'button window' for 'editing', press f9 to make sure you're in the right window)
- you'll get a bunch of blue fuzz: the normals
- where the normals are going inwards, select the face and press 'spacebar'
- in the menu, go to edit/normals/flip
if you do that for all of the inward faces, your mesh should be fixed

your mesh is simply inside out :)

Oh..ok, thanks, lol. Yes, that makes a lot of sense, it is kinda hard in Blender to see if your scaling peramaters have passed each other, I'll have to take extra care with that. I'll also have a look at the fix you recommend. TYVM  for the help........very much appreciated... :D

I'm having trouble exporting my 'table2map' from Blender to UVMapper. Instead of saving as a .obj file, its just saves as 'file'.. I might've made a naming mistake earlier, but if that's the problem, how do I rename all of my files? And if that's not it, how can I get it to export properly?

Otherwise, I haven't had any problems with this tutorial and I'm very excited to maybe start making some of my own Sims 2 items :)

Thanks for all the info in the tutorials, I'm finally getting the hang of the meshing programes and creation process....finally, but slowly, lol.
One further question though.....In a cloned object with 2 seperate meshes in the original file(ie, in my case, a table with seperate top and base meshes)....How do I export them? both together or independently?...as I also want to keep the texture files associated with each mesh seperate too...as in the original package. If I try export them seperately they have the same 'gmdc' file name so it just wants to save the second one over the first one. When I exported both meshes in one 'gmdc' file both meshes when reassembled back to SimPE then read from one texture map........any help on the correct process would be greatly appreciated...ty all very much...
ps....I am using Blender...

You can import both subsets into the same GMDC at the same time. Just make sure they both have the correct subset names :). With objects like tables you shouldn't need to replace the whole GMDC at once, just import the subsets using the Import button into the existing GMDC.

Ty IgnorantBliss, ah I think I know what you mean, let me run this by you just in case I'm way off...lol. I export both meshes from SimPE in one GMDC file to be worked on in Blender. Open that GMDC.obj file in Blender...work on both meshes but keep them as 2 seperate meshes, don't join. Export 2 UV Map'obj's to UV mapper..one based on selected 1st mesh, and a second one based on the selected 2nd mesh. So eventually I would make 2 different .png files..one for each mesh. I now save(export) my 2 different Blender meshes(still un-joined in Blender) back over the GMDC.obj file I sent to Blender originally and import that back into SimPE, and also, eventually my 2 texture.png files into SimPE...one for each specific mesh.........that sounds like the way it should work?..lol...am I right or am I nuts:bunny:... I appreciate your help and expertise....ty

candrew,
umm, that sounds about right :)
Since you're exporting them seperately for the uv-map anyway, you might find it easier to just export one mesh as 'top.obj' and one as 'legs.obj', and import them in Simpe seperately. That way you can use the 'replace' option in the simpe importer. Naming subsets is kinda wonky in blender.
So if you go to the gmdc of your table in simpe, choose 'import', then import your tabletop.
In the import window, click on the drop down menu that says 'add'. Choose 'replace' and in the new menu under it choose the group that is the original tabletop.
Repeat procedure for your legs.

LadyGrey,
Blender doesn't automatically add extensions such as .obj. When you export your Wavefront object, you sometimes have to add it yourself in the actual export window.
So go to edit/export/wavefront object,
then, in the new window, click on the second line and type 'table2map.obj',
click on 'export object' and choose the export options as shown in the tutorial
that should do it.

My texture file turned into a bunch of purple 10100011100101. Ha ha, well, one issue solved one to go :) thanks for the tutorial.

Edit: heh, reloaded it and it's fine now. Thanks again. Now... on to animation preservation...

