View Full Version : What did you discover today while playing the sims?

Don't know why I never noticed this before, but flowers plump up after you water them and sim males (especially) will mutter things when they're sleeping snuggled up to their mate.

Brandi/Beau/Unborn Baby(Which i named Kyle)- In my head, Skip and Brandi had trouble conceiving, so they had IVF, they spent all their money on the hope of being parents, (which in my head is the reason they're poor). So the unborn baby in my head can be Skips if she had her eggs harvested if that makes sense.
That's a good one. I've been avoiding playing them until I decided what was happening. I'd use it, but I already have my own reasoning for them being poor. And my version gives me a reason for Dustin being a criminal.

i used to play in my dogs house growing up, i think it's "normal".

It is autonomous, you can't make the toddler do it.
You don't have to have a servo, I just blame the servo for not putting the child to bed properly.
I didn't have a dog growing up, so maybe it is "normal." ;]

This might be common knowledge as far as I can tell, but I didn't know until recently that ghosts stop haunting the place at about 6 or 6.30
It also turns out that when Sims are stuck in a room together for a while, they start getting angry at each other for no reason.
...No, I didn't lock someone in a closet.
I locked a bunch of people in the attic. :D
Oh, and apparently the neat/slobby meter effects the speed of Sim's eating. One clean Sim is friends with a slobby Sim and the slob ate his food in the time it took for the clean Sim to get a plate for himself, while the neat Sim took about a minute/simhour
I've also found out that with the right technique, there is no limit to the face of a Sim or a Sim's pet. My Dog has one eye, a horn, no ears, no cheeks and no nose.

If you're not doing an Asylum in either 'hood - try one; they're pretty quick once you get to the playing, and really quite funny as a change from trying to keep everysim doing what you want them to.

I had two Asylum's already, although not in those hoods. And I finished them :) These are the hoods where I started the storyline challenge. Anyhow, I decided to continue with Strangetown.

One of my Sims is a literal Mad Scientist, who walks around wearing a blue Social Bunny head and a lab coat. Recently he got a low social score, and met the social bunny...
...And hilariously enough started talking to him as if they'd met a hundred times before.
Heh. I'm starting to wonder if the Sim is actually wearing a social bunny head or if he's just that crazy that he thinks he his.
I've also noticed that one of the Ghosts in my Serial Killer challenge home is Red. I don't know why, there's nothing in that room to cause a fire, and I definitely don't remember burning down. I guess he just died of... Uh...

I noticed that too, and bought the solar panels to fulfill the want. And Hey Presto! the bills went down - pretty cool. Don't buy too many though - I did that once and the lot went all screwy - I think because the large number of solar panels caused the bills to go so low they would have been negative. Each time the postman came the game crashed. Whoops!

This happened with my maid! She's furious at the son because he couldn't make it to the toilet because *she* was cleaning it!
I just discovered how furious my godsis was when she found her her sim husband was sleeping with the roommate (and she only realized after moving the roomie in and discovering who her baby's daddy was). It's kinda silly, but when my newly grown teen girl brought home this ugly popularity sim, he didn't interact with her for the whole afternoon - just flirted with her twin. Then randomly, he decides to go back to her to make-out, and then try to get her to woohoo with him.
I dunno, I know it's consensual, but the first thing that came to my mind was "AAAAH how dare you!! You were sitting there flirting with her sister, but when she wouldn't put out, you went straight to Tara for sex!!" I mean, he only had one bolt for her >_<
I channeled my anger through her father though, and kicked him out x)
Odd thing though, was that even though I cancelled the woo-hoo interaction, he still got a memory of doing her, while she didn't. What a creep >:(

I noticed a similar thing in my dorm - one of the dormies clearly has no neat points at all because whenever he showers, puddles end up everywhere. My sim is only one neat point off maximum, and even though she'd never met the guy before (Chaz Whippler - what a name!), she was furious with him, and relationship went down to around -15daily/-10lifetime! I let her mop up a coupla times 'cause she likes it so much, but ended up getting bored so I would just influence Chaz to do it instead. He doesn't have much fun in that dorm

Nope, it was Be Appreciated in actions' queue when some townie started to behave funny, like if she was giving compliments to my Sim and he acted all shy and modest as if not believing all that  It was cute. And didn't look like what they do when being admired.
I also have all EPs and SPs and it was the first time I saw this interaction. I noticed it started after my Sim greeted that townie girl and talked to her alittle, she said something like "oh you're so cool, some good things will come along your way" and then started appreciating him. Next came that Grand Vampire Count Whatever, first thing he did to my Sim was appreciating him. Maybe Mansion and Garden added this interaction? I installed this SP a couple of weeks ago and yesterday it was the first time I saw that happenning.

