Having trouble with the tribal phase, or figured out good tricks to try? Post 'em here! I'll update the first post with the best of them. :)
My tips:
For peaceful tribes:
As soon as the other tribes crop up, check their opinion of you. If they're yellow, orange, or red, send one (just one!) of your tribe to gift them with food by right-clicking on their food stash. This will keep them from attacking you. Keep an eye on their opinions and give another gift later if you have to.
As soon as you have the options of the different instruments, build them and give the instruments to your tribe. As you ally with more tribes, the other, later tribes will expect you to have all three instruments, and you won't be able to impress them if you don't.
If you get a message that raiders are attacking, don't panic and go on the defensive! Instead, send a single member of your tribe to the village to give them a gift to stop the attack. He should get there right as the raiders are getting to your village. Then you can assemble the rest of the tribe that's still holding their instruments to play for the raiders, eliminating the need to send the whole tribe away from your village.
For hostile tribes:
Other tribes raiding your village is generally a -good- thing! You can stay in your village, giving you a healing bonus, and they usually don't send their whole tribe to attack. Get your spears or axes ready when you see that raiders are coming, get your chieftain out of the way, and kill off the raiders. Then, immediately send your tribesmen to raid their village - they'll be weakened from the loss of several of their guys, and much easier to take.
Nighttime raids can be helpful against a strong enemy. They usually only leave one or two tribesmen awake to stand guard while the rest go into the hut to sleep. Wait until nightfall, check their village, and if it's not heavily guarded, go for it!
For both types:
You really don't need -that- much food. It's 10 per gift and 10 per baby, and your tribe will likely only eat once per tribal stage (for only a few food each) so don't devote too much of your time to gathering food. Stockpile a decent amount in the beginning (around 150 to 200) and then just keep an eye on it. If you do need more, just send one of your tribe back to restock.
Keep your tribe fully populated. Have babies as soon as possible, and if your tribesmen die, replace them immediately.
Protect your chieftain! Don't send him on raids, and keep an eye on his health if he gets attacked. It takes a little while to get a new one when the old one is killed and you won't be able to do anything chieftain-necessary until you get a new one.
When outfitting your tribe, pay attention to the stats on objects. If you're careful, you should be able to get full/almost full levels on all the options (gathering, social, health, and combat) with just a few items.