Hi, i have a big problem. I have the latest version of SimPe and i downloaded
milkshape and UVMapper. I had a slightly older version before which had the plugin view button and everything a the bottom of the object workshop screen but when i got to page 10 of the tutorial i had done all the previous steps EXACTLY and when i clicked the plugin screen i was supposed to check only the tabledining box and things but on my one there was no box. i had clicked the content tab and everything but the screen was just white so i had nothing to click. in despair i went onto the simpe website and installed the latest version and now there are no buttons at the bottom of the object creation screen. I am in despair and don't know what to do! This is my first time using simpe and i am really glad that i found your tutorial because you explain everything so clearly but i dont know what i am doing wrong! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me someone! its really really late (or really really early, whatever way you want to look at it) but i am determined to finish what i started! could someone please help? :( :( :( :!: :!:

Well, I downloaded the latest version of DirectX (which i thought i already had but apparently i hadnt) and everything in SimPe works now. Just when i thought everything was going well, i discovered another problem in Milkshape. It's not so much of a problem but more I don't understand something in the tutorial. On page 27+28 where you are in the groups tab and you are meant to select Box1, duplicate1 and duplicate2; how do i select them all at once. when i click each of them in turn and then click regroup, it deletes Box2 and renames it regroup(and a number). Am i doing something wrong or is there a problem with my milkshape? :(

if someone could please please help i would be one happy simmer! :D

Gojohn, go to google or some other search site and type in "Microsoft DirectX" (without the quote marks) and you should find a link towww.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com). Scroll down the page a little and you should find a linked title which says "Latest update - Jun 2006" or something like that. Click this and and then click run in the dialog box etc. and it will install.

hey presto, your simpe should work! :D

Make sure only the groups you want to regroup are selected. Try going to Edit and select Select None. Now you make sure no groups are selected. Then you select Box1, duplicate1 and duplicate2 one by one, and then select Regroup. Box2 should stay there, then.

Well i discovered my problem in milkshape, i wasnt pressing select once i had clicked on box1 etc. I might be slightly dumb. but i was putting the texture on my UVMap (or atleast i was trying to) but I was using PhotoImpact 10 because thats all i have and its rubbish because it doesnt have 'flatten image' and is really meant for photo editing and stuff, its not a paint program. I'm not sure what I clicked or forgot to click, but I'm missing the Texture Image in my file.

I'm following the tutorial step by step to create a new end table, cloning the Cornerstone "Sentinel" end table. The file didn't have tabledining (which makes sense) so I exported Materials instead. Everything has worked out fine, except, there's no Texture image! So I can't import my new texture file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

That's because you have cloned an object that's originally a slave, meaning it borrows its textures from elsewhere. What you can do is either to check the "stand-alone" option while cloning to have the textures included, or select an end table that's not a slave. The Crazy 8 end table is a good one to clone.

D2Diamond
11th Aug 2006, 12:26 AM

But there was another problem: The mesh was rotated wrong, so that it would actually be underground when you'd try to place it on a wall. You probably had a wrong setting at some point in SimPE, or used a different importing method than in the tutorial, because when following the tutorial step by step, I don't think this is supposed to happen. However, I rotated the mesh back into the correct position in Milkshape, and it's now hanging on the wall like it should.

Your thumbnail image in game won't be fixed automatically, though. If you want to see the correct thumbnail, delete the package files in the Thumbnails folder in the Sims 2 folder under My Documents. The game will generate a new, correct thumbnail the next time you start up the game and look at the catalog.

I am having the same problem here. My object is upside down in the game, so I'm unable to place it. I followed the Tutorial (for Blender) excatly, so I'm thinking it might be a SimsPE problem. Unfortunetly I don't know what to look for. Would you please help me fix this?

Thank you for all your help!

D2Diamond, I don't know why your object is upside down, but there's also another problem: It's inside out. That happens with Blender sometimes, see Lethe's post here (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?p=1338402#post1338402) on how to fix it. Maybe that's connected to it being upside down also, I'm not sure. In any case, you're going to have to rotate your table in your mesh editor, I don't believe it's a problem with SimPE.