I can't tell, unfortunately, but it's very possible. It looked to me like a prolonged version of admiration, yet with more animation, talking; I even thought for a moment that was a new flirting interaction. I also had AL for some time and many many Sims of mine had good/highest reputation score, yet never they were appreciated, that's why I thought it came with M&G. And you can tell if your Sims is being appreciated from the icon in his/her action queue.

I've noticed the "Be appreciated" action as well. I have all the EPs except Pets and BV, so I figured it was a FT or AL thing... sounds like it's AL from though. I love it, it's like the sim is pouring their heart about how wonderful my sim is - and if they're outgoing they take it in like, "Yeah, I know I am just THAT awesome!!" Shy sims don't seem to believe that they're really talking about them.
As for me, I finally used the "Hot Smooch" and "Love Talk" options from NL. What can I say, I never use those booth chairs ^^;
^Oh yeah, my sims are more likely to clean or look out the windows when I don't have enough entertainment items for them.

Well how 'bout that? The last EP I have is Freetime, so I'm guessing maybe AL, or I've just missed it everytime it's happened (or perhaps it just coincidentally never happened).
And I just played with the booths too...how long have I had NL now?

If all the kids are looking the same, find a townie with some different genetics to spice things up. I'm not suggesting one of the super-uglies, (although they might balance your family well) but find one with a facial feature that is somewhat different from your family.

I always marry in an Ivy Copur type. That always sets off the genetics within my families, and then I have fun getting them to look "normal" (i suppose that's the word I'm looking for...) Of course, you could always go for disorder by filling the household with lots of people. (I would say pets also, but it doesn't appear that you own it..)
There are LTW's to fill, careers to top, or not. Let your families drop back into poverty (because mine are always filthy rich by the second generation, soooo not realistic) Have them try something new (there's always new stuff...)

All the inheritence that my sims receive ends up paying for the passing sims funeral costs, usually they pay 10,000 simoleons to bury them at the graveyard, and 50,000 or so for the funeral. It's still unnatural how the sims get so rich so quickly! XD

14th Feb 2010, 5:37 AM
I think I must be too much of a liberal or something because I find it difficult to make my sims filthy rich - to the point where several generations can sit on their hands. I have been trying without changing my habits too much. For me, it is always the same - once they reach about 600,000, they get involved in enough activities and projects that they don't get to pocket millions of ever-growing simoleons.
I did find that it is easy to spend/waste a lot of money for a wealthy sim with a business lot. All I had to do was remodel and change the purpose of the business lot. In one lot, I sold clothing for a couple days, changed it to a pay site, remodeled, went back to selling clothing and a few more items, took a few days to goof off and make toys, remodeled, hired some unnecessary but useful employees just to keep the customers happy to have both a retail and pay lot.
What I have to keep in mind with my rich sims is the price of stuff. Most of the maxis stuff I don't like. But the majority of cc I have downloaded is very cheap and inexpensive, but I love love love the way they look. I can't use too much of the stuff I love when my sims get rich if I aim to have them use up the money they earned. This means my lots never look great to me, they just look good enough because I avoided the great -looking cc when decorating. Using the expensive decor makes all my houses and lots look the same.
It is not rocket science to make money, but I still find it very easy to get rid of money so my sims don't get overly rich without using taxation for the entire hood. My sims provided the seed money to start a women's center for the retail employees as one of their do-good activities to get rid of money this week. Next week, some other community need will be addressed.
From my end, Utopia seems very possible without boredom.

Yesterday, i was playing some sims that live in a mansion. They were throwing a double birthday party, so i thought, hey..i could put some of them things that spurt of fire like the ones the have at "P.U.R.E", too make it look cool, and theres plenty of room...so i found the 'Hottcorp Burning 8-R Series Fire Jet' as its called, in the catalog (under decorative/misc if your wondering..) and placed four in the house for the party. NOT A GOOD IDEA. Turns out, they are not meant for inside, and each one caused a massive fire. The party mostly consisted of sims screaming about and doing the 'omg fire' dance. So thats one thing i discovered, to NOT put them things in a house.
And also, it has an amusing description:
http://i47.tinypic.com/63suuv.jpg
Each one has a baby dragon inside it
Second thing ive just discovered, also includes fire, is that the tinkering train set can catch fire if operated for to long..
http://i48.tinypic.com/2mmko7.jpg
This was so unexpected, i had no idea this could happen. I just watched in shock as it burned away, and incidentaly a sim (in the picture) that came home from work with one of my sims ended up burning to death in it. Damn. Bet he didn't see that coming when being invited over for dinner..

