I apologize if this question has been asked before. My sims had a burglar. The security alarm went off but by the time the police got there he was already gone. Did he take things from the house or what? Because I can't find anything that's missing. Also, my sims are walking around with the thought bubble of a broken padlock. What does that mean? And how can I get them to stop doing that?

I've never seen it where the burglar got away when there was an alarm (most of the time the cops and fire department show up like 2 seconds later when there's a burglar or fire, at least in my game). The broken padlock in the bubble is just them thinking about the burglary. They'll quit doing that eventually, though they'll also probably have a thought bubble with the burglar's face and flames around it for a long while too.

Usually I can't tell what the burglar has stolen unless I actually follow him around while he's doing it.

If he stole something your sim will occasionally stand and cry and have the action "miss this object" if you have free will on. Or there will be two memories, one of being burgled, and one of what was stolen.

You may also find that your sims are furious with the burglar. If you need another friend, you can just wait for the furious state to wear off and they decide he's a pretty wonderful guy after all. Otherwise, you might want to let the family badmouth the burglar to each other to avoid having them become best friends with him.

If it's annoying you just use the cheat
"Showheadlines off"

:)

But yea, the burglar probabally stole stuff. Or something.

whenever my sims get a burglar, the cop always loses the fight, and the family is out that many simoleons. i hate it! sometimes i think i should save money and not get the alarm.

i hate the burglar, every time he steals important stuff like the fridge. one time he stole my toilet! im sure that if he could he would steal my tv remote, leave the tv just take the remote. i made my sim a cop, thinking "why not give my buddy on the force a hand next time this guy breaks into my house" but no my sim, a desk sergent just sat around twiddling his thumbs while somebody stole his stuff. The burgler prpbably left a lamp somewhere just to mess with my head.

I wish there was a mod where you could fight the burglar yourself , the more body your sim has the better chance to chase off the burglar ^.^

I had a burglar in Sims 1 steal the burglar alarm, and I still think the sims 2 burglars are more annoying.

I agree completely! Cant stand that those with alarms just stand there and watch the cop and burglar fight. Most of the time when I have a break in and there is an alarm, the cop does catch the criminal. Those who dont have one have to wake and call the cops, which takes much longer resulting in the criminal getting away. Pain in the neck! Also, when you do have an alarm and the cop comes and catches the criminal, why oh why, does the game give you an insurance payout (which is never equal the amount of what was stolen-its usually far less!) instead of just restoring the items to your house. I believe in Sims1, the items were simply returned.

A toilet? :D I'd be glad if they stole that. In my game the burglar always steals the most expensive items, and not just one or two of those, but at least three, sometimes even up to five items! And the fact that the burglar often gets away with it, is simply irritating, especially if my Sims aren't that rich and need those things for buiding skills, like a piano or a treadmill.

I also often wonder why Sims in Law Enforcement Career can't fight the burglar themselves, it doesn't make sense. The game even could apply a reward if a Sim wins a fight, like a promotion, a skill point, or a salary raise...

I wonder (may be some day I'll try it) - if you choose a Criminal carreer for your sim, and then cheat with the SimPe and make him best friend with all the burglars in the hood - will you have a burglar visit by your "best friend"? Or you won't have any burglar visits at all. Interesting :).

My Criminal Mastermind was robbed by his best friend Gordon King. (Who was invited over the next day to see the new plant his daughter brought from the secret society lot on campus....) So no, being friends with the burglars does not prevent them from stopping by, although getting eaten by a cowplant prevents return visits.

And in sims 1 you got an insurance payment too. It has always been for the amount you would have gotten if you went into buy mode and sold it. But in Sims 1 the cops always caught the burglar if they arrived while the burglar was still on the lot. (You could also get 250 simoleons from insurance if you called the cops and they got there before the burglar had managed to get to the item he wanted to steal.) Sims 1 depreciation wasn't usually as bad for the stolen item, though.