Great tutorial. My first table looks great in the game. I want to work on doing a matching chair but one without a back. I did have a go but stuffed it up completely. When I chose the chair it has 2 files not just one like "tabledining" . Obviously a chair is more complicated as there is more to deal with. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

hi, i have a question regarding textures.. as explained on this tutorial, you make the textures through uv-mapping and resulting giving you one texture for all parts to be recolored. i was wondering if it is posible if i wanted to separate the body and the legs (having two texture). and texture them separately. how do i do this? thanks

here is what i wanted to do.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g67/nitto1320i/TheSims2StarttoFinishObjectCreation.png
how can i make two texture for each part? like how do i separate the texture for the body and legs?

tiggerypum
29th Aug 2006, 07:41 AM
nitto, which way do you mean separate them? You can lay out your uvmap so that the legs and tabletop do not overlap, so that you can make the legs one color and tabletop another (which might be how this tutorial suggests the layout).

If you want to create something mix and match (like how some chairs have wood and cushions separate) you need to have 2 separate subsets/groups in the mesh. I offhand do not know of a table constructed that way, although there might be one.

oopss. just updated with pics. and thanks for replying tiggerypum. i wanted to have a detailed texture for each. ex. table texture for just the table itself and the legs will have its own texture image.. :)

i was hoping to make a more detailed table and wanted the parts to be more detailed for easy recolor.. :)

subset/groups? yes i think i want to do that.. :) but how? :P

To add a second subset to an existing table, see my profile for a link to a tutorial that I wrote for that. There are existing tables that have 2 subsets, but all the ones I remember have glass as the second subset, in which case you'd still have to add a texture image and edit the material definition to fit a solid subset. So, you might as well add the whole subset yourself.

It depends on what you mean. Can you give an example of what kind of an animated object you're talking about, and how you'd be editing it?

well, actually to be honest, i have started making some cars.. and i had attached the proper joint's to their vertices and had the wheels and doors functioning properly.. when i imported it to milkshape i had some troubles with texture materials. the body of the car not showing in the game at first (someone told me its the uv-mapping), then i uv-mapped it again and finally showed in the game but it was really messedup (the colors was just plain messedup and i can't figure out which one is it). so i thought that having different texture materials would make it easier for me to group them like the wheels, body and interiors having separate texture materials (like ex. interior, wheels and body), but i don't know the procedure on how to. so since im having trouble's with it. i thought of making some easy objects first with different texture materials. and master it first :( hope you could help me with this..

outpost,
this can happen is you changed vertex order between exporting your clonebase, and importing your new mesh
a little thing you can try is, when importing the mesh, to click on the dropdownlist at the bottom of the gmdc, that says 'xyz' and switch to 'xzy' (or whatever the other one is)
then import your mesh. hopefully, that'll fix it

Forgive me if this problem has been mentioned before, I've just lost all patience to be able to read through all the posts :-p

The tutorial is really good, thank you, but for some reason right near the beginning everytime I click on the cloned object's geometric data container and clcik the one under type it comes up with this message

Both parts of the tutorial emailed to nina_x (let me know if you did not get them).

Alban_Alban, looks like you replaced the whole counter top part. Unfortunately, you can't replace the counter top mesh with a new one. The most editing you can do is move some of the vertices around a bit, but you should leave alone the vertices on the flat part of it, as those are the ones that "know" how to form a hole for the sink.

Just wanted to say thanks for the great tutorial. I had made one object before this but it didn't turn out well and I couldn't figure out the texture mapping at all. With your tutorial I think I'm getting a glimmer of how to actually make and map a mesh. The whole thing went very smoothly and I did end up with a table! I may be back with questions after reading through this huge thread to see if anyone has asked the ones I have already.

First off, let me also say how wonderfully helpful this tutorial is (so far). I really do think that I can learn how to make object meshes thanks to you, and that opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

However.

Before that can happen, I keep getting error messages with SimPe. Just after I select "Geometric Data" I get an error message that says: "An unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore the error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will shut down immediately. Error in the application."

So of course I click "Continue" and after a ten second pause I just get the same message again. Any ideas as to what could be causing this (and more importantly, how to fix it)?

Hi Im doing the blender tutorial, but it seems I have a newer version of sim pe. Im up to the part:
Under “Plugin View” be sure the “Content” tab is selected and below that the
“cGeometryDataContainer” is also selected. Now, only check the box “tabledining” as this is the
actual cloned table mesh you will need to export. With the check mark in place click the “Export button.