I've found out that when you put an active Sim on the workout machine, their Fun meter goes towards green--a lazy Sim, it'll go towards red, because to them it's a chore. Likewise, neat Sims' Fun meters go towards green when they're cleaning.
Outgoing Sims go naked in the hot tub. I once had two Outgoing Sims married to each other, so you can imagine the fun in the hot tub! (Pixelated, of course.)
Grouchy Sims have the Crank Call option. (Lock your doors BEFORE calling!)
Fun-loving Sims (direct opposite of Serious) have the option of Play With in the bathtub.
Active Sims eat more. Good thing I have the option of putting huge-capacity refrigerators in their homes!
If you mouse over Skills, etc., it'll tell you that nice, outgoing Sims have an easier time building Charisma points, Active Sims are better at building Body points, etc. So I choose their aspiration/career based on their personality, that way they have a better chance at reaching the top. No way would I have a lazy Sim pursue an Athletic or Military career.
One thing I learned months ago when I had just Sims Life Stories--Social Workers take away children when they don't do their homework. I had just been starting out in the game, and didn't it make sense to keep the child home while he's sick with the flu? Social worker came and took him AND his baby sister. Oh well. Some things you learn the hard way.
(Meanwhile, in the real world, in my son's school district, a child has to be fever-free for 24 hours before attending school. Heh.)

If it's just a secondary aspiration, I've noticed they tend to alternate between all being sandwich wants to being all related to whatever the primary aspiration is. It'd be nice if EAxis gave us that happy medium and actually blended the primary and secondary aspiration wants.

Pescado has the sshack mod at MATY that makes the social worker come only if the kid's left alone for too long (in case of dead parents) or being abused (left hungry forever, etc). It's a real life saver for these cases when the parents' work hours don't match the kid's, but don't justify a nanny. ;)

our Sims are full of wonders :D I will go and look at them doing their homework now.
I noticed a little violent behaviour today or at least it was imposed as one, when kids were playing Cops and Robbers. If one of the kids falls down (as if being shot), the other comes up and kicks the laying kid with a foot! The foot does not actually touch the laying kid, but there's a "thud" sound as if it does, and the foot goes rather close to the face area, as if the kid intended to kick in the face. I didn't believe my eyes. More than four years and TS2 still surprises me...

I just got Pets (my birthday was yesterday and I managed, through birthday money, to get 3 EPs over this weekend) and it seems cats are more low-maintenance. I had a Sim family adopt a kitten, and it already knew to use the litter box--for which my Sims praised it.

I found a glitch which concerns a headmaster, it happened twice already.
An elder Sim greeted a headmaster in both cases, proceeded with shmoozing, earned some points and once the clock striked 6pm, died of old age. Grief in the family blahbla. Okay, immediately I commanded other Sim in the family to continue with getting into a private school. Fail! Not only all the points earned by the elder have dissapeared, the headmaster could not be made to do anything, he wouldn't follow the house tour, he would just stand there, he wouldn't eat, the sims couldn't talk to him - all interactions' options on the headmaster are clickable, but nothing happens. So the time runs out, headmaster says the household sucks.
When it happened the first time, I thought it was a one time glitch, but now I know not to make a Sim that is set to die the evening the headmaster comes to have any point-earning interactions with him.

Another glitch with the headmaster: DO NOT have snapdragons in the room when you call him to dinner. Mine let off their pink cloud, and the tiny motive boost apparently counted as the dinner instead of the nice meal that was waiting. So I got 2 points for food. :(

It happened a moment ago. I wasn't actually playing the sims but decorating my custom downtown for Strangetown. I spent quite a time in neigbourhood view, placing stuff all over the downtown and in the end I begun placing big rocks around cooling towers, when an UFO appeared out of nowhere, hovered above one of the cooling towers, sent its beam of light as if planning to suck up the cooling tower's workers and remained in that position for few seconds; then the beam dissapeared and UFO was gone as well.
I'm still sitting here with "huh?" expression on my face.

I just discovered something about the age cheat.
When you age a Sim down to Teen or Child, their grade starts out as an F.
If you age down to Child, quickly save the game and use SimPE or whatever to set the grade to C (which is what they automatically start with when they age-transition from Toddler to Child). Otherwise the Social Worker comes to take them. (Good thing I'd saved the game! I'm having twin orphans cared for by some guy but I don't want them to be adopted.) I also had to change their aspiration back to Grow Up using SimPE, and now I have to erase memories of first kiss.
I also had their foster father use the van to drive them to school to be on the safe side--when you first move in, it's Monday morning, after 8 am, and the bus seldom if ever comes at that point. There have been a few instances where the bus comes the minute the family moves in, but for me 99% of the time it doesn't show up. Either the kids get a free day off, or Mom or Dad can drive them, and they come home on the bus.
(Speaking of days off, once I had a Teen Sim who got to stay home due to a snow day. He was cheering.)

