I hadn't heard about this at all until this Kotaku article.

I don't like the idea of online play very much, but the texture quality and flexibility is very impressive. It reminds me of Criquette (http://linna.modthesims2.com/member.php?u=1411270) 's stuff on MTS2.
The official website of the game is here: http://www.citiesxl.com/
In any case, the game looks amazing, and I figured I'd start a thread for any city builder junkies out there who'd be interested in chiming in.

It's still in development, with no firm release date in sight. From what I can tell they keep adding features... that might be a good or a bad thing.

I hate to be a killjoy but I wouldn't get too excited about this game personally.
Monte Cristo games have had several stabs at the city building genre now and while they had varying levels of success all erred on the side of mediocrity rather than greatness.
I'd definitely wait for reviews to hit before even considering purchasing the game.

I've never played anything by Monte Cristo, so I have no idea. And yes, you're definitely right - but then again, I don't buy anything until I've researched and read about it ad nauseam. I just thought the screens and the vids are pretty nifty.

I'm looking at CitiesXL with considerable interest. They've already demonstrated their willingness to do a lot of things Maxis never tried (curved roads and highways, true 3D, etc.), and since we're not going to see a SimCity 5 any time soon (or, for that matter, ever perhaps), I hope CitiesXL is able to come through.

I'll keep that in mind, because it did look very promising. Something else to look forward to would be Tropico 3 (http://www.tropico3.com/en/).

My son and I are really looking forward to CitiesXL. It's nice to see that someone picked up where Humble/EA dropped the ball with the SimCity franchise (now if someone would just make a better people simulator as well...).
I don't know if we'll play it online, though. I know I'll just stick to the sandbox mode.

I also look forward to Cities XL, and can't wait to play it when its finally released. Monte Cristo post updates on their website every now and then, with features they have in the game, slowly giving us information. It's quite nice to read a little blog entry about transportation, or roads and how they work in game. However, the information does come quite few and far between, but nevertheless, it's still nice to actually have some output from the team developing the game. They say they take what is said by the community into consideration too, but who knows whether that'll actually show in the finished product.