I do have the content tab but I dont have the other choice underneath the cGeometryDataContainer choice. So does that mean its the end of the road of object meshing for me? Because if I download the older version of sim pe this person is using wouldn't the file not work because I have newer expansion packs that the old sim pe didnt have. Please if someone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you :)

IgnorantBliss
8th Sep 2006, 06:31 AM
Which other choice are you talking about? Even the newer versions of SimPE should still have the same options as the version in this tutorial. When you open the Geometric Data Container, you select the Content tab, and below that the cGeometryDataContainer. There is no other tab below that. Which is the part that you're missing? The "tabledining" part?

simclaudio1987, try redownloading the file, and if it still doesn't work, give me your email address and I'll email the file to you.

sxc_ida, that's because it's not a Word file, but a PDF (packed into a RAR file). First you need to extract the file with a program that can do that, such as WinRAR, and then you'll get the PDF file which you can open with Adobe Acrobat reader or Foxit Software Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/download.htm).

I'm guessing it doesn't have a catalog description, because the original UFO doesn't appear in the catalog, either. If you want it to function as a car in the game, I'd rather clone a car as a base and then import your mesh into that. Might be a challenge to get the animations and such to fit, though.

I will email you the tutorial later today when I get the chance. However, if this is your very first time making an object, I really don't recommend starting off with turning a UFO into a functional car, because that's a way too complicated a problem for a complete beginner. I strongly recommend you start off with simpler objects like the tutorial table and then move on simple animated objects like armoires. Making a functional car object is for advanced object makers.

If you don't have internet access on the computer that you use for creating objects, you can go to the SimPE website, to the GUID section login with your username, and then select Register Object, register the number of GUIDs you need for your project, write them down, and then manually write them to the GUID field in SimPE instead of clicking the Get GUID link.

Yes, you first replace the GUID with your own and then update the MMATs (with the main GUID), and Commit (with all GUIDs).

hello. ok, so i've downloaded and started on the Wings3D tutorial for creating a table. I get to the step where it says "Deselect everything (Space Bar), then select both the legs and the tabletop in the geometry graph. Right click anywhere in the main window and choose Tesselate / Triangulate." However, my menu that pops up when I do this does not have the tesselate/triangulate option. Could anyone here tell me what the 'tesselate/triangulate' option does so I can try to figure out an alternative please? I've included a couple of screen shots. The first is of my own program where one can see that the tesselate/triangulate option is missing in the menu. The second is of the downloaded tutorial (which is totally awesome and very easy to follow, thanx to everyone for these wonderful tutorials) where one can see the option for tesselate. Thanx to anyone who can help me with this.

Hey i need help please.

I am having probs with the textures showing up on my bumper car.

After i UV Mapped, i went back in 2 Wings and combined everything in 2 one and gave it a name and saved it over the original package.

I loaded it up in simPE but when i click import i saw all my parts scatterd :(

So i clicked on the one on the top and clicked replace and replaced the original statue, now when i add my texture to the bumper car only the back is textured :( what is the cause of this take a look.

I have 2 problems.

#1: After many tries, I have finally been able to get my mesh into SimPE and ultimately into the game. However, it is not tiling properly (see screenshot Sofa1_tiles.jpg). I have a 3 tile object and it is using 3 tiles, however it is pushed off to the side. I would like to know how to fix this.

#2: There is some strange smoothing going on (see screenshot Sofa1_smoothing.jpg). I had this problem frequently when I used to use 3D Studio Max and import my .obj files into Poser. The fix in Max was to explode the model and that would create crisp edges in Poser. I don't know how to accomplish this in Lightwave. I would assume that this is happening because I'm using Daz Studio to convert my lightwave .obj into an .obj format that SimPE will accept.

Thanks ahead of the time, I'm getting closed to getting it right, and if I can manage to do so (with some help from you all), I would be glad to share what I've learned w/ others who might attempt to use Lightwave.