Basically there has to be the Dining action in the queue, not Eat. Your Sims can do this before they eat, when they're dining, or when they're finished eating, before someone pays the tab.

One thing I have noticed...the game acknowledges relationships no further than first cousin. First cousin once removed, it doesn't list that relative as family (the child of your first cousin is your first cousin once removed). I even had second cousins marry and have children once.
It does not acknowledge grandaunt/uncle as family either. I don't know if it would acknowledge great-grandparents...I have yet to see a Sim live to see a great-grandchild without not playing them and leaving them in a kind of "limbo" (closest I got, they died the day before the great-grandchild was born).

About family ties, no the game doesn't recognize great-grandparents, removed cousins or anything past two steps of distance as family. You still have the relatives show up in the genealogical tree if you go back, but the two sims don't recognize each other as family. It's kinda sad when you're playing legacy style and the kids don't have the option to family kiss their great grannies.

For legacies, I usually go in to SimPE and put up the Family flag, but just leave it as an unspecified relation. Helps keep me from accidentally marrying those third cousins fourth removed that I lose track of in the later generations.

I also found out that going elsewhere on a college campus is not exactly the same as being on a community lot--if you have to be at class at 5 pm, you start walking from the student union (or wherever you happen to be) at 4 pm.
If you want to go on a date during college, don't go anywhere on campus. That clock is ticking. (Yet you still come back to your dorm or house the same time you left, how weird is that?)

I do that in SimPE too, but since SimPE actually takes longer to load for me than the game itself (5 minutes for SimPE, 2 for the game), I don't feel like playing with it too often. I just make them Hug/Friendly for the caps if I need some family loving.
(Yet you still come back to your dorm or house the same time you left, how weird is that?)
The engine works like that because if you're controlling more than one YA in the dorm/house, if the clock continued ticking, by the time you came back from the date/outing, your other YA would have missed their classes.

Sims will eat lunch at work/school if their Hunger is more than halfway depleted while they're there. Also useful for Teens who have after-school jobs.

Haha, I aged kids down to Child once and couldn't for the life of me figure out why the Social Worker kept coming every time I restarted. Eventually I glanced at their grade and was like, "Ohhhhhh!"

Yep, and I've had a time where I aged a Sim down to teen, they started out with an F, went to school, got a D-, and got depressed over it!
Why? That's an improvement! LOL

Well, since I learnt (after shovelling cheesecake down a sim's throat all pregnancy and STILL only having ONE child) that un-hacked cheesecake does nothing to induce twins I'm inclined to agree. Maxis borked the code from what I heard
I've since added TJ's mod to induce twins 50% of the time when eaten... some chance is better than none :)

1. I can actually survive without cheats! I impress myself.
2. It seems that when sims are asleep, they can gain enthusiasm about things (Freetime) by DREAMING about them!

Either I should just put the potties in the nursery, or have the parents use another bathroom if their toddlers have to go.

I've noticed that too. However, this doesn't work the other way - parents will use a bathroom while their toddler is on the potty and the child won't bat an eyelid!
So if your toddler needs the potty, get them in the bathroom first, THEN allow the parents to have a bath/shower. Or have separate bathrooms like you originally said

Unlike real dogs, my sim dog can't use the bathroom in the backyard. He was fully housetrained according to his info, but he would still pee on the floor, and when I took him outside and told him to pee he whined because he had no access to the front yard (there was a locked gate).
You might be able to solve this if you put a couple of shrubs in the backyard. Dogs will autonomously pee on shrubs.

I noticed that too, about the toddler just sitting there when the parent comes in.
I typically have the nursery adjacent to the bathroom, so sometimes I put the potty right next to the bathroom door. That's if there are a lot of Sims on the lot. Currently in Riverblossom Hills, I literally have a full house.

I've worked out my own method of caring for Plantsims. I simply give them a large garden (plenty of fruit trees and vegetable plots), easy access to a shower and make sure there's a sunlamp in the living room! That way they can get sunlight and love during the day, and study whatever I want them to during the night. That way the only need I have to manage is the water one. :)
The only thing I don't like about plantsims is once their mood goes into red it takes a lot longer to go green again compared to other sims. But if I can keep them happy overnight then the daylight hours are easy!