IgnorantBliss
27th Sep 2006, 02:02 PM
AbstractSIMmer187, it's hard to say for sure since you didn't attach the package, but it seems you have multiple mesh subsets in the GMDC, several of them looking like they might not have been in the original object. The subset names have to match those of the original object to work properly. You also can only have a maximum of 2 recolorable subsets, so I would recommend regrouping your mesh in a way that there is a maximum of 2 subsets. Parts of the mesh that have a similar material can be grouped together.

This problem is not really related directly to the object tutorial, I'd recommend, in the future, to post problems like this in the Object Workshop And Repair Center (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=82084) and also including the object package in question to the post as an attachment.

SimSchnaps, I'm not sure about the details of doing this in your mesh editor, but you need to move the couch mesh to the left the distance of 1 tile (1 tile in the game, which is also one tile in Milkshape, but not sure about other programs).

I do hope that I am asking my question in the right forum.

I am having a little Milkshape/SimPE problem about the amount of face counts and vertex’s.SimPE kept saying that I had to many face's in my objects, which could have been correct, so I changed it again, so it has less face's that the original object. But still I get the error message about too many faces, which cannot be true now.
It is not clothe, so there should be no 'bone connection and such'. and I did regroup and rename and place to its right position in milkshapes 'groups-section'.
Does any one have a suggestion as to what I am missing or what might be the problem?

Sincerely,
WindBlower

IgnorantBliss
4th Oct 2006, 03:15 PM
There are plenty of Maxis objects that would have "too many faces" in SimPE, so it's entirely possible. The limit on SimPE is not always fair, especially to multi-tile objects, but the limit is there to make you aware of large vertex and polygon counts. You can import high-polygon objects when you first set SimPE to Advanced Mode in its Preferences (and then restart SimPE), but I still recommend keeping an eye on the vertices and polygons, because the limit suggestions are there for a reason. A rough recommendation is no more than 800 vertices per tile of an object. It's not a definite limit, but something to shoot for.

WindBlower
4th Oct 2006, 03:44 PM
Dear IgnorantBliss

Thank you for the suggestion.
I can't understand what you excatly mean?
So the original object can have more face's than the object that I re-created in Milkshape, (no multi tile objects) and still can't handle it, and there is not Alot of vertex count? this does not make any sense to me?
I will try the advanced mode later on, but there should be no problem when under the limit, which I am having?

Sincerely,
WindBlower

IgnorantBliss
4th Oct 2006, 05:50 PM
What exactly are the polygon and vertex counts of your mesh? Yes, it's possible that your mesh has fewer polygons and vertices than the original object, and still SimPE will tell it's too many. Like I said, the limit on SimPE is the same for all kinds of objects, and there are many Maxis objects that have more polygons than that limit.

play girl, there are different techniques for making a curved shape in Milkshape. I recommend you do a Google search for Milkshape tutorials and see what kind of tricks you can learn there. It doesn't have to be a Sims 2 related tutorial, just any tutorial that talks about creating shapes with Milkshapes will do. That's how I learned the basics of Milkshape also :).

KingofSims55, if you let me know your email address, I can email those tutorials for you :).

just4friendssims, looks like you changed the Order in SimPE to XYZ instead of XZY. In the GMDC section, in the same tab where you have the export button for the mesh, change the Order value to XZY and then try exporting the table.

For anyone interested: I've posted a CLONE TEMPLATE to create your own FIREPLACE with WORKING CHIMNEY and CUSTOM NAME & DESCRIPTION.

The template, along with the cloning instructions are HERE (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=194029).

Have fun! :)

Hi!

I see the dark object ( in game ) , and all black in the preview ( in game ). I often create objects , because now I cannot see the normal objects? Perhaps I have mistaken something on simpe… (?)

I can post a screenshot if you want

Ps: excuse me for my English, I'm Italian :)

hi there! nice tut!
anyway, like most of the others i got some problems and questions.

1) in milkshape i added some spheres and some other mesh groups to the mesh, but then in simPE i can't get to color those parts. they're all in a silver or grey color. (3d view)

2) when i go in milkshape to see my mesh for the first time ( before editing at all ) there are some vertexes around the object and they're not connected to it at all. does it matter if i delete them?

i'll be glad to get my answers! :)