You can turn aging off if you have an adult move onto a college campus.
I had a college freshman marry the Professional Party Guest downtownie using InTeeminater. I turned the aging off. The downtownie still goes by days and days of the week; the college student by semesters.
However, I won't have college students have children because the young adult age is a detour--a pocket of time, if you will. And I'll turn aging back on when she's in the last half of her senior year, make him a few "days" older than she.
I'd been wondering if I could do that...so I figured I'd give it a try.

I chanced to see one of my Sims (Michael Goth, Cassandra's great-great-great-grandson) kneeling beside his son, who was bawling his eyes out. (I don't know why.) Michael was "consoling" him, and it looked adorable. I've got a picture somewhere..
Apparently if you have your Sims tend and spray gardens constantly, they'll thrive without the "Talk..." interaction. I'm playing a 'Royal Kingdom' variant and my peasants have nothing to do but garden, so they actually have pretty good gardens. In normal play I send Sims to tend the garden whenever it's convenient, so they barely manage 'healthy' unless I've got a gold-badger on the lot.
Restorable cars won't "restore" if they're not on a driveway. I had some of my peasants on a tiny (1x3) lot use the road to work on a car. They could work on it fine, but I ended up having to plunk a driveway extension on the roof and have them work on cars up there for the car to be sell-able.

I found out that if a playable is struck by lightning, their picture shows up as "black-face" until you actually play them and have them take a shower.
For example--My Sim threw a party and invited the Caliente sisters and Darren Dreamer. They were in the hot tub when it started to rain. My Sim wisely got out and headed inside...the others just stayed there, and Nina and Darren got struck by lightning, and Nina wet herself.
So when my Sim would roll wants for Be Friends With (Nina or Darren) their picture would show up blackened (from the lightning strike). I wasn't going to play the Dreamers or the Calientes...but I did just enough to get them to take showers...and find out that poor Nina had the "Had Accident At Party" memory.
EDIT: I think this is with FreeTime--you don't have to fulfill a LTW to go permaplat. If you fill up that one meter (the skinny one to the left of your Sim's Mood meter), your Sim is platinum for the rest of their life. Just satisfy enough of their Wants.
I also found out that Have a Baby is 8000 points for a Sim whose primary OR secondary aspiration is Family. Everyone else, just 5000.
ALSO: More ways for college Sims to make money:
Stargaze with telescope. You may discover an unnamed star and the Astronomy Club will award you 500 Simoleons. This also works for any Sim.
Dig for treasure (requires Bon Voyage EP). Those old bones and everything--they add up. Maps go for 400 apiece if you find those.

I discovered quarter tile placement-cheat (M&G) and I'm NOT going to play without it anymore  It's awesome!
What is it?

Toddlers have a Steal Bottle interaction. I had twin toddlers get into a tug-of-war with a bottle.

What is it?
set QuarterTilePlacement on/off, it lets you place objects to 1/4 tiles, like when you have 2-tiled window and you want to put there 1-tile curtain, you can place it in the center. It activates when you push ctrl+F.

...that if you don't want your sim to get a crush on someone they rollerskate with, do NOT make them twirl together... Ethan Barrett was checking their business, a skating park and he ask Alvin Futa to join skating (they were friends and I was planning on making Ethan adopt Alvin) and I tried the twirl-interaction (never done that before, obviously). All of the sudden there were hearts flying everywhere! Well, at least I got a good laugh about it.

Your Sim needs to watch who they honk off on a community lot. Jessica Peterson just got her rent raised. LOL

I discovered that toddlers can go crazy if they play xylophone and have 4 or more creative points. I guess it won't hurt for lil' Mickey Smith (Pollination Technician 9#'s 5th child, if we count adoption of Ripp and Buck)

I've noticed that too. They just bounce around, and it's hilarious!

Sims can get fears about being enemies with their babies :o
I also discovered for the first time SimPE's sim surgery-option ;) Now my darn-so-ugly-royal family looks GOOD! And if they spawn some more, no more ugly babies. B)

I've found that that's more likely with Popularity Sims. They want to make friends and hate having enemies. They also roll Fears for Death of [name friend here].

After all these years playing my Sims, last night I watched one of my Sim students hitting his forehead with his empty fruit cup and laughing hysterically. I think he was drunk!

Yesterday i found of that if a sim with high creativity plays the guitar or violin, after they've stopped playing there is a sound of a crowd cheering.

And also just discovered that sims can 'snooze' on a bench (sleep whilst sitting down, rather then lying down)

If you live in an apartment and you're a complete slob, your fellow tenants will complain to you about the smell.
Jessica Peterson has a bad reputation around town, plus she's a slob...so people are leaving bags of flaming poo on her door step and knocking over the trash can.... LOL
